County launches drug, health care discount program

Winter in July

JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter

Though winter might be the furthest thing from the minds of most Antioch residents, Luke Larsen, 6, left, and sisters Kira, 8, and Jesse, 6, have a different idea at the second annual “Camping Under the Stars” event at Pedersen Park, 660 W. Highway 173 in Antioch, on Saturday. Winter was the theme of the Larsen campsite this year and it came complete with scarves, hats, penguins, polar bears, icicles, and the obligatory snowball fight. The event, spon-

sored by the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department, was expanded from last year’s single overnight stay to two nights. A dozen families took part in this year’s event, which featured games, singing, story telling, and meals. Organizer Toni Galster said photos of the campsites will be posted on the department’s Facebook website along with an online poll allowing visitors to the site to vote for the best camp.

Lake County has launched three programs to help county residents better manage the cost of prescription medications and health and dental services. As a member of the National Association of Counties, Lake County is able to offer the prescription, health and dental discount programs to residents that will provide savings of up to 75 percent on prescriptions and 15 to 50 percent on health and dental services The programs can be used by residents who do not have insurance and by those whose insurance does not cover the prescriptions or services they need. There are no annual limits placed on use, no forms to fill out, no waiting periods, no age or income requirements and no medical condition restrictions. “Many families face difficulties in trying to pay for the costs of health care,” said Tony Beltran, the Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center. “We are pleased to provide residents with these cost-saving options, making it easier for residents to obtain the services they need.” The prescription, health and dental discount programs, which are admin-

istered by CVS Caremark, include discounts on prescription medications, dental services, vision care, LASIK and PRK vision procedures, hearing aids and screenings, prepaid lab work, prepaid diagnostic imaging and diabetic supplies. A resident can begin saving on prescriptions as soon as he or she receives a discount card. For health services, memberships are available on a monthly or annual subscription basis for both individuals and families (these programs are not insurance) and discounts are available immediately upon enrollment. The discount card can also be used to save money on pet medications that have to be purchased at a pharmacy. The card is accepted at 65,000 pharmacies nationwide including major chains such as Walmart, CVS/pharmacy, Walgreens, Giant, Safeway and Rite Aid. Participating pharmacies also include the majority of community-based, independent pharmacies. “We are pleased to work with counties around the country to bring these important programs to their residents,” said National Association of Counties President Linda Langston. “Our

A recent flurry of narcotics-related arrests, search warrants and asset seizures has kept the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Narcotics Task Force busy and has increased the drugs and assets seized by police, according to Sheriff Bill Prim. A total of $345,000 in U.S. currency combined with the estimated dollar value of real estate, vehicles and other property is now more than $865,000 for 2015. In addition to a joint investigation with the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force earlier in the week that resulted in the arrest and charging of a McHenry County man, and the confiscation of about $240,000 in U.S. currency, the Narcotics Task Force served two search warrants on July 7 and 8 Wednesday in Crystal Lake and unincorporated Wonder Lake, respectively. A routine traffic stop the night of July 7 in Crystal Lake led hours later to the search warrant there. The combined amounts of narcotics and cash found in the car and the home was 135 grams of co-

caine, 184 grams of cannabis, 32 amphetamines pills, 52 hydrocodone pills, five of alprazolam; three of clonazepam; one of Vyvanse and over $3,200 in U.S. currency. Following up on information obtained during that operation led to the Wonder Lake search warrant, which netted an additional 45 grams of cannabis. The investigation continues into the Crystal Lake motorist, who is the owner of the home there, and another individual who owns the Wonder Lake residence. “We have also seen significant numbers of weapons taken off the streets,” Prim said. “Over the past six months we have seized seven assault rifles, 10 handguns and two shotguns.” Two private residences and a total of 41 vehicles add to the mounting tally since Jan. 1. “We are confident that none of this property or equipment will ever return to the wrong hands to be used for ongoing, large-scale criminal enterprises,” Prim said, “which is the best result of all.”

Raising enlightened men: blame first, question later

They were fighting again. I could hear them downstairs. There was a moderate-level crash and then muffled sounds, like maybe somebody got pushed or bumped up against a piece of furniture. It grew quiet, so I knew someone was injured. Not bad enough for the ER or anything, but maybe a stubbed toe or bruised elbow. No one was yelling, so it was fair to assume there wasn’t any blood and

nothing was broken. At least not anything major like a chair or plate. I was up in the laundry room, doing what I do there.

