Antioch buys land for industrial development

Portion of parcel is eyed for new DPW facility By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Lindsey Badtke orchestrates a selfie with daughters Penny, 6, (left) and Hailey, 9, during the Mother-Daughter Bingo held at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Sunday. It was the second year that bingo was the attraction for the pre-Mother’s Day social. Because of interest in the event, three separate seatings were required. Each of the attendees had an event photograph taken and then enjoyed a meal before the serious competition started. The bingo and raffle prizes were supplied by local merchants and the village.

The Village of Antioch has completed the purchase of 50 acres north of Grimm Road for industrial development and a possible public works facility. The parcel is east of Highway 83 and south of Highway 173. The purchase price was just over $1 million. The Village Board approved a resolution authorizing a contract to purchase the land from the Boylan family a year ago. In a recent telephone interview, Village Administrator Jim Keim said, “This purchase is an economic development initiative to expand the village’s tax base by private investment and increase the number of available job in the village.” The village would also like to use a portion of the land for the construction of a new public works building. “We would like to see between five and seven acres used for that purpose,” he explained.

The current public works office building is a mobile trailer approximately 50 years old. The building is near the end of its life, in a residential area and undersized. Keim said, “A new public works facility has yet to be designed, however, it should be designed to accommodate the future needs of the village for many years to come.” The rest of the parcel would be developed to encourage more businesses to locate in Antioch. Currently, this project is in the development stage. “We want to see economic development,” Keim stated, “and this way the village would control that development.” Since the village is not motivated by profit, Keim said, more attractive deals could be offered to businesses that might be interested in locating in Antioch. He also acknowledged that there was competition from nearby communities, such as

Community embraces Arbor Day

Tree plantings, other events planned

On the last Friday in April, this year April 29, Arbor Day is celebrated throughout the nation. On this day trees are planted in parks, in schoolyards, in private yards, and around municipal buildings, reminding us of the importance of trees in our world. For many, Arbor Day brings memories of tiny seedlings being distributed in school by the parks departments for students to take home and plant. These seedlings were far from what most people thought of as a tree but many carefully brought them home, planted them and diligently watered them for several weeks until they lost interest. Over time these small seedlings would wither or be clipped by the lawn mower but occasionally one would survive and grow to become a small tree. Arbor Day is the work of Julius Sterling Morton, who was born in Adams, New York on April 22, 1832. In his youth the family moved to Michigan and Morton attended the University of Michigan. After marrying in 1854,

Morton and his wife Caroline moved to the Territory of Nebraska where he became editor of the local newspaper, The Nebraska City News. He became interested in politics and served as acting governor of the Nebraska Territory. Morton also served as the third U.S. S e c r e t a r y Julius Morton of Agriculture from 1893 to 1897 under President Grover Cleveland. Morton used his position in politics and as a newspaper editor to encourage the growth of trees in Nebraska. He was dismayed by the lack of trees on the open prairies of the state. He purchased property and began to plant trees and bushes, encouraging others, through his newspaper, to do the same. At a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in Janu-

Spring Grove man dies when truck ends up in pond

Each of the attendees had an event photograph taken and then enjoyed a meal before the serious competition started. The bingo and raffle prizes were supplied by local merchants and the village.

A failure to negotiate a curve that led to a Ford F250 truck getting submerged in a Wisconsin pond cost a Spring Grove man his life in a Friday evening crash, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. The man, identified as 50-year-old Arthur Kraft was driving southbound near American Girl Brands, 12400 Fox River Road, in the Town of Randall when he lost control of his 2010 Ford F250 truck. The vehicle rolled over into a nearby pond, where it came to rest upside down. According to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Department, passing motorists came to Kraft’s aid until authorities, that included Silver Lake Rescue, arrived

shortly after 6 p.m. “Passersby worked to extricate Kraft who was apparently unresponsive,” the release stated. “Several people including arriving deputies performed CPR until area rescue units arrived to take over.” Silver Lake Rescue transported Kraft to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha where he was pronounced dead. Kraft was the sole occupant of the vehicle used for his business, KMI Building Services of River Grove, Ill. Phone calls to KMI Building Services went unreturned as of Monday morning. While authorities do not believe alcohol was involved, the cause is still under investigation, the press release said.

