Blown away After the storm, it’s time to help and hug By Patricia Bogumil STAFF WRITER

Terry Alby is among those who arrived on the scene after a tornado ripped through sections of northern Illinois April 9. Alby, a Waterford, Wis., resident and freelance photographer, left home April 10 to photograph scenes of destruction caused when a fierce tornado ripped apart buildings in the City of Rochelle and small communities such as Fairdale. “I was just overwhelmed by the destruction,” he said. “Everywhere you look are wood projectiles stuck everywhere. Think about the human disaster with all that stuff flying around. It’s amazing there wasn’t more.” Two women in Fairdale were reported dead from the tornado; at least 20 other victims reportedly were sent to area hospitals. Several of Alby’s pictures accompany this story, including one with Ray and Betty Kramer, who became media darlings after talking with TV reporters about their rescue with 10 others from the storm cellar of Grubsteakers restaurant in Rochelle, Ill. The Kramers, who are in their 80s,

ran from their car and took shelter inside Grubsteakers just as the tornado swept by, said Alby. Their home weathered the storm, and Alby talked with them Friday while the Kramers were out with a church group helping everyone they could in the storm’s aftermath. “When we were done talking, I gave Betty a hug,” said Alby, “and then Ray said he could use a hug, too, so he got one. I usually don’t hug guys, but this time it seemed appropriate.” Here are some facts about tornadoes in Illinois from the McHenry County Emergency Management Department: • Illinois ranks fifth in the United States for the most tornadoes per square mile. • The majority of Illinois tornadoes have occurred between April 1 and June 30 and between the hours of 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. However, tornadoes have occurred every month of the year at all hours of the day. • Nearly 30 percent of all tornadoes in Illinois occur after dark. • There is an average of 47 tornadoes each year in Illinois. • There were 48 tornadoes reported in Illinois during 2014, which resulted in two injuries and nearly $5 million in damage to homes and crops.

Above: Ray and Betty Kramer talk with an off-camera reporter after surviving the April 9 tornado in Fairdale, Ill. The couple had to flee their car and take shelter in a nearby restaurant. Left: Insulation blooms pink amidst debris scattered in the yard of a Fairdale home following the tornado that blasted the area on April 9. TERRY ALBY Hi-Liter

Members of the Diedrich farm family are (from left) Samuel, Josh, John, Valerie, Justin, Richard, Sandy, Philip, Kim, Kyle, Abby and Shannon. The family’s best practices got them an appearance on a farm television show after Oberweis dairy recommended them.

Farm fame

STAFF WRITER

Philip Diedrich knows the names of all 130 cows on his farm situated on Richmond Road in Twin Lakes, Wis. “We are real personal with our animals,” Diedrich said. “They are kind of like family.” The Diedrich family does what it can to keep the cows happy. All 325 acres are farmed in order to provide high-quality food for the cattle. “Our cows get fed a better diet than what we eat as humans. Everything is computerized balanced. We just take really good care of them, they are comfortable,” Diedrich said. Because of the exceptional care the family farm provides for its cattle, the Diedrich family farm was featured on the nationally televised show “This Week in Agribusiness” on the

RFD television channel last weekend. The show was spotlighting Oberweis Dairy, and wanted to go to a farm to show where the milk comes from. Oberweis officials recommended the Diedrich farm because it is a nice, clean farm. “They wanted a farm to go to, to show how the milk goes from the cow to a glass bottle,” Diedrich said. The film crew came out to the farm about four weeks ago and shot some video and interviewed Diedrich, asking questions about what makes his farm’s milk a higher quality product than that of other farms, in order to sell to Oberweis. Diedrich explained to television reporters that happy cows produce high-quality milk. The Diedrich family was excited for the TV show to come

out, even though it would be about a month before the show would air. But on Saturday, April 4, Philip’s brother was listening to a farm show on Chicago’s WGN Radio at about 5 a.m., and heard Philip’s voice on the radio. The radio station was airing some of the interviews from the TV program. WGN Radio also posted pictures of the farm on its website. The Diedrich family farm sells its milk only to Oberweis. Oberweis has been delivering milk to homes since 1927. The company prides itself on selling high-quality milk, ice cream and dairy products. “They really focus on the quality of the milk, like they are real fussy about who they choose for farms, so you have

