Antioch seeks separation for Association told to obtain P.O. box By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Sophia Rae, 5, gazes into a crystal ball at one of the vendor booths on opening day of this year’s Antioch Farmers Market at the northeast corner of Orchard Street and Main Street on June 4. The magical sphere, actually a glass paperweight, was for sale at the Knife Sharpening by Kris booth, one of a number of vendors who attend the weekly event. The market is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and is open on Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m.

Back in February, Vincent Accardo, who was campaign manager for recently elected Trustee Ed Macek, appeared before the Antioch Village Board to discuss a letter he received from the Antioch Firefighters Association that was addressed to candidates in the upcoming election. He appeared at the June 1 regular board meeting to contend the minutes for the February meeting didn’t accurately express what was said. “Mayor Hanson told Fire Chief Nixon that the association must have its own P.O. Box number,” Accardo said, “and that was not what was written in the minutes.” The minutes stated, “Those present suggested that the association obtain a P.O. Box and use that for correspondence.” Accardo said the letter was from the Antioch Firefighter’s Association yet the address and telephone number used was Station 1. More recently, Accardo said he received a letter for the pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Antioch Firefighter’s Association. The fire department phone number and address was used
again. “When I called the number on the letter (for the pancake breakfast) the assistant fire chief answered,” he said. Both Hanson and Village Attorney Robert Long agreed that the minutes needed to be corrected and that Nixon had been instructed regarding the need for the firefighter’s association to have a post office box and separate telephone number. Hanson then asked Nixon to respond to the questions from Accardo and Nixon replied that the association is completely separate from the fire department, and the association letterhead was used. He stated that no village resources were used for the letter, which was signed by the association president. “This is how its been done for 100 years,” Nixon said. “Nothing inappropriate is being done.” Village Trustee Scott Pierce is chairman of the emergency services committee and said he would be adding this issue to the list he is keeping of items that he plans to discuss with Nixon at their next meeting. The officers of the firefighters’ association are president Ryan Keefe, vice president Chris Nixon and secretary, Marianne Peistrup.

Imperfect parenting of imperfect kids This message goes out to the young mom with three boys who recently apologized about not being able to stifle her energetic brood – and to the parents of all kids who have ever acted out in public, but especially those with boys who are not always perfect. (Those of you with perfect kids need read no further. Wink.) The rest of us know who we are. We’re the ones in checkout line at the supermarket with a kid wailing so loudly the store manager comes over and offers to bag our groceries. We’ve had to

leave a store – and a halffull cart – more than once because the behaviors of our children made further shopping impossible. We do not always look forward to parent teacher conferences. We are those parents. We find ourselves sighing and apologizing a lot – sometimes even when there’s nothing to apologize
for. It becomes second nature and comes with the territory – uncharted territory for most of us. Because who ever thinks they will be a parent to imperfect kids? Certainly not me. But it happens. Thank goodness. It’s probably politically incorrect to differentiate boys from girls. Each child comes with his or her unique set of gifts and challenges. This is true. But I am here, deep in the trenches, telling you that mothers of boys (as in plural) belong to an elite club. It’s a club filled

Community briefs Theater to present Father’s Day storytelling event
PM&L Theatre will present the art of storytelling on Father’s Day, June 21, at 3 p.m. This Storytelling Sunday event is presented and performed by members of PM&L Theatre as a fundraiser for the remodeling of the recently acquired building that will bring extra comfort and additional enjoyment of the arts in Antioch. Featured storytellers Randy Margison (Round Lake), Robert Krause (Round Lake Park), Dee Baum, Aileen Biel, Tom Hausman and Connie Wurster (all of Antioch), will present a repertoire that includes an updated Jewish tale, a personal story about London in World War II, a tall tale from the American South and an original work about life with cats. Additional folk tales and classic stories will round out the 75-minute program. Tickets are $5 each, general admission, and are available at the door. Fathers accompanied by family get free admission. The box office will open June 21 at 2:30 p.m. Antioch Theatre is at 877 N Main St., Antioch. Parking is available on the street, in the public lot behind the theatre and in the public lot west of Main Street.

