Gloria (played by Lindsey Yates Badtke) cozies up to Robert (Terry O’Brien) in this scene from a recent rehearsal of the comedy “Boeing-Boeing.” Antioch’s PM&L Theatre will present the play on weekends from April 10 through 26.

Recent earthquake was felt in area

‘Boeing-Boeing’ to make landing at PM&L PM&L Theatre will present “Boeing-Boeing” by Marc Camoletti April 10 through 26. The show is set in the swinging 1960s, and bachelor Bernard (played by Dean J. Griffiths) couldn’t be happier. He has a flat in Paris, a housekeeper that came with the place (Delores “Dee” Finley) and three gorgeous, international airline hostesses (Lindsey Yates-Badtke, Jessica Augustine, and Rebecca Zellar) all engaged to him

without knowing about each other. But Bernard’s perfect life – “one up, one down, and one pending” – gets bumpy when his friend Robert (Terry O’Brien) comes to stay and a new, speedier Boeing jet throws off all of his careful planning. Soon, all three stewardesses are in town simultaneously, and catastrophe looms. Deane Jones directs this comedic farce, which received the 2008 Tony

munity Building, 884 Main Street, on April 25. Tickets are considered reserved once payment is made. Besides samples of beer and BBQ, participants will also receive a keepsake beer mug, a coupon for a complimentary six-pack and a bag to carry any extras collected during the event. All participants will be entered into a drawing for one of five Antioch Chamber of Commerce gift certificates. Ticket proceeds benefit Antioch’s holiday programs. For more information, contact the Antioch Chamber at (847) 395-2233.

Award for Best Revival of a Play. Performance dates for Boeing-Boeing are Fridays and Saturdays, April 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, and 25 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, April 12, 19, and 26 at 2:30 pm. Visit www.pmltheatre.com for tickets, show announcements, news, and more about the theater’s season. PM&L is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization in Antioch.

Lake County recently experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 that residents described as a loud bang or rumbling that lasted a few seconds. Emergency government officials want residents to know what to do during an earthquake: Drop to the floor; take cover; and hold on to the piece furniture, like a table. For more information on earthquake preparedness, visit www.illinois.gov/ready/SiteCollectionDocuments/ EarthquakePreparednessGuide.pdf.

Woman killed in attack at hospital Her estranged husband is charged with murder

By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER

A 42-year-old woman is dead following what authorities believe was a domestic violence attack in an Elk Grove Village, Ill., hospital March 22. Francisca Quintero-Montoya of Burlington, Wis., was visiting her ailing brother at Alexian Brothers Medical Center Sunday morning when she was allegedly stabbed to death by her estranged husband. She was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver, and died a short time later. Her husband, Javier Bahena-Arellano, a McHenry, Ill., resident, was immediately taken into custody.

The Cook County States Attorney’s office charged him with one count of first-degree murder and one count of felony murder. He is being held without bond. A vigil for Quintero-MonJavier Bahena- toya was Arellano March 25 in Wehmhoff Square Park in Burlington. Cherie Griffin, the executive director for the Women’s Resource Center, said trauma advocates from the group will be available on request. Griffin said she felt a pro-

found sadness upon hearing the news. “This is why I do the work I do,” Griffin said. “We are working to protect victims and save their lives.” According to information released at a press conference by Assistant States Attorney Maria McCarthy Monday, the autopsy done by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office revealed three wounds, including one that perforated the aorta, the main artery in the body. Reading from a report, McCarthy said Bahena-Arellano believed his wife was having an affair. He allegedly took her cell phone and went out to his truck, where he read her text messages.

He then came back into the hospital with a screwdriver. McCarthy said Bahena-Arellano allegedly gave the keys to his truck to his brother-in-law, asking him to return it to his place of work. When asked why, the defendant allegedly said, “no, it’s finished” and he wouldn’t need the truck. McCarthy said Bahena-Arellano then confronted Quintero-Montoya and followed her into a bathroom off the waiting room area. Family members heard a commotion, but couldn’t get into the locked bathroom. “They heard the defendant say to the victim, ‘I told you what I was doing to do to you.’”

