IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ... Germaine’s offers

options for brides, grooms, attendants and moms by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

s s e r D SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Bridal Guide

This trumpet-style dress has a cascading train with lace edges. Bridesmaid’s dresses come in a variety of colors and styles to suit the style of the wedding.

Each year more than 2 million couples marry in the United States and 2 million brides begin their search for the perfect bridal gown. For some brides, the search begins the day the engagement is announced while others have piles of bridal magazines they have collected for years tucked away with their favorite dresses marked. Germaine’s Bridal at 640 W. Main St., Lake Geneva, offers elegant bridal gowns including long dresses with flowing trains, lace veils and head pieces. With many choices available at Germaine’s and with guidance from Germaine or one of her staff members, the hunt for the perfect gown begins. As the bride to be walks through the main showroom, the variety of designs helps her decide what style appeals to her. Like all fashions, bridal gowns change over the years. In the 1960s, bridal gowns had long sleeves and often skirts that were full with a wire hoop worn underneath to hold the skirt out, much like the heroines in the movie “Gone With the Wind.” By the 1990s, the higher necklines and long sleeves made way for more open looks, and, by 2000, strapless gowns were seen at many weddings. Today, according to Germaine, two of the most popular styles are the mermaid and the trumpet gowns. Mermaid gowns are tight fitting, adhere to the body’s silhouette and might flounce out at the bottom. Trumpet gowns fall loose from about mid thigh and can be thought of as a hybrid between a mermaid gown and an A-line silhouette. The trumpet dress’ skirt resembles the shape of the trumpet’s bell. While mermaid and trumpet styles are popular, Germaine encourages brides to keep an open mind. “Be willing to try many different styles,” she said. “You may find that the one you fall in love with is not the style you thought you would love.”

Make it your own

While strapless gowns are still very popular, straps are coming back and can be added to any gown. Alterations can add details to any dress

to personalize it. One of the changes is the addition of crystal-like buttons sewn on the back of a gown to replace the satin buttons. “Sometimes we increase the back buttons all the way down the back of the dress for a very striking look,” Germaine said. Germaine said she is able to redesign any dress to make it become the dress of any bride’s dreams by adding sleeves, lace or other embellishments such as jewels. While traditionally wedding gowns were white, today there are other choices. “Off-white gowns and ivory gowns are popular, maybe more so than the traditional pure white,” she said. “Blush-colored gowns are also making their way into the list of favorites because of their unique color. A very popular look is an ivory colored layer over the blush layer, giving a bit of color but still maintaining the white bridal look. This provides a new and unique look and adds a touch of color.” One of the challenges for the maid of honor has always been to take the long train and bustle it up at the wedding reception so that it is not trailing all over the floor. There are now several ways to bustle the gown that can be easily tied together, giving the bustle a different look and an easy tie-up for the maid of honor.

Be willing to try many different styles. You may find that the one you fall in love with is not the style you thought you would love.” Veiled in elegance

Veils also have changed over the years. The blusher veil that traditionally lightly covered a portion of the bride’s face until the ceremony is rarely used today, Germaine said. But short or long veils remain an important part of the wedding ensemble. “Today the comb that adheres the veil to the hair is attached to the veiling itself so it can be removed during the reception, but the headpiece can remain on, retaining the bridal look,” Germaine said. “There is a large selection of headpieces to complement any dress in both the traditional silver or the gold toned that works especially well with the blushcolored dresses.” Weddings are not always held in churches. Many are held outdoors, at the lakeside, on a golf course, in a park or on a farm. Theme weddings are a popular way to celebrate. A bride might want burlap wrapped in with her flowers for a country wedding and might carry that theme through to her headpiece to fit the barn décor. Whatever the theme, Germaine’s has accessories that can bring it to life. Germaine displayed a pair of hand-held jeweled masks that are popular for weddings with a masquerade or Mardi Gras theme. Often brides-to-be find choosing their bridal gown stressful. “It should not be stressful,” Germaine said. “Make an appointment for a time when you can be relaxed and not trying to

hurry to just get it done. Often a mistake made is to bring a large entourage of family and friends to pick out the dress. This often leads to confusion with too many different opinions and each friend trying to convince the bride to choose her favorite.”

