Cooperative effort creates medical transport service Bus takes residents to medical appointments throughout area By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
For residents in Grant, Lake Villa and Antioch townships, transportation to a medical appointment is only a call away. The three townships have an intergovernmental agreement that allows them to provide this service every Wednesday. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. and finishes when all the appointments are completed. Antioch Township Trustee and member of the board of directors for the Antioch Area Health Accessibility Association Peter Grant realized there is little public transportation in Northeastern Lake County and there are residents who need to get to medical appointments. “There are buses in Waukegan, McHenry and other areas, but none in Antioch, Lake Villa or Grant townships,” he said. “Seniors and people in our three townships with medical issues have very few transportation options.” A demographic study done several years ago showed that the number of doctors in the Antioch area was much lower than in other areas and this meant that Antioch residents must travel longer distances for medical service.
Grant began to explore ways to serve residents with the need to reach medical services. He called Gloria Stevens, Antioch Area Health Accessibility Association network nurse and she suggested that Grant work with Dick Davis, co-leader of the AAHAA depression and bipolar support alliance and a partnership was born. Grant approached the Antioch Town Board with a request for a line item for this service last spring during budgeting. And he got together with PACE transportation officials to see what options were available. The PACE bus service, which goes only to destinations for medical services, is possible because of an intergovernmental agreement between Grant, Lake Villa and Antioch townships. The service is free to all riders, regardless of economic situations. All people need to do is call the Antioch Township office at (847) 395-3378 to schedule a ride. “It can be helpful if you call a day or so ahead of time,” Grant said. “But if you call at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, we will do out best to accommodate you.”

Santa, is it really you?
JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Cael Cramond, 4, pulls on the beard of Santa Claus to test for authenticity during his visit to the North Pole (a.k.a., the Buffalo Grove Metra station) on Dec. 11. Children, parents, and grandparents dressed in their pajamas, met at the Antioch Metra train station, hopped on board a special Metra train, and took a ride to Santa country where they were entertained with lunch, games, prizes, dancing, cookies and hot chocolate. Santa met with each child and then read the group a story before sending them back on the return-trip train to Antioch. The North Pole Express is sponsored by the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department.

When the election dust settled last month, residents of Paddock Lake had voted yes to the use of golf carts within village boundaries. The Paddock Lake Village Board began responding to voter wishes Dec. 9 as they reviewed 15 points that may be used in crafting the ordinance. In 2013, Wisconsin passed Act 20 which gave municipalities the ability to pass ordinance allowing the operation
of golf carts on any road with a speed limit of 25 mph or less located within the municipality. The referendum passed Nov. 4, 655 to 409. According to Village Administrator Tim Popanda at the Committee of the Whole meeting, all village roads meet that criterion. The village board intends to pass an ordinance that will allow residents and visitors to the village to use the golf carts safely, but also address reckless use. The first item on the pre-

Thank you for being there for us This week we celebrate our 600th newspaper column with all of you. We never thought so much would transpire from the idea of writing a weekly column sharing with all of you the need for poverty assistance in our beautiful communities. No one understood when I told them about the hundreds of hungry and homeless people in our midst. So many of our fellow creations suffered in silence, hidden from view, hungry, cold and ashamed. We together changed that forever. We opened our friends and neighbors eyes to the plight of our fellow Americans. We together opened the doors of the apartments, houses, trailers, cars and motel rooms for all of us to see the suffering. We shared together the needs of so many senior citizens, the handicapped, children and working poor families. We together cried tears of sadness over the suffering and tears of happiness when we were able to lift up our fellow creations in need and bring about a positive change. Thank you for all your years of support of our good works. Thank you for reading our column each week and sharing a part of what we do each day at The Time Is Now to Help. Dear Friends, Here are some excerpts from letters from those that desperately need our help. There are so many that I am sharing more than one so you can feel what I am encountering. Dear W.C.,
By
SAL DIMICELI Columnist
Can you please help my daughter? She has had a very tough time lately. Last year her husband was killed in a car accident when he was struck by a drunken driver. My daughter was left fivemonths pregnant and with a toddler to care for. She had to give up her job when she was having some problems in her pregnancy. She was not able to make it to full term due to the amount of stress and grief she was going through. She had to give up her apartment and move in with me in my one bedroom apartment. It is very cramped and I have been notified by the management that she has to move out or I will be evicted. My new grandson has had some health problems so my daughter is really struggling to get back and forth to Children’s Hospital. Can you please find it in your heart to help my daughter get back on her feet so she can care for her children on her own? Dear W.C., I am a single mother working for only $7.90 an hour. I am behind in my rent and utilities due to my son needing glasses and a dentist visit. He was crying from the pain so I had to take him to the dentist. It turned out he had a bad cavity. I could not believe how much it cost me to have this
filling done. My son also was having a hard time seeing and getting headaches in school. It turns out he needed glasses. That expense was as shocking as the dentist bill but how could I not get my son the help he needed? Dear W.C., I am an 81-year-old widow having a hard time due to the costs of propane. I need to have my propane tank filled but cannot afford to have it done. I worry every day that I will run out. On top of that food costs are so high. I live very frugally and am still able to do most of the chores around my trailer myself but this time I am really worried. Dear W.C. My neighbor is widowed and in his 80s. He needs assistance. We can’t afford to help him due to our own financial struggles with two children, one with special needs. I found my neighbor the other day crying over his inability to pay his bills. I tried to ask him why he was crying but he was too proud to tell me. I know he is having a hard time because my wife often offers to go over to his small house and do a little cleaning or drop off a plate of food. She told me he has nothing in his refrigerator or cabinets. This has us worried as we too live very cautiously but we have family to help if there was an emergency. I know he has no family or friends other than us. Dear W.C., I am a single mother with a disabled son. I have had
to struggle to get him special assistance. I am not able to work as I care for him around the clock. Due to unexpected car repairs I find myself unable to pay my bills this month. Can you please visit us and you will see for yourself the dilemma we are in. Dear W.C., My husband and I have been married for 58 years. My husband has suffered a heart attack and two strokes. We have found ourselves in desperate need of help. We needed help six months ago but I was too embarrassed to ask. I was too proud to apply for the assistance we so desperately need. Now I am not able to pay all our bills. Utilities, rent, telephone ... it is all too much for us now. My husband struggles to learn how to speak and walk again while I struggle to pay our bills. Dear Readers, I received this phone call tonight. “I have advanced Macular Degeneration. I can barely see. I desperately need assistance with my food and utilities. Life is very confusing when you have no one to help. I am all alone and it is very frightening. I can no longer write out checks or pay bills online as my center vision is nearly gone. My dear friends, we are working very hard to get through the many requests for those that are suffering. I will report to you in a future column some of the details of those that we have helped to remove the pains of poverty and improve their lives. This is what our mission
of caring and sharing and loving one another is all about. Those of you that answered our plea for financial assistance in our last column, I want to let you know that every dollar you donated is relieving the pains of poverty for our fellow creations. Please, please let us stand strong together so we may continue our good works of caring for one another. God bless everyone, W.C./Sal