to meet their criteria. It’s just a lot of little things that help produce our quality product,” Diedrich said. In order to sell to Oberweis, farms must pass certain quality tests, such as bacteria level tests, Diedrich said. “We are always super low on the bacteria counts,” Diedrich said. “It’s also a matter of taking good care of the cows, feeding the cows well, and giving them extra vitamins and minerals to help them produce a higher quality product.” Those things usually earn the family the highest premiums that Oberweis pays out for the milk, he said. Philip’s wife, Kimberly, their three children, 19-yearold Abby, 16-year-old Shannon and 13-year old Kyle, also work on the farm. “We have the fourth generation coming up, hopefully, if they take over the farm some day,” Philip Diedrich said. Taking care of the cows takes a lot of time, said Philip Diedrich, who works 14 to 15 hours a day. “But I enjoy it,” he said. “I enjoy getting up in the morning and going to work. If you enjoy what you do, it’s not work.”

Diedrich’s daughters, Abby and Shannon Diedrich, have seen people buying their farm’s products while working at Richter’s Marketplace in Twin Lakes. “They think it is neat when they check people out who are buying Oberweis milk and ice cream,” Philip Diedrich said. The Diedrich farm was started about 65 years ago, when Philip Diedrich’s grandfather, Edward, bought the farm. Performance to celebrate music of Gilbert and Sullivan

Take the music of Gilbert and Sullivan, add a twist of Broadway show tunes and stir. That’s the concept behind “I’ve Got a Little Twist,” a musical revue being presented by the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.

The show’s title is a takeoff on the Gilbert and Sullivan song, “I’ve Got a Little List” from their operetta “The Mikado.” The production features six singers known for many roles with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, an organization dedicated to “giving vitality to the living legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan.” “I’ve Got a Little Twist” is where “The Mikado” meets

“The Music Man,” where the “HMS Pinafore” sets sail for “Brigadoon,” where “The Pirates of Penzance” take shore leave “On the Town.” The show also features hit Broadway show tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Lerner and Loewe, Meredith Willson and Jerry Herman. The show will be held

in the 250-seat Studio Theatre. It is produced by Albert Bergeret and David Wannen and was conceived, written and directed by David Auxier. The musical arrangements and direction are by Mark York, with technical direction by James Mills. The cast includes Sarah Caldwell Smith (soprano), Angela Christine Smith (alto), Daniel Greenwood (tenor),

Stephen Quint (comic baritone), David Wannen (bass baritone), David Auxier (baritone/master of ceremonies) and Mark York (piano). Regular tickets are $38; senior/staff/alumni tickets are $37; CLC student/teen tickets are $15; and children’s tickets are $12. A $2 per ticket JLC facility fee will be added at the time of purchase. Other fees may apply to Internet

purchases. CLC student tickets are not available for online purchase. Teen and children tickets must be purchased with adult priced tickets. For more information or to order tickets, visit www. clcillinois.edu/tickets or call (847) 543-2300 (option 5). The Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 90 minutes before performances.

JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter

Seeds of knowlege

Michele Waheed (left) and daughter, Adriana, 8, of Antioch, speak with Janet Eppers about grains and seeds native to Illinois during the Fourth Annual Eco Fair at the Antioch Elementary School, 817 Main St., on April 18. The Antioch Environmental JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter Commission sponsored the fair. Eppers is a classroom presenter for the Lake County Farm Bureau. Power goes out, relationship is on By

baby, is really sick. On these days, I like to spend time with them, if possible. I’ve dubbed it empathy illness. Whenever someone in the house is sick, I lie low and keep him or her company, sometimes for just a small part of the day. Even if we don’t talk. It’s time together, and that is something. Today, though, I am busy. My tasks more than

fill my plate and there isn’t anything I can put off until tomorrow. So I sit at the computer and type. He is in the next room watching a movie. Resting. No complaints. The couch next to him is empty. I make him lunch and serve it on the tray we use when we are sick. Eating on the couch is reserved for those times when coming to the kitchen table isn’t practical – for those times when we are really sick, not just in need of a sick day. I refill his juice cup. Put ice in to make it nice and cold – so it soothes his sore throat. And I keep working. I am having success and

making headway on my tasks. It is looking as though I may get everything done by the end of the day. And, in a literal flash, the power goes out. Completely. We are without Internet, TV – even a hard line. I can’t run the dishwasher or throw in a load of laundry. My work on the computer isn’t lost but is inaccessible without power. I don’t even have a printed draft I can sit and review. I’m a little irritated at the interruption. My son on the couch, for his own part, is concerned, but not with what concerns me. What’s happening, he wonders. The lights and TV turned off. It looks dark over at the neighbor’s

Dear W.C., Could you please help a friend of mine? She is going through a very tough time. She was diagnosed with Lyme disease after many tests and several doctors. Her fatigue, joint pain and brain fog make it impossible for her to work. She has applied for disability but is waiting on a decision. Until then she and her two children do not have money for rent, utilities or food. I have helped as much as my limited income will allow. No one understands how serious her symptoms are. She was a waitress but can no longer handle the long hours on her feet. Her mother lives out of state but has offered to help her with the children while she goes through treatment. Neither of them have the money to move or even get her out of her lease. Could you please help my friend? She is not getting better and seems to be getting worse every day.

