The wheels of history A look at how a dairy farm became a famous auto museum

By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

In 1940 William and Gertrude Grams purchased an old dairy farm in western Lake County. Little did they dream of the many changes that would occur on that land over the next 70 years. The Grams with their two sons, Greg, then 10 years old, and Bill, then 16, worked to make this place their home. In addition to life on the farm, Gertrude began selling items such as lamps and other used household goods out of the lower level of the dairy barn. While Gertrude was working with her antiques, Greg and Bill, like most teenage boys, were interested in cars. Not having the resources to purchase autos they began to visit neighboring farms where they found old junk cars on the grounds. The farmers were usually willing to give them the autos or old trucks that no longer worked just to get them off the property. They worked on the cars, fixing them up so that they were usable. Neighbors came to look at the cars and some wanted to purchase these automobiles. Thus the Volo Auto Museum and Antique Mall, which today covers 35 acres, was established. Grandma’s antique business continued to flourish and the boys’ autos became a museum in the 1960s.

Originally, admission was $1 to view the automobiles. By then the cars on display were not just junks from neighbor’s fields but also included some collector cars that had been purchased. For sale and spectacle Brian Grams, a third-generation family member who is director of the auto museum, shared the family story of the growth of the museum as he gave a tour of the auto museum recently. “When there were primarily collector cars, it was mostly men that made their way to the museum,” he said. “Once some Hollywood cars were added, women came with the men.” Children also became enamored with the autos as vehicles from their favorite cartoons and movies made their way into the museum. Grams first directed the tour group into the Duesenberg Room where there is a collection of the classic luxury cars elegantly displayed on imported marble floors with crystal chandeliers overhead. The Duesenbergs were first produced from 1920 to 1936 and were the cars of the very wealthy. In the late 1970s owners of the name began to manufacture them again, at a cost of $1.6 million per vehicle. They planned to manufacture 100

A sentence of life plus 150 certain pales in comparison to life plus 435 years, but it’s more than enough to satisfy law enforcement officers in Kenosha County, Wis., who struggled mightily to capture Andrew Obregon during a 22-day crime spree in the fall of 2015. Obregon, who faced 28 felony charges, accepted a plea bargain Jan. 27 in the case that captivated and terrified residents in southeast Wisconsin and northeast Illinois. Obregon, who eluded authorities for 22 days in 2015, following the Sept. 26 discovery of a van with 37-year-old Tywon Anderson’s remains in a Town of Paris cornfield, was also accused of multiple vehicle thefts and the robbery of two convenience stores that covered three total counties. “So, Andy Obregon probably won’t be coming back onto the streets for the terror he put in Kenosha and Racine County and down into Lake County,” Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said at a news conference in the wake of the plea bargain. “So this seems to be an appropriate sentencing for him and we are very thankful.” In preparation for a trial, the Kenosha County District Attorneys Office compiled more than 100 witnesses to testify, with the trial expected to last at least a few weeks, Beth stated. “It would cost tens of thousands of dollars to try this,” he said. “(The plea bargain) was a complete shock to us, we didn’t know this was going to happen,” he added. Obregon pleaded guilty

to first-degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon in Anderson’s death, which occurred on or about Sept. 19, 2015, in the City of Kenosha, along with first-degree attempted intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon stemming from an Oct. 13 incident where he beat a Brighton woman at her home in a last attempt to avoid prosecution. Additionally, Obregon pleaded guilty to one count of felony armed robbery, for when he robbed a Speedway gas station on Highway 50 at Interstate 94 in the Village of Bristol and three counts of eluding/fleeing an officer. According to the criminal complaint filed in Kenosha County Circuit Court, Obregon was accused of burglarizing Countryside MiniMart on highways C and 45, in addition to driving into cornfields in an attempt to elude authorities. Relief for authorities The plea bargain, according to Beth, lightens the burden on the officers who continually investigated the case. “Most of our department, at one point or another, during that three- to fourweek span were out on the tactical team, were out investigating, were out looking,” he said. “There were several connections that we had on this case.” “We are pleased that this is being put behind us, too,” said Beth. Sheriffs Sgt. Neil Paulsen, one of several investigators, agreed. Paulsen said in the news conference the investigation required constant communication with authorities in Lake County, Ill., where

Obregon was captured, in addition to coordinated efforts with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department. “This was a good day for the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. I don’t think the general public does not truly understand how much and hard work that goes into an investigation like this,” Paulsen said. “This probably will be the Kenosha County Sheriffs Department’s most in-depth investigation they might ever have.” Sheriffs Det. Jeff Bliss, who interviewed Obregon on three occasions at the Zion Police Department, said he’s glad there is now closure. “I think there is a sense of relief that it has come to an end,” said Bliss.

