Preston Jones, 5, and Megan Durkin, 8, get a bit of horticultural wisdom from Lori DuPont on the proper methods needed to transplant delicate tomato seedlings during the Fifth Annual Eco Fair at Antioch Elementary School, 817 Main St., on Saturday. DuPont is a florist and co-owner of the Floral Acres Florist, 40870 N. Highway 83 in Antioch, where she offers instruction to area gardeners who might be lacking green in their thumb. The Antioch Environmental Commission sponsored the fair, which sought to educate attendees about the environment. Children were able to participate in several hands-on exhibits. Local sheriff’s deputies early Saturday shot and killed a Florida man suspected of murdering his father and his father’s girlfriend in Kentucky. According to authorities in Kentucky and various area news reports, Gerald R. Boyes, 53, of Jacksonville, was shot as he displayed a pistol to deputies. The confrontation between Boyes and deputies from the Lake County and McHenry County sheriff’s departments occurred shortly past midnight outside of Toppers Sports Bar, 26211 Highway 173, Antioch. Area law enforcement personnel had been looking for Boyes at the request of the McCracken (Ky.) sheriff, who said he was a suspect in the murder of Gerald B. Boyes, 73, and Billie Potter, 67, last week in Paducah. The McCracken County Coroner Dan Sims concluded the cause of death for both was multiple blunt
force trauma. The murder weapon believed to have been used was recovered from the scene, according to McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden. Investigators began to close in on the younger Boyes Friday when Gerald R. detectives Boyes from Kentucky arrived at a pawnshop in Villa Park to recover a wallet that was allegedly pawned by Boyes, Hayden wrote in a news release posted on the department’s Facebook page. The wallet is believed to have belonged to Gerald Boyes Sr. Investigators noted the wallet was missing when his body was recovered April 12 following his murder. Hayden said teams of in-

Father struggles with caring for family Once we reviewed the family’s budget and I gave further suggestions, I could see if they received the home health care compensation and some assistance from all of us, they would be able to survive going forward. To help meet their immediate needs, we provided two months rent, paid their utilities up to date to prevent an upcoming disconnection, and gave them grocery gift cards. We also put them on our list waiting for a handicap-accessible vehicle. This would eliminate the man’s need to lift his wife and mother-in-law in and out of the car for medical visits and other daily needs. When I reviewed the assistance with the man, he again began to cry. His tears became sobs, and I could tell how much stress our assistance was going to remove. I made the husband promise to keep us posted on his progress with his benefits applications so they did not again risk becoming homeless and hungry. Six weeks after our caring assistance, I received a phone call from the man. He shared with me all the events over the past weeks. They were now receiving food stamps. He was also making progress on his in-home health care compensation. I asked the man how his family was and he said, “They are doing much better now that I am not so stressed. I did not realize how my feelings were affecting those I love. Now I am more positive and not so stubborn that I can’t ask for help. Even my blood pressure has come down. Thank you for all your help and direction. I don’t know what would have happened to us if I had never written that letter.” Sadly we all know what would have happened, but thanks to all of you, we prevented a loving family from the stress and pain of homelessness and hunger. God bless you for the help we provide together. The Time is Now to Help has been chosen by the Lake Geneva Restaurant Week selection committee to participate in the 2016 Charity Check program where the most voted non-profit will receive $5,000 sponsored by Lake Geneva Country Meats. The 2016 Lake Geneva Restaurant Week event will take place June 3 to 12. To learn more about the event, please visit www.

top of caring for his wife’s many medical needs and caring for an 8-year-old son. The man told me how he had been able to save a little money when he was working, but they had quickly gone through that. I asked if he had applied for food stamps and utility assistance. He said he had, but just recently. I asked why he had not applied right away and he shared his shame over not being able to provide for his family. I asked the man, “Do you not care for your wife and mother-in-law with love each day? Who bathes these women, cooks for them and lifts them in and out of bed each day? Do you not do these things?” The man began to cry and shared with me his daily tasks. Most people would break under the stress and responsibility that fall on his shoulders alone. He wiped away his tears and said, “Yes I do. I still love my wife with all my heart. I still see her inner beauty every day. There is no other woman for me.” I continued, “Well then you are providing for your family to the best of your abilities. You need to realize that your family needs more than what just you can provide right now. There are programs that will help compensate you for your home health care. This would give your family the help it needs going forward.” The man did not know he could be compensated for his home health care. After I explained this further, the man seemed to have a sense of relief wash over him.