Options for bridesmaids

In the past, wedding parties often had a monochromatic look with all the girls wearing the same dress in the same color regardless of their hair or skin color, height or weight. Today wedding parties often have a more eclectic look. Inspired by Kate Middleton, brides choose classic jewelry Ever since Kate Middleton walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey in her fabulous fitted gown and crystal teardrop earrings, brides everywhere have been emulating her classic, elegant style. Fashion jewelry leader CAROLEE quickly named its popular version of the earring “The Kate” – and at $32 it’s within reach of elegant brides in every price range. “Throughout 2011, brides from Kate Middleton to Hollywood celebrities chose very classic styling for their jewelry,” said Jill Maier, vice president of design at CAROLEE. “We’re with them on that level, and we have an extensive collection of beautiful designer crystal and pearl bridal jewelry to suit the tastes of today’s discerning brides.” Maier has these tips for brides who want to look royal – British or American style. • Choose crystal and pearl styles that are distinctive yet not overwhelming in scale. • Balance the proportions of your earrings and necklace. If your earrings and necklace “match,” keep them close in size with each other. Or if you choose major chandelier earrings, scale down your necklace or don’t wear one and make the wrist a focal point. • Bracelets are an important bridal accessory, and they look great worn in

multiples – stacks of crystal bangles, mixes of decorative floral pearl and crystal links, or a combination of bangles and links. To find a full range of elegant and affordable bridal jewelry, go to CAROLEE. com. Use code Metro12 and receive 20 percent off your purchase. (METRO CREATIVE)

VINTAGE IS TREND IN BRIDAL JEWELRY “Vintage remains a strong trend in bridal jewelry,” according to Jill Maier, vice president of design at CAROLEE. Harking back to the adage that “everything old is new again,” brides are favoring art deco, estateinspired silhouettes when it comes to jewels. The mix of crystal and pearl is a signature look of CAROLEE. It’s a timeless combination fused into an array of bridal designs – florette bracelets, delicate drop earrings, and vintage inspired

necklaces. Here, the bride can rest easy knowing she won’t have to sacrifice for style – the majority of the collection comes in under $100. These pretty pieces are perfect for the blushing bride and their versatility makes them ideal for the bridal party as well. The desire to look fabulous without spending a fortune has never been quite so high. Many brides are choosing just one or two standout accessories, balancing a modern detail-oriented ceremony and reception with their minimalistic, classic ensemble. Maier also notes, “The beauty of this jewelry is that it’s distinctive without being overwhelming. It can be worn alone and looks great layered.” Jewelry experts at the CAROLEE counter in major department stores are always a great resource for jewelry bridal tips, or click on “BRIDAL” at www.carolee. com for a wealth of ideas for brides and every member of the bridal party.

FIVE TIPS FOR AN INTIMATE WEDDING

The terms wedding and money go hand in hand. The average wedding cost is now up to $31,213 according to theknot. com, and that’s not even including the honeymoon. Because of increasing costs, more and more couples are looking to plan a smaller, more intimate ceremony. While there’s no universal way to define a small wedding, it typically involves a limited gathering of family and close friends. No matter the size of your guest list, you’re bound to feel the stress of planning, as you want your day to be perfect. But opting for a modest-sized wedding opens the door to endless options and possibilities. Here are some tips for making your smallscale wedding the event of the year.

Responsibilities vary for wedding party participants

When asked to play a role in the wedding of a friend or family member, most people are honored and willing to do whatever it takes. That willingness to be helpful is often a blessing, as wedding party participants each have their own unique responsibilities. Maid of honor and best man The maid of honor and best man are counterparts in the wedding. The bride and groom’s right hand woman and man, respectively, the maid of honor and best man are often siblings or very close friends of the bride or groom. Though their responsibilities are similar, the maid of honor and best man don’t have completely identical roles. The maid of honor might have the most responsibilities of anyone aside from the bride and groom. The maid of honor will help the bride shop for her dress and must also plan the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. The maid of honor’s duties also extend to the wedding day itself, when she will be expected

to help the bride get dressed and toast the new bride at the reception that night. The best man’s role includes organizing the bachelor party and toasting the groom at the reception. The best man also plays a logistical role, organizing the newlyweds’ transportation to the airport the morning after the wedding as well as organizing the groomsmen’s gift to the couple. Bridesmaids and groomsmen The role of the bridesmaids and groomsmen are similar. Bridesmaids and groomsmen are often the siblings or close friends of the bride and groom, and they accompany each other down the aisle during the wedding procession. Typically, the role of bridesmaid and groomsmen is to offer any assistance in making the ceremony go smoothly. Groomsmen may act as ushers, while bridesmaids might help address wedding invitations and choose vendors for the ceremony and reception. How involved the bridesmaids and groomsmen become is often contingent on how close they live to the bride and groom and how much help is needed the day of the ceremony. Flower girl and ring bearer The flower girl and the ring bearer are typically very young members of the family, such as very young siblings or a niece or nephew of the bride or groom. The flower girl will carry a basket of

