District 88 earns two state-level INSPRA Distinguished Service Awards Award of Merit given in memory of Dr. Scott Helton

On Friday, May 21, District 88 will be honored with two Distinguished Service Awards from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA). The statewide program recognizes public education advocates for their support of local schools and districts. The late District 88 Superinten-

dent Dr. Scott Helton, who passed away on Dec. 10, 2020, will be honored in memoriam with an Award of Merit in the Administrator category. Dr. Helton had more than 33 years of experience in education and served in a variety of capacities, including as Principal of Addison Trail for 11 years and as Superintendent of Dis-

Addison Trail principal recommended for D88 Assistant Superintendent of HR During the May 10 District 88 Board of Education meeting, the District 88 administration will recommend the Board appoint Addison Trail Principal Michael Bolden as the Michael district’s new AsBolden sistant Superintendent for Human Resources, effective July 1, 2021. Bolden has served as the ninth principal of Addison Trail since 2014 and has played a valuable role in expanding rigorous college and career opportunities for students; coordinating safety and equity initiatives for the benefit of Addison Trail students, families and community members;

and overseeing various areas of personnel. He was chosen based on the recommendation of District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente, who issued the following communique to the Board and Addison Trail stakeholders: “I am pleased to recommend Michael Bolden for the position of Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, effective July 1, 2021. Mike has served as the ninth principal of Addison Trail High School since 2014. During that time, he worked to support the District 88 initiatives of expanding rigorous college and career opportunities for students through his collaborative leadership with staff, students, parents and community partners. “Mike played a valuable role in

the coordination of several school/ community initiatives for the benefit of Addison Trail students, families and community members, including the Youth Equity Stewardship (YES!) series, the Student School Safety Forum, providing workplace experiences and mentor opportunities, serving on the Addison Workforce Development Committee and most recently, the COVID-19 food-distribution program and vaccine clinics, which provided more than 5,000 vaccines to staff, students and local residents. In partnership with the Addison Police Department, Mike coordinated the ALICE safety protocol training for staff and students. JB Pritzker issued a mandate to transition to an online E-learning environment as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. “As schools worked to implement a virtual learning environment, another concern became abundantly clear – how were we going to provide meals to our students in a remote setting? At DuPage High School District 88, we knew we needed to make sure families received the necessary nutrition – and we immediately got to work. We partnered with Addison School District 4, School District 45, Salt Creek School District 48, Arbor Management, Chartwells and Cottage Hill Operating Company to provide a community food-distribution program. From March 17 to Aug. 18, we offered free meals at various locations in Addison and Villa Park for all residents up to the age of 18. • Arbor Management and Chartwells supplied a variety of breakfast and lunch items (which included frozen vegetables, frozen pizzas, breakfast bars, snacks, milk and more). • Cottage Hill Operating Company transported the items to and from District 88’s two high schools (Addison Trail and Willowbrook). • Addison School District 4, School District 45, Salt Creek School District 48 and District 88 served as pickup locations. “It was a tremendous undertaking that involved hundreds of volunteers.

State Scholars will also receive a digital badge issued by ISAC that can be displayed on online profiles, exhibited on social media, and shared with prospective colleges and employers. “As students start applying to colleges, this recognition will help their applications stand out and might even assist them in securing financial aid,” Cullerton said. “The hard work and recognition does not go unnoticed. I encourage the soon-to-be incoming class of juniors to look up to these high achievers and strive for success, too.”

As a result of the Herculean efforts of staff members, administrators and community members stepping up to prepare and distribute the food items, we provided 385,952 meals. This team collaboration is an example of how these organizations connect with and care for students and families. “One of those volunteers was Willowbrook alumna Emma Jessen, class of 2020. “’When I heard about this program, I reached out right away to see how I could help,’ Jessen said. ‘I wanted to give back to the community that has supported and done so much for me.’ “It was amazing to watch as the volunteers came together to make the meals, organize the boxes, load and unload the buses and hand out the items to the community. “’As we faced the challenges of dealing with a pandemic, this event showed the pride and spirit of our communities,’ said Dr. Jean Barbanente, District 88 Interim Superintendent. ‘It was incredible to see so many people take time out of their lives during a crisis to help with this event each week.’ “The distributions also provided an opportunity to connect with community members to check in and find out what else they needed, and the team was then able to hand out information about available resources. The program showcased the importance and strength of establishing intergovernmental relationships. Because of the partnerships developed through the years among members of this team, we were able to give out Easter bags from the local park district, as well as COVID-19 kits from the village. “’Within a matter of a few days, we were able to develop and implement a communitywide program to feed our youth,’ said Ed Hoster, District 88 Chief Financial Officer. ‘It was truly a team effort that was successful because of all involved.’”

