JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Aubrey Maxson, 9, gives her mother, Carrie, a lesson in chalk art during this year’s Art Crawl in front of Hair Designs Unltd., 912 Main St., Antioch, on May 2. The Lake Villa pair took part in the annual event, which is sponsored by School District 34 and featured the artwork of area elementary school students. The drawings and paintings were displayed in the windows of merchants in Antioch’s business district. In addition to their artwork, youngsters also displayed their musical talents in the first concert of the season held at the Brook Bandshell throughout the day.

‘Assassins’ to take a shot at local theater PM&L Theatre will present the musical, “Assassins,” beginning May 29. The show will run for three weekends. “Assassins” combines Stephen Sondheim’s signature blend of lyrics and beautiful music, with a panoramic story (book by John Weidman) of our nature’s culture of celebrity and the violent means some will use to obtain it, embodied by America’s successful and would-be presidential assassins, including John Wilkes Booth and John Hinckley, Jr. Chuck Lindas directs the five-time Tony awardwinning musical, with the help of Casey Audrain as assistant director. The cast includes Kerry John Knowlton as the Balladeer, Bob Wang as Charles J. Guiteau, Nic Cicerale as John Wilkes Booth, Jeff Harding as the Proprietor, Jim Olson as Leon Czolgosz, Jefferson
Paris as John Hinckley, Jr., Mike Kavka as Giuseppe Zangara, John Carlson as Samuel Byck, Sherri Warren as Sara Jane Moore, and Rebecca Zellar as Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. The acting ensemble includes Garrett Christiansen, Alyssa Rittorno, Samantha Hawley, Chris Warren, Mark Audrain and Phillip Van Bussum. Performance dates for Assassins will be Fridays and Saturdays, May 29 and 30, June 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, May 31, June 7 and 14 at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 for adults and $13 for students and seniors. PM&L is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization in downtown Antioch. Visit www.pmltheatre. com for tickets, show announcements, news and more about the season. PM&L is also on Facebook and Twitter.

The Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center is encouraging county residents to take precautions against ticks, which can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Once considered a rare illness in Lake County, Lyme disease is becoming more common in the area. The average annual number of reported probable and confirmed cases of this disease increased steadily from 6.7 cases between 2003-2005 to 21.3 cases between 2012-2014. “As people go outside to enjoy warmer weather, they should remember to protect themselves and their families against ticks and Lyme disease,” said Mike Adam, a senior biologist at the Health Department. “It is anticipated that the harsh winter did not reduce the number of ticks, which are out in full force at this time of year. Deer ticks (sometimes called the black-legged tick) can carry Lyme disease, as well as other diseases such as anaplasmosis, bartonella, ehrlichia or babesiosis. They are about an eighth of an inch long as adults, and dark brown to bright red with black legs. Deer ticks were first documented in Lake County in 2006. Another kind of local tick is the American dog tick (sometimes called the wood tick). Dog ticks are one-quarter-inch long as adults, much smaller as juveniles, and are dark reddish brown with irregular silvery or cream-colored patterns on their backs. Additionally, the Lone Star tick, distinguished by a white dot, or star on its back, was documented for the first time last year in Lake County. Neither Lone Star nor dog ticks transmit Lyme disease. However, the dog tick can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and the Lone Star tick can transmit southern tick-associated rash illness, although no cases of these diseases have been reported in Lake County. Each year, the Health Department conducts environmental surveillance of ticks. In conjunction with North Park University and the Lake County Forest Preserve District, it collects and tests samples for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. To build awareness about the dangers associated with ticks, it is launching a “Fight
the Bite” educational campaign that includes billboard and bus sign advertisements. The Health Department is urging residents to protect themselves from exposure to ticks by following the guidelines. Tips for reducing tick habitat around your home: • Clear leaf litter under trees, and keep the ground clean under bird feeders. • Keep grass near playground equipment short. • Install a wood chip or gravel barrier between lawns and wooded and tall grass areas. Minimize wood piles as these are attractive to small mammals such as mice, which can carry ticks. Tips for reducing exposure to ticks: • Avoid tick habitat by staying on trails when in forest preserves and parks. • Wear light-colored, protective clothing, such as longsleeved shirts, long trousers, boots or sturdy shoes, and a head covering. Tuck trouser cuffs in socks and tuck in shirt tails. • Apply insect repellent containing DEET primarily to clothes. Apply repellent sparingly to exposed skin. Do not apply directly to the face. Be sure to wash treated skin after coming indoors. Use repellents containing permethrin to treat clothes (especially pants, socks and shoes), but not skin. Always follow label directions and supervise children in the use of repellents. • Walk in the center of trails so plants do not brush against you. • Check yourself, your children and other family members every two to three hours for ticks. • If your pets spend time outdoors, regularly check them for ticks, too. • Promptly remove any ticks to help prevent infection. To find and remove ticks: • Check the skin and clothing of anyone that has been in grassy areas for an extended period. • Pay extra attention to the neck, behind the ears and the groin. • Use fine-tipped tweezers or shield your fingers with a tissue when removing a tick. • Do not burn the tick with a match or cover it with petroleum jelly.
County’s largest job fair is May 21 Job seekers are invited to attend the 20th annual JobMarketPlace fair on May 21 sponsored by the College of Lake County Career and Job Placement Center. The fair will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. in the P.E. Center, Building 7, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake. This is Lake County’s largest job fair, where participants can explore full-time, part-time, seasonal and professional job opportunities with dozens of employers in a variety of industries, including hospitality, health care, child care, employment agencies, manufacturing and retail. The event is free to everyone, and there is no need to register. All candidates should dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes to distribute to employers.
Also on May 21, an employer panel discussion is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon in Rooms E124 and E125 of the E Building, located east of the P.E. Center. A panel of human resource professionals from companies such as ABF Freight, Fleet and Family Readiness-Naval Base, Key Lime Cove, Lake County Health Department, Manpower, Sysmex, Village of Round Lake Beach, Volkswagen Credit and Walgreens will offer insights on their hiring practices and give tips on resumes, interviews and effective follow-up. No reservation is required, but seating is limited. More information is available by calling (847) 543-2059 or visiting www. clcillinois.edu/cps and clicking on JobMarketPlace.

