Lotus blooms brought tourists Thousands came to area to see the flowers

The Fox River begins in southern Wisconsin about 15 miles northwest of Milwaukee. It meanders 185 miles from its origin dropping 470 feet before it reaches the Illinois River. Traveling through Lake, McHenry and DuPage counties, the Fox has been a favorite recreational area for residents and visitors since the late 1800s. It is not only the Fox River that invites visitors to the area but the area known as the Chain O’ Lakes that begins just south of the Wisconsin border – near Antioch, Richmond and Fox Lake, that attracted summertime visitors to the area. The area known as the Chain O’ Lakes consists of 15 lakes connected by the Fox River and some man-made channels that have attracted visitors to the area since the late 1800s. The area was originally a summer retreat area where visitors arrived to escape the heat and poor quality air found in Chicago. Although the area was settled in the mid 1800s, it was not until the arrival of the trains that the summer populations grew. Prior to the arrival of the train, roads were few and travel by horse

and buggy along rutted trails and marshy areas was not the most enjoyable or efficient. In 1854 trains began to travel to McHenry and it became the place that visitors would arrive. Visitors would arrive in McHenry and be taken by horse and wagon to the shores of the Fox River on the other side of town. From there the passengers would travel by boat along the Fox to their destinations. The Hunter Boat Company based in McHenry built excursion boats, which made the trips up the Fox River to various resorts on Pistakee Lake and took visitors on a tour of the famous Grass Lake Lotus Beds. Fare for the boat ride up the Fox and through the Chain O’ Lakes to the Grass Lake lotus beds was 50 cents for a round trip excursion. By 1901 another train made its appearance in the Chain O’ Lakes area with a stop in Fox Lake. Here too visitors would be transported by boats sent from neighboring resorts to their accommodations for the week or the summer and also provided excursions to the Grass Lake lotus beds. even more – times every year. Science backs me up on this: Mondays are unavoidable. Research has proven that each morning when you wake up, there is a 14.2857 percent chance the day will be a Monday. You can’t argue with numbers because numbers don’t lie – and not just because they can’t talk. I for one am not going to give 14.2857 percent of my days over to melancholy. There are good things about Mondays. Sure there are. You just have to click your heels together and believe. Monday marks the beginning of the workweek. Opportunities for

accomplishing tasks and attaining goals spread out in the days ahead, waiting to be conquered. Monday is filled with possibilities. Going to work on Monday gives you a nice break from weekend chores like scrubbing toilets or cleaning out the garage. A Monday morning commute gives you a break from life, but not traffic. It can be a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future, but not send or receive text messages. You can rock out and sing loudly to the radio on your choice of station without your kids or spouse changing it on you, which can be irritating, even on a Saturday. As you are making your commute, remember to smile. It’s Monday! If you do, you’ll be ahead of the majority. According to Internet lore, most people do not smile on Monday until 11:16 a.m. and that’s probably because by that time they are anticipating lunch. Monday is a good day to put things off until tomorrow. You’ve got lots more time to complete the project with a Friday deadline, which seems a long way off on Monday. Procrastination and

Organizers planned the annual event to help fight childhood cancer and blood disorders by raising money during a fun family event. Money raised at this trout fishing event will be donated to the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer), a charitable, not-forprofit organization formed in 1976 to support research into the effective treatment and cure of childhood cancer and other related blood disorders. This event is in the memory of Cheri Amore and to celebrate Nicole Mendlik. Cheri died at the age of 17 after battling Leukemia for 14 years. Nicole, 7, continues her fight to overcome Aplastic Anemia. She was diagnosed in 2011. Through the inspiration of Cheri and Nicole, the group’s goal is to keep research moving and get the cure rate to 100 percent. The lotus flower was believed to represent rebirth in ancient times because it was seen to appear in the morning then sink into the water at night only to reappear again in daylight.

into the beds. Some of the areas were so narrow that the smaller boats could not row through without being entangled in the lotus beds. In many cases they used a technique known as “poling,” in which large poles were used as the “poler” stood and guided the boat by placing the poles on the bottom of the lake and pushing the boat ahead. The Lotus beds were a popular attraction throughout the Chain as they continued to grow in the early 1900s. During the years until the depression in the late 1920s summer visitors flocked to the area but after the market crash visitors were not as frequent, as families did not

have the money to afford a lake house or a trip to the resorts. In the 1940s as prosperity returned and returning war veterans looked for housing, growth of both year-round housing and summerhouses increased. With more boat traffic on the lakes interfering with the normal water flow the lotus beds receded until there were none left in Grass Lake. In the 1990s the lotus beds began to reappear on Grass Lake. While they will probably never return to their former beauty and size, the presence of some lotus beds on Grass Lake and other lakes in the Chain O’Lakes is a welcome sight for many.