The apprehension On Oct. 13, 2015, a Brighton woman arrived to her home to find Obregon, who eventually beat her and stole her vehicle equipped with OnStar, a satellite communications service. After she called for help, Kenosha County authorities responded and located Obregon heading southbound on Highway 45, where a highspeed pursuit that stretched into to Lake County, Ill., began. When Obregon crossed the state line, Lake County authorities took over the pursuit as he headed east towards Zion, where police had requested OnStar to disable the vehicle. From there, Obregon fled on foot for about a mile until a Zion Police dog took him down during a struggle that left him with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.

Slices of life

A table becomes a family heirloom The Table has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, it was my fortress; I crawled under it, learning every crack and crevice from the underside. It seemed massive from my little girl perspective. Larger than life. The Table held a revered position in the household. It was old, older than all of us put together – and that even included my dad. It was old, but it was perfect. From the intricately carved claw feet to the highly polished, pristine ebony top with grooved edge. But all that wasn’t readily evident, because the Table was securely and doubly

wood. I use my sewing machine at the table. Once or twice the machine has slid unexpectedly and caused a scratch (or two). Perhaps the most egregious of all, for a while we used the table for ping pong. It’s about the right size and the net attached nicely to the table edges – leaving just the tiniest of marks when we removed it. Recently we had a big meal at the table and needed to pull out the extra leaves, which extend to make our large table into an enormous one. The leaves haven’t been used for homework, game night, sewing, crafts or ping pong. They’ve been protected from the elements and the rigors of my family

within the undercarriage of the table – where I used to play. And they remain as pristine as the table used to be – before we used it. The contrast between the table that is now and the leaves that were then was significant – and symbolic. Some would look at the table and conclude that we wrecked it. I don’t believe that’s true. The table (no longer uppercase) may not have the extrinsic value it had when it was untouched and unscratched. But its intrinsic worth has increased exponentially. When the table was the Table, it was beautiful but nothing more. Each scratch and glue drip and watermark signifies

family memories made around a piece of furniture that has earned its place in our dining room. Some day we may have to refinish it to bring it back to its pristine stature, but that’s OK. Because I bet my kids will remember our times around the table with a fondness that would have been hard to attain if perfection meant more to us than family. I think even my mom would agree. Streaking man charged following foot pursuit

People’s Choice exhibit is now on display

Incident also sparked hazmat investigation By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

An incident that started with reports of a half-naked man streaking through parking lots of area businesses in Antioch turned into a hazardous materials investigation in the 1200 block of Main Street Friday. The hazardous materials investigation, which came back unfounded, caused evacuation of an apartment complex and closure of Main Street Miguel A. between GascaHighway Ledesma 173 and Grimm Road, about five minutes south of Trevor, Wis., a joint press release issued by the Antioch police and fire departments states. According to the release,

the Antioch Police Department received a report of a nearly naked man, later identified as 33-year-old Miguel A. Gasca-Ledesma, running through several parking lots while carrying two naked children in the 300 block of Highway 173 at about 7 p.m. As police were en route, they learned the man, allegedly Gasca-Ledesma, was running in the middle of Highway 173 and he was still carrying both children. When officers caught up to him in the parking lot of the Best Western Plus motel, he reportedly was uncooperative with police, the release states. “After a brief struggle the subject was taken into custody,” the release reports, noting the man was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. Upon his release from the hospital, Gasca-Ledesma was charged with aggravat-

ed domestic battery, a Class 2 felony and six misdemeanor counts. The two children, ages 2 and 3, were released to their mother following evaluation at an area hospital. Meanwhile, as authorities investigated an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Main Street following the arrest, police were confronted with strong chemical odor, necessitating a hazardous materials assessment by the Antioch Fire Department. “After an investigation by the Antioch Fire Department, it was determined that the hazmat incident was unfounded,” the release states. Assisting in the investigation were the Lake Village and Grayslake fire departments. Gasca-Ledesma, who was held on a $150,000 bond, appeared in Lake County Circuit Court Monday.

