Chill out in the Southern Downs...

“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.”

QLD's Cold Country is the ultimate destination for a winter celebration. In the Southern Downs, winter temperatures often dip below zero, with Stanthorpe holding the record for Queensland’s lowest temperature at a frosty 10.6 °C on 23 June 1961. When the mercury plummets, you can immerse yourself in the cozy glow of crackling log fires, enjoy snug cuddles, savor hearty roast dinners, and indulge in steaming hot baths. The coffee tastes richer, and you might even have the chance to build a snowman. Our unique cool climate wines and fresh local produce offer a tasting experience unmatched anywhere else in Queensland Come and embrace the magic of winter in QLD's Cold Country

Brass Monkey Season

The Brass Monkey sculpture in Stanthorpe’s CBD is a famous little fellow that marks the town’s claim to get ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’. In a region that offers four distinct seasons, the most popular season is winter, affectionately known as Brass Monkey Season.

Despite the impression the sculpture by Chris Humphries undoubtedly gives, the brass monkey in question is not a primate at all. As the plaque beside the sculpture explains:

“In long ago wars, artillerymen had a brass plate called a ‘monkey’, which sat on the ground alongside the cannon. This plate held 30 iron cannonballs stacked pyramid-like, until on freezing nights the monkey would shrink and the balls would fall off, hence the expression ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’.

“This friendly chap is showing relief, having protected the last two balls on the plate. Resemblance to any person in unplanned, purely accidental.”

The Brass Monkey sculpture is part of the amazing Artistic Stanthorpe Walking Trail. Download the official Southern Downs Visitor App and follow the Artistic Stanthorpe Walking Trail today.