McCarthy added that family members then heard Quintero-Montoya pleading with her husband. A short time later, she said, they broke down the door, and found Quintero-Montoya on the floor covered with blood. According to McCarthy, when Bahena-Arellano was asked, “Why?” by a sister, he picked up the cell phone and said, “This is your motive why.” He also allegedly told security personnel that his wife had cheated on him. Village of Elk Grove Police Sgt. Michael Garrison confirmed there had been previous domestic violence complaints regarding Bahena-Arellano, but said they

occurred “years ago.” Griffin said she could not comment on whether the Women’s Resource Center had previous dealings with Quintero-Montoya, but added that outcomes like this are what the women’s advocates at the center fear. “A situation like this is the most risk,” Griffin said. “This is where domestic violence becomes lethal.” She said domestic violence, if left alone, escalates. “This reminds us of taking the threats of a batterer seriously,” Griffin said. She urged any women in a domestic violence situation thinking of leaving to seek help so they could do so safely.

Fugitive manhunt ends violently Suspect shoots himself, dies after 24 hours on the run

By Patricia Bogumil STAFF WRITER

A manhunt for a fugitive whom police described as armed and dangerous ended March 23 in Mount Pleasant some 24 hours after it began – but it did not end peacefully. The manhunt that began March 22 canceled school for students in Union Grove and Yo r k v i l l e , and led police to a d v i s e Stantavious residents to Sillas stay indoors to be safe. The fugitive, Stantavious Sillas, 20, was captured after citizen tips led investigators to a home near the 5300 block of Taylor Avenue in Mount Pleasant, according to a posting on the Racine County Facebook page. Arriving officers tracked fresh footwear impressions in the snow, which led them to Sillas at around 1:30 p.m. He was hiding in some evergreen trees situated on private property adjacent to the roadway, said Mount Pleasant Police Chief Chief Tim Zarzecki. Two Racine city officers and one Mount

Pleasant officer were on scene. “They tried to order him out, but he decided to take his own life,” Zarzecki said. Sillas reportedly threatened to shoot himself with a handgun he had in his possession when he saw the police arriving, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Officers attempted crisis intervention measures to prevent Sillas from harming himself, but their efforts failed. Sillas shot himself once in the head, according to Sgt. Eric Relich of the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Sillas was then rushed to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital and later transported to Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Wauwatosa. Sillas died around 6 p.m. Monday at Froedtert from his gunshot wound, said Relich. Sillas was being sought by police after kidnapping a woman acquaintance March 22 from the parking lot of Lakeview NeuroRehabilitation Center near Waterford, then later firing his gun at sheriff’s deputies searching for him in the Piggly Wiggly shopping center in Union Grove. After the parking lot

Business was bustling again March 23 at the Piggly Wiggly shopping in Union Grove, where a day earlier an armed fugitive shot at law enforcement officers attempting to apprehend him.

shooting, police rescued the woman, whom they reported was unharmed, and they again began hunting for Sillas, combing buildings, backyards, fields and other potential hiding places throughout the Union Grove/ Mount Pleasant area. No shots were fired by law enforcement during the

incident and no officers, residents or other citizens were injured during the course of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office reported. “We’re glad it came to an end in which no law enforcement officers or citizens were hurt. We’re grateful for that,” Zarzecki said.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigation was contacted to handle the investigation because the investigation had involved three police agencies, according to Relich. The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted with the investigation as well.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling expressed his gratitude to the public for their assistance providing tips that led to Sillas’s apprehension. He called the incident “a fine example of law enforcement working together with one common goal: public safety.”

