EcoFair is Saturday
Event puts focus on environment By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Junior Miss Antioch Lindsey Lubicz, 11, (from left) Little Miss Antioch Michaela Radecki, 7, and Miss Antioch Abigail Zienty, 16, are among the area residents who attended the grand reopening of the renovated Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., on Friday. The nearly century-old theatre was closed last May in order to undergo extensive interior modernization, an exterior facelift, and installation of a new digital projection system. A second boutique theatre next door was also built. Real estate developer Tim Downey spearheaded the community effort to save the theatre, assisted by a small army of volunteers. Financial support came through corporate and individual contributions, along with a loan from the village.
Get ready, get set and go to the fourth annual Earth Day EcoFair on Saturday. This event is sponsored by the Antioch Environmental Commission and will be held in the Antioch Elementary School gym from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The school is at 817 N. Main Street in Antioch. A big part of the event is the recycled art contest. Students from Antioch area elementary schools participate. Area businesses and the Antioch Park District donate prizes. Commission member and event organizer Amanda LeBrun said the main purpose of the EcoFair, besides fun, is information. There are also vendors that sell environmental friendly products. Visitors have a chance to discover facts about nature and the environment from the International Crane Foundation, Lake County Farm Bureau, Lake County Forest Preserves, Lake County Health Department and Waste Management. The environmentally friendly businesses slated to participate include Earthly Goods, Doterra Essential Oils, Natural Products Club,
Norwex, Skinny Fiber and Wildtree. LeBrun has been in charge of the event for the past three years. “I attended the first EcoFair and discovered I knew someone on the commission,” she said. “He invited me to join and I’ve handled this event since.” LeBrun explained, “I have been a teacher for almost 20 years and (I’m) always passionate about protecting the environment as well as enjoying being out in nature.” “As a teacher,” she continued, “the subjects I have taught include biology, environmental and earth science, and chemistry.” LeBrun has also attended numerous Lake County Forest Preserve workdays and coordinated Earth Day events as an environmental club sponsor at the various schools where she taught. For several summers, she was an environmental educator for the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, The Liberty Prairie Conservancy, and Lake Forest Open Lands. Save the bees Christina Wojciechowicz

Getting away – in seven easy steps
It starts as a slight twinkle in the eye, nothing more than a spark of an idea, the beginning of grand plans. Vacation: It’s more than a word. It’s a destination. The typical vacation lasts about a week, but the trip itself is frequently a multi-stage event. Stage one involves planning and can go on for months – years even. Where to go? By land or by sea? What to do? Which attractions are most attractive? How many frequent flyer miles? Who gets to ride shotgun? The options and ideas are just the beginning of the fun. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s anticipation. The planning stage continues until roughly the day before the start of your seven days off the grid, when stage two – or imminent planning –
fit the vibe and mojo of any given vacation day. And we haven’t even touched on accessories. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s calculations. The packing stage could go on and on (and on), were it not for stage three – leaving. Like packing, leaving can be an elaborate and arduous process involving turning off lights, unplugging the coffee maker, closing windows, flushing toilets and cramming five overstuffed suitcases into the trunk of a mid-sized car. Leaving is often a déjà vu-like experience as you remember something you forgot and need to turn around and return home to grab said item before leaving again. Sometimes the déjà repeats itself, much to the chagrin of my husband, who never forgets his purse or

begins. Imminent planning, sometimes called packing, is more complicated than throwing a few pairs of shorts and T-shirts into a suitcase, although the guys I live with don’t agree. Packing is a multifaceted feat involving geometry, the art of clothing compression, knowledge of the color wheel and counting underwear. During the packing stage, one must predict mood, terrain and weather patterns for the entire week so that clothing choices not only fit into the suitcase (length x width x height), but also
sunglasses and is always ready to leave when it is time to leave – and not a second later. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s embarkation. Stage four – traveling – varies in length, but is always more harmonious if everyone has a window seat. Sitting in the middle – of a car, airplane, train or bus – is no one’s first (or second) choice, especially if you are the family dog. Traveling is typically accompanied by phrases such as, “Are we there yet?” and “I have to go… real bad.” Especially during a rush hour traffic jam just outside Atlanta. Time ticks slowly. You can’t wait to get there! But first, you must follow the map. Mile by mile by mile. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s navigation. Traveling is followed by stage five – arriving.
Kenosha. Greeters are needed for 2- to 3-hour shifts Tuesdays through Fridays on a weekly or monthly schedule. There are plenty of opportunities to learn and interact
Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s realization. The final stage, number seven, involves the inevitable return trip home. While en route, your creative juices start flowing. It starts as a slight twinkle in the eye, nothing more than a spark of an idea for a new grand vacation destination – next time. And stage one, the planning process, begins anew. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s inspiration. I, for one, can’t wait to be inspired again – the sooner the better. Upon arrival, you possess a stockpile of seven languid and unhurried days of fun and frolic. This totals 168 hours and on day one that number feels vast. You have many plans for the many things you plan to do during this immense, long sevenday stretch. Vacation: it’s more than a word. It’s expectations. And, without warning, you enter stage six as day one morphs into day four and you are wondering how the time sped by. Then you blink your eyes and it is the last day of your vacation. Where did the week go? You dot aloe lotion on your sunburnt shoulders and, with a long, heavy vacation sigh take out your suitcase and begin to fill it so you will be able to hit the road first thing in the morning.

