his year’s festival explores the essence of music and what it means to us. Nobody really understands why listening to music can trigger such profoundly emotional experiences in all of us, but it is these emotional journeys that makes music so powerful and gives it an essential place in our daily lives. Music has been unique to human beings since the development of early man. The festival will explore how we use music and the stories within it to understand and speak to human connectedness. From songs that preserve aspects of human existence and create distinctive connections between the past and present, to the inexplicable urge to move and dance when we

n behalf of the NSW Government, welcome to the 2018 Bangalow Music Festival – a chamber music festival which features the highest calibre of professional musicians from around the world. The NSW Government is proud to support this Festival through its Flagship Event Fund, which is managed and administered by the State’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Attracting visitors to rural and regional NSW is a top priority for the NSW Government which is why we have committed a record $43 million to grow the tourism and events industry and drive us towards our goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020. We are continuing to build a calendar of compelling major events that promotes NSW around the world and ensures we remain the most visited State in Australia. I wish everyone an enjoyable few days at this year’s Bangalow Music Festival and I encourage visitors to take some time to explore the region’s beautiful scenery, restaurants and cafes, galleries and boutiques.

e all recognize how important music is to us, personally. But when you see dementia patients coming alive at the sound of their favourite songs, or crippled Parkinsons sufferers suddenly able to dance, you know something powerful is happening. For a few days every year, the Bangalow Music Festival opens up fabulous dimensions of sound, of emotion, of sheer pleasure. Peerless musicians explore our musical heritage in ways that surprise and delight us. And here we are again. The 17th Bangalow Music Festival has arrived. It’s our own local miracle, and all of us help sustain it, just by participating. But spread the word! Tell partners, family and friends how it got your spirit dancing. I look forward to sharing it with you.
