As the boats were removed from the lake and placed into storage and the summertime residents of the Chain O’ Lakes area returned to their city homes, the seasons began to change from fall to winter. In the late 1800s and the first part of the 1900s, the change of season into winter changed the lake from an area of recreation to an area of active business. Just as the farmer’s fields produced a crop in the summer that needed to be harvested, the lakes themselves – as the temperature slipped below freezing and a field of ice formed over its surface –became a field ripe for harvesting. As long as the cold weather continued through the winter the ice could be harvested over and over and used locally or shipped to the City of Chicago to preserve food. The cutting of the ice was an arduous process that began with the ice harvesters, having to scrape the snow off the ice at regular intervals long before the actual process of harvesting began. The snow acted as an insulator and would hamper the freezing process if not cleared. Measuring the ice frequently determined its readiness for harvest. When the ice reached its ideal depth, the true work would begin.

Frigid, treacherous work The team of ice cutters and horses would make their way to the shore. Using a plow-like tool, attached to a horse and guided by one of the ice cutters, the job of scoring the ice blocks would

begin. Once the deep score was placed on the ice, marking the rectangular blocks that would be cut into individual blocks of ice, the workers would begin to saw them apart. A channel was then cleared which would allow the blocks to be floated toward the shore. “Icehouses both large and small could be found throughout the Chain of Lakes,” said Ken Buchardt, vice president of the Fox Lake-Grant Township Area Historical Museum society. “Snow was often a problem

for the ice cutters as it would ruin the ice. If it snowed too early the ice would become cloudy. Cloudy ice did not sell as well. Snow would need to be removed from the ice causing more work for the harvesters.” Depending on the size of the operation, the ice blocks would be moved either onto a wagon pulled by horses and taken to the rail station or to the ice house, or would be moved up a conveyor belt to the icehouse for storage.

• Ice harvest The ice harvesters were a combination of local residents and temporary workers who drifted into town. The large icehouses often brought in men from Skid Row in Chicago to work under a local foreman. They worked for room and board and meager wages of a couple of dollars each day. The work was not easy or enjoyable for they were out in the elements for the entire time of daylight. Dangers lurk One of the dangers of the job was falling into the lake, which happened with some regularity. When a worker fell, other workers would

(Continued from front page) gather around with a tool called a pike, regularly used to slide the blocks of ice, to pull him out of the freezing water. Horses, which were used to both score the ice and move the blocks, also on occasion fell through the ice. Attempts to rescue the horse included placing a rope around its neck and guiding it to shore. As the blocks were cut free they were channeled to shore where they were either loaded onto a conveyor to be stored in the shore-side icehouse or placed in railroad cars to be sent to Chicago. The ice would be stored in the icehouse through the

following summer. Straw, grasses, sawdust and even horsehair were placed over the blocks to insulate them. The summers of 1936 and 1937 were said to have been very hot and sitting on ice blocks in the icehouses was one of the ways people cooled off. The large ice companies built lodges next to the icehouse to house their workers. Armour the large meat packing company, built an icehouse in Round Lake that was said to be the largest working icehouse when it was built in 1901. They harvested 100,000 tons of ice each winter, which was used to cool the meat packing plant and transported meat. Fire and ice Icehouses were mostly constructed of wood, as were most buildings of the time. They easily caught fire and burned to the ground. Some were rebuilt but as the need for ice decreased in

the mid 1900s, fewer were rebuilt. The large Armour icehouse suffered the fate of many icehouses of the era, as it was destroyed by fire on Aug. 19, 1917. This one was thought to have been due to arson, with speculation the fire was started by a union trying to make a foothold in the company. The building was not rebuilt because manufacturers were then able to produce ice by electric refrigeration. The lodging building continued in operation as a summer retreat for Armour employees. The ice industry ended with the introduction of electric refrigerators. There was no longer a need for the iceman to appear two or three times a week to deliver the ice for the icebox to keep food from spoiling. By the late 1940s the refrigerator had replaced the icebox and refrigerated railroad cars carried meats and milk to the City of Chicago.

Left: Icehouses could be seen around the lakes as ice was harvested and stored in them. The icehouses ranged from small structures such as this one to buildings several stories tall. They were built of wood and insulated with straw, grasses and sawdust. This was Tweed’s Ice House on Duck Lake.

Ice harvesting was a difficult job requiring workers to chop or saw blocks of ice from the lake, then guide them to shore. The blocks were cut in uniform size so that they could be stacked and stored more easily in the icehouse.

Rebecca Zellar (left) plays Rosalind and Denise Lanier portrays Celia in PM&L Theater’s production of Shakespear’s “As You Like It,” which opens a three-weekend run on Jan. 27.