The time is now to help

Mother who cares for son struggles with her health Dear W.C., A coworker of mine is in desperate need of your assistance. She has been having some health problems and cares for her son with special needs. You have met her before when she referred several senior citizens to The Time Is Now to Help. She met you at their apartments when you did your home checks. She is such a good person, she is a hard worker and would not ask for this assistance on her own. She had to cut her hours drastically due to her illness, so she fell behind. I know she is behind in her rent and in need of several car repairs. She does not complain, but I can see how stressed out she is and noticed how little food she has. Dear readers, When I opened this letter, I knew who the woman in need was immediately. She had brought several senior citizens who were living in severe poverty to our attention a few years ago. I remember her caring about these seniors and her concern for their wellbeing. She made sure The Time Is Now to Help had all the information we needed to provide them with our assistance. She went out of her way to make sure these seniors not only received rental assistance but also received beds, bed linens and food. Now it was her turn to receive our caring and sharing assistance. I called the woman in need and she answered with, “Sal! How are you? How is everyone at Time is Now? I haven’t spoken to you in ages.” After we

County plans a busy roadwork season The Lake County Division of Transportation is planning $137 million in road projects this coming construction season. While about $60 million of that is carried over from projects that were started last year, there will be about $77 million in new projects, which are expected to be awarded during the first six months of 2015, according to county officials. The plan includes 24 projects, 11 of which contain non-motorized travel improvements, such as bike paths, or adding bike friendly lanes. “The 2015 construction program highlights the County Board’s commitment to relieving traffic gridlock while, at the same time, aligning transportation projects with

economic development priorities,” Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said. “A safe and efficient transportation system not only contributes to a high quality of life for the residents of Lake County, but also helps move goods and services through the county for our businesses and allows people to get to their jobs,” he continued. Two significant expansion projects include the Peterson Road Corridor and the Washington Street thoroughfare projects. In addition to expanding roads to add capacity, officials said Lake County is investing in preserving roads through resurfacing. The 2015 program includes several resurfacing projects, such as portions of

Lewis Avenue in Waukegan and North Chicago, Center Street in Grayslake, Quentin Road in Deer Park and others around the county. Lake County is also modernizing the system by expanding the PASSAGE network. Lake County PASSAGE is an Intelligent Transportation System designed to provide motorists real-time traffic and congestion information. Technology improves travel times for motorists with the installation of new cameras, fiber optic cables, wireless links and traffic signal controllers. Bonnie Thomson Carter, Public Works and Transportation Committee Chairman explained, “There are more than 500 intersections currently online and connected to the

PASSAGE system and that number continues to grow. PASSAGE also provides the ability to change signal timings to help alleviate congestion and assist emergency responders, and uses cameras to monitor traffic situations.” Here’s a brief look at some of the county’s construction projects for 2015:

Peterson Road Corridor The widening of the Peterson Road corridor is moving forward. The first part of the project to widen Peterson Road to five lanes from US 45 to west of Route 83 is 80 percent complete. Construction to widen Peterson Road from Route 83 to Alleghany Road is expected to begin in the first half of 2015 and be complete

by the end of 2016.

Washington Street thoroughfare Construction on the remaining sections of the Washington Street Thoroughfare project will begin this year. Part of this project includes lowering Washington Street and installing a bridge to carry the CN/Metra railroad tracks over the roadway. The roadway will also be reconstructed and widened to five lanes and includes the installation of concrete walls, ornamental fencing, sidewalk, bike path, a storm water pump station, and JAWA water main relocation. During construction, traffic on Washington Street will be traveling on a temporary bypass roadway.