HOSA IS A STUDENT PATHWAY TO HEALTH CAREERS By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
hen it comes to receiving quality medical care – patients are also seeking caring and compassionate physicians and other health professionals – and one national organization is creating a vision for the future. HOSA, or Health Occupations Students of America-Future Health Professionals, is a student-led organization for those who have an interest in a career in a health or medical field. Wilmot Union High School’s HOSA Chapter, fresh off a handful of state-level awards last weekend, has exemplified not only learning inside the classroom, but also out in the community. Seniors Tehya White, the chapter president, and Rebecca Alter joined the organization with a future in medical care in mind. “I joined HOSA because I have known I wanted to be a doctor since the fifth grade, so Health Occupations Students of America
just seemed like a good fit for me,” White said. Alter, who wants to pursue a career in pediatrics thought it would be a sound decision. “I want to be in the medical field and I thought it would be a good idea to be involved in HOSA,” Alter said. “You really get a jumpstart and can learn about a bunch of careers that are involved.” HOSA complements the school’s Project Lead the Way program, which offers students hands-on opportunities in the classroom. The school’s HOSA Advisor, Lena Joch, and Gina Greil teach Project Lead Way courses at Wilmot. During this academic year, the 29 HOSA students have taken part in community service projects, including contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Special Olympics. “We raised money for LLS during HOSA week by selling plastic eggs with candy and donating the profit to LLS,” Joch said. “A few students volunteered when Wilmot hosted the Special Olympics Basketball Tournament.”
Additionally, 15 of the 29 students who attended the State Leadership Conference also donated money as part of the LLS Light Walk, Joch added. The State Leadership Conference gives students an opportunity to learn from industry professionals, network with students from other schools and compete in dozens of events. “If you end up placing in the top three of your event, you get the chance to go to the International Leadership Conference with thousands of other students from around the United States and around the world,” White said. Alter garnered her second straight first-place finish in the Healthy Lifestyle category. Alter had to finish with 50 percent or better in the 50-question online exam to move to the second round. “Studying is really hard. (I) had to navigate websites, had to find facts and had to study from a book,” Alter said. In the second round, Alter created a personalized goal of exercising a minimum 60 minutes daily, weight training two to three times weekly and drinking two liters
of water daily. While Alter’s goal is geared the physical benefits of exercise, she plans on studying in the pediatric infectious disease field. “It is a lot of schooling, but I am ready for it. I really like kids and want to work with kids,” Alter said. Joch was not surprised about Alter’s interest in curbing infectious disease and microbiology and recalls a moment when Alter took a PLTW course, Medical Interventions. “There is a unit where we look at infectious diseases and follow an outbreak on a college campus,” Joch said. “The students have to determine what bacteria caused the outbreak and which student was the original source of the infection.” “I know she really enjoyed those activities,” Joch added. White finished second in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences at the State Leadership Conference. Like Alter, she needed to finish with a 50 percent or better in the knowledge test that included several subcategories - biotechnology, lab safety and infection