As I listened to the din down in the kitchen, I did what any experienced mom would do: fold clothes. I knew one of them would be up soon to fetch me. And I waited, with a sense of calm, knowing confidence and perhaps just a hint of a smile. It used to be that I would have rushed to the scene to be a hands-on, involved parent. I don’t rush anymore. I don’t know why. Maybe I’ve

become lazy. Maybe I gave birth to one too many boys. Maybe I’ve discovered that the laundry isn’t going to fold itself. Whatever the reason, as long as I don’t hear what we moms know as the “emergency scream,” I fold until I’m summoned. Either that, or until my coffee needs a refill. Thirty seconds later, the 12-year-old appeared in the doorway. The 5-year-old had kicked the 10-year-old in the

stomach. I tried to picture this in my head. I wondered if he was wearing shoes. That must’ve been a pretty high kick, I thought. But who am I to question? Blame first and interrogate later, I always say. The youngest was in his room, sniffling and a little teary. “Did you kick your brother?” I asked. He nodded, looking as

forlorn and sad as a 5-year-old can look. I knew it was probably an act, but I had to give him points for cuteness. They can still get me with their cuteness. I have to work on that. “You can’t kick your brother,” I said. “Correct?” “Correct,” he agreed, staring at his hands. Guilt proven, it was time

Highway F reconstruction causes controversy By Bethe Croy STAFF WRITER

Reconstruction of Highway F, just east of Highway O outside of Randall Consolidated School, in the Twin Lakes area has sparked concern among some residents. One such resident, Megan Swederski said many local residents are unaware of the reconstruction, and the matter was not widely discussed

with those directly affected. Swederski started a petition and has been going door to door to spread awareness of the situation. The petition has 148 signatures as of the time of publishing deadline. “We want to keep it civil and just keep people informed,” Swederski said. Swederski said the reconstruction is not only harmful to the properties it impacts,

but also potentially dangerous to the children at Randall Consolidated School. The curves on the proposed reconstruction area are sharp, leading locals to be concerned over possible accidents. Area residents show off their patriotism during the Silver Lake boat parade held on July 4.

Leadership Kenosha seeks participants Leadership Kenosha invites area residents to apply for the 2015-16 program. The purpose of Leadership Kenosha is to develop, strengthen and challenge the leadership of the community, in order to foster the leadership in both the private and public sectors of Kenosha’s economy. Participants have reported their experience has been valuable and has provided them an opportunity to gain new perspectives of Kenosha. They have described the class as “a truly mind frame changing experience,” “excellent exchange of ideas,” and a “thought provoking and enlightening experience.” Monthly workshops take place around Kenosha County in venues such as the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha, Kenosha County Health Department, Kenosha Correctional Center, Kenosha County Board Chambers and more.

“Leadership Kenosha gave me incredible insight into the inner workings of Kenosha County all while learning team, leadership and community development,” said 2013-14 participant Lauren Hansen. “I enjoyed learning about political, business, non-profit, and health sectors, all while strengthening and applying leadership skills.” The workshops are held one Wednesday each month from October through May. The tuition is $975 for Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce members ($1,025 for non-Chamber members) and includes all program materials. The first session orientation retreat is Thursday, Sept. 17 (12 to 6:30 p.m.) and Friday, Sept. 18 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). More information and the application are available on the Leadership Kenosha website: www.leadershipkenosha.com. Applications are due Aug. 15.

In total, the Community Foundation distributed $106,600 in grants - a 6.6 percent increase from the amount distributed in June 2014. The 39 grants are derived from a number of endowment funds that the Community Foundation manages. Each fund focuses its grant making on a specific cause or public interest, including basic human services (such as emergency food and shelter services), activities for area youth and seniors, initiatives that benefit women and children and programs aimed at the arts and humanities. “Our area’s nonprofit or-

ganizations continue to develop innovative and practical programs that address the county’s social, economic and cultural needs, which we are proud to recognize and support with these grants,” Executive Director Robert Schneider said. “We hope that our grant making will inspire

others in the county to #GiveLocalKenosha and support non-profit organizations that carry out programs and projects that they believe in.” A full list of grants awarded is posted online at the Community Foundation’s website at www.kenoshafoundation.org.