Food – $1,526.66 When we speak about removing the pains of poverty, hunger is usually the first one that comes to mind. If you have never felt true hunger, you cannot understand how this affects your whole life. When all children can think about is being hungry, they are not going to do well in school or other areas of life. When senior citizens cannot eat properly, they often suffer as a result of the additional medical problems they have including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many other conditions exacerbated by poor nutrition. When the disabled or veterans have unexpected car repairs or medical expenses, the first thing they cut back on is food. We together have removed this pain and replaced it with health and happiness. This was all thanks to all of you and the Family Foundation. Thank you and God bless you.

There were many more helped with first month’s rent, security deposit, overdue rent and motel rooms. We could fill page after page with the stories of those we helped thanks to the Family Foundation $30,000 matching grant and all of you. Rent and shelter – $41,708.71 This was the largest area of assistance for this matching grant. The winter months are an especially hard time to become homeless. It can be life threatening for any of our fellow creations to be living in a car any time of year, but is much more dangerous during the freezing winter months. This winter, we were able to keep many women, children, senior citizens, veterans and the disabled in their homes and apartments. For some who were already evicted, we provided safe shelter in motels. This includes a family with three children that we are continuing to counsel with job placement for the mother and finding an apartment they can afford. A woman veteran who suffers with both physical and mental scars from her years of service was given assistance to prevent her and her teenage daughter from becoming homeless. Both single mothers and single fathers were provided the assistance necessary to keep them and their children sheltered. Several single mothers were seeking help in getting on their feet after leaving abusive relationships. It was very important for both the mothers and the children to be independent from the men who were tormenting them. Now they are safe and able to get by without the constant threat of abuse. Many of our fellow creations suffer from disabilities that prevent them from earning a living. Some are waiting for disability payments to begin. Others had unexpected expenses that could not be covered by their small Social Security income. A woman in her 40s suffered a brain aneurysm that left her severely disabled with three children. While she awaited her determination for benefits we made sure they were safely housed.

God bless you and the Family Foundation donors for providing the blessing of utility assistance to the poverty stricken in our communities.

We thank God every day for your generosity that allows us to remove the pains and suffering of poverty. Area embraces Arbor Day

In

his youth the family moved to Michigan and Morton attended the University of Michigan. After marrying in 1854, Julius Morton Morton and his wife Caroline moved to the Territory of Nebraska where he became editor of the local newspaper, The Nebraska City News. He became interested in politics and served as acting governor of the Nebraska Territory. Morton also served as the third U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1893 to 1897 under President Grover Cleveland. Morton used his position in politics and as a newspaper editor to encourage the growth of trees in Nebraska. He was dismayed by the lack of trees on the open prairies of the state. He purchased property and began to plant trees and bushes, encouraging others, through his newspaper, to do the same. At a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in January 1872, Morton suggest-

ed a tree planting holiday to be called Arbor Day. The board agreed and the date of April 10, 1872, was set for the first Arbor Day. Prizes were offered for the greatest number of properly planted trees on that day. The day was so successful that an estimated 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day, The practice of celebrating Arbor Day was held in various states over the next several years. When Arbor Day was named a legal holiday in Nebraska in 1885 the date chosen was April 22 as a permanent day of observation. That day, Morton’s birthday, was chosen to honor him. The practice of planting trees and celebrating Arbor Day spread throughout the nation and today it is celebrated throughout the world. Why are trees so important? According to experts, trees help both the environment and our health. In a process called photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is converted into oxygen. The roots of the trees treat pollution by absorbing contam-

inants found in the water and soil. At times of heavy rainfall, trees also aid in reducing flooding by their ability to absorb large amounts of water. The Morton name is synonymous with trees in Illinois as Joy Morton founder of Morton Salt Company and son of Julius Sterling Morton, founded the Morton Arboretum, in Lisle. This 1,700-acre arboretum established in 1922, has 222,000 trees and plants and is the place to learn everything about trees and plants. What is special about Arbor Day? In the words of

J. Sterling Morton, “Arbor Day is not like any other holiday. Each of these (other holidays) reposes on the past while Arbor Day proposes for the future.” Those who wish to discover Arbor Day activities in their communities are encouraged to contact their local Chamber of Commerce, city hall, park district, or school district. Here are a few of the scheduled Arbor Day activities in the area: • Lake Zurich – On Saturday, April 30, families and community groups are welcome to sign up to clear the

community’s 32 parks. The day will begin with a volunteer breakfast followed by a tree-planting ceremony by the village arborist and members of the Lake Zurich Tree Commission. • Round Lake – On Saturday, April 30, the village will provide a morning event from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Police and Public Works Building, 741 Townline Rd. Free seedlings will be available. Quizzes, snacks and speakers are on the schedule. Those who plan to attend are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the local food pantry.