flowers during the wedding procession, often tossing flower petals on the ground to signify the bride’s entrance. The ring bearer is a boy and carries a pillow with the rings sewn on it during the wedding procession. Parents The bride and groom’s parents play the role of hosts. The tradition of the bride’s parents paying for the wedding entirely by themselves has largely fallen by the wayside thanks to the escalating costs of throwing a wedding. However, if the bride’s parents are footing the bill, then they will typically act as hosts of the wedding. In that instance, the groom’s parents will host the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. During the ceremony, the bride is most often walked down the aisle by her father, though some brides choose to have both parents included in the walk down the aisle. The groom’s parents will often walk down the aisle ahead of the procession and take their seats. The parents may also play a role in the months leading up to the wedding. For instance, the mother of the bride might help plan the bridal shower, while the father of the groom might help plan any activities, such as a golf outing, for the groomsmen and additional friends of the groom a day or two before the wedding.

Most area spas offer lounges with coffee, tea or wine to further relax clients as they transition between services.

A time of by Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Pampering and Relaxation away from the stresses of life

Just the mention of the word spa could bring a smile to a brideto-be’s face as she begins to imagine a time of decadent pampering, relaxation and time away from the everyday stresses of planning a wedding. Breathing in the scents of aromatherapy while a masseuse gently kneads away the stress in your muscles delivers a sublime sense of relaxation. A facial could follow, to rejuvenate the skin. This is just the start of a relaxing spa day, which could also include a manicure pedicure, lounging around or swimming in the pool and a luncheon served in the peaceful lounge. Today’s spas are very different from the original spas that were found in the early days of the Roman Empire. It was the soldiers who returned from battle and found that soaking in thermal waters helped heal their aches, pains, and wounds. This was the beginning of baths being built by the Romans and their use spread to other members of the community – that is to the men of the community. In the 14th century, the town of Spa, Belgium, began to build baths with thermal waters and one theory is that the term spa came from that town as spas or baths were beginning to spread through Europe. Bath, England, became popular as a place to come for medicinal spa baths.

The spa movement spread through Europe and eventually made its way to the United States, where spas were built in areas where thermal waters occurred. These early spas were more focused on bathing. Today bathing is a daily ritual and people turn to the spa for improvement in health through rest, relaxation, exercise and pampering. The International Spa Association defines a spa as a place devoted to overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage renewal of mind, body and spirit, thus making visits to the spa much more enjoyable than those found in the early days.

Relaxation is the key

Is there anything more special than a day at the spa? Actually there is. How about a weekend at the spa? For many years the spa was a concept open only to the very wealthy. It was the wives of multimillionaires and movie stars who attended the popular spas at outrageously high prices. See PAMPERING, Page 14 For most people, a spa day was

not in their schedule or their budget. But times have changed. It is not only the wealthy that take advantage of spas. Women are now the principal users of spas but there has been a recent increase in the number of men also seeking spa services. Now take time to look through the lists of services available at local spas and find the ones that suit your needs. Imagine a massage with the therapist kneading away the stress that has accumulated in your neck and shoulders. As spring is approaching, a good pedicure is a must to wear those sandals that will show off your toes. Be daring and try a different color polish. No need to stick to the plain old pinks, oranges, and reds. Try a blue, green or purple polish for a new look. Ready for a massage? Try one of the special massages, such as the hot stone massage, to increase the relaxation of the muscles. Many spas now offer a massage that uses cupping. In these massages, special cups, which are said to increase circulation to the area, are placed on the skin. A facial will make your skin glow. Remember bikini season is right around the corner. Now is the time to take care of your waxing needs.

A massage is a great way to relieve the stress of planning a wedding.

Where to start?

So once you have decided to spend a day luxuriating at a spa, what is the next step? Well, any activity is more fun when shared with friends or a loved one, so gather up a friend or group of friends, and make this spa day a girls’ getaway. Or a romantic overnight stay with your spouse or significant other featuring a couples massage may be just the perfect getaway. So where do we start? In the Lake Geneva area there are several high-quality spas that deserve a look as you plan for one spa service, an entire spa day, or weekend getaway. Grand Geneva Resort, Well Spa and Salon 7036 Grand Geneva Way Lake Geneva • (262) 249-4750 According to John Morris, manager of the Well Spa, the spa has grown out of the original racquet and sport club started in the 1970s by the Playboy Club, former owners of the property that is now Grand Geneva Resort. In 1994 the spa was added to the sport club. “Spa services have changed over the years,” Morris said. “There is less emphasis on pampering and frivolity and more emphasis on health. We offer a complete spa package, not only pampering services, but tennis and cardio and strength programs.” Membership packages are available to residents of the area who make this their health club. In addition, guests at the hotel are able to take advantage of both the spa facilities and the fitness room to stay in shape while staying at the resort.

