The card, titled “Santa on Parade,” was kept a secret from Wallem this year as it features Santa in his sleigh passing Wallem’s restored Elkhorn Garage. Wallem and his wife Sue have portrayed the happy holiday couple in the parade for many years.

ith the winter holiday season in full swing, artist T. James Carson continued Elkhorn’s Christmas Card legacy this year, featuring one of the city’s iconic landmarks. With the cards historically featuring iconic buildings and events within the proximity of downtown, according to Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chris Clapper, Carson went with a bit of a different approach this week, featuring a couple near and dear to the city’s hearts. For this year’s card, Carson featured Santa and Mrs. Claus perched upon their sleigh as they pass the Elkhorn Garage, directly across from the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce at 203 E. Walworth St. However, a closer look reveals the card honors much more than the holiday couple, but the Elkhorn couple who have famously portrayed the Clauses for many years: Gary and Sue Wallem. As for Elkhorn Garage, the building was one of many in the city restored by Gary Wallem, which includes the garage, the chamber building, or Uncle Hunk’s Junk, and the old train depot. Clapper said with the traditional designs for the cards being nearly tapped out, it was debate as to where to go with this year’s card. She said they gave Carson several ideas of different buildings in the city, including Wallem’s unique buildings. While a collage of all of Wallem’s buildings just wasn’t possible to condense into a single Christmas card, something

Santa and Mrs. Claus pass by the historic Elkhorn Garage in a sleigh full of toys and goodies on the cover of the 2015 Elkhorn Christmas Card. Portrayed by Gary and Sue Wallem, Elkhorn residents who have restored numerous buildings in the city including the Elkhorn Garage, the holiday couple bears an uncanny resemblance to the two.

even more magical came about: the scene depicting the Wallems in full costume, a true representation of not only the city, but the holiday spirit. “This is the first time that someone has been the main focus of a Christmas Card. You look at it, and you know it’s them. That’s Gary and Sue in their suits,” Clapper said. The Wallems were in attendance at the unveiling, a big surprise that honored Gary and his wife and the way they carry on the Christmas spirit year after year. “He bought cards that day and you can ask him, the first person he sent one to was his mom,” Clapper said Carson’s original watercolor painting used for this year’s Christmas Card is on display at the Chamber office, 203 E. Walworth St., and will be until next year’s card is unveiled. Some of his previous paintings are on display at Matheson Memorial Library, 101 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn. A Christmas tradition The watercolor painting by artist Tim Carson was unveiled Oct. 18 during Oktoberfest celebrations. This is Carson’s third year working with the chamber on the Elkhorn tradition. Carson is the third painter to carry on the Elkhorn tradition since the Christmas Cards were introduced several decades ago.

Beginning in 1958, Cecile Johnson, an artist from New York, was commissioned by the Ford Motor Company to create a series of six watercolor paintings to illustrate an article for the “Ford Times,” a monthly publication from the company. Using the City of Elkhorn as inspiration, five of Johnson’s watercolor paintings were later used as artwork for Christmas Cards by a major publisher, distributing a little piece of Elkhorn Christmas cheer to thousands around the globe. Five of Johnson’s paintings are displayed in Elkhorn City Hall at 9 S. Broad St. Three decades later, the tradition was revived, with Jan Castle Reed being selected to paint 14 different winter scenes from around the city. Painting with acrylics, Reed was commissioned annually until she retired in 2010. Reed donated all of her oil paintings to Matheson Memorial Library where they remain on display permanently. Want to buy a card? This year’s cards, as well as those from the past, are available for purchase at the chamber office, 203 E. Walworth St., for $10 for 10. Individual cards are also available upon request. For more information, contact the chamber at (262) 723-5788. 2016 ELKHORN OUR TOWN

s a community, it’s important to work together, supporting each other and helping those in need. The community of Elkhorn provides many opportunities for people to lend a helping hand, including, but not limited to, the following organizations: The Elkhorn Fund Since 2007, the Elkhorn Fund has strived to provide the community with a financial endowment to aid various causes and fund numerous scholarships. According to Jeff Rosendahl of the Elkhorn Fund, who has been involved with the fund for the past five years, the board looks at the fund as the community’s savings account. “We’re building up an endowment so there will always be a fund here for the future,” he said. “There’ll always be money to grant to non-profit projects. “It’s being invested and each month we’re making interest off of it … the idea is each year it continues to grow, each year there is an Elkhorn Fund here, providing that safety net for the community.” The organization started out in 2007 with help from its founding sponsor, the People’s Bank of Elkhorn, who agreed to match the organization’s contributions if it could raise over $20,000 a year for its first five years. Donations to the fund over the years have come from numerous groups, individuals, businesses and clubs, including the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and school groups. While the organization continues to save money for the community, breaking the $300,000 mark in the endowment fund this past month, it also returns some of the money to the community each year. According to Rosendahl, including the amount the organization gave back to the community this year, it has returned approximately $40,000 since 2007 to worthy non-profit causes. In the past the Elkhorn Fund has given out the money to numerous causes and recipients such as the food pantry, supplying money for turkeys during the holidays, Hope Now, and Habitat for Humanity when they built a home on E. Marshall Street.