Ducks out of water
Vicki Mandurano and Mike Mackey of the Ducks Unlimited Chain O’Lakes Chapter sort out piles of refuse collected during the 14th Annual Fox River-Chain O’Lakes Cleanup station at the Charles Haling & Sons Resort, 26365 W. Lotus Rd., Antioch, on Saturday. The two volunteers were among many who retrieved bottles, cans, tires, and other assorted flotsam and jetsam from area waterways in an attempt to make them cleaner and safer for all who use those natural resources. The event was sponsored by the Fox Waterway Agency. A grant for the cleanup event was provided by the Illinois EPA Streambank Cleanup And Lakeshore Enhancement program, which assists groups that have established a recurring stream or lakeshore cleanup.
• Grasp the tick close to the skin surface and pull upward with slow, even pressure. • Do not twist or pull the tick quickly; this causes the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. • Do not squeeze the tick’s body. • Once the tick is removed, disinfect the bite site and wash your hands with soap and water. • Make a note of the date you removed the tick and save it for identification in case you become ill. Place the tick in a plastic bag and put it in your freezer. In order to transmit illness, a deer tick must be attached to the skin for at least 24 hours. Symptoms of Lyme disease may include “bull’s-eye” rashes or lesions around the site of the bite (generally seven to 14 days after the tick has consumed a blood meal) accompanied by fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and/or joint aches. If you experience any of the signs or symptoms seven days or more following a known tick bite, you should consult your physician. For more information, visit www.fightthebitenow.com.

Pedestrian dies after he’s hit by motorcycle A 66-year-old McHenry man was killed May 7 when struck by a motorcycle along Ringwood Road in unincorporated McHenry. Thomas R. King was pronounced dead at the scene after the motorcycle struck him in the roadway at 8:41 p.m. in the 3900 block of Ringwood Road, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on Ringwood Road when it struck King. The driver of the Harley Davidson, Michael Polanzi, 62, and passenger, Krystal L. Hyde, 28, were transported by ambulance to Centegra Hospital McHenry. After an autopsy, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office has determined that King died from multiple blunt force injuries to the chest, abdomen and pelvis. At the time of this release no citations had been issued. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of the McHenry Fire Protection District also assisted at the scene.

Local food inspection reports now online Area residents now have access to recent restaurant inspection reports through an online service offered by the McHenry County Department of Health. Food inspection reports from 2010 to the present are available on the department’s website at www.mcdh.info. The website also includes information regarding how food establishment inspections are conducted and how to interpret the inspection reports. “This webpage will help residents learn more about food safety and the inspection process,” states Public Health Administrator Mike Hill. “Our inspection process follows a scoring method. The county ordinance has guidelines that determine when a facility fails an inspection for a specific problem such as a violation for food temperature control which would increase the risk for a foodborne illness.” Inspection reports are subject to public disclosure under the Illinois Freedom of Inspec-
tion Act. Until now, residents wishing to view these reports have had to make individual Freedom of Information requests to the health department, which provides many copies of these reports each year. Due to the limitations of the search engine, the website works best for individuals wishing to view inspection reports of specific establishments. Broader requests for inspection reports are still available through the Freedom of Information process. The Health Department’s Food Protection Program is responsible for permitting and inspecting over 1,275 food facilities in McHenry County. The goal of the program, according to officials, is to reduce the occurrence of foodborne illness and to promote safe food practices within the community. For more information, contact department’s Environmental Health Division at (815) 334-4585 or visit www.mcdh. info.

County sees uptick in hepatitis cases
tis C, up to 75 percent of adults infected with hepatitis C were born during those years. Every year, approximately 15,000 Americans die from liver cancer or chronic liver disease associated with viral hepatitis. However, many people can benefit from available treatment options that can eliminate the virus from the body and prevent further damage. According to the CDC: • Baby boomers are five times more likely to have hepatitis C than other adults; • The longer people live with hepatitis B and/or C undiagnosed and untreated, the more likely they are to develop serious, life-threatening liver disease; • Liver disease, liver cancer and deaths from hepatitis C are on the rise; • Injection drug users are at high risk for hepatitis B and C through sharing needles and other equipment to inject drugs. The CDC has an online Hepatitis Risk Assessment (http://www.cdc.gov/HEPATITIS/ riskassessment) designed to determine an individual’s risk for viral hepatitis. Those who take the assessment receive a confidential personalized report that can be discussed with a health care provider.

The number of hepatitis infections rose in 2014 and the McHenry County Department of Health is observing Hepatitis Awareness Month to help stem the spread of the disease. The health department reported 64 cases of hepatitis C and 10 cases of hepatitis B in 2014, compared to 55 cases of hepatitis C and seven cases of hepatitis B in 2013. Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that most people with hepatitis B or C do not know they are infected. On May 2, the CDC issued an alert to health departments nationwide urging them to take steps to identify and track HIV and hepatitis B and C cases in an effort to identify potential clusters and prevent similar outbreaks as was recently reported in Indiana. Health officials said high rates of hepatitis C are a key indicator of needle sharing and a potential HIV outbreak. Hepatitis B has lower rates of incidence related to vaccination rates. CDC recorded a 150 percent increase in acute hepatitis C cases from 2010 to 2013. In 2012, the CDC started recommending hepatitis C testing for everyone born from 1945 to 1965.
