Thank you for expressing interest in Southeastern Seminary. I think it’s the greatest place in the world to receive training to serve the Lord wherever it is that he wants to send you and however he is calling you.
Southeastern is known as a Great Commission seminary. We’re very fond of saying around here that every classroom is a Great Commission classroom. Why the emphasis on the Great Commission? We believe last words are meant to be lasting words. The very last thing that the Lord Jesus said before he ascended back into heaven is, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19a CSB). If that was on the heart of our Lord, we believe that should be on our hearts here at Southeastern. That’s why you’ll find that we’re passionate about preparing men and women to serve our Lord all around the world.
As you’re seeking the Lord’s direction in your own life and trying to discern if Southeastern is the right place for you to prepare for ministry, let me give you two verses in Romans that have encouraged me and I hope will encourage you as well.
Romans 12:1-2 says:
“Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
Throughout many centuries, men and women living in the center of God’s will suffered greatly. Some suffered the loss of their own lives. A few years ago, the president of the International Mission Board was on our campus. I remember him clarifying all of this for me when he said, “Being in the center of God’s will is not always easy. Being in the center of God’s will is not always safe. But being in the center of God’s will is always best.”
My prayer for you is that you would be in the center of God’s “good, pleasing, and perfect will.” If that involves you coming to study here at our seminary, then know that’s what we want you to do. I promise you this: We will love you well, we will serve you well, and we will prepare you well for whatever God’s will is for your life.
Daniel Akin President, Senior Professor of Preaching and Theology, Ed Young, Sr. Chair of Preaching
We Are a Great Commission Seminary
OUR MISSION IS TO GLORIFY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST BY EQUIPPING STUDENTS TO SERVE THE CHURCH AND FULFILL THE GREAT COMMISSION. As an institution, we carry out this mission by embodying four marks of a Great Commission seminary, which, in turn, produces students and graduates characterized by four great loves.
You can study at Southeastern with confidence because we are a confessional, Great Commission institution that is firmly committed to the authority, inerrancy, infallibility, and sufficiency of God’s word. In every class, we teach our students to cultivate and exercise a robustly biblical worldview. Learn more about what we believe and read our confessional documents at SEBTS.EDU/BELIEFS
Four Marks of a Great Commission Seminary
1. It is characterized by spiritual vibrancy.
Our goal is that the classes you take at Southeastern will spur you on to love God deeply and pursue his mission passionately around the world.
2. It is certain in its doctrinal conviction.
Our leadership and faculty affirm the Abstract of Principles, The Baptist Faith & Message 2000, the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, and the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood.
Love God
We are committed to seeing our students grow in their love and knowledge of God so they will worship and trust him more. We believe when we are captivated by the love of God (2 Cor. 5:14-25), we are compelled and directed to live for his glory and for the salvation of all peoples.
Love the Truth
Because God is truth (John 14:6), we believe his inspired word is true. We train students to understand and trust the inerrant, infallible, and sufficient word of God and to cherish and proclaim it faithfully as the message of salvation for all those who believe (Rom. 1:16)
With a call to salvation, Jesus invites all of us to follow him, and that call to salvation includes a call to his service and a life on mission. Here at Southeastern Seminary you'll be equipped with a biblical and theological foundation for ministry that prepares you to serve Christ and to serve his Church. You’ll also be trained in an environment that cultivates a deeper love for Christ and a greater passion for the Great Commission. I'm grateful that you would consider being a part of the Southeastern family, and I invite you to come be equipped to make disciples wherever God calls you.
Scott Pace Provost, Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Ministry
SEBTS.EDU/BELIEFS
3. It is committed to ministry preparation.
We seek to train students at every level to be faithful teachers of the word who are committed to serve the church and fullfill the Great Commission. We do this both in the classroom and in partnership with local churches.
Love the Church
We love the Church because God loves the Church and identifies with it as his body (Eph. 1:23). The Church is central to God's mission — a redeemed people called to be disciples and ambassadors of Christ — which is why we equip students to serve the Church and fulfill its mission.
4. It is consumed with a global focus.
We train missionaries, pastors, church planters, and more from every nation, tribe, and tongue to GO so that the Church on earth can look like the Church in heaven.
Love the World
We are committed to seeing our students love what God loves (John 3:16) and participate in his redeeming work in the world. As a Great Commission seminary, we are consumed with a global focus, equipping our students to "make disciples of all nations" (Matt. 28:19)
75+ GRADUATE AND DOCTORAL TRACKS THAT OFFER THEOLOGICAL TRAINING FOR A VARIETY OF CONTEXTS
The Great Commission is the motivation and framework for everything we do at Southeastern. Central to that is the task of equipping students to go make disciples, which is why we train students in every class to be disciple makers in whatever discipline, vocation, or context God sends them.