Pet vaccination clinic offered May 14 The Lake County Health Department Community Health Center’s Animal Care and Control Program will host a low-cost pet vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14, in Lindenhurst. The clinic provides a way for Lake County residents to keep their pets up to date with shots and rabies tags. The Animal Care and Control program is partnering with Lindenhurst Police Department for a clinic at the Lindenhurst Municipal Center, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road. Pet nail trims will be available by the 4-H for donations to support local not-for profit groups in Lake County. The 4-H Board votes on where donations are distributed. Prior donations from vaccination clinic nail trims went to Reach Rescue and Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Standard vaccine, tag and

microchip costs for the vaccination clinics are as follows: For spayed/neutered • One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag – $20 • One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper – $25 • Distemper complex only – $10 • Microchip – $15 For not spayed/neutered • One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag – $60 • One-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper – $65 • Distemper complex only – $10 • Microchip – $15 Pets will be taken on a firstcome, first-served basis. All animals brought to the clinic must be at least four-months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. Only cash will be accepted on site. Proof of spay/neuter may be required. Spring Grove man dies when truck ends up in pond A failure to negotiate a curve that led to a Ford F250 truck getting submerged in a Wisconsin pond cost a Spring Grove man his life in a Friday evening crash, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. According to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Department, passing motorists came to Kraft’s aid until authorities, that included Silver Lake Rescue, arrived shortly after 6 p.m.

• Development Salem, Wis. That community is already actively developing a business park on Highway C, west of Highway 83, in conjunction with the Kenosha Area Business Alliance. There are already a few businesses eyeing land in Antioch, Keim said, and he anticipates that ground could be broken as early as this coming fall. “The long term plan,” Keim said, “is not for the village to hold the land. We would transfer the property to private parties.” This project would include certain infrastructure

School children throughout the nation are often involved planting trees each April as Arbor Day founder J.S. Morton envisioned.

• Arbor Day

(Continued from front page)

ary 1872, Morton suggested a tree planting holiday to be called Arbor Day. According to experts, trees help both the environ-

ment and our health. In a process called photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is converted into oxygen. The roots of the trees treat pollution by absorbing contaminants found in the water and soil. In the words of J. Sterling Morton, “Arbor Day is not like any other holiday. Each of these (other holidays) reposes on the past while Arbor Day proposes for the future.” Those who wish to discover Arbor Day activities in their

communities are encouraged to contact their local Chamber of Commerce, city hall, park district, or school district. Here are a few of the scheduled Arbor Day activities in the area: • Lake Zurich – On Saturday, April 30, families and community groups are welcome to sign up to clear the community’s 32 parks.

Area embraces Arbor Day

In

his youth the family moved to Michigan and Morton attended the University of Michigan.

Slices of life

An overdue message to my neighbors Thank you and I’m sorry. I should have said this earlier – and repeated it many times over the years. To the neighbors on the left and right, kitty corner, in front and behind, and perhaps a few houses beyond that: you’ve all been infinitely patient with my brood. This morning while filling my coffee cup, I glanced out the window, which overlooks one neighbor’s yard, and noticed two errant tennis balls lingering in their grass. This elicited one of my deep, instinctive mom sighs. As far as I know my neighbors do not play tennis. My boys do. Today it was tennis balls, but on any given day