He wonders what we would do if the power went out indefinitely. Does our reliance make us vulnerable? How many batteries would it take to power up the TV? Thoughtful thoughts. We talk. And I realize this little break in my day, sitting with my youngest – who happens to be home sick – is exactly what my busy schedule needed. Just what we needed. Together. Because amidst the noise and chaos and technology that permeates our lives,

• Time is now

what we have – when it comes down to it – is each other. And, although we aren’t cognizant of this on an every-moment or even everyday basis, it’s nice to know my young, pluggedin, social-media-savvy, appladen son can understand the concept when needed. And it is even nicer that in quiet times he can talk to his mom. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She welcomes having readers follow her column on the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

Her car is not reliable enough to make the trip here and back. I don’t know how I would get this apartment packed and on a truck when I can barely walk to my door.” The friend said, “I will help you pack up your belongings. Don’t worry we will find a way.” I asked about her lease for her apartment. It did not expire for another four months. I told her I would talk to her landlord if she would like to sublet the apartment and move to her mother’s. I could see the apartment was well cared for. The mother had done some painting and decorating when she had been healthy. Her rent was very reasonable and I knew of a family that desperately needed an apartment in the area. The woman was very happy to hear this but then asked, “But how will I get all this stuff moved?”

(Continued from page 9)

I then told her about our group of volunteers that would love to help her with this task. She looked skeptical. “You mean to tell me there are people that would volunteer to pack my apartment?” she asked. I told her there were. I asked to speak with her mother as I wanted to make sure this arrangement would work for her too. The woman gave me her phone number, and I called her right then. There was no use going any further with coordinating volunteers, subletting her apartment and getting a moving truck if the mother was not able or willing to have her move in. The mother asked twice who I was and when I explained she said, “I didn’t know there was a charity like yours that could help.” I gave her information about all we do and then

approached the subject of her daughter moving in. The mother said, “I have been doing nothing but worrying about my daughter and grandchildren and thinking about getting them here to care for. I am retired and have the time to take care of her. What I don’t have is the money to get her here. My car is very old and will not make the trip. I still live in the house she grew up in and there is plenty of room for her and the children. I have even gotten all the information on transferring the children into the schools here.” I could see she was definitely on board with us getting the daughter and grandchildren moved in. I said, “How would you feel if we got everything set up to move your daughter next week? Would you be ready for them?” I heard her voice catch as she said, “If you could do that for them I could

be ready tomorrow.” After speaking to the landlord, bringing her rent up to date, paying her overdue utilities and getting the sublet arranged, the volunteers stepped in. The friend had almost everything packed by the time they arrived. In that time the friend also did all the grocery shopping and cooking, delivering hot meals every day and even helping get the children to the school bus in the morning. The woman did not have to do anything other than rest up for her move. The woman’s mother took care of school transfers and even finding new medical care. The Time Is Now to Help and all of you together made this possible. Before we knew it, moving day was here. I arrived to

• Time is now find a small trailer loaded with the few belongings worth moving. When the mother had heard the people subletting her apartment were presently homeless and living in a motel, she had generously given some of her furniture and household necessities to them. She said, “I am not the only person sick and struggling right now. There are many people you could be helping other than me and my children. I am so grateful for everything you have done to help us. I don’t know how we would have survived if you did not come to our aid. The least I can do is pay some of it forward.” I thanked her and helped her walk to the car. Her friend was following with her car and a volunteer had offered to drive the trailer to her mother’s. I gave the mother and the two children a hug goodbye. The mother, children, the

