Hebron Hoosiers A look at how a team from a tiny town won big

Church, village settle lawsuit
Parish now has plans to expand resale shop
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
St. Ignatius Episcopal Church and the Village of Antioch have settled a legal dispute that will allow the church to continue to operate God’s Will Resale Shop. The church has agreed to install a restroom that will serve people who use the resale shop and the village has agreed to recognize the shop as a ministry rather than a commercial enterprise. The settlement comes even though officials from the church believe their stance would have held up in court. “Our attorneys assure us and showed us, by precedence of other cases that we would have won our lawsuit regarding bathrooms,” explained the Rev. Tim Squiers, of St. Ignatius Church. The issue began several years ago when St. Ignatius decided to turn a pole barn previously used for storage into a resale shop. The Village of Antioch told the church that because of zoning issues, it could not change the use of the building without approval and that a

Sheriff warns of phone scam in the area
Caller posed as process server seeking info
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning of a telephone scam targeting residents, who are asked for personal information from someone posing as a process server. According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, a resident reportedly received a phone call from a person with a Middle Eastern accent, who posed as a process server with the Sheriff’s Office. The phone call, originating from the number (815) 338-2144, asked the resident if they were at home to get issued a subpoena. “The resident reported that the caller had a Middle Eastern accent and there was a lot of background noise, similar to what a call center might generate,” the release states. “The resident hung up without providing any information.” Although the phone number displayed on caller ID is associated with the Sheriff’s Office, authorities noted new technology gives the caller an ability to manipulate phone systems.

Fire started in basement of area home Nearly a dozen agencies responded to scene
While it took nearly a dozen fire departments to douse a Feb. 10 blaze in a home in Bristol, Wis., there were no significant injuries, according to a statement released by the Bristol Fire Department. Public Information Officer Chris Medlock said the fire started sometime before 11:30 p.m., when they re-
ceived reports of a “basement fire with observed smoke and flames” at a residence in the 12000 block of 187th Avenue. In addition to the Bristol Fire Department, first to the scene were officials from the Antioch Fire Department, Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Fire and Rescue along with the Newport Township Fire Protection District. When the four agencies
arrived, including the Bristol Quint 5231 crew, they learned all the occupants had evacuated from the home. “The crew of Quint 5231 encountered sounding smoke alarms and light to moderate smoke before locating the fire in the basement bathroom,” Medlock said. After firefighters pinpointed the location, the Bristol Fire Department sought mutual aid to help
transport needed water to the fire, the statement reports. With the help of eight additional units, they put out and cleared the fire by 2:35 a.m. Saturday, Medlock reported. “The crew of 5231 was able to make a quick knockdown on the fire utilizing less than 300 gallons of water and noted minimal extension to areas surrounding the basement bathroom,” a news release states. Although there were no