Originally, women came in for one service such as a manicure, facial, or massage. Now it is not unusual for a group of women to come in for a day of pampering as a girls’ getaway. Massages and facials are a favorite combination combined with lunch and time in the pool. Bridal parties often book a day of pampering that may include a facial, massage, and nails. Or the party may choose to extend the services to include hair services, or waxing. While relaxing in the lounge, they may add some white wine to enjoy between services. The Swedish massage remains the most popular form of massage but there are certainly other choices. Aromatherapy massages and hot stone massages are favored by many clients.

“A change in spa services,” Morris said, “includes more men coming in for services. While massage is still the most common service they request, they are beginning to request facials, perhaps due to encouragement from their spouse. Couples massages are quite popular as couples enjoy a relaxing time together.” When spa services are complete, special shopping opportunities are nearby, in the resort gift shop or in downtown Lake Geneva just a few minutes away. The spa offers many services that can be checked out on line. Because Well Spa is an adult facility, a child care center is available for members and guests at an added fee. When one takes the time to sync their mind and body rather than syncing with their computer and tablet, a restful change will be realized.

Avani Spa at The Abbey Resort, 269 Fontana Blvd. Fontana • (800) 772-1000 The Abbey Resort has been providing luxurious resort activities since its opening in 1962. With its recently updated spa facilities and spa pool area it is a great place for a day of relaxing and a great spa experience. A spa membership allows for a work out in the fitness center, a swim in the newly renovated pool, and use of the sauna. The spa offers a complete range of spa services including massage, nails, hair, facials and fitness center and also offers some unique services. Have you ever experienced a reflexology massage? The therapist will work only on your hands and feet where she will knead the pressure points, allowing the nerve network to boost the immune system to fight illness and leave the recipient with total body relaxation. Expecting a new addition in the family? Then it is time for a mom to be to come for a maternity massage. This massage is specifically designed to relieve the muscle aches and fatigue associated with pregnancy – especially in the later stages. The stress and fatigue will melt away. Even better than just a maternity massage, is to enjoy the Baby Moon package. Both mom and dad to be will spend a night at the

resort enjoying a massage for each, a facial for each, and a pedicure for each. A decadent way to enjoy the time together before life moves onto its next phase. What teenage girl would not enjoy a day at the spa? While many spas only offer adult services, Avani has special spa services for teenagers. The It’s All About Me teen spa package provides two hours of spa services including a massage, clear facial, and manicure and pedicure. Or any of these services can be booked individually. Calladora Spa at Lake Lawn Resort, 2400 E. Geneva Delavan • (262) 725-9201 Calladora Spa is different, according to manager Christine Showalter, because while it is located on the grounds of the resort, it is spa exclusive. “That means we are not connected with the fitness memberships or the resort fees. The only guests in the spa are those having services at the spa.” The spa offers full salon services including no-chip manicures and pedicures. A variety of massages, facials, and body treatments will revitalize your skin after the stress of winter. An exfoliating sugar body scrub will refresh and nourish your skin as you are readying yourself for summer. Girl friend groups, bridal parties and couples services are all available. Enjoy the lounge between services with complimentary

coffee and tea. Or perhaps a glass of white wine, which is available for purchase, is more to your liking. The special Calladora Suite has two soaking tubs that may be added to a couples massage. With a water feature, soft lighting and music, the guests can control the bubble feature in their tub from very light to high speed. Services for teens include manicures, pedicures and hair and makeup. Mothers and daughters often have manicures or pedicures side by side. Facials and massages can be arranged with parent consent but teens must change in the treatment rooms to respect the privacy of the adults in the locker room. The spa regularly sponsors teen guests from the community, teaching young girls the importance of a skin care routine. Heartland Spa 335 Wrigley Drive Lake Geneva • (262) 248-2157 The Heartland Spa, in the Bella Vista Suites on Wrigley Drive, is “the new kid in town.” Although it is new to Lake Geneva, the spa has a long history in Gilman, Ill., where it made its home on a farm. The program consists of exercise classes, healthy eating, spa treatments, and lifestyle lectures. The program continues much as it did in the country except the morning walk down country roads has been replaced by a walk along the shore of Geneva Lake. Single day to multiple day packages are available.