Other projects to be completed in 2015: • Lake County’s fifth roundabout at the intersection of River Road and Roberts Road in Lake Barrington • Bike path along Washington Street from Atkinson Road to Lancer Lane in Grayslake • Realignment of the North Shore Bike Path with new crossing gates at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing just east of US Route 41 in Lake Bluff • Rollins Road Gateway project in Round Lake Beach at the intersection of Rollins Road and IL Route 83 • Wadsworth Road and Route 131 intersection reconstruction and widening

Residents may comment on trimming government Lake County officials recently submitted ideas to the state task force on streamlining local governments. Lake County’s list included mandates that, if removed, could save Lake County more than $2 million annually. Residents may now submit their ideas on ways to consolidate, streamline or eliminate duplicative governmental bodies, school districts and taxing authorities, and ideas on ways to replace, revise or repeal unfunded mandates

placed on local governments and school districts. Comments may be submitted online at www.illinois.gov/ltg/issues/localgovernments/Pages/default.aspx. The ideas will be compiled and reported to the Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force, and a summary of public comments will be included in the task force’s final report to the governor and General Assembly.

14-year-old born with heart defect pursues cardiology profession By Dave Fidlin

M

CORRESPONDENT

iKayla Person believes in miracles. After four heart surgeries and a serious birth defect that could have claimed her life, the 14-year-old Delavan student has a perspective on life that points to the age-old notion of living each day to its fullest. While most high school freshmen are still jostling around career prospects, Person already has a firm grasp of what she wants to pursue in college after she graduates from Delavan-Darien High School in 2018. “I’m really looking to get into cardiology,” said Person, who shadowed Andrew Pelech, a doctor who specializes in pediatrics and cardiology at Wauwatosabased Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, on March 6. For Person, the career exploration hits close to home. She was born with pulmonary valve atresia, a condition denoting the absence of a pulmonary artery, which is used to transport deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. Additionally, Person was eventually

diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect because of a hole that was located on the back of her heart. While Person was born with both conditions, neither were discovered until she was 1 ½ years old. It was the expertise of Children’s staff, including Pelech, that got to the root of Person’s wheezing as a baby. Person, who still visits Children’s routinely as a patient, is otherwise able to lead a normal life — a reality that perhaps is best demonstrated by the fact she has been involved in three sports since fourth grade. As she roamed the various wings with Pelech inside Children’s earlier this month, Person was inquisitive and fielded a number of questions at someone she considers a mentor. Person’s maturity and matter-of-fact questioning were reminiscent of a person already enrolled in college. “When I began talking at 3 years old, I had to be able to communicate to adults and doctors clearly so I could articulate how I was feeling,” said Person, who has lived in Delavan since birth with mom, Shawna Person, and grandma, Kay Person. Some of the stops during the shadow day included a visit to a catheterization

laboratory — more commonly nicknamed a “cath lab.” The temperature-sensitive examination room features a number of pieces of highly specialized equipment. Technology has advanced to the point the equipment can pinpoint a person’s blood pressure in up to five different areas of his or her body. One of the most riveting moments of the tour through Children’s different crevasses was a stop outside the patients’ rooms. Because of the complexity of many of the surgeries, parents frequently create makeshift living quarters. “You’re dealing with patients and their parents during their most trying circumstances,” Pelech said. “It’s very challenging but very rewarding.” Pelech, who admits he is constantly learning on the job, said, “I see a miracle here every week.” While Pelech and Person have built a rapport through Person’s assorted surgeries, their encounter early this month was for a different, more pleasant reason. Pelech espoused his knowledge and insight into the field of pediatric cardiology. “For me, treating kids is so much more

satisfying that working with adults,” Pelech said. “The children I’m treating haven’t done anything wrong. They’re dealing with something that has just fallen upon them.” Stories such as Person’s have grabbed the attention of state lawmakers — a point Pelech proclaimed during the job shadowing exercise. When Person was born, hospitals were not required to test a baby’s oxygen levels. The law has since changed so rare conditions that are not easily detectible can be addressed promptly. As Pelech discussed his profession, it became clear Person’s life story will go down as a career highlight. “We’re hoping the fourth (heart surgery) will be her last,” Pelech said. “She’s been through so much, and she’s been a star. She’s lived a very normal life and has gone on to excel in a number of areas.” Person, who has overcome obstacles in her near decade and a half of life, has a bright future ahead. By Pelech’s estimation, the groundwork for her career-in-themaking has already been built because of her perseverance through surgeries. “I think she’s gained a world of experience already,” he said.