• Golf carts
(Continued from page 3)
Golf cart drivers will need to adhere to all the rules of the road. Multiple golf carts traveling together would need to ride single file and operate on the extreme right of the roadway, but not in bike/walking lanes or on sidewalks.
Because of state law, use on highways 50 and K will largely be prohibited. Drivers can cross from one village road to another, but crossing points will be specified. Since both 248th and 236th Avenues are main thoroughfares,
golf carts would be allowed to travel only a short distance to anther village road or to cross over. The actual route has not yet been determined. Drivers will be required to carry liability insurance, have working head and tail-
lights that would be required to be on at all times and a slow-moving vehicle placard. Trustees Kathy Christenson and Barb Brenner expressed concern about seat belts and child car seats in the golf carts. Captain Kenneth
Weyker from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department explained that since golf carts are not cars, those laws do not apply to golf carts. Other residents in the audience pointed out that there are no golf cart incidences that point to the
need for such. Burns said the board hopes to have the ordinance complete by June and plans to continue working with ordinances from other communities and Paddock Lake residents to craft the final ordinance.

Lake County sheriff issues scam alert Lake County residents are warned to look out for several scams this holiday season. The most common scam this time of year is the IRS scam, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Victims receive a call from person who identifies him or herself as an agent of the IRS. The caller will claim the victim owes the IRS back taxes and then direct the victim to purchase cash cards or “money packs.” The fake agent will then empty the card and the money will be gone in seconds. Another common scam, according to the Sheriff’s Office, involves a call from a purported attorney in the foreign country claiming to represent a relative who needs money in order to be released from jail. Officials advise recipients of these calls to hang up and call the relative that is supposed to be in trouble before paying anyone on the telephone. These scams are conducted by sophisticated organized criminal organizations and are near-
ly impossible to track, a sheriff’s official said. Once the money is gone there is no chance that any prosecution will take place or that the money will be recovered. Most of these scams originate in foreign countries. These are just two examples of the numerous scams that have taken place in Lake County over the last 12 months, according to the Sheriff’s Office. If anyone calls claiming to need any form of payment via cash card, bank account or credit card information, residents are encouraged by officials to hang up and notify local police. Remember that the IRS or any legitimate Police Agency will not ask for payment on the phone via cash cards, credit card or bank account information. In addition to the phone scams there have been a number of scams that have been perSUBMITTED PHOTO Hi-Liter petrated through the U.S. Mail. Sheriff to crack down on drunken drivers
• Transport
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force from Dec. 20 through Jan. 5 as part of the annual holiday “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunk drivers. The statewide initiative will include high-visibility alcohol and seat belt enforcement throughout Lake County. The statewide crackdown will also be supported by national and state paid advertising, in an attempt to create a comprehensive campaign to curb drunk driving during the holiday season. Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies will be aggressively looking for drunken drivers during the crackdown. In addition, front and back
seat belt law violators will be ticketed. “You’ll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period and if we suspect anyone is driving while intoxicated, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk driving,” Sheriff Mark Curran Jr. said According to officials, data shows the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the increased number of drunk drivers on the roads. “The December holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, and we are going to keep our roads safe for travelers heading to visit friends and family,” Curran said. “This holiday, we will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road. Intersection gets new pavement The intersection of Highway 83 and Rollins Road in Antioch reopened with new pavement Dec. 18. In the upcoming weeks, there will be a few other related activities affecting motorists. The contractor will continue building retaining walls south of Rollins
Road, both on the west side of Highway 83 and in the ponds east of Hainesville Road. The latter wall is there to provide a safe maintenance corridor to the underground and overhead utilities that run between the new retention ponds there.