MEd MASTER OF EDUCATION
SEBTS.EDU/MEDUCATION
Our Master of Education degree equips students to grow in their teaching methods, understand learning theories, produce and assess research, and develop varying approaches to leading others in an educational setting.
The Master of Education degree is designed as an ideal onramp for students interested in completing a Doctor of Education. During their MEd, students have the opportunity to pursue up to 12 credit hours at the doctoral level that will count for both their current degree and a future EdD. Not only does this save students time and tuition, but also it gives them exposure to advanced studies as they are discerning next steps in God’s calling on their lives.
The Master of Education is a unique degree designed for those who already have a background in teaching or teacher education. This streamlined degree allows students to build their teaching skills and potentially bridge to doctoral work. We believe this degree equips Christian educators to be a light in the marketplace as they serve as missional teachers and educational leaders.

I have found some of my best friends in the PhD program at Southeastern. We have a really tight group of guys who get together often. They push me to do better, they encourage me when I feel like an imposter, and they pray for me and what I have going on even as we confess sin to one another. The camaraderie in the doctoral program is intimate and a lot of fun.

FAQs
FINANCIAL AID
How do I apply for financial aid?
Through the Institutional Financial Aid Application at sebts.edu/financialaid. Students don’t have to wait to be accepted to Southeastern before they apply for financial aid. Southeastern also maintains an extensive list of external scholarships that can be filtered by state at sebts.edu/external-scholarships.
Should I complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®)?
Southeastern does not participate in any federal loan programs, so graduate and advanced degree students do not need to complete the FAFSA®.
Do I have to be on campus to be eligible for institutional financial aid? No! Most of our scholarships are available to distance learning students.
REGISTRAR
Can I transfer credits?
Yes, we accept most transfer credits from regionally or nationally accredited schools. Once accepted, students can apply through the Registrar's office to have credits transferred through an official transcript evaluation. The number of transferable credits depends on the requirements for your desired program, the letter grade (C- or higher) for the course, and the relevance of the course to your particular degree.
What is the Southeastern Collegiate Partnership?
The Southeastern Collegiate Partnership (SCP) helps reduce course duplication for eligible MDiv or MA students who have completed equivalent undergraduate courses. Eligible students can either take exams at a reduced cost to receive credit or replace the courses with higher level electives of the same prefix.
Can I pursue multiple degrees at the same time?
While students can pursue two MA degrees or an MA and an MDiv simultaneously, students are encouraged to consult with the Registrar’s office before pursuing simultaneous graduate degrees, as not all degree options can be combined. Learn more about pursuing multiple degrees on page 33.
HOUSING
When can I apply for housing?
Housing applications are accepted at any time after a student is admitted, but we recommend students apply early to secure their housing assignment.
ADMISSIONS
Can I check how many credits can transfer during the admissions process?
Once a transcript has been sent to our admissions office, applicants can request an unofficial transcript evaluation from their admissions counselor to see how classes will potentially transfer for their desired degree.
When is the application deadline?
Applications should be submitted by the first day of classes. Applications submitted after this date are not guaranteed to be admitted during that term.
How long will I have to wait for an application decision?
Once all materials are submitted, applicants should receive a decision in 10 business days.
What degrees or educational opportunities are available for overseas missionaries?
We have several undergraduate, MDiv, MA, and graduate certificate options completely online that are available to international missionaries. 100% of tuition costs are covered for degree-seeking students actively serving with the International Mission Board, and scholarships are available to active IMB employees, returned Journeymen, and missionary kids!