Teen credits God for health miracles Student provides AED at school By Dave Fidlin

CORRESPONDENT

While MiKayla Person is quick to credit medical professionals for her upbeat, health-filled future, she said another facet of her life – her faith – gave her the strength to persevere through some of life’s most challenging moments. “We’ve all had faith in God,” Person said, including her mom, Shawna Person, and grandma, Kay Person, in the reference. “We believe He pulled us through this.” The Delavan area faith community has been a frequent wellspring for the Person family. Until last fall, Person attended the K-8 parochial Delavan Christian School, where Person said love and support was overflowing. While Person has since advanced to Delavan-Darien High School, her former stomping grounds remain close to her heart. Before leaving the school last year, she fought steadfast to have an automated external defibrillator installed at the school. Person is on the path to overcoming her once undetected heart defects, other youth and young adults have succumbed to similar conditions. One such person is Adam Lemel of Whitefish Bay, who collapsed while playing basketball in 1999 at the age of 17.

God gives miracles to those who believe, courage to those with faith, hope to those who dream, and love to those who accept.”

– unknown

VICKY WEDIG Hi-Liter

MiKayla Person shows the scar from heart surgeries that began when she was 18 months old after doctors discovered she was born without a pulmonary artery.

Through state funding, Gov. Scott Walker provided all public schools with an AED. Private and parochial schools, however, were not included.

From Person’s vantage point, the campaign to bring an AED to Delavan Christian School was a simple way of giving back. The AED was one of

several life-saving tools and techniques used recently when a local boy collapsed at Delavan Christian School while playing basketball and enduring a seizure. The boy

eventually was transported to Madison to undergo a procedure involving brain surgery. As she looks to her future, Person has a new perspective

and is gleeful about the road ahead. “I know God has big plans for me,” she said. “I’m open to doing anything I can to spread His love around.”

Slices of Life

Life’s truths – part 1 The older I get, the more I know that I didn’t know what I thought I used to know back when I knew it all. As humbling as it is to not be the know-it-all I once thought I was, I have acquired bits of information and logic along the way that can be loosely characterized as knowledge. I call these snippets of wisdom life’s truths. They are simple and basic scraps of insight that, once aligned, seem obvious – like 600 thread count tops 300 and you can never find a workable pen when you need it most. These truths can be camouflaged in plain sight

By

JILL PERTLER Columnist

and go unnoticed until lived and learned, often the hard way. My list grew to the point that it no longer fit into one tidy article. This is the first installment of a two-part column, which will conclude next week. Life’s truths: They can be funny, philosophical, practical and poignant. The one thing they have in common is an underlying validity. I’ll bet you can to add a few of your own. There is a difference between being smart and being wise. Both are good. Going 30 miles per hour on

REAL ESTATE

a residential road feels much slower right after you have exited the freeway. Dogs are more work than cats. Thinking to yourself, “I don’t need to write my superb idea down, I’ll remember it later,” hardly ever works. Your cat likes you, but only at certain times of the day. Your dog loves you. Period. An old photo always looks better once it is old. Every human being is a human being – with worries, wants, woes and a wish for happiness. The grass may look greener on the other side of the fence, but it probably isn’t. We all want to be normal. Hardly any of us believe we are. Garrison Keillor was on the right track: we all think we are

above average. However, each of us considers our children way, way above average. You can be a fan of chunky or creamy, but not of both. When you are having a bad day, sometimes the best thing to do is something nice for someone else. Adult cats do not meow at each other. They may hiss or even growl, but they reserve their meows for communicating with humans. Kittens will meow at their mothers and vice versa. A good marriage is often hard work. But it is worth it. Raising a family is often hard work. But it is worth it. Just about anything that’s worth anything is hard work. But it is worth it. Nearly everyone can appreciate the value of a comfy quilt on a rainy Saturday.