Elmhurst Choral Union’s virtual concert to debut May 15 Elmhurst Choral Union (ECU) and Elmhurst Choral Union Chamber Singers present a “Mutual May Music: A Virtual Performance to Bring Us Together,” an on-demand concert debuting Saturday, May 15, at 8 p.m. Artistic Director Scott Uddenberg will lead both groups and professional soloists in this positive concert experience, featuring music that reflects joy, peace, and the beauty and rebirth of spring. Musical selections will also represent a diverse array of composers. The virtual, on-demand format may be new, yet the concert nods to the eclectic tradition of Elmhurst Choral Union: Haydn and Mozart will be performed, along with more modern works from Ola Gjeilo, Jennaya Robison, and Victor C. Johnson. The ECU Chamber Singers will sing music ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan to Broadway and a spiritual. “Mutual May Music” will feature accompaniment by ECU’s Kevin

Wong and the internationally-known Kontras Quartet, the Chicago-based string ensemble recognized for its vibrant, nuanced performances and crisp precision. Two members of the Kontras Quartet are faculty members at Elmhurst University, where ECU has its roots. Professional guest soloists will be: Kim Jones, Soprano; Amy Pickering, Mezzo Soprano; Madison Bolt, Tenor; Cole Seaton, Tenor; and Lee Lichamer, Bass. Pickering is also an Elmhurst University faculty member. Tickets are $20 at elmhurstchoralunion.org/tickets, and will be available through 12 noon Saturday, May 15. There will also be opportunity to make an optional free-will donation to ECU at time of ticket purchase. Addison Trail hosts SkillsUSA National Signing Day On Tuesday, May 4, Addison Trail participated in the SkillsUSA National Signing Day. That event celebrates high school seniors and college/postsecondary students who have chosen to pursue a career in any of the skilled trades. The goal is to help close the skills gap and raise awareness of options available in the skilled trades. Bluejay Tank winner cleans up with hot idea Similar to Shark Tank, winning competitors meet with venture capitalist At Elmhurst University’s second annual Bluejay Tank competition, students demonstrated their entrepreneurial spirit by pitching business concepts ranging from a startup music production company to an app designed to help college students keep track of their wallets. Mallory Burke, an Elmhurst U. junior from Evergreen Park, won first place for GrillGirlz, a barbecue grill deep-cleaning service that she started last summer with a $120 loan from her parents. With nine employees, all women, the business is on track to earn a net profit of more than $18,000 this year. Modeled loosely on the popular TV show Shark Tank, the Bluejay Tank competition gives students the chance to pitch their business ideas to a panel of experienced en-

trepreneurs in exchange for feedback and a shot at $3,000 in cash prizes. With her $1,500 prize, Burke plans to trademark her business, provide safety training to employees, build a website and expand to other states. “Before the competition I was at a point where I wasn’t sure where to take my business,” she said. “Winning gave me the confidence to push forward. And as a participant, I’ve made connections with people who can help me succeed.” Matthew Gans, a senior from Batavia, Ill., won second place and $1,000 for MGProductions, a photo and video marketing company that has produced ads for Aston Martin and other top businesses. Nearly 62 percent of eligible DuPage County residents vaccinated against COVID-19 with at least one dose As of May 5, over 37 percent, or 346,628, of DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Of the DuPage County residents currently eligible, nearly 62 percent, or 458,162, have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Additionally, 89 percent of DuPage County residents ages 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. In the past week, more than 36,000 vaccine doses were administered into the arms of DuPage County residents for a total of 804,790 doses administered to date. “We encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated to protect

themselves and their loved ones,” said Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department (DCHD). “The sooner we all get vaccinated, the sooner we can put an end to this pandemic and get back to the people and places we love.” Last week, the DCHD COVID-19 Community Vaccination Clinic at the DuPage County Fairgrounds began offering walk-in vaccinations to provide convenient opportunities to anyone 16 years and older. Kerry Shields Foley left the Cincinnati area in the very early hours of April 26 to make a special trip to Elmhurst to wish a happy birthday to her father, Tom Shields, who lives at Park Place of Elmhurst. What made this visit a delicious surprise was that Kerry brought along gourmet doughnuts from Duck Donuts, a gift for each resident in honor of Tom’s 80th birthday. Kerry, owner of the Duck Donuts shop in Mason, Ohio, gave each resident their own package with a cinnamon sugar doughnut and a chocolate doughnut with birthday sprinkles. These gifts were left at each resident’s doorway in the afternoon of April 26. The Park Place residents appreciated the sweet gift and Tom was grateful for the love he felt, from both his family and his neighbors. “As my 80th birthday approached, I was wondering how I would feel,” Tom said. “My daughter Kerry surprised me by announcing that she