Fair set for students with disabilities
He wrote the book on local boating
Author David D. Lester signs a book for Fox Lake resident and boating enthusiast, Nancy Bartell, at the Antioch Public Library District, 757 N. Main St. on Saturday. Lester, a local resident who decribes himself as “an unabashed water rat,” wrote “The History of Boating on the Fox Chain-O’Lakes,” a 580-page tome detailing the evolution and development of boating on one of the areas most valuable resources, the Chain O’Lakes, which, on a per acre basis, is the world’s busiest waterway. Lester, also a boat racing enthusiast and a winner of many titles, delivered a slide presentation, which described how development of the boating industry and the resort trade directly resulted in the development of northern Lake and McHenry counties. The Chain, once a speedboat racing capitol, also achieved fame as home to more national champion racers than any other body of water in the world.
Program offers free guided nature walks The Lake County Forest Preserve District, the Lake County Health Department, NorthShore University Health System and other partners are teaming up for “Rx for Health,” a walking in nature program that brings together naturalists and health care providers for guided tours of some of Lake County’s scenery. The program aligns with the Health Department’s Live Well Lake County initiative to increase physical activity, healthy eating and quality of life opportunities in order to reduce the number of adults and children in the county who are overweight or obese. The initiative is also part of a countywide collaborative branding effort called Lake County Life. Walks are free and open to all ages. Those 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. All walks start at 4 p.m. and are one to two miles in distance. These are rain or shine events and no pets are allowed (with the exception of service animals).
The schedule is as follows: • May 16 – Rollins Savanna, Grayslake (Washington Street lot) • June 6 – Grant Woods, Ingleside (south unit, Monaville Road entrance) • June 27 – Hastings Lake, Lake Villa (main entrance off of Gelden Road) • July 18 – Lyons Woods, Waukegan (entrance and parking located on Blanchard Road just west of Sheridan Road) • Aug. 8 – Ryerson Conservation Area, Riverwoods (Welcome Center) • Aug. 29 – Lakewood, Wauconda (parking lot on the west side of Fairfield Road, just south of Route 176) • Sept. 19 – Fort Sheridan, Lake Forest (follow signs to parking lot) • Oct. 3 – Captain Daniel Wright Woods (entrance is at the corner of Everett and St. Mary’s roads) For more information, visit: www.lcfpd. org/rx-for-health/.

Man drowns after canoe tips in Wooster Lake Authorities said one man died and three people were rescued after a canoe overturned on Wooster Lake in Ingleside on Sunday. Fox Lake Fire Battalion Chief Tom Preidis said two adults and two children were fishing in Wooster Lake, located primarily in the unincorporated community of Ingleside, when their boat tipped over Sunday evening. Preidis says a man onshore jumped into the water and rescued the children, ages 10 and 11, before authorities arrived. He said one of the men who fell from the canoe also was able to make it to shore. Preidis said the man who rescued the children attempted to help the second man, but he already was too far under water. He said the second man’s body was recovered a few hours later. No other injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.