time we arrived. I haven’t been here to visit in six months and in that time everything has gone downhill quickly. Her house was in a disaster, and she hadn’t paid her rent for two months. Dear W.C., Two months ago my husband, two children and I moved from Arizona to Wisconsin to care for my ailing mother. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I am her only child and my father died five years ago. My husband was able to get a job here, and I am taking care

She has not done any upkeep on the house since I was here last and did it for her. There are mold and mice in the basement. The roof has been leaking for months. There is water damage from when I think my mom left the water running and the bathtub and sinks overflowed. My son has severe asthma and cannot live in this environment. He has had three serious asthma attacks that required expensive emergency room visits since we arrived. I know this cannot be helping my mother in her condition either. She had pneumonia over the winter, and I am sure it was from breathing all this toxic air. I heard about your organization at my mom’s church. I take her there every Sunday. We really need to get all of us into a rental that does not have mold, mice and leaks. After paying for the emergency room, utilities and food, we do not have funds for first month’s rent and security deposit. The landlord is ready to evict her, and I am sure he would not give her back her security deposit when he sees the water damage she caused. Could you please help our family get into a healthier environment before my son has another asthma attack? Dear readers, Having cared for my own family member with Alzheimer’s, I know how difficult it can be. It can be so dangerous for them to live alone when they forget pots on the stove or water running in the sink. Changes can sometimes be seen very quickly or they can take years to develop. It sounded like this woman was caring for her mother who had a very fast progression of the disease. It can be distressing and heartbreaking to watch and only made more distressing when you are living

in poverty. I knew I had to verify this situation for myself. I called to let them know I was coming by, knowing someone with Alzheimer’s can easily be thrown off by a change in schedule or a visitor. The daughter said she would prepare her mother for a visitor and said I could come by anytime. I told her I would be over that evening. When I got to the little house, I could see it did not look neglected from the outside. I knocked softly on the door and heard the daughter inside talking to the mother. When the door was opened, the daughter introduced herself and, after I showed my identification, she invited me inside. The mother was sitting on the sofa and looked alarmed at first. The daughter walked over to her and said, “Mom, this is the nice man I was telling you about. He’s going to talk to us for a little while.” The mother looked at me and asked, “Who are you?” When I told her who I was, she looked confused. The daughter again said, “Remember Mom? This is the nice man.” She seemed to comprehend this for a moment and then looked at the TV. She asked the daughter if she would turn on her favorite TV show, though she couldn’t remember the name. The daughter turned the TV on for her while we talked. As the mother smiled while watching her show she said to me, “I used to be able to dance like that.” The daughter said, “I

know Mom. You and Dad used to dance like that together.” The mother smiled at the good memory she was able to recall. The daughter and I took a tour of the small house and I noted the damage she had told me about in her letter. There was mold growing under the flooring in the bathroom and in the kitchen cabinet behind the sink. The basement had obviously had a flooding problem in the spring and now had mold growing as well. I am sensitive to mold myself and could feel its affects on me. I couldn’t imagine a teenager with asthma being able to live in that house when I felt it within a half hour’s time. The daughter and I sat to talk close by the mother but out of earshot so as not to distress her. We talked about her progression and then we moved on to their financial needs. I went through the household budget and saw they could get by once they were caught up on the mothers bills. I asked about the mother’s income and what she had done with her Social Security funds when she had not been paying the rent. It seems the mother had purchased an expensive grave marker for her husband and repaired her car she could no longer drive. She did not have the mental capacity to manage her funds properly for some time before the daughter even arrived. I asked the daughter if she had noticed any changes in her mother when she had visited last. She said she had noticed some forgetfulness but nothing that alarming. She said when they talked on the phone every few days she started to notice her mother repeating herself. Then one day when she called she heard the smoke detectors going off and when she questioned her mother why