who had been a semi-pro baseball player, put his players on a tight schedule. It was basketball, basketball, and more basketball. After morning farm chores, the team would meet to shoot hoops before class. Players would practice at lunchtime and after school, often returning at night to practice more after the cows were milked. Coach Ahearn was aided by assistant coach Howie Judson, a former Hebron basketball player who had gone on to become a pitcher for the White Sox before returning to Hebron to work with the team that included his two younger brothers, Paul and Phil. hoops outside the high school and local residents to put up basketball hoops wherever possible. In 1935 Hebron began to be noticed locally when it won its first county title in 11 years playing on an equal footing against some of the larger county schools. Hebron reached the state tournament for the first time in 1940, but the team lost in the first round. Still the players were considered local heroes for the success they had achieved. With the outbreak of World War II, basketball was left behind as many of these high school players became soldiers, fighting for their country. By 1948 basketball was again one of the most imEARLENE FREDERICK Hi-Liter portant activities in Hebron. significant injuries, one resident was treated for smoke inhalation but did not need transport to a hospital, the release states. Assisting at the blaze were Salem Fire and Rescue, Town of Paris, City of Kenosha, Somers Fire and Rescue, Kansasville, Union Grove-Yorkville Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Villa, Ill., and the Racine Fire Bells. “The home is anticipated to be habitable after sal-
in 1951 – but again came up short. The team, however, began to be noticed by sportswriters and large numbers of spectators came to watch little Hebron often paying premium amounts for tickets. On March 22, 1952, the team made its way to Champaign/Urbana to again play in the state championship game. This time there would be no holding the team back. The initial lineup of Paul and Phil Judson, 6 feet, 10 inches, Bill Schulz, Ken Spooner, and Don Wilbrandt opened the game and continued to play without relief through regulation and overtime winning 64-59 over Quincy. It was reported that the team bus took more than seven hours to return home as people lined the roadway and the bus often stopped for players to greet fans and sign autographs. As we enter the season known as March Madness it should be noted that the term March Madness which is now used to describe not only Illinois high school playoffs but also college playoffs, was coined on March 27, 1939, by a Central Illinois teacher, Henry V. Potter in an article written for the High School Basketball Association. As the best of the boys high school teams will gather in Peoria on March 9 to 11 for the Class 1A and 2A tournament and on March 16-18 for Class 3A and 4A, there will never be another championship game like the one in 1952, where one of the smallest schools in the state dominated over one of the largest for the state title.

bathroom had to be installed even though there was one available to the public in the church about 200 feet from the shop. One major issue in the settlement acknowledges that the resale shop is not a commercial enterprise, but a ministry. The village had been treating God’s Will as a commercial endeavor. According to the attorney for St. Ignatius, Sorin Leahu, of Mauck and Baker LLC, this contention made it a case of First Amendment rights. And that meant it would have ended up in federal court. The settlement was filed with the 19th Circuit Court of Lake County on Jan 20. It was signed by attorneys for both parties. The settlement states, “The church has provided substantial authority to the village which demonstrates that God’s Will Resale is a ministry and hence a permitted religious accessory use within the meaning of the Antioch Zoning Code.” Twenty cases and statutes supporting the church’s contention are included in the document.

considerable expense for the church and, to a lesser degree, the village. St. Ignatius had already spent more than $5,000 in legal costs – funds donated by parishioners and gathered from the proceeds of God’s Will. That money could have gone to further church ministries and to aid the needy in the community, according to church officials. “To continue in court,” Squiers said, “it could have cost us up to $100,000. Our vestry decided not to spend money that way.” The other consideration was how much it would have cost the taxpayers. “We don’t believe it right to waste tax money that way,” Squiers said. The village, however, pays attorney Robert Long of Daniels, Long and Pinsel, LLC, $20,000 each month to cover all legal services. St. Ignatius decided to put in the bathroom and a water fountain. That proposition is costing about $25,000. Since God’s Will Resale shop has outgrown its confines, the church is taking this opportunity to add on a 40foot by 40-foot section that Expensive legal battle will house the restrooms and In the end, the settlement have additional space to sort is a pragmatic approach to a and display items. battle that would have led to “Everyone wants to send
things here,” Squiers said. Bonnie Adriansen, lead minister of God’s Will Resale Shop, said, “We are out of room. The additional space will give us room to sort and store items and better display those that are available.” St. Ignatius is now trying to determine whether it is required to install one bathroom or two – one for males and one for females. Squiers said he has a call into Antioch Economic Development Director Mike Garrigan. “I was told he would tell me what the church needs to do.”
Improvement fund St. Ignatius has begun a plan to establish a capital improvement fund for the addition and bathroom project. There have been several congregational meetings. Donations from the public will be welcomed. “God’s Will not only provides goods to shoppers at great prices, but also gives items free to those in need,” explained Adriansen. “We are here to help the community. Money raised in the shop also helps funds other St. Ignatius ministries.” Adriansen can be reached at (847) 612-6986 for more information to donate funds, goods or volunteer is the shop.

