Lions come to the rescue Two local stores Club donates funds to busted in sting purchase stair chairs
Businesses targeted in alcohol sales check
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
There was some roaring going on at Antioch Fire station 1 on March 31 when some Antioch Lions Club members gathered to celebrate the new equipment purchased with a $5,600 donation from the club. The department purchased two Stryker Stair-PRO stair chairs to replace two of the four stair chairs the department has been using. Those devices are metal with vinyl covers and a support a maximum weight of 350 pounds. The Stair-PRO can handle a maximum of 500 pounds and has many additional safety features. The new stair chairs are equipped with a track – like a bulldozer – so the chair can go down stairs without lifting. This creates less physical stress and risk of injury to emergency personnel. Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon said it saves by reducing worker’s compensation costs. “We pay about $100,000 a year,” he said, “and since we will use these stair chairs, we will receive an 8 percent credit, or a savings of $8,000.” Firefighter/paramedic Francisco Contreras-Gomez and firefighter/EMT Nick Godin recently gave a demonstration of how the device works and showed how the safety features of footrests and straps hold patients safely on the chair while they are moved. The safety straps allow the patient to feel secure on the chair and prevent a patient not only from falling but also from accidently striking out and hitting or kicking a rescue worker. The adjustable handles and built-in descent control allow operators to safely help patients down any type of stair with ease.

Antioch and Ingleside businesses were among the three retailers who illegally sold alcohol to minors during a recent round of compliance checks conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police Investigators. Of the 68 businesses checked throughout Lake County, three were found to be in violation by selling alcohol to underage custom-
ers. The following businesses, and cited employees, were found in violation of state law: • Rosko’s Citgo, 41452 Green Bay Rd., Wadsworth. Cited was Allison Hood, 41, of Wadsworth. • Jack Food Mart, 25238 Rt. 173, unincorporated Antioch. Cited was Imtiaz Kahn, 41, of Antioch. • Roy’s Long Lake Inn, 25368 Main St., Ingleside. Cited was Barbara Gaulke, 52, of Ingleside. All persons listed were issued a citation and released at the scene. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Fox Lake to host boating safety course
GAIL PECKLER-DZIKI Hi-Liter
Antioch firefighter/paramedic Francisco Contreras-Gomez demonstrates how the safety straps and foot rest keeps patients and rescue workers safe while firefighter/EMT Nick Godin explains how the adjustable handles and track make it easier and safer to transport patients in the Stryker stair chairs the fire department purchased with a donation from the Antioch Lions Club.
Certified instructors with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will conduct a boating safety course on April 18. The class will be held at the Fox Lake Community Center, 23 South St., Fox Lake, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The course covers the basics of boating safety, equipment and requirements, navigation, motorboat registration and titling, emergency measures and the federal and state boating laws. Upon completion of the course and final examination,
participants will receive a Certificate of Competency. The course is for students ages 12 and older. Participants should bring a lunch and drink. Registration is required and minimum enrollment of 12 is needed or the course may be canceled. Admission is $40 for adults and children. For more information, or to request a registration form, visit www.foxlake.org/calendar.aspx, call (847) 5873944, or e-mail serafina@ foxlake.org.

Changing behaviors Jendusa-Nicolai joined the Women’s Resource Center in holding a vigil for Quintero-Montoya in Burlington last week. “You can build so many shelters, and you can have so many advocates, and you can counsel, counsel, counsel,” Jendusa-Nicolai said. “But if that perpetrator doesn’t change his behavior, we’re still going to have this issue. “What we need to focus on (is) getting these people not to be perpetrators,” she added. Education is key, she said. She’s taken the time to talk to
middle school and high school students about dating violence, discussing the cycles of violence as well as low self-esteem leading to the abuse. “This is not how we treat people,” Jendusa-Nicolai said about the lesson she teaches. “We need to build people’s self-esteem.” Strides have been made, though. “We have more people getting out of these situations, getting into shelters,” she said. That effort is taking another step forward. The Women’s Resource Center is working to open a Western Racine County shelter in Dover – at the former Dover School. WRC Executive Director Cherie Griffin confirmed last week that negotiations for the building have begun, and Schmaling and Jendusa-Nicolai both mentioned fundraising for that shelter coming in the next two months. Schmaling called Quintero-Montoya’s death a tragedy. He also pointed out that if someone is “bent on evil,” the system might not be able to stop that person. But the work that is being done – he is also on the board of directors for the Women’s Resource Center – helps. “If we can prevent even one situation from turning deadly, this is all for good,” he said. “We are doing everything within our abilities to keep victims of domestic violence safe.”

