Keyboardist, guitarist, and vocalist Lisa Furtado LaManna (inset) gets into the music during the performance. The free weekly concerts are sponsored by the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department and continue through August 13. The country group StateLine will be on stage for the June 25 performance.

The American Legion is the world’s largest veteran’s organization and Antioch’s post 748, unlike many others throughout the country, is growing. The local post will be in the Fourth of July parade and also have a presence at the It’s Thursday concerts in the park series this summer. The group meets the second Thursday of each month at the VFW hall, 75 North Avenue at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to members and anyone who is interested in possible membership. In the past year, this group has seen a 30 percent growth and is rapidly proving itself a community asset. Adjutant Mike Hellquist sat down with a reporter last week and talked about improvements in the group and planned projects. “Legion, Legion auxiliary members and other volunteers will be putting together care packages in later July for our nine active military members

and the Army’s 941st TC Detachment out of Fort Sheridan, my old unit,” he said. “Some members of that unit are currently stationed overseas,” Hellquist explained. “If someone would like to help either with packaging or providing supplies or monetary donations, that would be appreciated,” he said. Those interested in helping may contact Hellquist at (262) 359-1348 or by mail to P.O. Box 465. Antioch. The Legion is currently compiling lists of what the military members need. Item lists for the care packages will be available at the It’s Thursday concerts in the park series or by calling Hellquist. The legion post color guard will soon appear at public events and will raffle off a Brinkman grill this summer. The post hopes to sell 200 raffle tickets for $5 each for the five-burner grill with a deep fryer on one side and a regular burner on the other.

The father and mother had both lost their jobs after the long hospitalization of the mother and infants and many days off for the father. The husband, wife and children had been struggling to get by on minimum wage jobs for months. We received referrals for rent assistance from several landlords we have worked with in the past. They were right to be concerned for their tenants as they were senior citizens dealing with a health crisis. The landlords were gracious enough to provide reduced rent. Citizens wander Silver Lake in search of clues

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Perhaps you noticed a few folks roaming the streets in Silver Lake in mid June. Some were dressed a bit oddly while others wandered in small groups, going in and out of the doors of various businesses. You may have pondered just what was going on. In fact, you were looking for clues. That’s what these folks were doing. Some were looking for clues while others were pro-

viding them. The Community Baptist Church sponsored a neighborhood Clue game. The game was the brainchild of Seth and Deanna Peterson. “We played games like this in college at Northland International University,” Seth said, “and decided it would work well in our small town.” “We started talking about youth group ideas, a few months ago,’ Deanna commented. “And then this idea of a live Clue game came up.”

Flyers were handed out at the Memorial Day parade and when the game was played June 12, 12 teams with a total of 44 players participated. The game began in the Silver Lake Village Hall and Trustee Pat Dunn was on hand to unlock the door. Team Dillon won, and they won big. The grand prize had donations from Scully’s Silver Lake Grill, Dairy Queen, Taste of Italy, Silver City Suds, American Legion and the Sil-

ver Lake Barber Shop. Silver Lake police officer Robert Soma hauled the perp, Fred Meyer (Zach Zimmerman) away at the end. He shot old John Dalton. Other sites for the clue game included Silvertown Mall, the Silver Lake Fire Department and DeWitt Park. Town partners with Kunes on van purchase CORRESPONDENT

Antioch Township Trustee Peter Grant recently presented the terms of a public/private partnership used in the purchase of a van for community use. “I have been working with Kunes Country Ford regarding a 2011 Club Van with only 28,000 miles, he explained at the May 14 Township Board meeting. The van is priced at $25,000, with the township paying $10,000 and Kunes Country Ford donating the $15,000 value. “There would be a sign on the van, stating that Kunes donated to the purchase, Grant said. “And Kunes would be responsible to maintain the sign. Fellow Trustee Steve Turner challenged the purchase at the May meeting, questioning the need for a van since the old van is sitting in the parking lot. He

was told that van is no longer functioning. Antioch Township Supervisor Steve Smouse talked about the lack of public transportation in the Township and limited PACE bus service. “There is no bus in Antioch Township and the service we do have is limited,â€? he said. In a later telephone interview, Smouse explained that the current van was purchased used from Raymond Chevrolet with the same sort of arrangement as is being proposed by Kunes. “That van was ‌ used mainly by the Senior Center,â€? Smouse said. “It only seats six or seven and is no longer functioning.â€? The township does have a transit service that also travels through Grant and Lake Villa townships and stops at the Antioch Walmart on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a round trip cost of $2.

