It’s all giggles for Morgan DeWitt, 8, (from left) Wyatt Flade, 5, and his sister, Abigail, 8, as they spray kindergarten teacher Tami Dati (left, foreground) and first-grade teacher Deon Obrochta with cans of Silly String during the Hillcrest Fun Fair held at the Hillcrest Elementary School in Antioch on Saturday. Children enjoyed games, bounce houses, raffle and silent auction prizes, a split-the-pot, and face painting.

SERVING ANTIOCH, PADDOCK LAKE, SALEM, SILVER LAKE, TWIN LAKES, WILMOT & TREVOR

Woman charged A 47-year-old Antioch woman is charged with reckless use of a weapon after she allegedly fired two shots into the air and one into a couch in her apartment during an argument with her boyfriend. April A. Palozzotto is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm – a Class 4 felony. The woman’s 7-year-old son was home at the time of the incident, but was not harmed. He was initially taken into protective custody, but has since been released to a family member. On April 19 at 11:17 p.m., Antioch police were dispatched to 431 Filweber Court, Apt. 4, in reference to a domestic disturbance with possible shots fired. Officers met with Palozzotto, who said she had been in an argument with her boyfriend who had already left. Officers checked the apartment and found Palozzotto’s son asleep in a bedroom. Investigators contend that during the domestic disturbance with her boyfriend, Palozzotto retrieved her .380 Taurus, and fired the weapon two times in the air out of her bedroom window. The boyfriend witnessed this and when Palozzotto confronted him again, she allegedly fired the weapon again inside the apartment, striking a couch in the living room, according to police. The boyfriend left the apartment on foot and officers requested assistance from Lake Villa, Fox Lake, Illinois State Police, Lake County Sheriff and the Gurnee Police Departments to locate him. After an intensive search, officers were able to locate the boyfriend, who allegedly confirmed Palozzotto’s actions and that he was uninjured during the incident. The weapon and remaining ammunition were retained as evidence. The three shell casings, as well as the bullet from the couch, were also retained as evidence, according to police. Palozzotto was taken to Lake County Bond Court, where she was remanded on a $25,000.00 cash bond. A Class 4 felony is punishable by one to three years imprisonment and/or fine of up to $25,000 upon conviction.

who, if they hadn’t been rocked out of bed by the explosions, were sure to be by our decibel-rich generator. I suggested we go back to bed. My husband was having nothing of my logic because he was operating under logic all his own. And he’d waited more than two years to do so. He spent the next 15 minutes untangling various extension cords, which were soon plugged into the beast in the garage and summarily snaked throughout the house and attached to various electronic devices. By 9:00 a.m. we had two TVs on and coffee brewing. He was beginning to speak my language. I have to admit, I woke up that morning a skeptic, but by noon I was a convert. My husband finally won me over to his generator inclinations. It only took him two-and-a-half years to accomplish the feat. Perhaps he is a patient man after all. Back in the fall of 2012, my husband developed a genuine need for a generator. He claimed his motivation was based out of love for our family – from a desire to keep us safe, warm and with readily available access to microwave popcorn and video games. Some may remember December 21, 2012, as the end date of the ancient Mayan calendar. Doomsday enthusiasts (now there’s an oxymoron) predicted an end to the world as we know it, while stocking up on freezedried meats, powdered milk and generators. Generators are powerful machines capable of powering up any number of electrical appliances during power outages or end-of-the-world zombie apocalypses. They are useful and loud and – dare I say – manly. My husband learned all about them and developed a whopping case of generator envy. I don’t think he really believed the world was about to end. He just wanted an excuse to buy a generator. He wouldn’t rest until we had one of our own. The bigger, the better. I wasn’t even aware generators existed for private

Country Thunder to receive ACM award For country music fans, there’s nothing like the strains of Country Thunder rocking the countryside of Twin Lakes in July. Now the festival is in line

for an American Country Music award. The Academy of Country Music has named Country Thunder USA: East “Festival of the Year” for the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards. The ACM Industry Awards, voted on by the Academy’s professional members, honor the behind-

the-scenes industry professionals and venues who contribute so much to the artistry, success and longevity of country music. The awards ceremony will be Sept. 1, 2015, at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. “Everyone at Country Thunder is so thankful to the Academy of Country

Music and all of the voters for this prestigious award,” said Troy Vollhoffer, executive producer of Country Thunder. “It’s an honor to be named alongside the nominees and winners, which include the best venues, promoters and clubs in the industry.” For more than two decades, Country Thunder fans

have put on their cowboy boots and two-stepped for the premier country music and lifestyles event. Owner’s death puts music store in a bind Fiancée seeks public’s help in raising funds

