BY n June, a group of national artists Vicky descended upon Wedig Delavan and, in STAFF a five-day fury, WRITER splashed 18 murals on walls across town. But when the Walldogs left and the town quieted down – adorned with its new paintings – those murals will need to be kept up. That’s where local artists come in. Delavan-Darien High School students have built and area residents have painted or designed 16 wooden Adirondack chairs that will be auctioned during the Walldog event to create a fund to maintain the murals. Downtown business owner Lorie Wuttke – who serves on the Delavan Walldog Committee that is organizing the vent – said the murals must be clear-coated every couple of years, depending on the exposure they face to the sun and elements. The committee’s goal is to raise $10,000 to $20,000 initially for the cost of maintenance, she said. Auctioning the Adirondack chairs is one of the fund-raising efforts going toward the goal.
I
Sitting on art Laura Jacobs-Welch, also a downtown business owner and committee member, said a lot of work went into the chairs and they’re expected to sell for hundreds of dollars. A chair painted by Dousman Transport bus driver Melissa Haney to look like a school bus is rumored to be highly in demand, Jacobs-Welch said.
Jacobs-Welch’s employee, Kellie Laurson, has her eye on a chair called, “Eagle.” Unlike the other painted chairs, for “Eagle” artist Cindy Austin created an intricate design with an eagle as the focal point using a woodburning carving technique. Wuttke said the artists submitted designs that the committee approved before designing the chairs. Six of the chairs were sold in a live auction under a tent at Phoenix Park on the Saturday of the Walldogs event on June 27. The live-auction chairs, artists and where they were displayed before the auction include: • “Eagle” by Cindy Austin at BMO Harris Bank; • “School Bus,” a Dousman Transport chair painted by Melissa Haney at Town Bank; • “Four Seasons,” which depicts a tree as it changes through the seasons, by Jennifer Kohnke at Bradley’s; • A circus-themed chair by Kay Lucier at Remember When; • “Think Green,” an all-green chair that features detailed paintings of leaves and animals in various shades of green,” by Sybil Brauneis Klug at Utiger’s; • “Radar,” which depicts and is signed by “M*A*S*H” actor Gary Burghoff by Kit and Brad Bandow at the Village Supper Club. A chair called “Anchor” by Cindy Austin is on display at the Delavan Lake Yacht Club and will be auctioned there. The remaining chairs will be sold in a silent auction after the Walldogs event. • see CHAIRS on page 5

The silent-auction chairs, artists and locations of their display are: • “Companion 1” and “Companion 2” – two chairs featuring sunsets by Mary Zeimentz at Geneva National; • A chair painted by the Wisconsin School for the Deaf eighth-grade art class that depicts the history of the state school established in 1852. The American Sign Language alphabet is painted on the seat of the chair, which is displayed at Town Bank; • “Circus Colors” – two brightly colored chairs by Susan Costoff that will be auctioned separately. One is on display at Ace Hardware, and the other, at Lake Lawn Resort; • “Firebirds” – the chair shows the WSD mascot painted by the eighth-grade art class and is on display at Anchor Bank.; • “Proud Peacock” by D-DHS art teacher Rachel Pfarr at Lake Lawn Resort; and • “Koi” by a D-DHS student. Jacobs-Welch and Laurson delivered the chairs to their display locations June 4 where residents can view them up until the Walldogs event, which begins June 24. Bidding on art On the night of the auction – the day before the Walldogs packed up their paint brushes – JacobsWelch’s husband, Michael Welch, auctioned the chairs at Phoenix Park. Jacobs-Welch said she doesn’t expect a minimum bid to be set but Welch, a professional auctioneer, will begin bidding at the level the item demands. Bids on the silent-auction chairs were also possible by calling Wuttke before the Walldogs event and at an information center where the chairs were displayed during the event. Wuttke said the committee is trying to secure the vacant building across from Bradley’s as its information center. The chairs were moved to Phoenix Park on June 27 for the auction.