Girlfriends weekends, sister’s weekends, motherdaughter weekends are a popular way to enjoy a spa and spend time with friends or loved ones. Pedicures have grown in popularity as a means to relax and prepare your toes for summer sandal season.

Five GOLDEN RULES

of planning a group destination wedding

Soft sand warms the soles of your feet and the smell of sweet flowers fill the air. The salty mist of the ocean kisses your cheeks while the laughter of friends and family brings joy to the heart. This isn’t just an amazing vacation for your loved ones it’s your wedding day. Images like this are inspiring more brides than ever before to forego traditional weddings made popular by their parents’ generation in exchange for dreamy, relaxing destination celebrations. It’s the ultimate way to customize a wedding, and often it’s more affordable than going the traditional route.

16

BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

“Once intimate affairs, destination weddings are no longer just for small groups,” said Cheryl Cox of Grand Strand Bridal Association. “The most intriguing and prominent wedding trend of 2016 is couples expanding the guest list for their destination weddings to include people beyond immediate family.” The reason this trend is growing so rapidly is that it provides guests more than just the opportunity to see a loved one tie the knot. It really gives them a mini-vacation that they’ll never forget. It’s a vacation with a purpose, and plenty of time for fun and activities are built into the experience. However, brides and grooms who want to embrace this growing trend have a few unique considerations. To ensure everyone has a great time, follow the five golden rules of planning a destination wedding for big groups. Rule 1: Select an accessible location You’ll get more RSVPs if you select a destination that is easy and affordable for everyone to access. Consider air travel and drive times from guests’ locations. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is a great example that is a four- to eight-hour drive from many Midwest cities, plus has an international

airport, with plenty of non-stop flights from major cities. Furthermore, a domestic locale like this means guests don’t have to worry about passports and complicated travel logistics out of the country. Learn more at www.visitmyrtlebeach.com/. Rule 2: Look for myriad of lodging options Getting a block of hotel rooms is a common practice, but go a step further to provide guests with a variety of lodging options so they can pick what best suits their tastes and budget. Traditional hotel rooms, B&B style accommodations at historic plantations and even vacation home rental options let guests choose what makes them most comfortable. Be sure to mention accommodation info on your wedding website and/or invitation. Rule 3: Opt for a city with variety Some people adore spending days on the beach or hours golfing while others crave visits to landmarks and amusement parks. Consider what a location has to offer beyond the ceremony. You’re giving guests a reason to splurge on a mini-vacation, so a place

Weddings are filled with many emotions – happiness, excitement and anticipation, to name a few. With all of the positive emotions a wedding may drum up, in the mix there may be a few negative ones, including feelings of being overwhelmed at all the details that need to be completed on a deadline. One aspect of wedding planning that tends to send people into panic is wedding reception-seating arrangements. The thought of having 200 friends and family members together under one roof -– and then attempting to seat them next to an acceptable group of people – can cause some couples to hyperventilate. Every family has its ups and downs, and there are certain people who get along well and a few who clash. Ensuring that a wedding is memorable for all the right reasons (and not for the brawl at table

YOUR WEDDING GUESTS

three) is why seating arrangements are so important. Many couples can use a little advice when seating guests, while others would love another person to handle the seating arrangements for them. Here are some guidelines for setting up reception seating arrangements. • Place yourselves as well as the bridal party, at a separate table that is in a prime location in the room. Be sure to allow the spouses or dates of bridal party members at the same table so couples remain together. • Some couples choose to seat both sets of parents at one table together – the parents’ table. Grandparents may also be seated at this table, depending on the number of people each table can accommodate. • If children under the age of 7 are invited, they should be seated with their parents. Children between ages 7 and 14 can be seated at a separate kids’ table. • Be mindful of guests with disabilities

or mobility issues. Seat them close to the door, bathrooms or food station. • Instead of separating the bride and the groom’s family to separate sides, intermingle the tables to promote conversation. • Consider arranging guests by common interests at each table, seating business associates or parents’ friends together. • Take into consideration people who have relationship rifts and try to seat them separately. But don’t stress about this too much because it won’t be possible to accommodate everyone. You’ll have to hope that at your wedding a certain level of decorum will preside. • It’s not unheard of to let guests seat themselves. This takes the pressure of finding a seat for everyone off of you as a couple and enables you to think about the other tasks at hand. This can take place at a buffet wedding or a smaller affair.

