Line Dancing
Mexican Night
One of Pearl’s varied activities is the weekly line dance class. This free class is held every Thursday and is run by a resident who taught line dancing before retirement. The class is great fun and has even attracted a couple of loyal supporters who seem to gain as much enjoyment watching as those participating.
Life is never dull at Pearl thanks to the regular social events organised by the residents including a recent Mexican themed dinner.

Over 30 residents attended, with many dressing up for the occasion. Everyone brought a plate to share and there was plenty of dancing and singing. The event was such a success the next one has already been planned when residents will be able to enjoy a hula at the Hawaiian themed party!
Some attendees have a variety of physical difficulties and this style of dancing allows for adaptation to suit individual needs. In addition, as each line dance is unique, everybody gets a mental workout trying to learn and remember step sequences - not always successfully! The Pearl Line Dance Group prove that exercise can be fun.

“There is so much diversity in managing a retirement village. You are a ‘jack of all trades’, from managing budgets, repairs & maintenance, ensuring OH&S compliance and responding to resident feedback and requests. I also have the added bonus of project management with the new development and subsequent marketing and sales. Life is never dull, it just keeps getting better!”

Although Jack and Marlene Mechielsen only had to move one suburb to their new home at Pearl Retirement Resort they had to downsize pretty dramatically to do it. But as Jack said “It was a good exercise – downsizing - I think! Our new terrace villa may be a modest duplex unit but it is a very livable space”. “Everything we need is here”, agreed Marlene “just on a smaller scale”. Marlene loves the layout and colour scheme of their new home. “It all works so well”, she enthused.

“What I love about Retirement Living is the opportunity to live well. Time means nothing and we can dispel the myth that growing older means becoming frail and dependent. Of course living in paradise is a great asset and the facilities at Pearl are second to none. Watching my residents live the dream life, social, connected and active is hugely rewarding”.
If you’ve never experienced what it’s like to own a brand new home, you probably didn’t think it would happen when you retired. Think again. At Pearl Retirement Resort, we’re building brand new, terrace villas at a price you will love. Add to this, access to the first-class facilities at Pearl’s Leisure Centre. This is a great place to do as much - or as little - as you like. Take a dip in the pool, get the blood pumping in the cardio gym, challenge your mates to a game of pool, enjoy a BBQ on the terrace or just sit and contemplate life with a quiet drink. Plus, there’s the security of being amongst people of a similar age, within a truly caring community.
Call Dona Wright today on 8946 1812 or 0478 406 880 to arrange a private appointment. Pearl Retirement Resort brought to you by Southern Cross Care.

“One of the challenges of downsizing was where to put all our books which I have to say are still in storage”. But for Jack it’s a small price to pay to be able to call such a lovely supportive setting, home. Until their move to Pearl in January the Mechielsens had been living in a small complex of 16 units. “I chaired the body corporate there so spent a lot of my time involved with all the work that entails”, said Jack. “It is lovely being here and leaving all that behind”.
Why move? “After eight years we thought we had probably had enough and our kids had been encouraging us for awhile. We are only in our mid 70s but they had an eye on our future”. Having lived in the area for many years Jack and Marlene have an established network of family and friends outside the resort so haven’t dived straight into all the social activities it has to offer, but they are getting involved, slowly, in their own time. “We have made some very nice new friends, which is lovely”, said Jack. Marlene likes, “Happily mucking about in our modest little garden. I’m enjoying it immensely. Jack is not particularly fussed about gardening but likes looking at it”. “We are so impressed with how Southern Cross Care runs Pearl”, concluded Jack. “And Dona, Pearl’s manager, is not only very efficient but an absolute delight - we really enjoy her company”.