Resort RENEWED
Lake Lawn offers fresh look with a nod to its historic past By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Along the shores of Delavan Lake, just two miles east of the City of Delavan on Highway 50, stands a resort that has been a part of the area’s history since the 1800s. With 250 wooded acres, and two miles of shoreline on the lake, Lake Lawn Resort is the premier resort in the area. The area has a history dating back nearly 150 years when the land became the winter home of the Mabie Circus. Long before Baraboo became noted as the state’s circus center, circuses wintered in Delavan. It was in fact, Anna Marie Phillips, widow of Jeremiah Mabie, who opened a modest guesthouse on the shore of Delavan Lake in 1878. This guesthouse was the beginning of the resort that today we know as Lake Lawn Resort. The resort went through a number of owners and through good times and bad. Popular in the 1930s and the 1940s when dancing and listening to big bands was the rage, the resort attracted popular swing bands and visitors would dance to the music in the ballroom. Lawrence Welk was a frequent performer. Nearly every year it seems there was expansion and changes to the resort as it continued to grow. 1942 marked the year that the resort changed from a summer resort to a year-round facility. It was a busy place for families. Swimming, fishing and boating on the lake kept children and adults busy. The golf course attracted many for their daily round of golf. Families returned year after year. In 1942 the cost for staying at a cottage on the grounds was $150 for two weeks. Jay Reader was one of the owners of the resort in the 1940s. Reader, a licensed pilot and owner of his own plane needed a landing place near the resort. He leased property across the highway from the resort and built a landing

strip. In her book Images of America, Lake Lawn, Ellen Baker Bell notes that 40 to 50 planes would fly in per day for lunch or a round of golf in the late 1940s. The airport is still in use today and provides complimentary landing and docking for visitors to Lake Lawn.

purchased it in May 2011and began to renovate. On a recent spring day, General Manager Dave Sekeres and Director of Sales and Marketing Tom Hyslop shared the story of Lake Lawn’s past and present. “The resort closed in 2010 but was reopened in 2011 by the new owners,” Sekeres said. “They upgraded the grounds, planting over 250 trees and added new flower beds and signage, changing the look to a warm and welcoming resort.” According to Sekeres, the investors spent about $10 million to upgrade and renovate the entire resort. Among the things added were an outdoor pool and whirlpool. The investors wanted to bring the resort back to the best it had been and to restore community pride in the resort. While the resort has been renovated and updated, it still retains the warm feeling of a country resort – not the sterile rooms and lobbies that are often seen in modern hotels. The rooms are warm and welcoming with rafters on the ceiling to give it a homey effect and warm furnishings to make guests feel comfortable. There are now 271 rooms available, many of them within 15 feet of the lake’s edge. Rooms have a variety of sizes from a simple room with a king sized bed to the two-floor loft rooms that will sleep from six to eight. Large suites with kitchenettes and fireplaces turn an ordinary hotel room into a homey comfortable place to stay. These large suites are perfect for families to enjoy some extra space. There is one Lake House, a separate building with three bedrooms, a full kitchen, and living area. Amenities include a private pier and bonfire pit. The house is often rented by wedding parties as a place for the bridal party to stay and dress. Corporations often rent the lake house as a hospitality center.
ACTIVITIES ABOUND
When visiting Lake Lawn be ready to take part in the many activities offered. Is golf an absolute necessity for your vacation? The 18-hole Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn golf course, designed by renowned course architect Dick Nugent, will be a challenge. Prices are reasonable so you won’t destroy the vacation budget on the golf course. The course offers programs for the young and old. A junior golf instruction program can introduce your children to golf. The Wednesday senior golf program will help those over 55 have a fulfilling golf experience and includes a casual lunch. The Pro Shop has been expanded and carries a variety golfing accessories. If golf is not your idea of summer fun, spend some time at the pool or along the lakefront. With both an indoor and an outdoor pool, swimming is on the schedule whatever the weather. Those who are parents or have traveled with children always wait for the dreaded “I’m bored.” On a vacation at Lake Lawn Resort there are so many activities that there is no time to be bored. A special treat for women is a day at the Calladora Spa – whether for a quick manicure or haircut or a full day of spa services, including a massage and facial. It’s a great gift idea for mom. A visit to the activity center on the lakeside of the guest rooms will provide many outdoor activities. The newly renovated center in addition to rentals of outdoor equipment has a games room. What is your favorite outdoor activity? With biking, volleyball, softball, basketball, tennis, horseshoes, a children’s playground and miniature golf available all family members should be able to find at least one activity that interests them. It’s a
good time to learn a new skill or perhaps relearn that tennis game that you haven’t played in years.