Paddock Lake wants change to transmission line route While the American Transmission Company may have settled for a proper route for its new power line, Paddock Lake wants to see more changes made. ATC has worked with municipalities in this region since 2012 to develop a route for a 25-mile, 138-kilovolt transmission line, a new substation, and other area system improvements. The project, called the Spring Valley-North Lake Geneva Project, is considered essential to improving electrical system reliability in the area. Paddock Lake and Salem worked together to develop a route that satisfied both
municipalities while allowing for the project to move forward. ATC accepted the changes requested by Salem, Village Administrator Tim Popanda explained at the Dec. 9 Committee of the Whole meeting, but didn’t change a thing in Paddock Lake. Popanda told the board that he has registered a challenge to ATC and reiterated the route changes requested earlier. “The problem is that the route proposed by ATC would hinder planned commercial and residential development that is planned for the area,” he said. The current route through Paddock Lake would run

up to Highway 50,” Popanda explained, Village engineers Baxter & Woodman have prepared the alternate route, and the documentation is available at the village hall for viewing. The ATC is required to present two proposed routes for the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to review when the application of the project is filed by ATC is
spring of 2015. To view the ATC proposed routes, visit www.atc-projects.com and click on the button for the Spring Valley-North Lake Geneva Project. Project manager Mary Carpenter, the senior local relations representative, can be reached through email at mcarpenter@atcllc.com or by telephone at (252) 5056922. The Paddock Lake Vil-
lage Hall telephone number is (262) 842-2713. Similar lines are already in place along State Highway 45 between Union Grove and Franklin. The other line runs east then north across country out of the Paris substation. There are three places to see that line – where it crosses County D (172nd Avenue south of KR (1st Street) or KR east of D or crossing at Highway 11.

Sheriff to Santa, crack down is it really on drunken you? drivers The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force from Dec. In addition, front and back seat belt law violators will be ticketed. “You’ll see us making lots of stops during this highly visible enforcement period and if we suspect anyone is driving while intoxicated, officers will show zero tolerance for drunk driving,” Sheriff Mark Curran Jr. said According to officials, data shows the holiday season is a particularly deadly time due to the in-
creased number of drunk drivers on the roads. “The December holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, and we are going to keep our roads safe for travelers heading to visit friends and family,” Curran said. “This holiday, we will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road. If you choose to drive drunk, we will see you, we will stop you and you will be arrested.” Curran said drunken drivers face jail time, loss of their driver licenses, and steep financial consequences such as higher insurance rates, attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators also often face tremendous personal embarrassment. “Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk. So don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching,” Curran said. The crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

These scams are conducted by sophisticated orga-

In this show, he uses black lights, special effects and the magic of 3D and even 4D. • American English, The Complete Beatles Tribute on Saturday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. Performing songs covering the entire career of The Beatles from 1963-1970, and with precise attention to every musical detail, along with costume changes, vintage instruments and special effects, American English is the closest you will ever get to reliving The Beatles. • The Second City Hits Home: Friday, April 10, at 8 p.m. Chicago’s famous comedy troupe serves up comedic twists on today’s headlines to keep audiences giggling. • I’ve Got A Little Twist: Saturday, May 9, at 8 p.m. in Studio Theatre. Reading program to benefit charity First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children from low-income families, is the 2015 beneficiary of Lake Villa District Library’s winter reading programs. It’s become a tradition at the library for the winter reading program to benefit a charitable organization. Every hour that participants read translates to $1 donation. In addition, program participants can
earn up to $5 that will be donated directly to First Book. All donations are funded by the Friends of Lake Villa District Library. The library offers winter reading programs for people of all ages – children, teens and adults. Reading logs will be available at the youth and adult reference desks beginning Jan. 2. The library is at 1001 E. Grand Ave., Lake Villa.
Rangers donate clothing to vets Rangers from the Lake County Forest Preserves recently reached out to veterans in need by donating an assortment of uniform jackets, shirts and pants that were no longer in use. The donation was coordinated with the Waukegan-based Lake County Veterans Assistance Commission.
The clothing will be distributed out of the Midwest Veterans Closet shop in North Chicago, where veterans shop for free. The collection was comprised from a combination of uniforms in discontinued styles and returned by rangers when they left the force. All identification patches were removed prior to donating.