Grass Lake while large is a very shallow lake averaging a depth of approximately 3 feet. In the late 1800s and early 1900s it was said to be a lake filled with wild rice and lotus beds. The lotus flowers are commonly known as water lilies and have been treasured for their beauty since ancient times. Buddhism and Hinduism regard the lotus as a symbol of beauty. In ancient Egypt, scholars noted that the lotus flowers opened in the morning then closed and “sank into the water” at night. They believed the blossoms underwent a rebirth in the morning when the sun rose and thus believed the lotus was the symbol of rebirth. The lotus actually emerges from the pond over a three-day period and blooms from morning to late afternoon. The Lotus flowers were found in most of the lakes along the Chain, but it was Grass Lake that became famous for them because more than 50 percent of the flowers found in all the Chain O’Lakes were concentrated there. The lotus beds were so thick that a path had to be cut through them to allow the excursion boats an opening

Museum to celebrate beer at 2016 opening

If you go… WHAT: ‘Bottles,

Barrels & Brews: McHenry County on Tap,’ The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum is hosting a breweries and taverns exhibit, spanning the 1860s through the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 WHERE: McHenry County Historical Society Museum, 6422 Main St. Union WHEN: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 29. Exhibit runs through December COST: Free admission to the opening reception, fee for craft beer tastings from local craft brewers Chain O’Lakes Brewing Co., McHenry, Crystal Lake Brewing Co., Scorched Earth Brewing Co. of Algonquin and Emmett’s Brewing Co. in West Dundee – for those 21 and older. All proceeds benefit the McHenry County Historical Society INFORMATION: Call (815) 923-2267 or visit mchenrycountyhistory. org

features historic photographs and murals, old beer bottles, beer crates, barrels and other items related to McHenry County’s historic breweries – including a re-created speakeasy dubbed the Bubbling Over. Cole Peterson, leader of the Citizen League of McHenry County during the Prohibition era, knew all too well about the goings on inside the Bubbling Over roadhouse. Located on the north side of Route 14 (then Route 19), just east of the intersection with Dunham Road, it was the most infamous speakeasy in McHenry County during Prohibition – notorious for its availability of liquor and beer, and frequented by “sporting” women and scandalous jazz music. Peterson, a Woodstock dairy farmer portrayed during the opening by local historian Craig Pfannkuche, strongly favors Prohibition. He and other League members raided and destroyed many illegal stills. That prompted a retaliatory bomb blast in 1928 by what the Sycamore “True Republican” characterized as “gangland hirelings from Chicago.” According to news accounts, the blast “tore away most of the front” of the Peterson farmhouse, located just west of the Pioneer Cemetery on South Street, and “broke windows for several blocks around.” Peterson, who was safely in the rear of the house at the time, pledged to redouble his efforts. And that will include a visit to the Bubbling Over during the evening of the McHenry County Historical Society Museum’s grand opening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Winning over converts to his cause undoubtedly will be a tall order. The evening will feature a mix-and-mingle open house featuring local craft beer tastings, live music with Tony Amber, snacks, a beer bonanza raffle basket and several new exhibits. Learn about Jacob C. Bickler’s McHenry House. Prior to 1920, the McHenry House hotel was a major

outlet for the wares of the McHenry Brewery located just west on Pearl Street. The building currently standing on the northwest corner of Pearl Street and Riverside Drive in McHenry was built in 1838. The core of the building was originally erected about where McHenry’s Veterans Park is located. For a short time before Woodstock became the county seat, the building served as the county’s first courthouse. Once the county seat was re-located to Woodstock (Centerville) in 1844, the building was moved to the west side of the original natural ford of the Fox River. Horace Long, the new owner, remodeled the building into a hotel in the 1860s and called it the “Mansion House.” It is probable that the bar at the McHenry House continued to serve liquor throughout the 1920s based on the fact that, Bickler was arrested for Prohibition violations by federal officials on Sept. 3, 1927, along with numerous other individuals. The charges against Bickler were later dismissed after the prosecution’s case was tainted by the disappearance of Alford Pouse, then McHenry County state’s attorney. Bickler retired from managing the McHenry House in 1939. The building still functions as a tavern under the name of the Town Club. Other items of interest There will be local craft brewery memorabilia and souvenirs, an interactive smell station with brewing ingredients and family-friendly root beer section where kids can try a bottle-capper and learn about the history of root beer. Ingredients in early root beers – as well as today – included sarsaparilla, sassafras root, vanilla beans and hops. For more information, visit www.gothistory.org. Zellar and Riter have been theatre collaborators for more than 15 years. Mondays go together like wine and cheese. While procrastinating on a Monday, you can take the chance to catch up on all the social media activity you missed over the weekend (during your breaks and lunch, of course). You can view photos of all the exciting things your friends did while you were home cleaning the garage. Monday rhymes with fun-day, which is a great

time to test the pairing of wine and cheese alluded to earlier (after work, of course). Sometimes the sun is shining on Monday. In fact, according to highly accurate Internet statistics, it is the least rainy day of week. That makes it a Monday sun-day, which beats out rainy days and Mondays any day of the week. Finally, Monday’s a great day to count your

blessings. When you do, I’m pretty sure you’ll decide Monday’s not so bad after all. Besides, at the end of the day you’ve only got three more to go – until Friday. Phil Spressart prepares for his April “Organ Melodies” pipe organ performance with Pat Martz standing behind at the landmark United Methodist Church, 848 Main St., in Antioch. Spressart, organist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Belvidere, is more than familiar with the UMC instrument. He is also crew leader and technician for Fabry, Inc., the Antioch company specializing in pipe organ building, restoration, and maintenance with clients across the midwest. Fabry, located a few blocks from UMC, was charged with building the organ, which the church dedicated in early 2014. Martz is an organist herself, as well as being a church historian and organizer of the monthly recital series, which features a different musician at each performance. The recitals are free and open to the public. Next month’s “Organ Melodies” performance takes place on May 14 and features UMCA music director Debbie Gillette. The large book sitting atop the organ is a Bible that had been presented to the United Methodist Church by the Ladies Aid Society on Dec. 24, 1890. It was discovered in the brick Victorian house that stood to the north of the church moments before the demolition of that structure in December 2014. The book was reintroduced to the parish at the UMC Christmas service that year, 124 years to the day it was presented to the church.