FOUR RESTAURANTS
While renovating the resort, special attention was given to revising the restaurants. There are four restaurants, all specializing in different types of food. There is something to please any palate. The premier restaurant is the Frontier, which specializes in American heartland cuisine served in a beautiful rustic room overlooking the shore of Delavan Lake. The tables, with white tablecloths adorned with candles, make this the perfect romantic setting. Looking for a more casual dinner? Stop at the Isle of Capri where Italian specialties abound. The Italian artisan wood fired pizzas or gourmet sandwiches are popular menu choices. The Clubhouse Sports Bar, with its picturesque view of the golf course, is a cozy and relaxing place to enjoy an after golf drink or a meal from the grill. The Lookout Bar and Eatery is a pub-like atmosphere near the outdoor pool, where customers can relax and enjoy a drink or one of their pub foods. The Lookout Pub also has cookouts and, in true Wisconsin fashion, Friday fish fry. After you have eaten at your choice of restaurants, wander out to the fire pit to return to your childhood and enjoy making and eating s’mores.
SERVICE WITH A SMILE
While the amenities at Lake Lawn Resort are wonderful, it is the spirit of the people who are employed there that give visitors a comfortable feeling of being welcomed. Sekeres and Hyslop are proud of their staff. All are highly trained in professional service and are educated in how to help guests create memories. Throughout the year activities change with the seasons. Since this is a fourseason resort, it offers activities any time of the year. In winter there is ice skating, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing when Mother Nature provides the snow. The resort is also a popular place for weddings. Each year about 75 couples exchange vows on the grounds. Many

The Great Room has been a part of Lake Lawn since its construction in the 1920s. Used as a ballroom where popular bands of the day such as Lawrence Welk played, it continues to be an important part of the resort. choose an outdoor ceremony on the lakefront. The 80-year-old ballroom is a favorite scene for weddings with its intricate ceiling and beautiful chandeliers. Those planning a dream wedding in the ballroom should contact the resort as soon as possible. It is often booked 18 months to 2 years ahead. The resort is very involved in community affairs and supports local clubs and organizations, helping them with community service days. They strive to work with the community to encourage other businesses to be successful. Lake Lawn Resort owns a trolley, which takes guests into Delavan where they have the opportunity to visit the historic city. The brick-paved downtown and statues of circus animals are an integral part of Delavan’s history. Many of the visitors to Lake Lawn Resort have a long history of visits. According to Sekeres many of today’s
guests have memories of Lake Lawn from their childhood. Now they return with their families to build the same memories for their children.
MUSIC ON THE LAKEFRONT
Throughout the summer listen for the sounds of music coming from the lakefront. Check Lake Lawn Resort’s website for a list of live performances. It is impossible to include all the activities available at the Lake Lawn Resort in one article so frequent visits to the resort or the website are required. The resort is close enough that visitors from Milwaukee and Chicago can easily make several trips each year. Lake Lawn Resort is at 2400 E. Geneva Street, two miles east of Delavan. Contact them by phone at (262) 728-7950 or visit their website, www.lakelawnresort.com, for more information.
