The girls discovered the exclusive dresses each girl wore to the dance proved to be somewhat less than exclusive. The theme for the evening’s event was The Roaring Twenties. A sign of confusion

Board retroactively OKs Culver’s sign

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

The Antioch Village Board unanimously approved an electronic message board for the Culver’s Restaurant, located on Highway 173 and Deep Lake Road at its meeting on Feb. 6. The sign has been up for several months and Trustee Ed Macek pointed out that the board had no knowledge of Culver’s receiving a permit. “We (Village Board) had asked, several times that the sign be turned off, since there was no permit,” Macek said. “We were surprised to find out that Culver’s did indeed have a permit, even though the planning and zoning board had denied the request,” Macek said, “and staff told us that no such permit had been given.” Both Village Administrator Jim Keim and Director of Community Development Michael Garrigan jumped up to respond to Macek’s comment. According to Keim, Culver’s inadvertently received a permit for the sign. Representatives from Culver’s thought that the sign permit had been included with the other permits and, it was later discovered that technically, they did have the permit. Trustee Scott Pierce commented, “Ed (Macek) asked a good question. But we need to make this right and JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter

Teacher in awe on NASA mission Area educator was invited aboard a flying telescope

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Ashley Adams returned with more than just an invigorating experience as one of the newest members of the National Aeronautic Space Administration’s Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors Program last month. As program participant, she went aboard a flying telescope to soak up new knowledge to pass along to her classes at Trevor-Wilmot Consolidated School in Wisconsin, where she teaches seventh- and eighth-grade science. Adams was one of nearly two-dozen educators selected for the 2016 Ambassadors program, which is designed to improve teaching methods and inspire future learners, according to NASA. The program places a strong focus on STEM, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the NASA website adds. In preparation for the program, Adams completed a graduate credit astronomy course and observed professional astronomers gathering scientific research on the flying telescope, known as SOFIA, or Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. SOFIA, a modified Boeing 747 jetliner equipped with a 2.5-meter telescope uses seven instruments to study objects at infrared wavelengths during 10-hour overnight science missions. “The goal for SOFIA is that you bring it back into our classrooms, so my hope was to real-

ly just make my space science experience out-of-this-world amazing,” said Adams, who noted the program exceeded her expectations. “That was my thought. What I didn’t realize is all of the different connections to all 10 of my units.” “I am going to be able to (use) so (many) more connections that I never dreamed of, with all of these different (ones) that are going on,” she said, noting some are applicable to her biology, physics and chemistry units.

I pushed myself, this was a big project. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and sometimes, as a teacher, we need to push ourselves. We need to take that leap.” Passing it on Following the mission, Adams went right to work at Trevor-Wilmot, presenting her findings before a first-grade class last week. From there, she conveyed the information to students at

Wilmot Union High School and planned to share the research at a school in Genoa City. “This was some amazing research, including how we can apply it to seventh and eighth grade science,” Adams said. “I have been in first-grade classes this week – How can we apply this in first grade classes?” “It is just getting out the word of what NASA is doing – that is my job,” she added. Hovering over the landscape

Meanwhile, as Adams learned new information, she took in the sites aboard the jetliner. During some segments of Adams’ flight, she sat in the cockpit, where she recalled flying over the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, and watching the sun setting. “That is pretty incredible,” she said. “The sheer experience of that was awesome. It was really memorable.” Along with the memories of

the landscape, the experience of witnessing professional astronomers conduct research has stoked her passion for learning to new heights. “The amount of information and the people that I met were so intelligent, first off, that just to be around that knowledge and passion for a topic is invigorating,” she said. “It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I got to be a part of. “It’s amazing. It’s humbling.”

A stringent selection Adams, an Elkhorn Area High School graduate, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Following collegiate studies, Adams took a position at Madison Metropolitan School District, where she came into got to know planetarium director Geoff Holt, who eventually became her partner on the SOFIA mission. Adams, who said the selection process is strict, is still absorbing the idea NASA picked her among just 22 educators this year. “It’s really humbling they picked me – that I had the qualifications and that it was highly competitive,” said Adams, who is just one of 106 educators selected in the four-year program. “They saw something in me, and they said, ‘You’ve got COURTESY OF NASA Hi-Liter to come on this with us,’” she Geoff Holt (left), of the Madison Metropolitan School District, and Trevor-Wilmot Consolidated School teacher added. “It’s been a long pro- Ashley Adams prepare to receive instructions aboard SOFIA, NASA’s flying telescope, in Southern California. cess to get up to this point, but

Antioch uses web to promote economic development By Gail Peckler-Dziki If a business is interested in moving to Antioch, seeing numerous available sites is now just a click away. The village’s website now features an economic development tab that includes photos of vacant commercial buildings and explanations of the sites along with contact information. And since businesses follow rooftops, housing development information is also available. Need more information about the area? Check out the demographic tab to find data on total population, total

households, median age and income and other demographic facts. Antioch economic development reports from Gruen and Gruen (2013) and Retail Strategies (2016) are also on the site. The first is a baseline market analysis and economic development strategy and the second details a retail recruitment plan and other related research and analysis. The village only recently hired BDI, Business Districts, Inc., to work with downtown business owners, however, the report is not yet available. Corridor plans and traffic counts are the last two tabs

The Village of Fox Lake invites community members to take a plunge into frigid water to raise money for Special Olympics on Sunday, Feb. 26. The annual Polar Plunge event will be held beginning at 1 p.m. at Nippersink Lake from

the shores at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd., Fox Lake. This fundraiser is part of the Polar Plunge challenge during which thousands of jumpers at 21 locations across Illinois make the leap to support the Special Olympics Illinois.