Lions club members join Mayor Brian Olson this past December at the corner of Lincoln and Walworth streets for the dedication of the new flag pole. Pictured above are: Karthik Vaddi (front), Elkhorn Lions Club President Mark Enger (middle, from left), Kenny Stowell, Randy Dricken, Bill Trewyn, Cleo Filer, Olson, Joey Douglas (back, from left), Dick Gilkey, Matt Enger and Judy Arline. The Lions Club originally dedicated three flag poles, which were installed on July 4, 1996, and featured the American flag, the Wisconsin flag and the City of Elkhorn flag. The now single flag pole, features both the national and state flags and the hope is to one day again include the city flag, a project Olson said he is working on.

“We’ve always thought if we have people with basic human needs that aren’t being met, we want to try and help out with that first,” Rosendahl said. For more information on how to donate or get involved with the Elkhorn Fund, Rosendahl welcomes phone calls to his home phone at (262) 742-5330. The Kiwanis Club Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Kenosha in the spring of 1922, the club raises tens of thousands of dollars annually through fundraising and donations, using it to fund area projects and those in need. Beginning under the leadership of Frank Holton of the Frank Holton and Company band instrument factory as the club’s first president, the club has many notable accomplishments including the Sunset Park band shell, and the initiation of the project that provided Elkhorn residents with a public swimming pool. According to former Elkhorn Kiwanis Club President Elect Henry Lopez, with 37 members, the club disperses all of the money it fundraises to the various area organizations that have a need for funding. “We do scholarships for the high school students here in Elkhorn, things like that,” he said.

Over the years the club has held numerous fundraising events including the Fit for Life bicycle event, fudge sales, duck races, and the Christmas ornament, which according to Lopez has become somewhat of a staple in the community. For approximately the past 11-12 years, the Elkhorn Kiwanis Club has sold a unique Christmas ornament as a fundraiser for area organizations. “A lot of people actually collect them, they buy it every year and they save them as collectables” Lopez said. Lopez encourages those interested in joining the club to attend a Kiwanis Club meeting, held at noon every Monday in the Community Room at Matheson Memorial Library, 101 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn. The Lions Club Sponsored by the Williams Bay Lions, the newly organized Elkhorn Lions Club held its charter night on Jan. 21, 1953, with 35 members under the leadership of its first president, Wendell Bagnal. The club began community projects in the 1950s including the installation of playground equipment for a small city park, bike racks at the municipal building CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

The club pledged $4,000 towards Elkhorn’s public pool and pledged $2,500, and raised an additional $3,000, to help replace the county grandstand after a fire in 1970. A peek at the past Time capsule removed from cornerstone of Elkhorn’s former Masonic lodge BY

Top: Mark Weseman, of Elkhorn, removes a 101-year-old time capsule from the cornerstone of the former masonic lodge in Elkhorn, now the St. Patrick Trinity Center, last summer. Aug.1, 2015, marked the 101st anniversary of when the cornerstone was laid in place. Above: The Rev. Oriol Regales (from left), Mark Weseman and Bill Petkoff look over a document pulled from the time capsule.