Riders prepare to board the red and cream Pittsburgh trolley for a trip around the Kenosha historic district
A trolley time machine Kenosha provides historic link to North American streetcars
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT Imagine stepping back into the glamour of the early 1900s when electric railroads and trolleys served many cities in our nation – a time when trolley tracks ran down the streets and the brightly colored trolley cars carried residents and visitors throughout the city; a time when the clanging of the trolley’s bells could be heard warning motorists and pedestrians of the approaching trolley. If you are visiting the City of Kenosha, you do not need to imagine. Visitors may hop aboard one of the seven refurbished trolleys that service a two-mile circular route in the historic Harbor Park area and enjoy a ride that will travel to the Metra station, the museum complex and through Harbor Park with its view of Lake Michigan. The current electric streetcars or trolleys made their reappearance on the streets of Kenosha in the beginning of the 21st century on June 17, 2000, with the ceremonial dedication of the new Transit Center and streetcar line. The memorial ribbon was broken at 11 a.m. on that date by the maroon and cream streetcar 4610 known as the Toronto under the piloting of Richard Lindgren. Lindgren had been a motorman for the original Kenosha Electric Railway in 1932. Rides were given to the public immediately after the opening ceremony
but it was not until two days later on Monday, June 19, 2000, that the trolley line was officially open to the public. As the streets for the new Harbor Park Development were completed on the land previously used as the American Motors factory, the tracks were laid in the new pavement. Overhead the 600volt direct current electric line provides the electricity needed for the trolleys. Initially five historic streetcars were obtained, all authentic 1951 Presidents’ Conference Committee cars that had operated in Toronto, Ontario and Philadelphia prior to being refurbished, repainted, and relocated to Kenosha. Two additional cars were obtained bringing the current fleet up to seven cars. Each car is painted a different color to represent the legacy of streetcars in cities throughout North America. The car representing the Toronto streetcar system is painted maroon and cream, the Chicago car is green, the Cincinnati car yellow and green, Pittsburg red and cream and the Johnstown (Kenosha) train is orange. George Ponsolle, 86, of Chicago, was riding the Kenosha Trolley recent and recalled trolley service in the past. He remembers riding the “green hornet” trolleys on the west side of Chicago back in the 1930s. “Trolleys were a good way to get around the city,” he said. The trolley driver on the yellow and
green car referred to it not only as the Cincinnati trolley but said that to him it is the “Green Bay trolley because it exhibits the beloved Green Bay Packers’ colors.” The starting point for the Kenosha trolleys is the Transit Center on 54th Street, just east of 11th Avenue. The trolley travels west to 11th Avenue then turns south, stopping at the Metra station. At 56th Street it turns east with stops at the County Building, Dinosaur Museum, County Courthouse, Post Office, the Kiwanis Clock, and at the Museum complex, it curves around at Harbor Park’s Ring Road to return on 54th Street traveling west with a view of Lake Michigan, the Navy Park, and the Southport Light Station before returning to the Transit Center. This current trolley system was not the first electric railroad in the City of Kenosha. Just as electric railways were a prominent means of transportation in many cities throughout the country in the early 1900s, Kenosha was one of these cities that depended on electric railways for transportation. The Kenosha Electric Railway, a street railway, began service in February 1903 and was originally owned by the Binney Safety Car Company. Binney did not retain ownership of the line throughout the entire time that the railroad serviced the city, but the name seemed to
stick even though there were new owners. The Kenosha Electric Railway provided service to the city until February 1932 when the railway was replaced with electric trolley cars. Kenosha was one of the first cities in the United States to use a color-coding system for their transit routes, making it easier for passengers to recognize the correct trolley for their journey. With the arrival of more private automobiles, the use of the electric trolley cars diminished and the line ceased serving the city until its return in 2000. Pleased with the use of the trolley system, the Kenosha City Council voted 16-1 to include funding for extending the current system, pending approval of the new routes being considered. Last September the City Council voted to approve a north- south extension that will incorporate the existing east-west loop. While the trolley is a fun experience for visitors to Kenosha, it is an important form of transportation for Kenosha residents. For the more than 400 families that make their home in the Harbor Park condominiums, the trolley provides transportation to the train station, other buses and to work. The trolley is $1 for adults and children over 13, 50 cents for children from 5 to 12 years and free to children under age 4. An all day pass is available for $3.