Shakespeare comes to PM&L stage William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” opens at PM&L Theatre, Antioch, on Jan. 27, and will run for three weekends. “As You Like It,” as adapted by director Chuck Lindas (recent PM&L directing credits include “Assassins” and “The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee”), is a pastoral comedy that follows its heroine, Rosalind (played by Rebecca Zellar, Antioch), as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court to find safety and, eventually, love. She and her cousin, Celia (Denise Lanier, of Hainesville), encounter many memorable characters in the Forest of Arden, notably the melancholy Jaques (Jerod Howard, Bristol, Wis.), who speaks many of Shakespeare’s most famous lines (“All the world’s a stage” and “A fool! A fool!

I met a fool in the forest”). “As You Like It” will run Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 27, 28, Feb. 3, 4, 10, and 11 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Jan. 29, Feb. 5, and 12 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.pmltheatre.com and are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve tickets directly through the box office, which opens Jan. 16, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and one and a half hours before curtain on show dates. PM&L Theatre is at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch. mediately. • Create a doghouse that is raised off the ground and have it face away from the wind. The doorway should be covered with waterproof covering or heavy plastic. • Check the pet’s water dish to make sure water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls because the pet’s tongue can stick and freeze to metal dishes. • Wipe the pet’s feet with a damp towel before the pet licks them and irritates its mouth after pet is exposed to salt. Trim excess fur from the pads so that ice and snow do not accumulate between its toes. • Wipe up spills of antifreeze and store out of reach. If possible, use antifreeze coolant made with propylene glycol. If this is swallowed in small amounts, it will not hurt pets. • Don’t allow a dog to run freely on open ice. Residents of Lake County are able to get radon-testing kits through the Lake County Health Department throughout the month of January. Radon is an odorless and colorless gas naturally found in rock and soil. It has the ability to seep into homes through cracks in the basement floor and foundation, crawl spaces, poorly sealed sump pumps, floor drains, porous cinder block walls and other foundation floor and wall penetrations. Although radon gas is measurable everywhere, the highest readings are normally found in the basement and first floor levels of homes and apartments.

“The best time to check for radon is during cold weather when windows and doors remain closed,” says Lake County Health Department’s Interim Executive Director Mark Pfister. Short-term test kits are available through the health department for $10. The cost includes return postage, laboratory analysis and interpretation by health department staff. “If radon is found in your home, it is important to contact a radon professional to assess and prevent the radon gas from continuing to enter your home,” says Pfister. For more information, call (847) 377-8020.

William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” opens at PM&L Theatre, Antioch, on Jan.

Main Street, Antioch. bation with conditions that include six months in the Walworth County Jail with work-release privileges and 10 hours of community service for each year of probation. According to the criminal complaint, Laflamme, who was standing next to a van with the sliding door open at Alpine Valley Music Theater on July 9, said, “Molly” twice to a group that included an undercover officer. The officer knew “Molly” is a common term for ecstasy and other substances. Laflamme offered the officer two “Molly” for $20, and then said, “You guys aren’t cops are you?” When the officer didn’t respond, Laflamme threw a multi-colored case he was holding into the van, according to the complaint. The officer searched the van and found 14 individual packages of a white powder, which tested positive for methylone, a stimulant, and weighed 1.8 grams, according to the complaint. Laflamme was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in McHenry County in 2005. Judge Kristine Drettwan gave Laflamme until March 4 to report to the Walworth County Jail to allow him time to find employment in the area for work release.

A recap of how many have been helped this past year Another year of our good works has gone by and we are so grateful for all we have accomplished together. Your generosity has brought our charity work to so many struggling in poverty throughout our communities. The Time is Now to Help and volunteers have brought smiles to the faces that previously had only sadness and tears. Our assistance has changed the lives of hundreds of senior citizens, children, the handicapped, veterans, working poor families and single mothers this past year. We will try our best to recap such an exceptional year of assistance. We began 2016 with the Fox Charities $25,000 Christmas Miracles matching grant, yes the same matching grant donors that have so generously provided the Fox Charities $25,000 Christmas Wish matching grant we are matching right now. We used these matching grant funds to help a widow and her two sons. We brought our assistance to this family after they suffered a painful loss and now faced foreclosure and financial distress. We together started the year by saving this family from further distress when we found a rental that would allow their beloved dog Sammy. This dog was so special to them as it had been her husband’s beloved companion that stayed by his side throughout the illness that finally took his life. Thanks to all of you we kept this family from enduring more sadness and loss in their lives. This family continues to maintain

As I explained, our plan of assistance to the young woman I watched her eyes fill with tears. She began to weep, saying, “I never knew there were good people in this world outside of my church and my neighbors. Everywhere I go people stare at my scars, and every time I look in the mirror I am reminded of the worst in people. You have proved to me there are more good people.” In April we were blessed with the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant. Again we were able to help so many thanks to Mr. Ziegler’s motivation and generosity. One of our columns reflected your generosity when it shared a visit I had made to two sisters living in desperate poverty. One of the sisters was both physically and mentally handicapped and being cared for by her sister. When she found out she was getting a new refrigerator, after living for some time without any refrigeration and desperately food insecure, she was overwhelmed with gratitude. When I told her we were also going to do some much needed home repairs, food, utility assistance, mattresses and car repairs the woman covered her face with her hands and I could hear her sobbing. I said, “Don’t cry. The Time Is Now to Help has many supporters that want to help you. The people in your community do not want you living like this without heat and food. They want to help.” The woman tried to deny any further assistance but once

