Mothers and sons were dates for the day at the second annual event, which was sponsored by the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department. Lacking outlets for recycled electronics, the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County will close its five collection sites May 1, forcing residents to find alternatives to dispose of televisions and other electronics. A quorum of the 45 board members of the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County decided the fate of the county collection program at an emergency meeting on March 3. The meeting was held at the Hainesville Village Hall. Twenty-six of the 27 municipalities present agreed to suspend the program. Linda Soto, mayor of Hainesville and SWALCO board member said, “Hainesville is opposed to further subsidizing this program. We’ve spent enough money and time. We have talked to legislators about correcting the issue legislatively and we are not encouraged by what they have said.” State law forbids collectors from charging residents to recycle and forbids recyclers from charging collectors. Recyclers are supposed to realize payment from producers who have worked a recycling fee into the price of the

product and from the sale of components. Producers have stopped paying and the prices recyclers receive for the commodities retrieved from electronic waste have dropped. So recyclers have begun charging, but for items not included in the law. The law covers computers and computer equipment, televisions and other related material. What are not covered under the law are electronic car parts, engine parts, kitchen appliances and pumps and air purifiers. “Some folks think anything with a cord is accepted for recycling,” explained SWALCO Chairman Round Lake trustee Larry Mount. “We take it because these folks are trying to do the right thing and keep electronic waste out of the landfills,” he said. SWALCO currently has a contract offer from Electron-

ic Recyclers International, Inc. for $60,000, lower than the last offer for $110,000.

Spring is in the air and the 2016 McHenry County Gardenfest is too. The event is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Route 14, in Crystal Lake. Attendees will learn about timesaving garden techniques, workhorse plant material and sustainability practices from garden consultant Kerry Ann Mendez. Mendez will present “Three Seasons of Outrageous Color from Perennials.” She has written three gardening books and has been featured in numerous magazines and won the Gold Medal from the Massachusetts Horticulture Society. Gardenfest is an annual educational event co-sponsored by McHenry County College’s Workforce and Community Development Division and the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners in McHenry County. A total of 14 other presenters – including industry experts, University of Illinois

Extension educators, Master Gardeners and MCC instructors – will cover 19 different garden-related topics offered in four, 45-minute segments. In addition, exhibitors will be selling books, seeds, garden ornaments, tools and more all day. Door prizes will also be available to attendees. Other Gardenfest topics include permaculture basics, ornamental and flowering trees, terrariums, tips for better cut-flower indoor displays, hydrangeas, heirloom vegetables, soils, edible gardens, dragonflies and damselflies, straw bale techniques, best new plants of 2016, and much more. Eggcellent Easter Adventure set to celebrate on March 24, 26 through 10 year olds. Participants must register in advance. There will be no sign up on the day of the egg hunt. The event is limited to 700 children. The Easter Bunny will be on hand to greet children at the parade and available for pictures at the egg hunt. For older children, the department is again sponsoring the Flashlight Eggstravaganza! on March 24. This event is for children ages 11-15 and requires participants to bring flashlights to look for eggs once the sun has set. Participants are required to register in advance as space is limited. Each participant has a limit of 10 eggs per wristband and each wristband costs $5. The event takes place at Centennial Park starting at 7:45 p.m. Wristbands can be purchased at the Parks and Recreation office. The Antioch Parks and Recreation department will host the annual Eggcellent Easter Adventure on March 26. The two-part event that features a parade and an egg hunt. New park will honor veterans

A Veterans Park and Memorial is planned at Waukegan National Airport that will honor veterans past and present in all branches of service. An anchor piece of the park will be an aircraft acquired from the Chanute Air Museum in Rantoul, Ill., that played a major role in development of modern military aircraft. Veterans’ organizations will help provide feedback on design. Costs have been estimated at $100,000. According to organizers, the plan is to display the aircraft, which is undergoing restoration, and to break ground on the Memorial Park in time for the Waukegan Air Show on Sept. 10.