The time is now to help
Work detailed here is fraction of help provided
Dear readers, This past month has brought many requests for assistance. We have been working hard to keep up with the need that is so great in our communities. There have been some questions about poverty in our beautiful southeast Wisconsin/northern Illiois area. People have asked me “How can there be poverty when I see so many large homes and jobs available in the newspaper?” My answer to that is the people we are helping may not be able to work. They may be living with a disability that prevents them from the labor required for a job, or it may be a single mother with children who will have to pay most her paycheck from a minimum wage job for child care and gas, or it may be a senior citizen who is not able to work any longer. Many senior citizens do continue to work past retirement age if they are physically able. That helps many seniors get by when they do not have enough saved for retirement. What about those that have become disabled or are just incapable of working any longer? Do we leave them to suffer in silence when they have to choose between rent, utilities, and food or prescription medications? SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Hi-Liter Could you walk past a senior The interior of a 1951 Presidents’ Conference Committee car provides a comfort- citizen who was truly in need and avert your eyes? able ride and the route provides a view of Harbor Park and Lake Michigan. If you saw them cold in their apartment would you not only offer your coat but would you also offer to help them pay their utilities? When I get asked about the lazy welfare people taking advantage of our government and our charities, I find myself defending the poverty stricken. So much attention is given to the small percentage of abusers that should be focused toward those truly in need. After all the years I have been providing assistance, I have a very good idea when someone is trying to get a hand out and when someone is truly in need of a hand up. Ninety-nine percent of the requests we receive are from our fellow creations in desperate need or a referral from the group of churches, schools, social workers, etc. that we work with. These trusted people that refer the poverty stricken to The Time Is Now to Help see the needs of their parishioners, students and clients first hand. They know when they are hungry, cold and nearly homeless. We often help in emergency situations. These are usually brought to our attention by a referral. A family recently displaced due to a fire was referred to us by another organization that could not afford to provide emergency shelter and assistance with food, clothing and other daily necessities. We together provided shelter for the family and their pet in a motel, clothing, toiletries and food. This assistance helped them get by until they found a new rental. Stars shine bright at theater reopening Man drowns after canoe tips in Wooster Lake Authorities said one man died and three people were rescued after a canoe overturned on Wooster Lake in Ingleside on Sunday. Fox Lake Fire Battalion Chief Tom Preidis said two adults and two children were fishing in Wooster Lake, located primarily in the unincorporated community of Ingleside, when their boat tipped over Sunday evening. Preidis says a man onshore jumped into the water and rescued the children,
ages 10 and 11, before authorities arrived. He said one of the men who fell from the canoe also was able to make it to shore. Preidis said the man who rescued the children attempted to help the second man, but he already was too far under water. He said the second man’s body was recovered a few hours later. No other injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.

Grant Community High School will present ‘Oliver, the Musical,’ Friday through Sunday. This classic musical is an adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel. Show times Friday and Saturday are at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Fees/Admission: Adults $9, seniors and students, $7.
Contact springmusicaltix@grantbulldogs.org for advance tickets. Same day ticket sales start one hour before the performance at the door. The school is at 285 E. Grand Ave, Fox Lake. For more information, contact Caitlin Scheib at (847) 587-2561, extension 3771.

He wrote the book on local boating
Spring roadside litter cleanup planned
The Promote Fox Lake Organization has scheduled a spring roadside litter cleanup on Sunday beginning at 7:30 a.m. Those interested in volunteering should meet at the Jewel parking lot at highways 12 and 134 at 7:30 a.m. Volunteers will clean Highway 12 from Hartigan Road to Moretti’s Restaurant and park locations. Children 10 and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Younger groups of children and volunteers will be assigned to a park location for cleanup. Garbage bags will be provided. Anyone with question should call Amy Serafin at (847) 587-3944 or email serafina@foxlake. org.

The Lake County Forest Preserve District, the Lake County Health Department, NorthShore University Health System and other partners are teaming up for “Rx for Health,” a walking in nature program that brings together naturalists and health care providers for guided tours of some of Lake County’s scenery.