Dedicated to help Jendusa-Nicolai has dedicated a great deal of time since to help alleviate the issues surrounding domestic violence. Part of the problem, she said, was that when she was almost killed by her ex-husband, the punishments were too light. “If the punishment is too light, people will continue to get worse and worse,” said Jendusa-Nicolai, who was beaten by her ex-husband for years before she fled, got a divorce and remarried. “It’s just like a kid,” she added. “If you’re grounded for five minutes … you’re going to try to push the envelope further.” Since then, she and Schmaling have worked almost handin-hand to try to change the laws, including beefing up restraining order laws, Jendusa-Nicolai said. For example, people with a
restraining order against them have to turn in weapons to law enforcement officials within 48 hours – or face arrest. GPS monitoring bracelets can also be used to track the effectiveness of restraining orders. “That’s been Teri’s mission, to reach out to as many victims as possible … to give them tools to get out of an abusive relationship,” Schmaling said. Jendusa-Nicolai also said, though, that Schmaling’s dedication to the cause has helped. ‘I think we are so fortunate to have, in Racine County, to have a sheriff and detectives who are really concerned about this problem,” she explained. “I think we’re really blessed to have men and women on our team. We’re really blessed to have some good judges in Racine County, too.”
COUPON
said about a recent conversation with Jendusa-Nicolai, about how each link in the case led to her being found and rescued. “If any one of those links had not fallen in place, we would not have the same result that we do, and that is Teri being alive. “She is a very lucky, very fortunate and very blessed individual to be alive,” he added. “And she clearly knows that, by virtue of the work she’s been doing.”

When a Burlington area resident was murdered in an apparent domestic violence incident March 22, it came about a day after the anniversary of one of the most notorious domestic violence incidents in the state. Burlington resident Francisca Quintero-Montoya died last week, after her husband allegedly stabbed her three times with a screwdriver at an in Elk Grove, Ill., hospital. Her estranged husband has since been charged with murder. The incident came less than 24 hours after a movie about the plight of Teri Jendusa-Nicolai aired on television. Jendusa-Nicolai, who lived in the Town of Norway, survived a more-than 20-hour long ordeal at the hands of her ex-husband in 2004. She was beaten severely, then stuffed in an empty garbage can and left to die in a storage facility in Illinois. While the incident stretched over two days, the movie that aired on March 21, “In An Instant,” on ABC lasted about two hours. Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling, who was involved in the case, said those two hours did a solid job of recounting the tale. But he also acknowledged how lucky Jendusa-Nicolai had been. “We discussed just how fortunate she was,” Schmaling

Service by the truckload Rotary Club supports food pantry in a big way
The Antioch Rotary Club bought, delivered and unloaded a truckload of food for the Open Arms Mission Food Pantry of Antioch on March 24. The donation, which has become an annual event, pays for approximately one month’s supply of food purchased by the food pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. According to Mary Therese Schmidt, of Open Arms, the load of food will
support the 560 families that rely on the food pantry monthly for staples. Mike Schwert, Rotary treasurer, presented a check for $2,000 to Schmidt as other Rotarians helped unload the 53-foot semitrailer truck. On hand to assist with the unloading were Rotarians Matt Tabar, club secretary, and Jim Menzer, club service chair. Rotary Publicity Chairman Bill Landis was on hand to record the event. In addition to financial do-
nations, the club volunteers each month to distribute food and other staples to needy Antioch-Area residents. The Antioch-Lakes Interact Club, the high school Rotary student organization with members from both Lakes and Antioch High Schools, also contributes to Open Arms Mission and volunteers monthly to help with food distribution. Area residents who wish to make a donation, may send a check to the Open Arms
Mission Food Pantry, P.O. Box 79, Antioch, IL 60002. For more information, call (847) 395-0309 or check the website: Openarmsmission. com. Antioch Rotary distributes holiday food baskets to 110 to 120 area residents at Thanksgiving and Christ-
mas. Additionally, the club provides assistance to nonfor-profit groups and gives scholarships to more than 30 area high school students. The Antioch Club is also known for its exchange program of local high school students who spend a semester overseas and for the doz-
ens of high school students from other countries who come to Antioch to live with local families. The Antioch Rotary Club meets Thursdays at 7 a.m. at Dockers North in Antioch. For more information about the club, email www.antiochrotary@gmail.com.