By

JILL PERTLER Columnist

any number of items could end up on the wrong side of the fence. Basketballs, soccer balls, golf balls and baseballs all have a tendency to roll outside the lines of our property limits – and are kindly tossed back or fetched by us in what is not always the most timely of manners. Thankfully the balls have always landed in the grass and not gone through a window (so far). I consider myself lucky on

that account. Not breaking a window is definitely worth a dose or two of parental gratitude. As are empty and abandoned juice pouches and candy wrappers in the hedges (she said with her best jest). I guess I can rest assured my kids are staying hydrated. On the other hand, thank you, neighbors, for putting up with empty juice pouches and candy wrappers that you did not drink or eat. I also apologize for my family’s habit of ignoring borders during raucous games of hide-n-seek and ghost in the graveyard. Oh, sure, my kids could play within the confines of our yard, but spreading the game throughout the neighborhood heightens

the experience – for the kids, but probably not the neighbors. I’m sorry if ever a lily or hosta or tomato plant has been trampled upon during a feisty round of kick the can, because I’m sure my offspring are as oblivious to the garden in your yard as they are to the one in mine. One day I will have pristine flowerbeds, but right now I am thankful during the times they unplug and play outside, the old fashioned way. I find joy in their squawks and squeals, but I realize not everyone might react this way. Thank you for tolerating the squawks and squeals. I also assume my neighbors consider it a

bonus (said with as much sarcasm as I can muster) when after a night of boisterous play, various items of apparel – flip flops, jackets and the occasional T-shirt – are scattered and discarded in yards other than our own as a heated game required the speed that can only be attained with bare feet or a bare chest. I send my deep regrets for that time (make that multiple times) some young member of my family picked apples from your tree (without asking permission to do so). I apologize and send my thanks for the apples. They made a great pie, which I did not regret. While we’re on the subject of fruit, you know

how the old saying goes: You can pick your neighbors apples, but you can’t pick your neighbors. In that regard, they are like family. You may not pick them, or they you, but you are stuck with each other for the long haul – or at least until one of you moves. So far most of my neighbors haven’t moved. I guess I’ll take that as a good sign. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright, author and member of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Appliances – $1,796.19 A senior citizen living without a refrigerator for many months was provided a new refrigerator. Can you imagine life without fresh food? Eating only canned foods is not how we want our senior citizens to live. We also provided the grandmother who is raising her grandchildren with a washing machine and dryer. Her old machines were broken and she had been carrying the many loads of laundry to a laundromat. The gift of a new washer and dryer changed the life of this grandmother as she copes with the many responsibilities of raising these young children on her own. Both these senior women cried happy tears of gratitude for these life-changing gifts. We share those tears with all of you and the Family Foundation because thanks to you we were there to help them. Medical Care – $700 Two women were provided help with their vision needs. One senior woman needed glasses as her only pair was lost and she could not afford another pair. Providing glasses for this senior woman has changed her life. She can again drive and read. She is not struggling every day to see. She can safely take her necessary prescription medications without struggling to read the label or even worse misreading and taking the wrong dose. Another working poor woman struggled with vision problems and our assistance allowed her to see an eye doctor. As a result of our assistance, this mother was able to drive and work again. Her vision problems have been resolved and her family will not become homeless or fall behind any further in their bills. We were able to care and share for these women and remove one of the pains of poverty. Thank you for making this assistance possible. Home repairs – $1,176.25 A senior woman living without hot water was given the gift of a hot water heater. How does a senior citizen live without hot water, especially in winter? This elderly woman was heating water on the stove to wash dishes and sponge bathe. She could not handle lifting too heavy of a pan of hot water so she was limited on how much she could heat up at a time. Is this how we want the senior citizens in our communities to live? The woman had lived this way for several months before she set aside her pride and asked for our help. My heart breaks over the pains she suffered until we were there to bring

Grand total – $60,000 Every penny you donated, matched by the Family

Foundation $30,000 matching grant, was used to assist the poverty stricken. Many hours were spent researching, coordinating and organizing the $60,000 in assistance provided 100 percent to the poverty stricken. We investigated every request to make sure every penny of your donation was used to provide assistance to those most in need. Our fellow Americans continue to live with the pains of poverty. Our mission continues to be to alleviate those pains of poverty for our fellow Americans in our communities. Without all of us working together and caring and sharing for our fellow creations in need many people in our communities would be forgotten. They would not have their tears of pain and suffering felt or heard. We would not know there were children, senior citizens, men and women hungry, scared and alone. Thanks to the Family Foundation and all of you, these people’s voices have been heard. We now are aware of their suffering and pain. Thanks to all of you and the Family Foundation for

supporting our mission and helping us provide this lifechanging assistance. Beds – $976 A senior woman living with her disabled son was provided new beds. The beds they were trying to sleep on were old, sagging and stained. We, together, provided beds that would improve their lives by removing back pain and sleepless nights. This is an area of assistance that again removes one of the pains of poverty. God bless all of you and the Family Foundation for the pains removed thanks to this matching grant opportunity.