(Continued from page 10) volunteer, friend and I all joined hands and said a prayer for safe travels and health. One more hug and they were on their way. I heard from the woman’s mother several weeks later. The woman’s disability had finally been approved. This would help with the household expenses and food. They were doing much better with the mother’s help. The woman was seeing a different doctor with a new plan of treatment. The children were enrolled in their new school and had told their grandmother how much they loved it. The mother said, “Please tell everyone at The Time Is Now to Help how grateful I am for their help. We could never have done this without you. My daughter was so weak when she got here. I don’t know how she was even caring for the children on her own. Thank God you were there. I am so very grateful to

all of you…” I could hear she was crying. I have seen and heard many tears of gratitude from our fellow creations over the years. It still brings tears to my own eyes knowing how we have made such a positive change in people’s lives. It is a feeling I would like to share with every one of you. We truly are a group of caring and sharing individuals who come together to make The Time Is Now to Help. Thank you for your part in making our charity works a success. We are getting close to matching the Barnabas $55,000 matching grant. Thank you for your generous support. Let us continue together to make this matching grant a success for those in desperate need. Please remember every dollar you donate at this time will be matched by the Barnabas

$55,000 matching grant, not only doubling your donation but also doubling your poverty assistance. The children, the handicapped, the elderly, those that cannot fend for themselves, those living in desperate need will be crying happy tears of relief thanks to all of you and The Time Is Now to Help working together to provide poverty relief to those most in need in our communities. Thank you and God bless you. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: Together we make a big difference. Make checks payable to The Time Is Now to Help, P.O.

All telecommunicators undergo a training regimen in the use of state-of-the-art CAD, mapping and communication technologies. Continuing education is provided to keep pace with changes in technology. The introduction of GEOLINKS and enhanced 911 telephone system provide mapping tools with the ability to pinpoint cell phone locations (depending on the cellular provider), enhancing the ability to track both victims and offenders. In early 2015, the renovation of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Emergency 911 Communications Center was completed. The eight-

week construction project encompassed every information, communication and building system within the dispatch center. The redesigned Watson dispatch workstations are designed to allow telecommunicators the option to sit or stand while working. Radio and telephone touch-screens use adjustable mounts created to extend and swivel within reach of every telecommunicator, according to the sheriff’s office. Smart lights will soon be installed at each workstation alerting co-workers when a telecommunicator needs assistance or is occupied. An elevated media wall was also installed with large screen monitors, providing access to the Lake County traffic cameras, building security cameras, and the Weather Channel. The completed project was designed to update a nearly 15 yearold system and layout.

The Lake County Board recently passed a resolution honoring the county’s public safety telecommunications professionals as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week. The professionals employed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office are the county’s first-line of safety as they answer the many 911 calls received at the county’s 911 Communications Center. In fact, the 27 staff members receive more than 200,000 calls per year, according to the Sheriff’s Office. “Quietly, behind the scenes, telecommunications personnel are the first response to a call for help and the link between the public and first responders,” Sheriff Mark Curran, Jr. said.

Two arrested for heroin possession A traffic stop on April 13, near the intersection of Elm Street and Riverside Drive, McHenry, ended in arrest for Dustin B. Dodge, 34, of Island Lake, and Dale M. Hoagland, 32, of McHenry. According to officials with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office both were arrested on multiple drug charges and Dodge was additionally charged with driving with a suspended license. The Sheriff’s Office Intelligence Led Policing Unit initiated the traffic stop. Sheriff’s deputies obtained consent to search the vehicle and allegedly recovered 25 grams of raw heroin hidden in a concealed

compartment. The Sheriff’s Office estimates the street value of the heroin seized to be approximately $5,000. Dodge was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park, unlawful possession of controlled substance, and driving while license suspended. Hoagland was charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park and unlawful possession of controlled substance. Bond had been set at $200,000 prior to an April 16 court date.

Dog flu concerns county officials Rabies vaccination clinic postponed for fears of spreading disease has since died, another dog is suspected to have the illness and test results are pending on the third animal. Pet owners are cautioned to keep their dogs away from dog parks and from kenneling animals to reduce the spread of the virus. A fact sheet about canine influenza can be found on the American Veterinary Medical Association website, www.avma.org. According to a press release issued by Cornell University researchers, there is no evidence that the H3N2 subtype can be transmitted to people. However, it apparent-

ly has caused infection and respiratory illness in cats. Anyone with concerns about their pet’s health, or whose pet is showing symptoms of canine influenza, should contact their veterinarian. Symptoms of the disease may include a soft, moist cough or dry cough similar to that induced by kennel cough; discharge from the nose or eyes; sneezing; lethargy; lowgrade fever; and loss of appetite. For more information, contact McHenry County Animal Control at (815) 459-6222 or www.mcdh.info.