Above: Tricia Wolf stands outside Musician Makers, 911 Main St., Antioch, on Saturday. Wolf is engaged in an effort to keep the music store open and hopeful the community will help in that cause. Tricia Wolf of Musician Makers, 911 Main St., Antioch, is seeking the community’s support in keeping her store afloat. Wolf’s fiancée and the original owner of Musician Makers, Scott “Chester” Yeager, died suddenly from a heart attack in February at the age of 41. Wolf’s mission since then has been to rescue the business from possible closure due to debt and the less-than-friendly economic climate affecting many small businesses. “I hope to keep the store going both to keep Chester’s memory alive and to keep a music store in Antioch a reality,” Wolf said. “There has been a viable music store in the village for over 25 years. Even though we are a smaller operation, if our inventory doesn’t carry a specific item, we can order it for the customer.” Musician Makers is more than a retail store, however. It is also a training ground for aspiring musicians. As many as 300 students have been enrolled for the private lessons offered. Currently, almost 150 are in classes. “Our students are another reason I would hate for the store to close. It is inspiring to see them improving their talents week to week,” Wolf said. “I’m fearful that if we close, many of the students will simply give up on their lessons and developing their musical talents.” In an effort to stabilize the business, Wolf has initiated a fundraising campaign on the Crowdrise website. Those interesting in helping should visit crowdrise.com and search for “music store.” Additionally, a fundraiser is planned for Sunday, May 17, at Anastasia’s, 950 Hillside Dr., Antioch, with the restaurant donating space for the event. To learn more about Musician Makers and their fundraising efforts, visit their website at musicianmakers. com, email contact@musicianmakers.com, or call (847) 838-3635.

Silver Lake looks to sheriff for policing By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth made a very simple statement to residents of Silver Lake recently. “I am your sheriff,” he said. “I hold a constitutional office and I answer to the voters.” Beth reminded about 70 Silver Lake residents of that April 14 at a public hearing held at Riverview Grade School regarding policing services for the village. “You already pay taxes for our services,” Beth said, “and we show up when you need us.” Beth outlined several different options for Silver Lake to contract with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department for police services. One option is for 16.5 hours of coverage a day with a base cost of $275,079. A 20.5-hour per day option would cost $338,486. The Silver Lake police budget current stands at $340,000 – about $100,000 less than last year. Budget constraints within the village have forced a number of different financial cuts – including going to a part-time police chief – and this move could save Silver Lake a considerable amount of money. How much was the subject of some disagreement. An extra squad on Friday and Saturday nights could translate into an addition $20,000, and the estimated cost of the water patrol is $4,678 after Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reimbursement.

Using the current budget, some at the meeting felt the savings would be $65,000, while others felt it would be closer to $165,000. But beyond just the possible financial savings, there were a number of other issues for Beth to address with last week’s audience. In the last 12 months, KSD answered 425 calls in the village, while SLPD answered 1,197. “We already know your village,” Beth said, “and there are always deputies nearby.” One questioner wondered if “naughty” officers would be exiled to Silver Lake. Beth retorted that they fire “naughty” officers. “We hand-pick the officers for Bristol and Paddock Lake,” Beth said. “We do rotate them out after about a year.” One concern was that if the village does contract with KSD, dedicated patrol cars could be pulled to another location, leaving the village without protection. “There isn’t a municipality that doesn’t require extra aid,” Beth said. “If there is an incident at B and 50, we call on your officers to stay on the scene until we arrive. If there is a larger incident in Silver Lake, we show up.” Other expressed concerns included less coverage and water patrol. Silver Lake police officer Chris Schneider commented that the officers use out of date vests. Outgoing Board President Sue Gerber took

exception to that comment the following night at the regular board meeting, saying that the village reimburses officers for equipment purchases. It was pointed out by trustee Mike Decker that with the current budget, Silver Lake didn’t have enough money

to purchase enough ammunition to meet the state required twice annual shooting qualification. Beth said he has room for the Silver Lake officers, provided they pass the required tests and make it though probation.

What’s your bid?

“We work to make sure they pass probation,” Beth said. “We already have a lot of time into an officer at that point.” Any officer form SLFD that would be hired by the county would be at the bottom of the rooster as far as seniority, but

they would be compensated with pay and vacation for the years of service they have. Benefits to the officers, according to Beth, would be an immediate pay raise and the ability to learn other areas of the law enforcement field and to advance.

SERVING FOX LAKE, LAKE VILLA, INGLESIDE & LINDENHURST