(Continued from page 10)

they were going off, the mother seemed confused and couldn’t give her an answer. She had called the fire department to report the problem. When the fire department reported back to the daughter they said the house was not on fire, it was a pan she had left on the stove and forgot to turn off a burner. They told the daughter she needed to get some help to the house because it seemed in disarray and the mother had been very confused. It was at that point she knew they would have to pick up and move back to Wisconsin to help her mother. The daughter said she immediately gave up her job as a caregiver at a nursing home and drove cross country with one of her sons while her husband stayed behind with the other son to pack their belongings in a rental truck and fulfill his two-week notice. When she had arrived at the mother’s house she said it was much worse than she thought. The daughter had tears in her eyes when she said, “I was shocked at her lack of personal hygiene and the house she always kept so clean was a mess I had never seen the likes of before.” The daughter told me how she cared for seniors in a nursing home for years and knew how this disease progressed. She knew she would be needed around the clock to care for her mother. I asked about any rentals she had looked into. The daughter said she had found a rental that they would all be able to afford

together. It was all on one floor so she would no longer have to help her mother up and down stairs. There was a first-floor laundry room. There were no mice or mold problems. There was a nice screened porch she could sit outside with her mother in nice weather. The daughter gave me the address and the rental information so I could go see it for myself. As they were still paying off the mother’s debt and her husband had just begun working again, I could see they would need our help with first month’s rent and security deposit. As the mother’s show was ending, I knew we had to wrap up our home check for now. I told the daughter we could have some food dropped off if necessary and she again had tears in her eyes. She said, “It has been so hard with my son being sick and everything we needed to spend to move here. And then to find my mom in this shape has been heartbreaking.” She was holding back tears, and I squeezed her hand in comfort. She quickly dabbed her eyes with tissues saying, “I don’t want to upset my mom. She will keep asking why I’m crying, so I don’t cry in front of her.” I could see it was taking an enormous amount of strength to stop the tears from flowing. I told the daughter I would be back the following day after I went to see the rental. She looked surprised by this but I told her I could tell they needed to get out of that moldy

with both their grandmother and helping to sort through all the years of belongings she had accumulated. In fact the family was moved with just their necessary items – beds, kitchen table, dishes, clothing – right away so the son with asthma would no longer struggle to breathe the unhealthy air in the old house. He stayed at the new house with the grandmother while the rest of the family sorted items at the old house. Everyone helped make the move as smooth and stress-free as possible for the mother so she did not suffer more confusion and setbacks. At my final visit I was happy to see the new rental all organized and neat. The daughter told me how much better not only her son but the whole family was feeling after moving into the new rental. The mother was enjoying time sitting in the screened in porch listening to the birds and watching the wildlife. She even pointed out some birds to me when I visited, remembering their type. The daughter said, “She remembers some things and not others. Birds have always been her passion, so I guess that memory she gets to keep.” The memory I will always have is of this family, now healthy, and now able to get by without the stress of poverty, homelessness and loss of utilities looming in the background, thanks to all of you. We have nearly matched the Fox Charities spring 2015 $10,000 matching grant. “Why mad?” I asked. “Because he hit me first.” I could see how that might make him mad. I reached for the Kleenex and handed him a tissue. “Here, this can help get your sniffles out.” Five minutes later the three boys and I were assembled in the kitchen, making a pledge not to hurt anyone in the family. It was a solemn moment. They were all very serious about not hurting each other. Crisis settled, I filled my coffee cup and returned to the more mundane task of the laundry. I was matching socks when I heard a moderate-level crash and muffled sounds from downstairs. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. environment as soon as possible. I promised I would contact the landlord about getting out of the mother’s lease but knew he would probably keep the security deposit as they were still behind in the rent and due to the water damage. I would explain to him her deteriorating health and their need to get into a rental without stairs, a leaking basement and roof leaks. After I said goodbye, I went directly to the prospective rental. I took a look around outside as it was vacant and was pleasantly surprised to see what good shape it was in. The rooms looked to be freshly painted, there were nice hardwood floors, and the appliances looked like new. The rent was very reasonable, so I knew they would be able to easily stay on their budget all living together. I called the daughter and told her to contact the prospective landlord to tell him they would be taking the rental. I then called the present landlord and told him the mother would need to get out of her lease two months early. At first the landlord was angry and did not want to let her out. When I explained to him the state of the mother’s health and the condition of the house that he had not maintained in several years, he was quiet for a few minutes before he said, “She has been a good tenant all these years and I am sorry she has had so many problems. I know she and her husband when he was alive did a lot of the updates on that house themselves, so I will forgive her overdue rent and give her half her security deposit back.” I thanked him for his help and told him they would be moving out within the week. Everything went quickly after that. The family all pitched in packing. Even the mother was able to pack her own clothing. The sons were very helpful

Just our type Kenosha newspaper editor recognized as ‘Father of the Typewriter’