The sheriff’s association will award 60 scholarships statewide. For scholarship consideration local students must submit applications to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 25 S. The time is now to help
Mother struggles after husband’s death Dear W.C., My sister is having a very hard time right now. Her husband of 10 years passed away unexpectedly in a car accident a few months ago and left her destitute. His funeral on top of the many debts and bills he left her with is overwhelming. She is devastated from her loss. She has two children she is doing her best to care for and help through their grief too. Could you please call or visit my sister? Our family is just scraping by each month and in no position to offer any financial help. I do help watch her children and have shared as many meals as I can afford. I have heard you talk about tough times and living in poverty. That is exactly what my sister is going through right now. Dear readers, I called the woman to set up a time to visit. She asked me who I was and when I answered her, she said, “Oh, you’re that man that helps people. I read about you in the newspaper.” I answered, “I heard from your sister that you are going through some difficult times. She wrote to me in your behalf. She would like to set up a time we can all sit down and talk about your situation. Would you be willing to do that?” She replied, “It would be wonderful if we could all talk. She is right. ‘Sprinkle a little magic’
BY
ANNE TRAUTNER STAFF WRITER
he sparkly dresses and elegant hairstyles were just what 9-year-old Camyle Davis expected when she signed up to compete in a beauty pageant on March 7. But she was intrigued watching the adult contestants as they participated in the interview portion of the Mrs. Wisconsin Pageant. “I was hearing all the ladies talk about their community service, and I was kind of confused about it,” Camyle said. So Camyle’s mother, Courtney Davis, explained that being beautiful is more than wearing a pretty dress and fancy makeup. Real beauty is also about helping others, she said. Camyle decided she wanted to do something to help those in need. So, with her mom’s help, Camyle started doing what she can. She is sewing, baking and collecting whatever she can to help area organizations, and is inspiring others along the way.
Getting started Camyle, who is in third
grade, performed random acts of kindness with her homeschooling group for Christmas. But she had never participated in any other formal community service project. To find out what was available, Camyle’s mother contacted local organizations, but kept getting stonewalled because Camyle was too young to participate in ongoing programs. “A lot of organizations, for liability, said that she has to be 14,” Courtney Davis said. So Camyle began doing what she could. She decided she wanted to help Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Ronald McDonald House and Lakeland Animal Shelter in Elkhorn. So far, she has made 12 dog and cat beds for Lakeland Animal Shelter, as well as countless treats for animals there. She has collected cat food and collars, and plans to make toys for the sheltered animals. She is donating books and collecting pop tops (soda tabs) to support the Ronald McDonald House, and plans to make burp cloths and baby blankets for newborns there. With her mother’s help, Camyle made 40 headbands

The Davis’ modest home in Burlington, where Camyle lives with her parents, five brothers and three sisters, is filling up with all of Camyle’s projects. “Our bedroom is full of pop tops, wherever you look, really,” Courtney Davis said.
Encouraging others With a motto of “sprinkle a little magic,” Camyle is hoping to encourage others to help others. “That is what I would like: more people helping,” Camyle said. Some already have joined Camyle’s cause. People have donated ribbon, cat food, collars and pop tops. “One gentleman texted my mom and said, ‘I have a few pop tops for you,’” Camyle said. The man gave Camyle about 37 pounds of pop tops that he had been collecting for the Ronald McDonald House because his 4-year-old daughter was in the hospital waiting for a heart transplant, Courtney Davis said. To publicize her efforts, Courtney Davis started a Facebook page for Camyle and entitled it, “Where-MagicHappens.” In less than a month, the page drew 286 followers from all over the world, including Russia and South Africa. “It has been very exciting,” Courtney Davis said. “Our goal is to get more kids involved, until they reach the age of 14
when they can be more in the organization.” At home, Camyle is setting an example for her eight siblings, who range in age from 4 months to 13 years. Some of the other families who are part of the Davis’ homeschooling group may join in the adventure in May, Courtney Davis said. “I’m actually kind of wondering to see if the kids at Children’s Hospital would help, when they are not sick,” Camyle said. “I think they can maybe kind of help me along.”
Future
Camyle did not win the beauty pageant in March, but Courtney Davis is grateful for the experience. “She took more out of it than I anticipated her to, honestly,” Courtney Davis said. “I think it helped with her confidence a little bit because you are going on stage in front of seven judges, and there are a lot of people in the audience. It was very cool.” Camyle is excited to compete in her next pageant, which will be held in Wisconsin Dells in August. She is looking forward to getting dressed up, walking across the stage and twirling for the judges. She doesn’t know how long she will compete in beauty pageants. However, she does know how long she will work to help others. “I will keep doing it until I die,” Camyle said.

Life’s truths – part 2 Here we are, back again to gain a little insight about the truths in life we occasionally ignore, sometimes acknowledge and often stumble upon when we least expect it. Don’t you love it when truth smacks you in the face? We’ve all been there. Like the time I realized: We all live in weird families. Planning a vacation can be nearly as fun as going on one. Moms and dads do most things for a reason. Kids just don’t know which reason when. You can never have too many double A batteries. The same can be said about TV remotes, socks, underwear and friends – not necessarily in that order. Sometimes worrying about the consequences is worse than the consequences. Happiness is a choice. Lefties are forced to live in a righty world. All you have is right now. When it’s gone, you’ll never get it back. With all the dust bunnies that settle on surfaces worldwide, you’d think the earth would be getting larger.

The institute helps students take an active role in preventing alcohol and drug use among their peers. Institute participants take a “no use pledge and learn how to promote healthy lifestyles in their school. The conference teaches the value of tolerance, and students practice how to handle themselves in situations where bullying and violence may arise. The sheriff’s association will award 60 scholarships statewide. For scholarship consideration local students must submit applications to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 25 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan, by May 29.

Lions come to the rescue Club donates funds to purchase stair chairs By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Health Department announces media design contest winners Three area students were selected as winners of the McHenry County Department of Health’s annual Media Design Contest: • Caitlynn Larive, McHenry County College, billboard winner for her entry titled “Pick Your Poison – Have Them Allâ€? • Mitch Stomner, McHenry County College, Pace bus ad winner for his entry “What Are You Getting Out Of It?â€? • Alberto Arellano from Woodstock North High
