Currency The Australian Dollar = 100 cents. The decimal currency is divided in to 5, 10, 20, 50 cent coins and is available in $1 and $2 coins, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 brightly coloured notes. All major credit cards are recognised and EFTPOS and 24 hour cash machine facilities are widely available. Time There are three distinctive time zones in Australia. The East Coast of Australia (NSW, ACT, Victoria, Queensland & Tasmania) is 10 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Central Australia (Northern Territory & South Australia) is 9.5 hours ahead, Western Australia is 8 hours ahead. Passports A valid passport is required and it must not expire for at least six months after your intended date of departure. At airports, immigration and customs formalities are kept to a minimum. Visas All international visitors (except Australian and NZ passport holders) require a visa for entry into Australia. The length of stay and purpose of visit will determine the visa required. All visa applications must be made before arriving in Australia. Health requirements No particular health certificates or vaccinations are required for entry into Australia unless visitors have arrived from, or have visited a yellow fever infected country within 6 days of arrival in Australia. Insurance We strongly recommend all travellers to take out comprehensive health insurance before departure to cover the duration of their stay in Australia. Climate Australia’s seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere with summer beginning on the first of December. Southern Australia has a largely temperate climate with cool winters and hot summers. The northern part of Australia is tropical and best visited during the dry season between May and October, when temperatures are a little cooler. Rainy season in the north is November to March and accompanied by high humidity. Most parts of the country get more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. Electricity The electrical current in Australia is 230– 240 volts (AC 50Hz). The Australian three pin power outlet is different from those used in Europe and the
US. Visitors will therefore need an adaptor for electrical appliances and may need a voltage converter for 110v appliances without a 110/240v volt switch. Liquor Laws Australia’s licensing laws are liberal and most night spots, restaurants and cafes serve liquor seven days a week. The legal age of drinking is 18. Driving Laws & Conditions Australians drive on the left hand side of the road – i.e. right hand drive vehicles. Speeds and distances are given in kilometres. International visitors can drive in Australia using their valid overseas licence. If the licence is not written in English, an international Driving Permit of official English translation must also be carried with the licence when driving. Drivers must carry their licence with them at all times and should be aware Australia strictly controls drink driving, the use of seatbelts and speed limits with random checks and cameras. Communications Email services are available almost nationwide, even in remote parts of the country. GSM digital cell networks, with rental phones or SIM cards, are available. Transport In addition to an extensive network of roads covering its 7.7 million square kilometres, Australia has an excellent air transport network. Metered taxis are available in all major cities and towns. You can book a taxi by phone, hail a taxi in the street or get one from a taxi rank which can often be found at transport terminals, major hotels or shopping centres. Clothing Australia enjoys a relaxed lifestyle and dress is informal on most occasions. In the southern summer it is most often warm enough to go out in the evenings without a jacket, but a light jacket or jersey should be packed for cooler weather. You can expect some rain so include a light waterproof jacket or coat. Pack warm winter clothing if visiting southern states between May to September. In the tropical north, light clothing is required. Tipping Tipping is entirely discretionary in appreciation of good service. Employees do not depend on gratuities for their income nor are service charges routinely added to accounts by hotels and restaurants.

QUEENSLAND Australia’s Sunshine state extends a warm welcome all year round. Glass skyscrapers shouldering sandstone landmarks line the Brisbane River as it flows under the Story Bridge, past subtropical parklands and riverside eateries, while the city’s urban villages showcase some of Brisbane’s coolest cafes and hottest boutiques. To the South, the Gold Coast buzzes with waterside restaurants, designer shopping, championship golf course, endless surf beaches, exciting theme parks and luxury accommodation. Only minutes away, the lush hinterland reveals a contrasting world of enchanting mountain villages, boutique wineries, rainforest walks and an impressive array of native birds and animals. Following the coast north from Brisbane, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, enjoy trendy eateries, azure waters, funky artisan markets and prestigious golf courses. Almost all of the Whitsunday’s 74 pristine islands are preserved as National Parks (only 8 are inhabited with resort facilities), making their turquoise waters idyllic cruising ground. Cairns is the gateway to a tropical kaleidoscope: clear blue waters, lush green rainforests, the colourful cafes and boutiques of Port Douglas, the golden sands that circle luxurious island resorts, remote cattle stations surrounded by rugged red earth and the Great Barrier Reef’s brilliant rainbow of corals. Queensland’s tropical north is where relaxation, wilderness, luxury, adventure, wildlife and aboriginal culture converge. The only place on earth where two World Heritage listed regions converge, the ancient Daintree Rainforest is as rich in flora and fauna as it is diverse. With more than 400 species of birdlife, massive salt water crocodiles, kangaroos and the elusive Casowary. Daintree is a haven for rainforest hiking, 4 wheel driving and bird watching. Spanning the Queensland seaboard, the Great Barrier Reef’s 2000 kilometre collection of coral reefs is undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest highlights and deservedly one of the seven wonders of the natural world.

Launceston’s Victorian streetscapes and graceful Deloraine’s galleries are set against the backdrop of the Great Western Tiers and the surrounding hills are blanketed with vineyards. Just outside Launceston, Hagley is an early colonial village, with stunning country side vistas and vivid heritage homes. Freycinet National Park on Tasmania’s east coast is characterised by white sandy beaches, dramatic wilderness and beautiful Wineglass Bay. Across the bay, Swansea’s Georgian houses enjoy vistas of the peninsula which have changed little since the last ice age. Bushwalkers, kayakers and rock climbers delight in this region.