Willowbrook’s offense comes to life against Hinsdale Central Warriors bash 16 hits, including three homers, in an 11-2 win

The Willowbrook softball team split a pair of games last week. Playing for the first time in seven days, the Warriors lost 7-3 at Downers Grove South in Friday’s West Suburban Gold Conference contest. One day later, Willowbrook earned an 11-2 win at Hinsdale Central. Saturday’s non-conference win over the Red Devils (of the West Suburban Silver Conference) lifted the Warriors’ overall season record to 3-4. Willowbrook took an early 2-0 lead over Downers Grove South on freshman Calli Kenny’s two-run single in the top of the first inning. The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at 2-2. Downers Grove South added two more runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. A solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run homer in the sixth inning pushed the lead to 7-2. Willowbrook loaded the bases in

the top of the seventh inning. The Warriors scored one run in the inning on a bases-loaded groundout by junior Kayla Neff. Junior Caitlyn Kulczyski pitched a complete game for Willowbrook. She allowed eight hits and three earned runs over six innings. At the plate, Kulczyski went 2-for-4 and scored one run. The Warriors pounded 16 hits, including three home runs, in Saturday’s victory at Hinsdale Central. Senior Annemarie Knudtson went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. She scored three runs. Sophomore Kayleigh Dennison went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Willowbrook bashed all three of its homers against Hinsdale Central during the second inning. Freshman Isabella Dugo, who went 2-for-4 in the game, homered to lead off Willowbrook’s six-run outburst in the inning. Knudtson launched a two-run homer later in the second inning.

Dennison then stepped to the plate and connected for a solo homer to give the Warriors back-to-back home runs. The Warriors scored three runs in the top of the first inning of Saturday’s game. The six-run eruption in the second inning gave Willowbrook a 9-0 lead. Junior Grace Hayes went 3-for-5 and drove in one run for the Warriors in their win over the Red Devils. Kenny went 2-for-5 and drove in one run. Neff went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in. Senior Caroline Dooley pitched a complete game for Willowbrook on Saturday to earn her second victory of the season. Dooley gave up five hits and one earned run over seven innings. She recorded nine strikeouts and didn’t allow any walks. The Warriors’ schedule this week includes West Suburban Gold Conference games against Morton, Leyden and Addison Trail.

Willowbrook bounced back from Friday afternoon’s loss to beat Hinsdale Central 11-2 on Saturday morning in Hinsdale. The Warriors hit three home runs in the second inning of the non-conference game against the Red Devils. Dugo led off the inning with a solo home run. Senior Annemarie Knudtson bashed a two-run homer later in the inning. Dennison, who batted after Knudtson, went deep to give Willowbrook back-to-back homers for the second time this season. Freshman Calli Kenny and junior Kayla Neff hit back-to-back home runs during the Warriors’ April 28 loss to Addison Trail. Saturday’s win over Hinsdale Central gave the Warriors an overall season record of 3-4.

The Willowbrook girls soccer team improved to 4-2 with last week’s 5-0 home victory over Hinsdale South. Senior Gracie Tumilty (No. 13-top) and sophomore Molly Brennan (No. 15-middle) both scored two goals for the Warriors in the May 6 match in Villa Park. Tumilty and Brennan provided first-half goals to give the Warriors a 2-0 halftime lead. Tumilty’s penalty-kick goal in the second half increased the lead to 3-0. Brennan scored her second goal of the match to push Willowbrook’s lead to 4-0. Junior Erin Fitzgibbon (No. 18-right) netted Willowbrook’s fifth goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Aderholt delivered a shutout performance. Two days before beating Hinsdale South, Willowbrook earned an 8-0 win at Proviso West. Tumilty scored three goals against the Panthers. Fitzgibbon added two goals. Brennan and freshman Grace Soltys both scored one goal. Proviso West allowed one own goal. The Warriors’ schedule this week includes matches at Proviso East, Leyden and Hinsdale South.