The AED machines, in addition to Crisis Intervention Training, gives deputies a crucial life-saving device, the release states. “The purchase of the automatic external defibrillators will allow for every deputy working to have an AED in their squad car,” the release states. “Many times, deputies arrive on scene pri-
or to fire and EMS and this will allow them to initiate life-saving measures sooner if they are warranted.” For Crisis Intervention training, officers also receive 40 hours of specialized instruction on recognizing and interacting with people who have a mental illness as part of a statewide program. “My most sincere thanks
to the McHenry County Community Foundation for their assistance in these two critical tasks,” Sheriff Bill Prim said in announcing the grant. “It would be difficult to identify areas where financial assistance would as easily and directly translate into improvement of the health and welfare of our county.”

The best difficult job – ever By
JILL PERTLER Columnist
they cry. You run to hold them and rock them and realize you are crying too. It is hard when they walk up the steps of the kindergarten bus for the first time – with a backpack nearly as big as they are, and you stand on the sidewalk watching, wishing you could grab them and bring them home, but knowing you can’t and shouldn’t. It is hard when they miss

the bus or catch a cold. It is hard when they are the first dropped from the roster or the last picked for kick ball. It is hard watching them struggle, even though you understand struggles are a necessary part of life. It is hard helping them with homework after about third grade – especially in the subjects of math, English, social studies, science, geography, history and any foreign language. It is hard when they make mistakes and the best thing for you to do is not rescue them, because that would be the easy way out and would hurt them in the long run. It is hard when their friends become smarter than you – or so they think. It is hard on their first day of high school, because when
you go to high school you are almost a grown up and you never thought they’d ever be that old. It is hard the first time they back down the driveway in the family vehicle with a brandnew driver’s license in their pocket. On second thought, that’s not hard; it’s terrifying. It is hard when they are out late past your normally wimpy parental bedtime and you try to wait up but your eyelids droop and you fall asleep despite your best efforts because you are tired. It is hard on the last first day of high school because last first days are mostly always hard. It is hard on the final last day of high school because this means they are no longer almost a grown up, but a fullfledged one and that is even more terrifying then having

smelled of diapers and baby wipes. It is hard, this role – this gig, this calling – that we love nearly as much as life itself. This mom and pop job, which defines us and is one of the best things ever to come into our small corner of the world. It is hard, caring so much, loving so deeply. Parenthood is hard. But is it good. Like night and day Two lawmakers reconsider daylight saving proposal
CORRESPONDENT
Expect daylight saving time to remain firmly entrenched in Wisconsin, with potential for the measure to become permanent, according to State Rep. Samantha Kerkman (R - Salem). Originally, Kerkman and Rep. Michael Schraa (R - Oshkosh) had proposed legislation to eliminate daylight saving time in a press release issued Feb. 10. But, after both legislators received considerable feedback on the initial proposal, they changed course on Feb. 17. “I received many contacts from constituents on both sides of the issue,” Kerkman states in an email to the Westosha Report. “Based on what Representative Schraa and I saw in the comments we felt that we should adjust the bill.” The comments pertained to social media feedback, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Feb. 17, when Rep.
Schraa said he also received responses from family members. “Relatives are calling me and texting me saying, ‘What the heck are you doing? Don’t take away my hour of sunlight,’” Schraa told the Press-Gazette. The Press-Gazette reported a 3-to-1 ratio against the original proposal. In the Feb. 10 press release, the plan known as the Sunshine Protection Act, cited health concerns, including sleep patterns and children’s safety. As cosponsors of the bill, they noted a cardiology study conducted at the University of Colorado in Denver, where they indicated a 25 percent increase in the risk of heart attacks the Monday after daylight saving time. Additionally, the legislators pointed to proposals to eliminate daylight saving time in other states, including Michigan and Iowa and in 2015, Minnesota had a similar bill. The release reports the states of Arizona and Hawaii