Miserable people make other people miserable. Words are powerful. Think twice before you speak, three times before you write and four times before you hit send. Taste buds regenerate every 10 to 14 days. Just because you didn’t like broccoli two weeks ago doesn’t mean you won’t like it today. Everyone, at some time, thinks, “Is this all there is?” When in doubt, listen. The majority of us carry one of our most important and valued possessions in our pocket. Those who don’t carry it in their purses, and I’m not talking about a fluffy white dog. A smartphone can’t love you back. The difference between sour cream and yogurt is sour cream is made with cream

and yogurt is made with milk. Greek yogurt is regular yogurt with more of the liquid whey removed. Pondering what you should have said is a waste of time. We all want to be wanted. Someone wise (and intelligent) once told me you can change a lot of things in life, but you can’t change the truth. They were right. I believe these life’s truths are limitless – as vast and infinite as knowledge itself. I’m willing to bet that’s the truth. I’ll see you back here next week. County plans busy roadwork season The Lake County Division of Transportation is planning $137 million in road projects this coming construction season. “The 2015 construction program highlights the County Board’s commitment to relieving traffic gridlock while, at the same time, aligning transportation projects with economic development priorities,” Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor said. “A safe and efficient transportation system not only contributes to a high quality of life for the residents of Lake County, but also helps move goods and services through the county for our businesses and allows people to get to their jobs,” he continued. Two significant expansion projects include the Peterson Road Corridor and the Washington Street thoroughfare

Gloria (played by Lindsey Yates Badtke) cozies up to Robert (Terry O’Brien) in this scene from a recent rehearsal of the comedy “Boeing-Boeing.” Antioch’s PM&L Theatre will present the play on weekends from April 10 through 26.

PM&L is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization in Antioch.

projects. In addition to expanding roads to add capacity, officials said Lake County is investing in preserving roads through resurfacing. The 2015 program includes several resurfacing projects, such as portions of Lewis Avenue in Waukegan and North Chicago, Center Street in Grayslake, Quentin Road in Deer Park and others around the county. Bonnie Thomson Carter, Public Works and Transportation Committee Chairman explained, “There are more than 500 intersections currently online and connected to the PASSAGE system and that number continues to grow. PASSAGE also provides the ability to change signal timings to help alleviate conges-

Sheriff’s seminar aims to keep kids safe online The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will present a seminar titled “Technology and Pornography: Keeping Youth Safe” on Friday, April 24, from 8 a.m. to noon. The seminar will be held at the College of Lake County, Auditorium C-005, 19351 W. Washington Street, Grayslake. The seminar will help ed-

ucate and empower parents and professionals working with youth. The forum features the following guest speakers: • Dr. Mary Anne Layden, Director of Education, Center for Cognitive Therapy, University of Pennsylvania; • Liz Yore, former Special Counsel for Harpo Studios and former General Counsel

at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; • Det. Chris Covelli, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Cyber-Crimes Task Force For more information, call Antonietta Simonian at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, (847) 377-4174, or by email at asimonian@ lakecountyil.gov.

Residents may comment on trimming government Lake County officials recently submitted ideas to the state task force on streamlining local governments. Lake County’s list included mandates that, if removed, could save Lake County more than $2 million annually. Residents may now submit their ideas on ways to consolidate, streamline or eliminate duplicative governmental bodies, school districts and taxing authorities, and ideas on ways to replace, revise or repeal unfunded

mandates placed on local governments and school districts.

