The most important meal of the day When kids get breakfast at school, the ‘light turns on’ teachers say
In a report released in March, educators revealed the effects that hunger and poverty have on kids, and what they see as the solution. According to the report, 76 percent of educators say they regularly see students who are struggling with hunger, and attest to the problems that causes. But many see a solution that works: breakfast served as part of the regular school day. For classroom teachers, students who are well fed are able to focus, function and achieve academic success. Surveying more than 1,000 school employees nationwide, the Hunger in Our Schools report released today by No Kid Hungry takes an in-depth look at the impact of childhood hunger through the eyes of teachers, principals, guidance counselors, bus drivers and more. This is the first year we’ve had a free breakfast program for all students,” said Margot Shaver, a first-grade teacher. “Not only are we feeding their physical needs, we’re feeding their emotional needs. The light turns on; they’re able to function in the classroom.” In February, news broke that for the first time, more than half of American public school students come from low-income families. School breakfast is a critical resource for these kids, but one that too few of them are taking advantage of. While nearly 21 million students in the United States eat free or reduced-price lunch, only half of them (11.2 million) are getting the school breakfast they also qualify for. Seventy-five percent of educators whose students eat breakfast in the classroom report that it makes a difference: students are more alert in class, exhibit less disciplinary problems and have better attendance. In addition, breakfast programs can foster a sense of classroom community and lessen the social stigma often faced by children from low-income families. “We’ve seen this work in school district after school district,” said Billy Shore, founder and CEO of Share Our Strength. “Some of the teachers we know that had reservations now tell us it’s the best thing that’s happened in their classroom.” Many educators say that traditional school breakfast – served in the cafeteria, early in the morning before the bell rings – isn’t always effective. “Most of the students that need breakfast the most arrive late, so they miss out on the breakfast program. Current breakfast programs do not work, because they aren’t catering to the population that needs them the most,” said guidance counselor Wintour McNeel. For the full report, visit HungerInOurSchools.org, and for more information on how breakfast can impact a child’s life, visit NoKidHungry.org/breakfast. The report was presented by C&S Wholesale Grocers and sponsored by the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation. No Kid Hungry’s ongoing work to increase school breakfast participation is generously supported by national sponsors Citi, Kellogg Company Fund and Tyson Foods.

BIRDS EYE! Company keeps community ties strong with nonprofit programs
Birds Eye foods in Darien is once again, donating the sweet corn for the annual Cornfest celebration. Free roasted corn on the cob will be served all Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Darien Park. According to the Birds Eye website, Clarence Birdseye was a man of vision, curiosity and persistence. He was a naturalist, a businessman and a skillful inventor who used his unique gifts to develop a flash freezing process that not only preserved food safely but also preserved its taste and appearance. Birdseye returned to the United States and formed the General Seafood Corporation with some wealthy partners who believed in his process. The partners’ financial support allowed the inventive Birdseye to develop and perfect a machine called a “Quick Freeze Machine” that he unveiled in 1926. Birdseye then focused on marketing. He tested refrigerated grocery display cases and entered into a joint venture agreement to manufacture them. Birdseye’s company began leasing refrigerated boxcars to transport frozen foods by rail in 1944. This made national distribution a reality and Birdseye a legend. Feed Kids Better Birds Eye has teamed with Share Our Strength to create the “Feed Kids Better” initiative. “We’re passionate about vegetables. We believe everyone should have access to them at any time, especially our kids. That’s why
Birds Eye teamed up with Share Our Strength to create the Feed Kids Better campaign. We believe that inspiring kids’ taste for vegetables is one step toward helping them lead healthy lives,” the Birds Eye website states. No Kid Hungry Share Our Strength is a national nonprofit organization that connects children with the nutritious food they need to lead healthy, active lives. Through its No Kid Hungry Campaign, Share Our Strength is helping to end childhood hunger in America by 2015. No child should go hungry in America, but 1 in 5 kids will face hunger this year. Using proven, practical solutions, No Kid Hungry is ending childhood hunger today by ensuring that kids start the day with a nutritious breakfast and families learn the skills they need to shop and cook on a budget. For more information, go to NoKidHungry.org. For more information about Birds Eye, visit www.birdseye.com.
Cargill funds SMILES scholarships Cargill Feed and Nutrition awarded a $3,500 grant this summer to Special Methods in Learning Equine Skills Inc. in Darien. The award will strengthen The Sherry Monty Scholarship Fund, which supports clients of the therapeutic horsemanship program. SMILES aims to improve the lives and living skills of adults and children with special needs and is celebrating 30 years of providing these services. The scholarship fund, named after the founder of the organization, Sherry Monty, supports clients who have demonstrated financial need through an application process. Financial awards from the scholarship fund reduce the program fee that a client will need to pay for their services. Awards are granted on a sliding scale basis. Scholarships at SMILES provide
financial support to families who want to see their loved one with special needs benefit from equine assisted activities and therapies. Scholarships are in demand, and replenishing the fund is a priority, according to the organization. “We are very grateful to the employees of Cargill, for choosing us as partners in their Cargill Cares program,” said Gay Stran, executive director of the organization. “Many lives will be touched, and many families will be supported through this gift”. SMILES offers individuals with special needs the joy of participating in an equine-assisted program that provides social, emotional, physical and personal rewards. More information about SMILES can be found at smilestherapeuticriding.org or by calling (262) 882-3470.