Beginning in late spring and continuing into the autumn, a series of traps are set around the county, including within the Lake County forest preserves. At each site, a pool or batch of mosquitoes is tested weekly for West Nile virus. Areas of stagnant water are also investigated throughout the season for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito, which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois. Finally, the locations of dead birds are monitored to assist in the assessment of potential West Nile virus activity. The Health Department works closely with municipalities, townships, and the Lake County Forest Preserve District in monitoring the mosquitoes that may pose a public health threat. Information about WNV can be found on the Department’s website at www. Fightthebitenow.com.

The Lake County, Ill., Health Department and Community Health Center is encouraging residents to be vigilant about eliminating sources for mosquitoes to breed as well as using protection to avoid contracting West Nile virus. Most people become infected with West Nile virus by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds and then spread the virus to humans and other animals. In 2014, two human cases of West Nile virus were reported in Lake County. In addition, 31 pools or batches of mosquitoes and one bird tested positive for the virus. “The two human cases reported last year remind us that it is still important for residents to protect themselves against West Nile virus,” said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s executive director. “We can do this by protecting ourselves against mosquito bites and ensuring that the environment around us is not conducive to mosquito breeding.” Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water holding containers; poke holes in tires used as bumpers on docks • Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris

Couple struggles after son’s death Dear W.C., My husband and I lost our 43-year-old son, our only child, nearly two years ago in a car accident. He was hit by a drunken driver. He was in the hospital for two weeks before he died. He was going through a divorce before he died. At the time of his death, he was not legally divorced yet so she got everything when he died. Our son lived with us at the time of his accident. He paid rent, part of the utilities and helped us around the house. He was driving our car in the accident. We only carried liability insurance for our car that was totaled, so we lost our vehicle as well. Our son not only helped us around the house, he also helped us make ends meet. Without his help or a reliable car, we are really struggling. We already lost our home to foreclosure and are now awaiting eviction. We have nowhere to go without a security deposit, first month’s rent and a reliable car to put our things in. My husband has had several strokes and is unable to work. I have rheumatoid arthritis and several other medical problems that have really flared up since the death of our son, our foreclosure and pending eviction. We have not been able to get to the doctor as much as we are supposed to without a car. We just can’t seem to get past this painful time both mentally and financially. I hear my husband cry sometimes when he knows I’m in the other room. Sometimes we just look at each other and begin to cry together. We can’t believe we made it to this age, this point in our lives, only to spend it alone and homeless.