Five simple steps

to creating gift baskets that rock

Graduations, weddings, birthdays, office celebrations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and barbecues – spring and summer are full of occasions that cry out for a great gift basket. A big basket bursting with a bounty of goodies can be costly, however, if you buy a pre-made one. Worse yet, store-bought baskets can be predictable and impersonal. Creating your own gift basket can save you money, allow you to really personalize your gift and be as much fun to make as they are to receive. Not sure how to start? Follow these simple steps to create gift baskets that work for every occasion. First, pick a personalized theme. Store-bought gift baskets can be pretty homogenous – snacks, beverages, candy, etc. Instead of going with a predictable theme, think about the recipient’s favorite activities or hobbies. Choosing a theme that’s meaningful for the recipient personalizes the gift basket and will help you brainstorm just what items to include. Here are four theme ideas to help you get started creating amazing, personalized gift baskets this spring and summer.

Spice of life

Your giftee doesn’t have to be a foodie to appreciate a basket of spices that will add flavor and excitement to any dish.

18

BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

Frontier Co-op can help you make your own personalized spice blend to be the star of a gift basket full of seasonings and cooking accessories. Frontier Co-op’s website even has a downloadable label you can print to place on the bottle. Try one of their recipes.

SPICY BUFFALO POPCORN SEASONING Ingredients 1/8-1/4 teaspoon Frontier Organic Cayenne (according to heat level desired) 1/2-1 teaspoon Frontier Organic Paprika 1 teaspoon Frontier Celery Salt 1/2 teaspoon Frontier Sea Salt 3 Tablespoons Frontier White Cheddar Cheese Powder Directions Mix spices and place in an airtight jar or tin.

Go team, go!

Of course, team-themed items are a must for a sports-themed gift basket, but don’t forget to include all the extras that make watching the game so much fun. In addition to a new mitt and cap, baseball fans might appreciate a gift certificate to the best hot dog joint in town. A beer-of-the-month membership certificate and team jersey work

great for football fans.

Movie night at home

Packets of gourmet microwave popcorn, all the accoutrements you need to make a root beer float, and a gift card for DVD rentals are sure to please every film fan.

Tea for two

For the sophisticated tea-lover, a basket of accessories like a tea infuser and teapot cozy are ideal. Boost the appeal with a selection of bulk teas packaged in beautiful or themed glass jars – it’s a great way to treat your tea lovers to all their favorites while introducing them to new varieties, too. Once you’ve chosen a theme, it’s time to pull the basket together with these simple steps.

Set a budget

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re buying items to put in a gift basket and overspend. It’s just as easy to under purchase, ending up with a skimpy, unsatisfying basket. Setting a budget will help you know just how much you can and should buy.

Make a list

Once you’ve decided on a theme, write

Four wine buying tips for weddings Traditional wedding rules have fallen by the wayside –food trucks are in, having a hashtag is a must, bridesmaids no longer wear the same dress and groomsmen are sometimes in sneakers. Couples are actively seeking ways to differentiate themselves and get creative. All that aside, there is one thing that remains constant – weddings must have wine. Without wine, there is no glass to raise during the toast to the bride and groom and nothing to drink when the bar closes during dinner. Wine is the first thing guests are offered when they take a seat, and – you know that they say – it’s important to make a good first impression. Choosing the right varietals for your wedding does not have to be a stressful endeavor. Whether you’re a novice wine drinker or a connoisseur, follow these four tips and you’ll please a crowd without spending a fortune. Say “cheers” with a sparkling wine People love a good toast, and nothing washes down a teary maid of honor speech like a glass of sparkling. Riondo Prosecco is an accessible option that’s ideal to enjoy any day of the year, but perfectly suited for special occasions. You’ll get six pours out of a bottle, so plan accordingly.

Good things come in threes In addition to a sparkling, you’ll want a red and a white option that are familiar and food-friendly. You can’t go wrong with a Merlot – look for labels from the Napa region. For a white, Terlato Friuli Pinot Grigio is exceptional and ideal for food pairing.

Wine math – what you didn’t learn in school Running out of wine mid-wedding isn’t an option, so it’s important to do the math. You should anticipate getting about five glasses

• Gift baskets a list of items that fit that theme. Keep in mind list items should easily fit in a basket or other container. Organize your list with one or two centerpiece, must-have items at the top and would-like-tohave items in descending order of desirability.

Choose a unique container Yes, it’s called a gift basket, but you don’t have to stick with a traditional wicker basket. Choose

(Continued from page 18) a container that really fits your theme. For example, a decorative plastic flowerpot is a great container for a gardening lover’s basket. Your sports enthusiast might appreciate a cooler stocked with team-themed items. Stock your basket Now that you have the container, you know how much you need to buy to fill it. Grab your list and head to the store. (BPT)

• Golden rules like Myrtle Beach with more than 100 golf courses, plentiful shopping, 60-miles of pristine coastline and lots of attractions for kids means there’s something for everyone.