It’s not everyday someone gets to be the first person to touch, feel and look at something more than 100-years-old; however, when crews pulled a time capsule from Elkhorn’s former Masonic lodge Saturday afternoon, that’s exactly what some had the opportunity to do. “It was kind of like Christmas morning a little bit for us,” Senior Warden of the Southern Lakes Masonic Lodge No. 12 Daniel Johnson said. “You walk in there, you find the present and you don’t know what’s inside and you start opening it and looking. That’s really what the atmosphere was like at the time.” Johnson said members of the Southern Lakes Masonic Lodge No. 12 learned of the time capsule from the lodge’s records, noting the time capsule has been listed in the records to way back when the cornerstone was first laid on Aug. 1 in 1914. Johnson said the fact that something was hidden in the cornerstone of the old lodge isn’t necessarily uncommon for masonic lodges. “So, we had a pretty good idea something was in there,” he said. Though the Rock of Jesus church had approached them previously about opening the cornerstone, Johnson said the church had wanted to essentially keep what was in there, something they weren’t interested in. Now, with the old lodge fairly recently being purchased by St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the building soon to be named the St. Patrick Trinity Center, it finally presented the lodge the opportunity it was looking for. In an annual fellowship meeting between the masonic lodge and the Knights of Columbus chapter that works out of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Johnson said they were approached with the same offer, but this time, the more they discussed it, the time seemed right. “We decided we’d try to obviously preserve whatever was in there and re-seal it after we looked at whatever was in there to preserve it for the next generation,” he said. With Aug.1, 2015, marking the 101st anniversary of when the cornerstone was laid, crews pulled out the bricks on the side of the building and reached inside to remove the time capsule. “From a historical standpoint, time capsules are one of those things that sort of let you walk back in time and learn a little bit about the previous community and the organizations that used to exist,” Johnson said. “It’s a really neat historical thing for sure.” Though the masons as an organization is a little smaller than it used to be, Johnson said historically it has served as a pretty large part of society and taking a peek inside the time capsule showed the numerous historical figures who were masons, many of which whose names are still of importance in the community, including the Lauderdales and others that “ring a bell when you look at them.” Overall, Johnson said the contents of the time capsule – a copper box a little smaller than a shoebox, which contained numerous documents including a listing of the different lodge members of the time, coins, several hand-written letters, a copy of the Elkhorn Independent and more – were remarkably well CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

preserved despite being sealed in a cornerstone for 101 years, battered by brutal winter after winter. With gloved hands, Johnson said they removed the top from the copper box and began to sift through the numerous documents and letters, some multiple pages. “It’s one of those things where you open it and you don’t know what you’re expecting, we didn’t have anything in the lodge listing what the contents were,” he said. “It was really fascinating because it was almost like a bottomless pit a little bit. Every time you pulled out a document, you thought that was going to be the last thing and there was another thing below it.” The time capsule and its contents remained on display for a period of time, along with a photo of the cornerstone being laid in 1914, at the former Masonic Hall in Elkhorn. Over that time, Johnson said the idea was to make some copies and take several photos of the contents for a historical display at places such as Southern Lakes Masonic Lodge No. 12. The combined groups later placed the items back in the copper box, along with some items from 2015, and sealed it back into the building’s cornerstone. “The idea simply being that we want our members to know what’s in there, but at the same time, it’d be neat for someone 50 years, or 100 years, to dig back in there and rediscover it,” he said. “It was definitely one of the most moving events that I’ve ever been part of … the whole day itself was just a really neat experience.” Johnson said Mark Weseman, who represents Elkhorn’s Knights of Columbus chapter, intended to have the display available to AARON GOTTSCHALK Our Town anyone who would like to see it. Mark Weseman holds up a copy of the Elkhorn Independent, which was placed among the many items in the capsule which in- For more information on the time capsule and how, where and cluded letters documenting the laying of the cornerstone, coins and when copies of the contents of the time capsule can be viewed, call the Elkhorn Knights of Columbus at (262) 723-4998. lists of area masons at the time.

he Elkhorn Area Public School District strives on a daily basis to fulfill our district’s Statement of Beliefs. Our beliefs are guiding standards that help shape our decisions and day-to-day operations and we’ve developed in cooperation with the community. I would like to take a moment and share these fundamental beliefs with you. We believe all children can learn, every student learns differently and all children are valued and respected. We believe effort, motivation, and challenge are essential to learning and taking an active role in the learning process is every student’s responsibility. Helping children realize their potential is our foremost priority. We believe learning is a life-long process that takes place in the home, school, and community. We believe schools foster students’ abilities to make decisions, cooperate,

We believe a quality education depends upon dedicated, well-trained staff and that safe, healthful, up-to-date facilities enhance the learning process. We believe continuous improvement

leads to excellence. In addition to our beliefs we are striving to be in the “Top Ten Percent” in all we do.” It is our belief that if each and everyone of us can perform at the top ten percent, then as a district we will have no problem fulfilling our goals and living up to our Statements of Belief. We recognize that on a day-to-day basis we will not always perform at that level, but it is our hope that as we strive to be in the “Top Ten Percent In All We Do”, we will elevate our performance and thus the service to our parents, students, and the community. This target applies to all of us, as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. “A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.” By striving to meet this target, we know that we will succeed in maximizing student growth and academic achievement for all of our students. 2016 ELKHORN OUR TOWN

Above: A young boy plays in one of Elkhorn’s Sunset Pool’s new water features. The pool was remodeled prior to the 2015 summer season and reopened in June of last summer. The pool now features updated locker rooms, a concession stand, slides, zero-depth entry and a “splash pad,” an area for younger pool-goers to get wet and wild without diving into the deep end. At left: A mother and her young child take in the sites and sounds at the new pool, enjoying the many features available for children in shallow depths.