There is a dial-a-ride service Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. That serves the disabled and elderly in Antioch, Avon, Grant and Lake Villa townships with a $1 fare. The Lake County Northwest Demonstration Project provides Antioch residents with service within Antioch, Avon, Fremont, Grant, Lake Villa and Wauconda. The service also travels to the Gurnee Mills commercial area, Greenleaf Avenue, medical offices and downtown Mundelein. There is also a Wednesday medical bus service that serves anyone but does not travel to Wisconsin medial services. Grant said that purchasing the van would give more freedom of movement to township residents. “We have some folks that need to travel to St. Catherine’s in Kenosha, he said, “and this would allow us to get them

Proceeds will be used to purchase supplies for a color guard, the first the post will have since the 1960’s. “We plan to present the colors at the first Antioch High School football game in September, Hellquist explained, “and many other public events in the future. Tickets for the frill raffle will also be available at the summer concert series. The national American Legion is active in politics and was instrumental is having Gen. Eric Shinseki replaced when the Veteran’s Administration of neglect was discovered, Hellquist explained. “The American Legion called for Shinseki’s firing

when they heard about veteran’s passing away during extended wait times for medical care, he said. Shinseki, soon after, resigned the position. “National Commander Mike Helm, who served in the Army rangers has the ear of Congress and spoke up for veterans, Hellquist said. He said he doesn’t believe that Shinseki knew what was going on, but because he was in charge, he should have known. The new Secretary of the Veterans Administration is Robert McDonald and although it has only been a few months, Hellquist said progress has been made. McDonald is the former

chairman, president and CEO of Proctor and Gamble. Having a businessman in charge is a good move, in Hellquist’s opinion. “The VA needs to be run like a business, he said, “and a businessman will do that. Meanwhile, Hellquist has been busy, recruiting new members and planning community involvement. He recently presented certificates to Antioch Village Board Trustees Scott Pierce and Jay Jozwiak, already members of the post, and Mayor Larry Hanson for their participation in the Memorial Day planting of crosses on the graves of veterans in local cemeteries.

The stress of vacation

I just got back from vacation, and I hate to complain, but the pressure of it is enough to get to a person. The decision-making alone nearly put me over the edge. Day after day. After day. Times seven. Or more if you’re forced to vacation for longer than one week. It’s one thing after another. Should we go to the beach or into town? Should we take the boat or the car? When in town should we go to the candy store or ice cream shop? Once at the ice cream shop do we get a single or double scoop? Sugar or waffle cone? Sprinkles or whipped cream or both? It only gets worse from there. Vacation provides the chance to sleep in. No alarm clocks. This produces a predicament of its own: breakfast for lunch or lunch for breakfast? And so it goes throughout the day – and night. Chaise lounge on the deck or a blanket on the

delivered. The stress can be taxing. Vacations are supposed to be By a time to relax, but if you take JILL a nap in the afternoon, you PERTLER might miss out on the family Columnist cribbage championship, the opportunity to watch an afternoon movie or play beach? decision to pack the car. Midway through the week I was feeling the pressure. (Do it all! Have more fun!) And in a moment of vacationinduced clarity (either that or ice cream overload) came to an important conclusion: I didn’t have time to complete all the activities I had planned. Even if I had twice the number of vacation days, there wouldn’t be time. There’d never be enough time. And, surprisingly, that was the best news of the week. If it wasn’t possible to do it all, why even try? Pressure gone, we were free to enjoy each moment of the rest of our vacation. That, and start planning for the next one. At a recent meeting of the Circuit Judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit, Judge Jorge L. Ortiz was unanimously elected to serve as the next Chief Judge. Ortiz, who lives in Antioch and was a partner in a Fox Lake law firm, will begin his term on Jan. 4, 2016, and will end it on Jan. 1, 2017. “I am honored to be elected to serve as chief judge and grateful for the expression of confidence and support from my fellow circuit judges,” Ortiz said. “I look forward to working with all of our judges, the many wonderful employees of the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, and all of our justice partners in the administration of justice and service to the people of Lake County.” “I will do my best to continue the excellent leadership provided by my predecessors.” Ortiz became the first Hispanic judge in Lake County when he was selected as associate judge by the circuit judges in 2002. He served as associate judge until his appointment by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2008 as circuit judge and was successfully elected as circuit judge of the sixth subcircuit in 2010. Currently, the Presiding Judge of the civil division, Ortiz previously served as presiding judge of the now-titled Consolidated Family Division.