Antioch Community Development Director Michael Garrigan met with about a dozen Main Street business owners on Jan 30 to explain economic development plans and ask for their ideas to promote the downtown businesses. The meeting, Garrigan explained, was part of the Village’s continued commitment for the revitalization of the village’s historic downtown. He explained that a new downtown Main Street program is in the preliminary stages. The village is working with BDI, Business Districts, Inc., and Diane Williams who was head of Main Street Illinois. She was available on Wednesday 1 to meet with downtown business owners. Garrigan said he notified business owners on his list via email, but he wasn’t sure how many of them showed up. Business owners mentioned

autos but only 63 were built because of lack of sales. Most of those sold were to museums. The Lalique crystal hood ornament that lit up was added to the 2000 model adding to its cost. “We usually have about 300 to 400 cars on site for sale,” Grams said. “The autos that are for sale are placed in the middle of the room while along the sides are displays of the museum cars that are not available for sale.” The museum cars are attractively displayed with painted backgrounds of the movies that featured the car. While there are several buildings full of automobiles, that is not all there is to peruse at the museum. If it has a motor it can be found here. Displays of outboard boat motors, tractors, and a motorized bar stool listed as the fastest bar stool in the world, are spread throughout the display.

Owners, officials discuss downtown improvement plans concerns about parking on Main Street and the need for signs that direct motorists and customers to areas where parking is longer than two hours. Suzanne Grube, proprietor of Suzanne’s Mobile Picture Framing, mentioned the need to have clear signs that tell prospective customers where free parking was available. “The parking on Main Street is two hours,” she said. “If a family wants to see a movie and have a meal, that’s not enough time.” There are other places 0 where parking is four to six hours, but Grube commented and others agreed that was confusing. She suggested that parking be free from Friday night to Sunday night. Garrigan said the Village Board could look into that. He also said the board is nearing a consensus regarding a new sign ordinance. Some business owners said they believe some parts of the new ordinance are too restrictive and don’t allow

them to advertise as needed and are not business friendly. “The village is working on the creation of a downtown sign district,” Garrigan explained, “which would encourage new historically sensitive signage for the downtown area.” Also discussed at the meeting were ways to increase foot traffic in the downtown area. Events such as Cruise Nights, Food Truck events and a Farmer’s Market located more centrally in the downtown area were discussed. Business hours were also mentioned, including the possibility that some businesses could be open later or have more consistent open hours. The idea of having businesses register and having allowable percentages of business types allowed was mentioned. Garrigan replied that some Village Board members feel very strongly about the market determining what businesses are in the village.

at about 6 p.m. May 9, 2015. Sarah A. Enders, 22, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene while still in the vehicle. An autopsy revealed Enders died from blunt chest trauma as the belted passenger of the car that struck the tree, according to the com-plaint. Dawley, who allegedly told an emergency medical technician at the scene that she didn’t know what happened because she was “too drunk,” was flown to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa where her blood-alcohol content was measured at .136 percent.

autos but only 63 were built because of lack of sales. Displays of outboard boat motors, tractors, and a motorized bar stool listed as the fastest bar stool in the world, are spread throughout the display.

residents in Western Kenosha and Racine counties during his flight from law enforcement. According to Beth, he recalled moments when residents approached him in the community. “Women in this community were carrying guns, their husbands were loading guns, because they didn’t know if Andy Obregon would break into their house.” “I think this was a case that people have talked to me about and they remembered it ever since it happened. They always bring it up,” Beth said. As Obregon awaits an April 4 sentencing hearing, Beth believes residents’ nerves have been soothed. “I think knowing that this has come to its end, I think Community closure Obregon, who drew an there will be some closure,” unprecedented $5 million he said. “I think they’ll be bond, rattled the nerves of happy with that.”

As Kenosha County authorities interviewed Obregon at the Zion police station, Lake County authorities stepped in to recover a crucial piece of evidence, according to Bliss. “It is a significant piece of the (Anderson) homicide,” Bliss said. “They went out of their way to get it.” While Bliss declined to disclose the type of evidence, he is grateful for the efforts of Illinois authorities. “We really appreciate their efforts,” Bliss said. For the victim of Obregon’s attack, she received a $5,000 reward for aiding authorities in his capture, Beth stated. “Andy Obregon thought that he had killed her,” Beth said.