They did not realize we had done this until they went to bed the first night in their new apartment. I received a voicemail that night filled with happy tears and gratitude for everything we did for them. I could hear them both shouting into the phone, “Sal where did this new bed come from? You are so thoughtful. We never told you how bad our backs felt when we got up every morning. You were already doing so much for us, we couldn’t ask for a mattress too. Everyone at The Time Is Now to Help truly are angels sent from above.” When I stopped by a few days later to see how they were getting by, I noticed how much better both the husband and wife were doing. No longer did I see the stressed, worried faces. Gone were the tears and slumped shoulders. The wife was moving freely around her new space, no longer burdened with piles of unnecessary belongings. She showed me the shelf in their living room dedicated to their son. She had added a few photographs and one of his trophies stood proudly next to them. I told her how nice everything looked and especially how good she and her husband looked. The wife gave me a hug and said, “We just can’t thank you, The Time is Now to Help and your wonderful volunteers and supporters enough. We felt like we died along with our son and now we feel like living again. That is because of all of you reaching out to us and changing our lives. Even our health has improved. I can’t even explain how much this has changed our lives.” I hugged her in return telling her how glad we were that we could be there to help. embarrassed. Because, gosh darn it, if you were a better – stricter, more on the ball – parent they wouldn’t do these things! You are trying your best and still they spray paint the trees in the backyard. They mix Mentos and Coke. They take apples from the neighbor’s tree without asking or throw rocks at each other – just because they can. Those things. On a good day, they lose the chain from their bicycle or take the book I’m reading to cover the tadpole bowl. A bad day often involves broken glass. Hopefully not the tadpole glass. When I was a rookie parent every minor infraction seemed intense. Each boyish blunder hung heavy around my neck like a noose. Hot Wheels cars clogging the toilet? Picking the neighbor’s peonies? Cringe worthy. But you know how the saying goes: When life hands you a noose, make it into a necklace. It took me years, but I stopped cringing over the small stuff. Then I realized almost all of it is small stuff. That is cause for celebration – for imperfect parents with imperfect kids
everywhere. Rejoice! We can wear our “nooselaces” with a semi-sense of pride and learn to laugh at the bulk of it. What else can we do? They are kids (or boys as the case may be) and they do dumb things – like bring a tree frog home in their pants pocket. Or have a contest to see who can eat the most pizza before throwing up. Or make yellow snow. They make mistakes. So do we. All of us. Perfect or not. When we stick together and love one another despite our imperfections, it changes our definition of the word and makes the term unnecessary, not unattainable. When they mess up and break something again (and they will) often the best we can do is laugh and apologize – not necessarily in that order. And we can do so understanding that things are things and kids are kids. The difference being one can be replaced; the other cannot. That’s one big fish Village OKs iconic statues for Twin Lakes restaurant STAFF WRITER
The Twin Lakes Village Board approved a request to allow a large fisherman and fish statue to be mounted on top of Mad Dan’s Restaurant during a special board meeting June 1. The 14-foot-long fish and the 12-foot-tall fisherman fiberglass duo are a wellknown icon to many people familiar with the former Fisherman’s Dude Ranch in Des Plaines, Ill, which opened in 1956 and closed down in 1997. Ken Perl, owner of Mad Dan’s 200 E. Main Street, said he used to fish there when he was younger. He said many people in the Twin Lakes area are familiar with the Fisherman’s Dude Ranch. “I think it will bring attraction to the town,” Perl said. He said he believes it will be very well accepted in the village, and he is not expecting any conflicts. SUBMITTED GRAPHIC Hi-Liter An exchange between This is a projected view of what the fiberglass fisherman and fish duo will look like two Village trustees during mounted outside Mad Dan’s Restaurant, 200 E. “We always welcome new customers into our village,” she added. The fisherman and the fish, weighing in at 350 pounds and 425 pounds, respectively, will be mounted on cemented steel pipes outside the restaurant to advertise its fish fry. “We’re famous for our fish fry, so I think it’s going to help promote that,” Perl said. He said the fisherman and fish are being touched up at the moment and should be mounted within a month. Mad Dan’s Restaurant has been in the area for about 31 years, relocating from just off the lake to the current Main Street location about eight years ago.

the special board meeting proves the size and nature of the statues certainly spark a conversation. “What kind of fish is that?” Trustee Tom Connolly asked. “It’s one big ugly fish is what it is,” Trustee Barbara Andres responded. Regardless of the various opinions on the statues, it is expected to attract attention and generate interest from potential visitors. “I definitely think it could serve as a new landmark for the village,” Village Administrator Jennifer Frederick said. The statues have a certain historical and iconic element that the community can appreciate, Frederick said.