Board approves funding for e-recycling program After voting at an emergency meeting on March 3, to close its five remaining collection sites effective May 1, the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County Board of Directors reversed that decision at its April 14 meeting. The concern over the lack of recycling options for residents, and the need for more time to try to amend the State law prompted over 15 Lake County units of local government to donate the approximately $62,000 needed to keep the program operating for the rest of this year. “The board is in a tough
position, we are committed to recycling electronics and our residents have responded to create the most successful program in the state, but we are also faced with costs we never expected to have to pay for,” SWALCO Chairman Larry Mount, a Round Lake Beach trustee, said. “This voluntary funding provided by my village and others will keep the program running through the end of the year and the five collection sites have committed to stay open,” Mount added. “The Village of Grayslake was really the leader for this effort by starting the dis-
cussion on keeping the program going and offering a $20,000 contribution to fund it.” SWALCO Executive Director Walter Willis said. “Long term the SWALCO board will have to weigh its options for next year and beyond, we are working hard to amend the law and also to provide alternative collection options through the municipal hauling contracts in case the effort to amend the law is not successful.” The SWALCO board of directors next meeting is in June and at that time it will know whether the effort to amend the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and
Household chemical waste collection set The Village of Antioch will be hosting a Household Chemical Waste Collection event at the Public Works Department, 796 Holbek Road from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. hold batteries (lithium and rechargeable only), household cleaners, oil-based paints and paint removers, prescription and over-thecounter medicines and supplements (people and pet) – no DEA controlled substances. alkaline batteries, explosives, medical wastes, bulky asbestos-laden construction debris, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and household electronics. HCW collections sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) are for Illinois residents only. If you would like to learn more about SWALCO programs and services, call (847) 336-9340 or visit www.swalco.org.
Reuse Act was successful. If not, SWALCO will have to decide what role it will play in the long-term collection of electronics. Under the state law, local government is not required to provide collection services, but since the law was first implemented in 2010 numerous county and municipal governments have provided collection services
and residents have relied on those programs to comply with the law which bans TVs, printers, computers and 15 other devices from the landfill. For at least the remainder of the year, Lake County residents should continue to use the five collection sites located in Waukegan, Highland Park, Grayslake, Grant Township and Cuba
Township. Information on the location and hours for the collection sites can be found on the website, www. swalco.org. “SWALCO will continue to evaluate its options to sustain this very successful recycling program, and do its best to keep the public informed about the status of the program,” Willis said.

vestigators in Illinois conducted surveillance operations in the area and located a stolen Ford Flex Boyes was driving at Toppers. Boyes was seen leaving the tavern and getting into the stolen vehicle, setting up the confrontation. According to Hayden, as law enforcement officers approached, Boyes brandished a handgun and shots were fired, killing Boyes.
Hayden said the local medical examiner’s office reported finding a medication bottle on Boyes that was prescribed to his father in Kentucky. “It is believed that this also was stolen from the Reigel Lane (Ky.) home at the time of the murders,” Hayden said. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the deputy-in-
volved shooting, according to reports, and is expected to determine if Boyes fired at deputies first or pointed the gun without firing. Hayden said Boyes was also wanted on a parole violation out of Florida. He had several felony convictions for numerous armed robberies, burglaries, assaults with deadly weapons convictions, identity theft, fleeing or evading police and others.

Investigators began to close in on the younger Boyes Friday when detectives from Kentucky arrived at a pawnshop in Villa Park to recover a wallet that was allegedly pawned by Boyes, Hayden wrote in

Skills include, but are not limited to, laboratory equipment, infection control, blood typing, and laboratory solution preparation. However, courtesy of the school’s PLTW initiative, she was already adept at performing those skills. “Luckily for me, I have learned all of these skills through the Project Lead the Way program at Wilmot,” White said. “So I was already familiar with the material which helped me.” White’s classmate, Monica Dale, missed International qualifying by one place, finishing fourth in the same category. The organization’s president has participated in the State Leadership Conference for three years in different events each year. In her sophomore year, she teamed up with the club’s historian, Lindsey Dickey, in CPR/ First Aid. Last year, she participated in the Medical Reading competition, where she read from five different medical textbooks. While she did not place in her first two years, she would not trade the experience for anything, noting valuable networking opportunities. “We had a great time preparing and studying for the event, but unfortunately we did not place,” White said, referring to her sophomore year. “I did get to participate in courtesy corps, where I got to work with a

The Barbara James Service Award is given to students who have accumulated more than 50 hours of community service, with Dickey and Olsen logging 50-100 hours and Smith tabulating more than 250.
The National Leadership Conference is June 22-25 in Nashville. “Saying goodbye to high school might be easy for me, but saying good bye to HOSA and the members that became my friends and little family is going to be so much harder,” White said. “I can not wait to finish off this year with this great group of students and I am so very excited for internationals in June.”