By Sandra Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Those who spend their days glued to a computer keyboard and those who in earlier times pounded away on a typewriter truly appreciate the ingenuity of Kenosha newspaper editor Christopher Latham Sholes. Sholes is known as the “Father of the Typewriter,” according to Charles Edward, Weller in his 1918 book, “The Early History of the Typewriter.” He is also well known as the inventor of the QWERTY keyboard, a keyboard that has survived the test of time. Latham Sholes was born in Pennsylvania and began his career as an apprentice to a printer. Upon completing his apprenticeship he moved to Wisconsin to work for his older brothers who owned and published a newspaper in Green Bay. His next move was to Madison where he became the editor of the Wisconsin Enquirer. But he was not to stay in that position long. One year after assuming the position of editor in Madison, Sholes moved to Kenosha, then known as Southport to become a publisher of the local newspaper. It was in Kenosha that he entered the political ring. He first served in the Wisconsin State Senate (1848-1849) as a Democrat. Then from 1852-1853 with a change to the Free Soil Par-

ty, he served in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Sholes returned to the Senate, this time as a Republican and served from 1856-1857. He played an important role in outlawing the death penalty in the State of Wisconsin. Inventor at heart Sholes’ real interest was in inventing new and useful items. He moved to Milwaukee and spent some time as the as the editor of the Milwaukee News and later the Milwaukee Sentinel. When Abraham Lincoln offered him the position as a collector for the Port of Milwaukee, Sholes gladly accepted, noting that he would be working fewer hours than he did as an editor and would have more time to work on inventions. Sholes and fellow inventor Samuel W. Soule successfully worked on a machine that would number pages of a book, which they successfully patented in 1864. Carlos Gidden an attorney and also an inventor who worked at the Kleinsteubers machine shop in Milwaukee suggested that possibly the machine could produce letters and words as well. In 1867 Sholes ran across a small article about a machine called the Pterotype, which was a prototype of a typewriter that had been invented by John Pratt. Read-

ing the description of the machine, Sholes felt that the machine was too complex and so he decided to create his own version of a typewriter. Working again with Soule and adding Glidden to the team as a third partner who provided the necessary funds, they began to develop their first version of the typewriter. The keyboard resembled that of a piano with two rows of keys, the first made of ebony and the second of ivory with a wooden framework. Sholes, Glidden and Soule received patent rights for this machine in 1868. Tough competition Their typewriter was one of many similar inventions of the time, all of them a bit different from the others. The group sent out many letters typed on the machine in an attempt to encourage interest. James Densmore of Pennsylvania believed the typewriter would eventually be highly profitable and offered to buy a share of the patent without seeing the machine. He was sold one-fourth of the patent. When he finally saw the machine he felt it was worthless in its current state and needed to be improved. Soule and Glidden left the project giving sole ownership of the patent to Sholes and Densmore. Experimental versions of

the typewriter were sent to a few stenographers whose criticisms of the machine helped to improve it. The first 50 machines produced had an average cost of $250. They took the machine to E. Remington and Sons, a manufacturer of firearms, sewing machines, and farm tools who offered to buy the patent from them. Sholes sold his half of the patent for $12,000. Densmore insisted on a royalty for his share of the patent, which eventually earned him $1.5 million. The machine was eventually produced as a Remington typewriter. In Milwaukee, Sholes continued to work on improvements for the typewriter. In 1873 he developed a new arrangement for the keys, which became known as the QWERTY keyboard. The keys were said to be arranged so that commonly used letter combinations were split up to prevent the keys from jamming when typists pressed them too quickly. However, one of the most common letter combinations the letters e and r are located adjacent to each other. The QWERTY keyboard was a success and became the standard for English language typewriters and made the transition to the computer keyboard. Christopher Latham Sholes died on Feb. 17, 1890, after a long battle with tuberculosis. While he only spent a few years in Kenosha, his time in the area was well spent. Another member of the Sholes family, his older brother Charles, also lived in Kenosha and served as a newspaper publisher, politician, and as mayor of Kenosha.

Christopher Latham Sholes is remembered as the inventor of the first easy-to-use typewriter and the inventor of the Qwerty keyboard, which has made the transition from the typewriter to the computer.

The Qwerty keyboard appeared on the Sholes typewriter in the 1870s and although there were several obstacles to overcome before the typewriter made its way into American homes, it became the standard keyboard used today. SUBMITTED PHOTO Hi-Liter