I made her realize how this would help not just her but her sister as well she finally gave in. Once she had good food and a refrigerator I even discovered what an excellent cook she was. Our caring and sharing hearts removed the pains of poverty for these two sisters caught up in the grasp of poverty. In May we brought our assistance to a proud veteran that tried to hide his tears of gratitude and relief. In July we shared the difficulties in finding employment when you are not quite retirement age and still need the income from a job. In August I watched as a senior woman painfully tried to eat the food I had brought to her. Her teeth were in need of dental care that she could not afford. The senior woman tried to hide her wincing behind her hand as she ate. I told the senior woman how we would be helping her with more than just her painful teeth. She humbly replied, “Bringing me these two bags of food and toiletries has helped me so much today. It is so scary to not know where your next meal will come from or to stand in line at a food pantry at my age. It is also embarrassing to run out of something as simple as toilet paper or toothpaste and not have the money to purchase them. It is frightening to have to choose between removing the terrible pain in my mouth and paying my rent. Your donors probably do not know these things so please tell them how much this means to this poor old woman.” She got tears in her eyes as I reached out for her

hand and said, “You are not old. You are just struggling like so many other people in our communities. We will help you get healthy and get back on your feet.” And I am proud to say we helped all these people thanks to all of you and your generosity. In September we were touched by the generosity of the Barnabas $50,000 matching grant. These funds, matched by all of you brought a much-needed boost during a slow time for our donations. We were struggling to bring our assistance to as many of our fellow creations as possible and as funds would allow. This matching grant was enthusiastically met and just as enthusiastically distributed to those most in need. In September I also shared another painful visit where I felt the sharp pain of loss and grief. When you add these to the pains of poverty it is felt even sharper. A long illness can wipe out a family’s finances and leave the surviving family to struggle with not only the loss of a spouse but also the loss of income and devastating bills. The woman in this column was also pregnant with a much longed for child that was destined to never meet their father. This woman and her older son needed car repairs, utility assistance and direction on how to get her life in order. With our assistance she was able to do just that. We even provided a crib for the new baby. At my last visit the woman tearfully thanked us for all we had done to help

Historian Jim Gibbons (right) answers questions about the geographical layout of Pearl Harbor on the fateful day of Dec 7, 1941, just prior to the Japanese surprise attack for attendees Jeanne (from left) and Fred Thomas, and Deb and Mike Racette, at the Antioch Public Library District, 757 Main St., Antioch, on Sunday. Gibbons’ presentation, which included posters, diagrams, and a slide show, traced the origins of the attack from a half-century earlier in the time of Queen Victoria through the many subsequent foreign entanglements that eventually led to World War II. Gibbons’ program was originally scheduled for the more appropriate month of December but was postponed because of snow. Gibbons is slated to return to the library later this year for two other presentations on Princess Diana and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. For more information on programs held at the Antioch Public Library, call (847) 395-0874 or visiting their website at apld.info.

them. She looked wistfully at the crib and said, “I can’t believe this new little one will be here any day. All these years of longing for another baby and God chooses to give us one now. Maybe he knew this would be what I would need to help me continue to live after my husband died. This baby and my son will force me to smile and to even enjoy living again.” Both she and her son gave me a hug and again thanked us for all we had done to save them from what would have most certainly been a quick downward spiral further into poverty. Your support prevented that from happening now and in their future. In October we were blessed to hear Richard Driehaus would again be offering his generous Richard H. Dreihaus $30,000 matching grant. We will soon be sharing with you where every penny of that grant was spent to provide poverty relief. In November we began the Fox Charities $25,000 Christmas Wish matching grant. We are happy to announce we have successfully matched this grant as well. These matching grant funds have been used over the past few weeks to indeed grant many Christmas Wishes to those most in need. And this grant brings us full circle from a Christmas Miracle to a Christmas Wish in 2016. We hope you all had a very blessed Christmas and we wish you a healthy and Happy New Year. We greet the New Year with enthusiasm knowing you are there beside us every step of the way. You give us the strength to not only see and hear the pain that fills many of our fellow creations lives; you also give us the strength to do something to remove that pain. In addition to the people helped in the columns you our faithful readers have read, together we have helped over 500 people this past year. We have stepped up in our mission together and have removed an extreme amount of pain and suffering. We have eliminated the fear and shame of poverty. We have replaced hunger, being felt by everyone from children to senior citizens, with