Rule 4: Be involved, but don’t micromanage Provide guests with important information about the location, such as popular attractions, transportation specifics and amenity details. It is custom for the couple to pay for one or more events in addition to the wedding celebration, so let guests know what you’ve planned. However,

per bottle and assume that each guest will drink one glass per hour. Follow this rule and the wine will flow all night long, keeping you and your guests happy. Don’t break the bank, but stay away from the cheap stuff

C

(Continued from page 16) keep it to no more than one activity per day to allow time to explore as they please. Rule 5: Make gifts optional Guests spend more money to attend a destination wedding than a hometown affair. Be a gracious host and make gifts optional. By allowing their presence to be your wedding gift you’re showing good etiquette and understanding. This thoughtful gesture opens more funds to enjoy their vacation to the fullest, which is what you wanted when selecting a group destination wedding in the first place.

(BPT)

(Continued from page 19) Choosing an excellent wine doesn’t mean paying top-dollar, but buying too cheap can mean sacrificing quality. There are countless high-quality, delicious, wines available for $10-$20 per bottle, so leave the cheap stuff on the bottom shelf.

s g n i v a s Simple MONEY-SAVING WEDDINGPLANNING TIPS FOR ANY BUDGET

Weddings can be expensive, and most brides and grooms need to establish a budget before they start planning the wedding so they can afford to get hitched. Many couples are now getting married later in life and paying most or all of the costs themselves, so it’s important to start budgeting sooner than later. The following tips will help you and your fiancé keep your costs down so you can stay within your wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when you say, “Yes” to the second you, say, “I do.” Set a long engagement There are two benefits to having an engagement of a year or longer. First, it allows you to spread costs over several paychecks. For example, if you get engaged this spring, you can choose one month to put a down payment on the reception hall, and another month for purchasing the wedding dress and renting the tuxedo. A third month could be used for purchasing honeymoon trip tickets, and a fourth month for the photographer’s down payment.

During your engagement you can also start putting money into a savings account so you aren’t strapped for cash immediately following your wedding. The second reason a long engagement makes financial sense is that many couples will set a seasonal theme for their weddings, wanting to decorate the wedding and reception hall in that theme. The best time to purchase decorations and supplies for seasonal events is immediately following those events, because stores discount them when it’s time to get them off the shelves. If you are planning a fall theme, for example, keep an eye on the shelves for these kinds of discounted decorations right after Thanksgiving or Halloween. Longer engagements allow couples to take advantage of these seasonal discounts at least once, if not twice. Combine your resources A couple living in the same household can save hundreds of dollars monthly by combining expenses related to rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries and even transportation.

If you recently became engaged and are considering moving in together, calculate how much money you’ll be saving so you can apply those savings toward your wedding budget. During the moving process, you can save additional money. For example, when you combine your households, will you need two sets of dishes and furniture? Probably not. Perhaps you can even host a garage sale to sell the items you don’t need duplicates of – then you can put that money toward a wedding-related item. As you plan your big move, be sure to check out great moving services like Penske Truck Rental, which offers AAA and other great discounts to help soon-to-be newlyweds save money on moving costs. Find the best deals If you’ve always dreamed of getting married under a tent at a local park, you might discover that tent rental far exceeds your budget – especially if you live in an urban

Shedding for the wedding: YOUR 3-MONTH GUIDE

The dress, the tux, the guests, the honeymoon – there are so many details that go into your wedding day. All eyes are on you from the moment you walk down the aisle until the last dance of the night. Understandably so, brides and grooms often feel a lot of pressure to look their best on this important day – there’s nothing like a wedding to motivate you to get serious about your health and fitness goals. But crash diets or extreme exercise programs are never the answer. “It’s usually best to start thinking about your specific goals three months before your wedding day to allow plenty of time to establish your routine and adjust to a healthier lifestyle,” says Steve Bronston, certified personal trainer with Life Time, a healthy way of life company that operates more than 115 health

and wellness centers nationwide. “This creates a great opportunity for the bride and groom to support each other and get in shape together.” Bronston and Life Time offer a threemonth countdown plan to get you ready for the big day.

curls, and back exercises like rows and rear flys help brides looking to tone up for a strapless or low-back dress. Bronston suggests starting with two or three days of weight training, two or three days of cardio and one day of Pilates or yoga.