179 tickets issued during recent seat belt campaign The recent seat belt enforcement campaign in Lake County ended with 179 total citations written by Lake County Deputies over 12 days. Sheriff’s Deputies worked eight details specifically targeting seat belt violations, which resulted in 85 citations including 47 seat belt citations and a warrant arrest. There were also six drunken driving patrols that resulted in 94 citations, including six driving under the influence arrests. “Memorial Day weekend kicked off summer vacation season and our priority was to ensure that everyone arrived at their destination safe,” Sheriff Mark C Curran, Jr., said. “Notice was given that the Lake County Sheriff’s Of-
fice would be cracking down on those not wearing seat belts. Those drivers and passengers who chose not to heed the warning were ticketed.” The stepped-up enforcement of seat belt laws began on May 14 and concluded May 25. This enforcement campaign was part of the 2015 national Click It or Ticket mobilization. As part of the national mobilization, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with law enforcement agencies across the country to ticket motorists not wearing their seat belts. The high visibility enforcement campaign was timed to begin with increased travel for the Memorial Day weekend.

Antioch Parks and Recreation staffer Bernadette Rowe (left) doubles as sommelier as she pours samples for the crowd taking part in this year’s Summer Wine Walk at Piggly Wiggly, 460 Orchard St., on Saturday. The Pig was one of 23 downtown businesses taking part in the event sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Home brewing presentation on tap Sunday in Union A presentation on the history and resurgence of home brewing will be offered by the Midnight Carboys Homebrew Club of Crystal Lake at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the McHenry County Historical Society, 6422 Main St., Union. Interest in learning how to craft a cold beer on one’s own never has been higher. According to the American Homebrewers Association, there are an estimated 1.2 million homebrewers in the United States – two thirds of whom have embraced the hobby within the last decade. Collectively, they produce about 2 million barrels of beer a year. Bill Cross, treasurer and past president of the Midnight Carboys Homebrew Club of Crystal Lake, said he became interested in home brewing about seven years ago after taking a tour of the Gray Brewing Co. in Janesville, Wis. “The head brewer there said he had six days of intense study and six weeks of on the job training. I thought, ‘I can do that,’ Cross said. “I enjoy the hell out of it. I love to cook, anyway, and I like to drink beer. Now I get to cook my beer, basically. And what I turn out is equal to or better than what I get in the grocery store. The presentation will discuss brewing an extract-based beer (beer in a box), whose ingredients come concentrated in a powder or syrup and do not require a chemistry degree – there is no mashing required to convert the starches in grain to sugar. That compares to the more time-consuming all-grain form of brewing that hinges on
adding barley, malt, hops, yeast and water in the right way at the right times. “With all-grain there are more choices, said Cross, a software engineer from McCullom Lake. “You can add fruit, cocoa powder, vanilla, spruce tips. We try everything – although it’s not necessary that you should. It’s the hobby of it. Making beer at home also is cheaper. “I just made 10 gallons of saison, Cross said. “For four and half cases of that at the liquor store I’d be dropping $40 or $50 a case. It cost me about $50 bucks, but it also took five hours. That is the hobby part. Club members will show off examples of the equipment required, offer a suggested reading list and give attendees age 21 and older a taste at the end. The program, titled “Home Brew, Craft What’s Inside of You, is free with admission to the museum. The museum,
which includes a new history of brewing exhibit, is open from 1 to 4 p.m. “The homebrew club is the way to go, Cross said. “You can talk about stuff. You can experiment together. You can get knowledge from a whole lot of people. Unlike from friends and relatives, who just want to drink free beer, you get an honest and sometimes brutal opinion. The Midnight Carboys meet at 7:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen, 110 N. Main St., Crystal Lake. For information visit www.midnightcarboys.com. What typically starts out in the kitchen quickly moves to the garage or – in Cross’ case – the basement, after people begin to explore the nuances of fermentation and bottling. Having a readily accessible water supply is key. “The laundry doesn’t get done on brew day, Cross said with a laugh.
Health care provider CPR class offered McHenry County College will offer a Health Care Provider CPR class from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on June 23 in Room A103 at the college, located at 8900 Highway 14, Crystal Lake. For those entering or currently working in all health care settings, this course meets the requirements for recognition as a Basic Life Support Rescuer for health care providers by the American Heart Association.