How to guard against severe weather rip-offs The first of what will be many days of severe weather this spring and summer brought with it a tornado, high winds, hail and flooding. In some cases home owners will need assistance to fix problems. The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to use caution in selecting contractors to make repairs. “Along with the damage, natural disasters also bring scam artists,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “These scammers are known as storm chasers and are a real threat; they rip-off consumers with promises of great work at cheap prices.” Going door-to-door they’ll make offers of roof and siding
repair, removal of downed trees and damaged landscaping even auto repair. Bernas notes, “If anyone comes to your door offering to begin work on damage, take their information and tell them that you will follow up if you are interested in using them for repairs.” If your property has been damaged as a result of severe weather, the BBB offers these tips before choosing a contractor: • When approached by a contractor, ask for proof of licensing and bonding. • Try to get at least 3-4 quotes from contractors, and insist that payments be made to the company, not an individual. • Do not pay for the job in
advance. Be wary of any contractor who demands full payment up front. • Do not hire people who show up at your door offering services such as tree or debris removal and roof repair. • Resist high-pressure sales tactics such as the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hire the contractor on the spot. • Check out the company first with the BBB at www. bbb.org and deal only with reputable local contractors. • Get a written contract that specifies the price and the work to be done and a time frame. In Illinois state law requires a written contract with all costs enumerated for home repair or remodeling work over $1,000. • Prices are often high in
the immediate aftermath of a storm. Buy only the services that are necessary to make your home safe and habitable. Wait at least a few days to hire other contractors because the rates are likely to drop. • Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem. Otherwise, pay by check. Never pay in cash. • Check that the contractor’s vehicle has signs or markings on it with the business name and phone number. • Be sure that all promises made are put in writing. If you have flooding problems to avoid being scammed, the BBB recommends three things to successfully hire a contractor: • Request bids from two or three different companies. • Don’t automatically pick the lowest bid. • Base all bids on the same criteria. Additionally, review contracts thoroughly reading all agreements, guarantees and instructions. Bernas cautions that consumers should never sign a blank or partially blank contract. “Make sure all oral promises are put in writing.
Discover the
mine if permits or inspections are required. • Determine whether the contractor has the proper insurance. The BBB also makes these recommendations to property owners looking to obtain flood insurance: • Call your insurance agent or company to inquire about the availability of flood insurance in the area. Keep in mind that flood insurance becomes effective 30 days after it is purchased. • Standard flood coverage does not typically cover damage resulting from sewer backups or sump pump issues. Ask your insurance agent or company if such additional coverage is appropriate to add to your policy. • Homeowners should take an inventory of their personal property and make photocopies of their insurance policies, keeping all such important papers in a secure location away from home. Taking pictures of various rooms and their contents is also a great way to document the contents. For more tips on scams, visit www.bbb.org, like on Facebook and follow on Twitter.
Be wary of vaguely worded provisions, exclusions or limitations which could pose a problem later,” Additionally he notes, “In Illinois a contract is required for all repairs totaling more than one thousand dollars”. Typically, a down payment of one-third the total contract price is made with additional payments due after completion of each phase of work. Final payment should not be made until the job is completed and you have inspected the work. Before signing any home improvement contract consider the following tips from the BBB: • Research for details and free information on contractors you can trust at www.bbb. org and consider using the BBB’s FREE online service eQuote to obtain estimates, proposals or general information from BBB Accredited contractors. • Get all estimates in writing. • Never sign a contract with blank spaces or one you do not fully understand. •Homeowners should check with local and county units of government to deter-

Car runs stop sign, two injured A 17-year-old Wauconda man and a 37-year-old Harvard man were treated April 5 and released from area hospitals following a two-vehicle crash that occurred in unincorporated Hartland Township. According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation indicates that a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 was traveling westbound on Dunham Road about 3:30 p.m., when a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling northbound on Menge Road and failed to stop for the post-
ed stop sign at this intersection. The front end of the Chevrolet hit the right side of the Dodge causing the units to leave the roadway to the northwest. The Dodge struck several trees and rolled onto its right side. The driver of the Dodge was Pedro Guerrero-Hernandez, 37, who was transported by ambulance to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock. Guerrero-Hernandez was wearing his seatbelt and there was no airbag deployment in his vehi-
cle. The 17-year-old, male driver was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was wearing his seatbelt and there was airbag deployment in his vehicle. At the time of this release no citations have been issued. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of the Harvard Fire Protection District, Marengo Rescue and REACT also assisted at the scene.
Free document shredding offered Local residents are invited to take advantage of a free document-shredding event on Saturday. The shred day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, in the parking lot of Woodstock Harley-Davidson, 2235 S. Eastwood Drive. Residents may bring paper documents without staples and bindings to be de-
stroyed on site in a mobile shredding truck. The event is open to the public and free of charge. “This event will allow McHenry County residents to dispose of some of the clutter that can build up without having to worry about whether their documents were safely destroyed,” said state Rep.
Jack Franks, D-Marengo, who is hosting the event. “This is a convenient way to help ensure that important information does not fall into the wrong hands and I look forward to seeing everyone who comes out.” For more information about the event, call (815) 334-0063 or email jack@ jackfranks.org.