Well known as an authority on child support and family law topics, Ortiz has lectured for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child Support Enforcement, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, Loyola University School of Law and several other agencies. Involved in several professional and community organizations, he serves on the Hon. Jorge Oritiz Board of Directors of the Illinois Judges Association, the Illinois Judges Foundation and the Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County. He is a member of the Illinois State and Lake County Bar Associations. Last December he was appointed to the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood by then-Gov. Pat Quinn. In October he was presented with the inaugural Outstanding Jurist of the Year Award by the Illinois Family Support Enforcement Association. Born and raised on Chicago’s west side and in the Logan Square community, Ortiz graduated from St. Ignatius

County launches Alternative Prosecution Program If accepted into the program, the defendant shall agree to satisfy various program requirements, which may include obtaining a high school diploma, obtaining counseling and/or substance abuse treatment, completing public or community service hours, paying full restitution to the victim, writing a letter of apology, finding or maintaining employment and paying fees to both the Alternative Prosecution Program and to a designated Lake County anticrime program. Upon successful completion of the Alternative Prosecution Program, the state’s attorney will vacate the defendant’s guilty plea and dismiss the charges. The defendant then has the opportunity to immediately file for an expungement of his record. However, if a defendant fails to successfully complete the program in a timely manner, the defendant will be termi-

nated from the program and the case will be returned to court for sentencing on the original charges. This diversion program will hold offenders accountable and address the needs of crime victims. Additionally, the program gives deserving defendants a second chance and the opportunity to avoid being labeled a convicted criminal. “The value of this program is twofold: first, it makes the victims of crime whole. Secondly, it provides a unique opportunity for offenders to take responsibility for their actions, to improve their lives and to avoid the stigma of a criminal conviction, Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim said. “That is a win-win for Lake County. For more information, contact Assistant States Attorney Lisa Connelly at (847) 3773000.

College Preparatory School. He received his undergraduate degree in 1985 from Loyola University and earned his Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School in 1989. He began his legal career as an assistant state’s attorney in Lake County working in the traffic and misdemeanor di-

vision. In 1990 he joined the Fox Lake law firm of Soffietti, Johnson, Teegen & Phillips, Ltd. as an associate in the general practice of law and four years later was named a partner of the firm. Judge Ortiz and his wife Meg have two grown daughters and reside in the Antioch community.

According to the Lake County Division of Transportation’s annual road program, the need for transportation expansion and improvements exceeds the amount of funding that is available. Therefore, the department set out to determine ways to make travel on local roads and highways more efficient. In 2013, the county began to study several travel corridors to look at signal timings. The 17-month study looked at six corridors during peak travel times in the morning, mid-day and in the evening. In looking at travel times, stops and the average speed, improvements in vehicle delays and fuel consumed were calculated. The overall results of the study show that technology enhancements, adjusting the signal timings and coordinating the signals through the Lake County passage system led to a reduction in vehicle delays (1,625 hours) and a reduction in fuel consumption (544.8 gallons) per day. Not only does this save money, approximately $9.8 million a year, but this also means less time stuck in the car, department officials said. They offered the following example: A motorist drives southbound on Delany Road in the morning, and then returns home northbound through this corridor in the evening. After the signal timing changes from the study were implemented, the driver saves 186 seconds on the morning southbound trip and 71.5 seconds on the afternoon northbound trip. That means the motorist is saving about 4

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office will launch its Alternative Prosecution Program for first-time, nonviolent offenders. In exchange for accepting responsibility for their criminal conduct, these people will have the opportunity to keep a conviction from being permanently entered on their record and to avoid the effect a conviction may present over a life time. The process begins via a referral that may be made by a judge, state’s attorney, private attorney, public defender or police officer. All applicants must complete an intake interview. The applicant must then meet with, and be approved by, a panel of citizens from the community before the state’s attorney will consider admitting them into the program. This approval process includes input from the crime victim and the arresting agency.

The McHenry County Master Gardeners and McHenry County College will host their annual Garden Walk from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. The event will showcase nine unique gardens, including a garden that faces the Fox River, a dragonfly habitat and a pond garden that have never been seen before on any garden walk. The Garden Walk starts at the McHenry County College demonstration garden and continues through Crystal Lake, McHenry, Wonder Lake and Richmond. Ticket prices are $12 in advance (through July 2) or $17 on the day of the event. To purchase tickets, visit www. mchenry.edu/gardenwalk. For more information, call (815) 479-7570 or email conferencecenter@mchenry.edu. This year’s theme is “Right in Our Own Backyard.” The demo garden at the college includes a vine garden, shade garden and extensive displays of perennials and annuals. This year, a rain garden will teach visitors lessons in water conservation and how to garden in low areas.

For the first time in their 30-year history, the master gardeners have included a garden that fronts the Fox River. This nautically themed property features many varieties of roses that frame the expansive river view. In addition, the walk comes to Wonder Lake for the first time and features two properties. At one site, the lake view and pond garden enhance the perennial and vegetable gardens. The other site is a forested lot where homeowners have carved out dragonfly habitats and rain gardens by managing storm water runoff. At each of the nine gardens, guests will see special varieties of perennials and annuals in eye-catching settings. The garden hosts have labeled their plants and will be on hand to answer questions and share their secrets. In addition, master gardeners will offer educational materials at each site, highlighting each garden’s strengths. Topics such as how to create a pond garden, how to