with data. There is an incentive tab with no information as yet. During the meeting with downtown property owners, Community Development Director Michael Garrigan explained that as money becomes available, the village plans to work with current and future business owners to help them improve sites when needed. The East Highway 173 corridor from 2003 is on the corridor tab. Traffic counts covers Main Street and several points along Highway 173. The recently approved Economic Plan is on the website and contains more de-

tailed demographic information along with data on recent light industrial and business development sites. There is also an Economic Development newsletter that gives details regarding the Antioch Corporate Center, a commercial planned unit development that is on 16 acres at the northeast corner of Highway 173 and Deep Lake Road as well as the Buehler parcel that is across the street from Walmart and was recently annexed into the village. More details on new residential development are also available. The website can be found at www.antioch.il.gov.

Couple had history of domestic trouble

A former Chicago police officer has been charged with murdering his wife in their Spring Grove home Feb. 3. Lorin E. Volberding, 71, was being held at the McHenry County jail last week on $100,000 bail, court records show. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 9 a.m. March 3 at the McHenry County Government Center. According to several reports, Spring Grove police found the body of Elizabeth M. Volberding, 68, also a retired Chicago police officer, in the kitchen about 1:23 p.m. Feb. 3 with a gunshot wound to her neck Multiple agencies began to jointly investigate the shooting, which occurred in the couple’s home in the 10800 block of E. Riviera Drive, Spring Grove, according to a Village of Spring Grove Police Department press release. According to the release, the police department received a 911 call reference a female was possibly dead in the residence. The Spring Grove

Police Department and Spring Grove Fire Department arrived at the residence where they found Elizabeth Volberding’s body. “Preliminary investigation indicates this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public” the press release stated. The couple had a history of domestic disputes, according to police and court records. In January 2015, police responded to the home after Elizabeth Volberding reported that Lorin Volberding was barricaded inside the home with weapons. No charges were filed against Lorin Volberding following that incident. Elizabeth Volberding then got an order of protection against her husband. It expired Feb. 5, 2015, and wasn’t renewed. The incident is under investigation with the cooperation and assistance of the McHenry County Major Investigations Assistance Team, McHenry County Coroner’s Office, McHenry County States Attorney’s Office and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

‘As You Like It’ closes this weekend

William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” runs one more weekend at PM&L Theater in downtown Antioch. As adapted by director Chuck Lindas (recent PM&L directing credits include “Assassins” and “The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee”), “As You Like It” follows its heroine, Rosalind (played by Rebecca Zellar, Antioch), as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court to find safety and, eventually, love. She and her cousin, Celia (Denise Lanier, Hainesville), encounter many memorable characters in the Forest of Arden, notably the melancholy Jaques (Jerod Howard, Bristol, Wis.), who speaks many of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches.

She and her cousin, Celia (Denise Lanier, Hainesville), encounter many memorable characters in the Forest of Arden, notably the melancholy Jaques (Jerod Howard, Bristol, Wis.), who speaks many of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches.

a thief. My tiny purse has room for a wallet, phone and nothing more, especially not stolen items. My appearance practically screams lawabiding citizen. I saw him out of the corner of my eye looking at me out of the corner of his eye. I had to stifle a giggle. He thought he was so undercover. Not. Because this isn’t my first secret shopper showdown, I did my best to act suspicious. You know, to give him a sense of purpose in his job. Sometimes you’ve got to find your own fun in a situation. I picked up a flashlight, examined it and returned it to the shelf. I repeated this a few times wondering how long he’d stay in the aisle with me. He remained intact, pretending to look at golf balls. I sauntered over to the next aisle. He followed. As much as I wanted to keep the fun times going, I actually had items on my shopping list. I exited the sporting goods department and headed toward dairy. I lost him somewhere between electronics and pet food. Here’s my take on store detectives: they are an important and needed commodity. Misc. For Sale

It was an unassuming Sunday afternoon. I had to venture to the store for a few items. It was a leisurely excursion. Unlike most days, I wasn’t in a hurry and indulged in the luxury of lollygagging my way through the aisles. Picture a normal, average shopper in the camping department examining flashlights. Commonplace, ordinary and routine. That’s me. Or maybe not. I didn’t think I looked overly suspicious, but apparently I was. Either that or it was a slow day in the store detective department, because it wasn’t long before I had one following me. He was easy to spot. As obvious as a fake beard on Santa Claus, whom he sort of resembled. Ha! Without a cart! Who does that? A secret shopper, that’s who. Secret shopper is my code for store detective. They have a penchant for following me, although I’ve yet to figure out why. I’m an unassuming mom, typically wearing an unassuming black coat. I clearly have a written list of items I am looking for, making me a serious and legitimate shopper – versus

Single mother struggles to raise her daughter and sister’s children Dear W.C., I was wondering if you could help my family. I am a single mother raising my fiveyear-old daughter along with my niece and two nephews. My sister passed away from a drug overdose two months ago and I have been granted custody of her three children. Their father is nowhere to be found. I now am struggling to pay the rent, utilities and my car is too small for all of us. I lost my job because of the amount of time I had to take off work to settle my sister’s affairs and care for the children. Her children have suffered neglect and now grief over losing their mother. They are just starting to come out of their shell. I would hate to add homelessness to their already troubling lives. Please help us.

This means they should look like they are actual shoppers. This means walking with a cart. Approximately 99 percent of shoppers use carts.