Weeks 1-4 Focus on changing your unhealthy habits. Nutrition is key when trying to lose weight, decrease body fat and increase your overall health. Work with a professional to lay out a detailed nutrition plan that consists of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats at each meal. Then, begin with a fitness program that incorporates weight training and cardio intervals. Arm exercises like overhead press, tricep push-ups and bicep

Weeks 5-8 Now it’s time to switch up your exercise routines. It’s a good idea to work with a personal trainer or join a group fitness class once or twice a week to shake up your routine and stay motivated. Your workouts should include one to two weight-training exercises per body part throughout the week. If you can, try to shift the amount of weight you use and number of repetitions you do to help stimulate

The many ways to recycle or repurpose a wedding gown Brides want to look their best on their wedding day. In addition to professional hairstyling and makeup, many brides invest in extravagant wedding gowns. Estimates suggest the average wedding gown costs $2,000. Brides who indulge by purchasing a designer dress can pay upward of $5,000 for their gowns. But even the most expensive dress will only be worn once by the blushing bride. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways brides can reuse or recycle their wedding gowns. HEIRLOOM One of the easiest ways to get more from your gown is to pass it down to another bride after your wedding day. Brides frequently save and preserve their gowns with the intent of passing it down as an heirloom to a daughter or another family member. Maintain the beauty of the gown by hiring a professional dry cleaner or wedding gown preservation service to treat and package the gown before storing it for some lucky lady’s future use. RELIGIOUS OUTFIT If you feel the style of the gown won’t keep up with the times, the fabric of the gown can be repurposed into a baptismal outfit or a communion dress or suit. Christian children are welcomed to the faith in white clothing, which is a symbol of purity and cleansing of sin. Seamstresses can fashion beautiful dresses or suits from original wedding gowns.

(METRO CREATIVE)

PLAY CLOTHES Many little girls and boys like to play dress-up. And rather than have a gown sitting in the closet, use it to make play clothes for little ones. The gown can be turned into a dress for a fairy princess or an ice queen.

NURSERY DÉCOR Decorate a baby’s nursery with a portion of the wedding dress, which can be turned into a crib skirt or pillow. The dress can also be used to create frilly curtains. A white dress will blend with just about any pattern.

ORNAMENTS OR FAVORS Lace from gowns can be turned into doilies, accents on other clothing, undergarments or decorative pieces for the home. A lace-covered lampshade can be a creative way to commemorate your wedding day for years to come.

ANNIVERSARY TABLECLOTH Measure out the length of a dining table, and cut and sew the gown into a special occasion tablecloth. Take it out each year on your anniversary.

ART Use the gown as a background for artwork. Simply stretch it across a wooden frame and staple on the back. You then have a handy canvas at the ready.

STUFFED ANIMALS Present children with cozy friends that they can love for years. Cut out a pattern for a bunny or bear and use it to craft a stuffed toy from the gown. Visit a local craft shop for stuffing fill and buttons for eyes.

DONATION Some less fortunate people cannot afford a gown. Work with a church or shelter and find out where you can donate the gown to be used by someone who normally would not wear something so lavish. THEATER PROP Many plays and musicals feature wedding scenes. An upstart theater company may benefit from having a wedding gown in their costume department. HANDKERCHIEF Cut out a piece of the gown and sew the hem. Offer it as the “something old” or “something borrowed” for a loved one’s wedding. Wedding gowns do not need to be relegated to a closet once a bride has said, “I do.” Turn that dress into something useful for years to come. BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

• Simple savings setting. This is where the Internet can be very helpful. Sometimes it’s cheaper to rent equipment like tents, folding chairs, wedding canopies and other decorations from businesses that are located outside of your community. To save even more, drive your personal car to the community where you’ll be renting the equipment, rent a Penske truck to transport all the equipment to where your wedding will be, and then return the equipment in the

truck once you’re finished with it. Then you can simply pick up your personal car for the drive home. If you have friends around for the wedding, ask them to be responsible for this part of the wedding so you can concentrate on other plans. When you and your loved one begin planning your wedding, keep your budget-balancing stress to a minimum with these helpful money-saving tips. (BPT)

change within your body. Continue a cardio routine of two to three days per week and add in another day or Pilates or yoga.

Weeks 9-12 It is important to keep up with your developing healthy habits as the weeks progress, but as your wedding day approaches, you’re sure to feel the stress of planning. “A new focus on rest and relaxation during this time period is key,” Bronston says. You can eat well and exercise perfectly, but without sleep, stretching, rest and recovery, your body is at risk of not functioning properly. Planning a wedding can be stressful and tiresome, but if you commit to a healthy diet and fitness plan, you’ll walk down the aisle feeling confident and ready for your new life ahead. (BPT)