Local library grew from humble roots By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
A library is a world of wonder. Filled with books, it takes us from our own little corner of the world to the larger world around us. As we delve into books, we are introduced to life in previous centuries and how life may be in future times. We learn about the broader world and for some of us, it instills the desire to travel the world and learn about the cultures and lives of people in those countries. Many of us have spent much of our lives tucked in a corner of the library or taking a book home to enjoy. While we think of our libraries as part of our governmental entities, most of them were founded not by an act of government but as a project of private citizens. Usually a group of local women interested in encouraging reading begin collecting books to share with others in the area. Antioch Library is one such library that was formed due to the interest of local residents looking to encourage reading in the community. The Antioch Women’s Project began in 1921 with a group of six local women, Nellie Brogan, Eleanor Hughes, Della
Mathews, Edna Warriner, Mary Walsh, and Nellie Alegler. They were joined by Alice Smith, who was later invited to join in their project to establish a library in the Village of Antioch. To fund the project, several fund-raising events were sponsored by this group, which included a candy sale held in the lobby of Percy Chinn’s theatre. This was followed by a card party held at the Howe home on Lake Catherine. While these projects helped to raise seed money for the library, the group was also aided by the donation of books from members of the community. The library has had several homes over the years, but they were all located on Main Street. The first home for the library was a space in Walter Chinn’s newspaper and magazine shop at 934 Main Street. The library was faced with its first real challenge when a scarlet fever epidemic became rampant in the area. In the 1920s, before the discovery of penicillin, scarlet fever was a serious, highly contagious disease that was often fatal. The library was forced to destroy all books in circulation for fear of spreading scarlet fever, Once again the women worked to
raise money to restock the library’s shelves. One year later, in 1922, the library moved to its second home, the second floor of Village Hall at 875 Main Street. According to the library’s website, the jail was located on the first floor and when prisoners were being held there, library patrons could “hear rattling of the jail cell’s bars by the prisoners.” In those early years, the members of the Women’s Club shared the role of librarian, a volunteer position. The village took responsibility for the library in the later 1920s, allowing for the hiring of “Miss Stanley” as the first paid librarian. The library made two more moves before it landed in its present location at 757 Main Street. First, in 1930, it was moved to the Antioch Grade School on Main and Depot streets; then to 883 Main Street in 1941. The year 1937 saw a change in the library’s funding as it was designated a township library and became financed by property taxes. This change also allowed the library to provide service to citizens of the township not just the village. A special gift from the William Schroeder family, the do-
nation of the land at 757 Main Street, brought the library to its current location. With the help of local businessmen and community volunteers, the house located on the property was transformed into the library. Twenty years later it was replaced with a new building and in 2002 an 18,000-square-foot addition more than doubled the size of the library. The original 13,000 square feet of library space was remodeled after the completion of the addition. Today the library is no longer a township library but functions as an independent library district that serves over 17.000 patrons. Over the years, the libraries of the world have changed. No longer are they just a repository of books. They offer computer labs, Wi-Fi to connect personal electronic devices, electronic services to download E-books, magazines (Zinio), or music (Freegal). While the manner in which libraries provide services has changed over the years, they are still the place to learn more about the world around us. The Antioch Library can be reached at (847) 395-0874 or www.apld.info or on Facebook for information about current programs.

The Antioch Library had several different sites in its early days. By 1930 the library moved into the Antioch Grade School, which is on the corner of Main and Depot streets.

In 1950 the William Schroeder family donated land that eventually became the current home of the Antioch library. An 18,000-square-foot addition completed in September 2002 more than doubled the size of the library, which serves more than 17,000 people in Antioch and surrounding area.