There’s no place like SpringFest

Dorothy takes time out during her trip from Kansas to the Land of Oz to give 3-year-old twins Madison (left) and MacKenzie Twadell, a few lessons on the proper way to click ruby slippers exactly three times at the Lindenhurst-Lake Villa Chamber of Commerce SpringFest Expo at Lakes Community High School on Saturday. The annual weekend event featured more than 100 area businesses and encouraged residents to shop locally. Children had the opportunity to rub elbows with other characters from children’s books at the Princess Cabaret. The event also featured a facepainter, magician, and a stiltwalker as well as a children’s activity center.

The Lindenhurst Park District will celebrate Earth and Arbor Days from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Village Hall and public works facility, 2301 Sand Lake Road. Among the fun will be the Illinois Association of Park District’s annual statewide Kite Fly “Flying 4 Kids” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. People are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and a kite to this free event.

Recent earthquake was felt in area

Lake County recently experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 that residents described as a loud bang or rumbling that lasted a few seconds. Emergency government officials want residents to know what to do during an earthquake: Drop to the floor; take cover; and hold on to the piece furniture, like a table. For more information on

Bill would give county power to cut taxing bodies Legislation intended to give the McHenry County Board the power to reduce the number of local taxing bodies passed a committee vote recently. “The cause of Illinois’ extremely high property taxes is not a mystery,” said state Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Marengo, who sponsored the bill. “With nearly 7,000 units of government that can tax citizens, residents are funding thousands of unnecessary layers of bureaucracy.” House Bill 229 seeks to extend to McHenry County the authority to dissolve units of government located entirely within the county to which the County Board appoints a majority of the governing board. Currently, this authority is only vested in the DuPage County Board. Under the bill, the McHenry County Board would have the power to propose dissolution by ordinance, after which it would be required to publish the reasons for suggested changes and the proposal’s estimated cost savings, and then permit citizens 30 days

Gloria (played by Lindsey Yates Badtke) cozies up to Robert (Terry O’Brien) in this scene from a recent rehearsal of the comedy “Boeing-Boeing.” Antioch’s PM&L Theatre will present the play on weekends from April 10 through 26.

PM&L is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization in Antioch.

to initiate a binding, backdoor referendum in opposition to the plan. Franks was recently appointed to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s Local Government and Unfunded Mandate Task Force. He is also the sponsor of House Bill 228, which calls for a four-year moratorium on the General Assembly’s authority to create new units of local government. That measure passed the House on March 4 by a wide margin and awaits consideration in the Senate. In 2014, the Local Government Consolidation Commission, issued an extensive report recommending various measures to reduce the number of local taxing bodies in Illinois. In August, legislation expanding possible consolidation initiatives was signed into law. “The success enjoyed by DuPage County has been profound and is only beginning,” Franks said. “After years of bearing some of the highest property taxes in the country, McHenry County taxpayers deserve the same opportunities for relief.”

4-H teens to host Health Rocks day camp The McHenry County 4-H program will host a “Health Rocks” day camp for youth ages 5 to 8 this summer. Students do not need to be a member of 4-H to attend the day camp. The camp will be held from June 15 to 19, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day The camp is partially sponsored by a donation given through the McHenry County Community Foundation. The “Health Rocks” Day Camp will focus on making healthy food choices, growing healthy food and fun activities to promote exercise.

Register online at https:// web.extension.illinois. edu/registration/?RegistrationID=12163. The camp will be held at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, 11900 Country Club Road in Woodstock. Cost for the week is $30, which includes lunch, T-shirt, and activities. The cost is the same to participate a single day, multiple days or the week. Be sure to indicate what days your child will attend. Once registered, you will be required to submit an Acknowledgement of Risk Form, as well as a Health Form. These will be emailed

to you within a week of registration. For more information, contact Cindy Sarkady at (815) 338-3737. What is unique about the camp is that 4-H teens design and present the program along with adult support. According to organizers, youth-adult partnerships are shown to be an effective way to engage both in meaningful activities, which contribute to positive youth development. Youth involved in such programs have been shown to improve skills and competencies while decreasing participation in risky behaviors.