our life-changing assistance. She shared with me her humiliation over never feeling clean from her sponge baths and the chills she would get washing herself in the winter months. After our assistance with the hot water heater and in several other areas, she is again going to church and visiting with her friends. She is no longer worried she will smell or too embarrassed to have people to her home. A single mother was provided help with a new furnace. The old inefficient furnace stopped working in the middle of winter and left them cold and afraid. This mother was working paycheck to paycheck and unable to pay for this lifesaving home repair. We together along with the Family Foundation $30,000 matching grant made sure these women and children did not have to suffer from lack of heat and hot water. We together removed these pains of poverty. God bless you.

Program allows students to bench bullying behaviors By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

he Buddy Bench not only raises awareness of schoolyard bullying, but can also reinforce positive behaviors in area schools. Jim Scherrer, CEO of Scherrer Construction, launched the nonprofit organization Scherrer Cares Buddy Bench Program in 2014 as a means of giving back to the community. “Due to our heavy involvement in school construction as well as personal experiences from myself and other employees, we decided to take a stand against bullying by launching the Scherrer Cares Buddy Bench Program,” Scherrer said. After the organization donated its first bench at a school in Omro, the Burlington, (Wis.)-based business reached out to local schools that include Randall Consolidated,

Lakewood School in Twin Lakes and Silver Lake’s Riverview. Both Randall and Lakewood unveiled the Buddy Bench in assemblies at their schools. Schools introduce the benches in different ways including presentations on bullying, guest speakers and student involvement. “Theater skits are done by the older students to teach the younger students how to use the Buddy Bench,” Scherrer added. Joseph Sellenheim, Director of Student Services at Randall, believes the bench is symbolic and emphasizes kindness among students. “Any time you can put something tangible in the building that helps you convey the message to students that are positive, it is a real asset to the school,” Sellenheim said. Randall fifth-grade student Allie Andersen, who is a junior representative, was part of the all-school assembly

Andersen said the buddy bench offers a place of refuge for her fellow students, and it also encourages her classmates. “I think that the Buddy Bench is a really good way to stop bullying and make people a lot happier,” Andersen said. “If you have ever been bullied, you know you can sit there and always count on someone to come and sit by you.” The bench offers bullied students an opportunity to seek help, by giving their fellow students a tool to reach out through. “I think the buddy bench is really important for kids that are being bullied and need help,” Maddy Pedersen said. “And you can go help them.” The bench can also bolster initiatives already in place, such as the Department of Public Instruction’s Positive Behavioral Intervention Support model. PBIS is a program that offers support on multiple levels to ensure behavioral success.

“We got a couple different programs. One of the goals in our school is to create a safe and positive place where students can learn and be free to branch out and meet others,” Sellenheim said. For Lakewood School, the Buddy Bench comes at the right time, matching a third trimester course for middle school children, Raider Role Models. “We have had a couple instances where students have had a tough day…and we were able to have them sit down and have another student help,” said Lakewood District Administrator Joseph Price. “It fits in with a course we are starting in the third trimester.” Additionally, the bench enhances schools’ all-inclusive mission. Bullying is most prevalent when students are isolated, officials said.

Missing woman found unharmed Lorraine Mueller, 88, of Salem, Wis., who was reported missing last April 14, was found the following morning, according to Kenosha County authorities. She was spotted near a water treatment facility by people who, in turn, notified Kenosha County sheriff’s deputies who were searching the area for her, according to a news release issued by Sgt. Dan Ruth. Mueller appeared to be uninjured, the release said. Ruth said Mueller had been transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. The Wisconsin Department of Justice issued a Silver Alert regarding Mueller at 1:55 p.m. April 14. Ac-

cording to the alert, she had last been seen about 7 a.m. Thursday. In an earlier news release, Ruth said law enforcement officials and family members had searched through the night and had ramped up efforts on the morning of April 15 with neighbors, a sheriff’s dog, and deputies on all-terrain vehicles joining in the search. Ruth said officials also considered using a helicopter to search from the air and a boat to search nearby Hooker Lake. “Area trails have been mapped and a methodical search is underway now with detectives and the Department of Aging also assisting,” Ruth said prior to Mueller being found.
