The midway shows the effects the unseasonably cold and wet weather had on attendance at the 885 Civic Club annual carnival held at the municipal parking lot, 900 Toft Ave., Antioch, on Saturday, during much of its run. Live entertainment has always held a special appeal for leisure hours and in Antioch it continues to be alive and well at the PM&L Theatre on Main Street. Let’s take a step back in time to 1914. At that time a theatre opened on Main Street named the Crystal Theatre. The theatre was small, as was the stage, the auditorium seating, and the balcony. Seating capacity was listed at 350. In spite of its small size, the theatre was popular with local residents. In 1914 vaudeville acts and other traveling professional troupes made their way through Wisconsin and northern Illinois, performing at local venues. The Crystal Theatre was one of the many stops on the traveling troupe’s circuit. The name was changed from the Crystal Theatre to the Lake Theatre in 1946 and continued to operate but no longer as a live venue but as a movie theater. After an eightyear run showing movies, the theatre closed in 1954. Betty Dowd and Ken Smouse actually founded the PM&L Theatre group in 1960 when 12 friends interested in supporting the performing arts in Antioch each donated $10 to fund the new endeavor. The group began to bring the arts to Antioch. Theatrical and musical shows and art exhibits were given to benefit various worthy community causes such as the Lake County Mental Health Group, The Antioch Women’s Club, and various other groups including various PTA groups, often using local schools for their performances. The Crystal Theatre, which had closed in 1954, remained empty until 1963 when the PM&L group was able to rent it. The letters PM& L speak to the group’s interest in the arts. The P stands for the palette of the painter, while the M represents the masque of the actor, and the L the musical lyre. After almost 20 years of renting the building, PM&L was able to purchase the space in 1982. For the most part, they used the space as it was with the addition of “elbow grease” to spiff up the space. For 20 years, the group continued to produce quality plays for the community. Then, in 2002, a $1.5 million gift enabled the group to make some much-needed renovations. The seating area was remodeled to provide more comfortable seats for patrons. The stage

was enlarged allowing the actors more room and a better view for those watching the performances. And while not as glamorous as the new stage space and seats, old electrical and plumbing lines were updated to make the theatre a safer place. When the building next door came on the market, a major fund-raising drive was launched, allowing the company to purchase the additional space. The building was named Tribute Hall and is currently used as a rehearsal space, a meeting room, and a venue to perform small shows. Concessions for performances are also sold here. “PM&L is primarily made up of volunteers from the community and surrounding areas, ranging in talents from beginner to professional theatre ex-patriots,” Rebecca Zellar, recording secretary and active member of the company, said. In addition to theatrical performances, PM&L has offered free acting workshops under the direction of Zellar and Chris Ritter who have been collaborators for the past 15 years. This summer PM&L will offer a summer camp for children from ages 7 to 14. The camp will begin on June 20.

Racine County (Wis.) Sheriff Christopher Schmaling confirmed Sunday night that there are at least two fatalities following a fire and explosion that leveled a home in the Town of Burlington, Wis., Saturday. As of Sunday evening, two bodies had been discovered in the rubble of the home at 29235 Ketterhagen Road. Family members of Craig Lambert and Kim Howe – husband and wife – said they believe both were home, along with Kim’s son, Nicholas, when the fire broke out. Schmaling confirmed the sheriff’s department believes, based on the family’s statements, that all three were home when the fire started – and when the home exploded. He also said that the fire is suspicious in nature. Kayla Lambert, Craig’s daughter, and Tamara Burgos, Howe’s daughter, both said Sunday the family’s two vehicles were at the home when the fire occurred, and that Nicholas would have been
Chief Ed Umnus said that, initially, they went to five levels of the box system for tenders (water trucks) but later ended up filling in the second and third alarms completely due to needed personnel, equipment and trucks. The Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force ended up on the scene Saturday when the fire was finally put out, and additional sheriffs department staff were on scene Sunday. At one point, SWAT team members fanned out with their rifles in hand, which Schmaling said was a precautionary measure due to the nature of the investigation. He said they and members of the various departments who were on utility vehicles were searching the area for evidence. The level of destruction, however, appeared to be making that investigation difficult. Schmaling and Umnus both said they’d never seen anything like this before. “It’s a struggle, because there’s literally nothing left to investigate,” Umnus said.

with Howe. “There’s no way,” Kayla Lambert said that the two would have been separated. Burgos, who said Sunday her mother and stepfather had argued the night before, had been waiting for a phone call from Howe to meet her for lunch or dinner. Her mother never called and Burgos put out a heartbreaking plea on Facebook Saturday afternoon after seeing the news about the explosion. “I know the first one is my stepfather and I believe the second one is my mother,” Burgos said of the two bodies that had been recovered. The third body had yet to be recovered, but Burgos said a family dog had been found dead in the home. The call regarding the fire came in at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Schmaling said that minutes later, the house exploded. Town and city of Burlington firefighters initially responded, but several different levels of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System were quickly activated. Town Fire

matched the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant and distributed those funds to those most in need, let’s keep the momentum going. Let’s keep providing miracles for even more senior citizens, the handicapped, veterans, working poor families and single mothers with children. Paul Ziegler has again been not only a great supporter of our mission but also a heartfelt friend. His heart feels for those suffering in poverty and pain. God bless all of you and Paul Ziegler for your continued support and for making the following assistance possible. Here is how all of you and the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant provided $30,000 to help those in desperate need. This is how all of us helped: Rent and shelter – $18,588 Thanks to all of you and the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant, we were able to prevent homelessness for 56 of our fellow creations over the past six weeks. An abused mother with four children was provided with rent assistance to escape the constant fear and pain they suffered in. An 88-year-old mother living

disabled or a child. The distress would be felt even greater. The utility assistance you have provided was a blessing to all of our recipients. What a blessing to have you and the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant there to provide this much-needed utility assistance.
Utilities – $3,820.30 Gas, $1,000; electric, $2,820.30 As the utility disconnection moratorium expired on April 15, many were turning to us in desperation. Our spring weather continues to vacillate between winter and summer and the evenings are very cold still. Can you imagine how cold it would be in a home, mobile home or apartment without utilities? The inability to cook, store fresh foods, take a warm shower, turn on lights when it is dark and so many other things utilities provide would be very distressing for most of us. Now think how living without utilities would be if you were a senior citizen,

with her disabled son was saved from pending eviction. A family of four was safely sheltered in a motel for a month while they struggled financially until both parents found jobs. Now they have been moved to a rental they can afford, even with an eviction on their records, thanks to our referral, security deposits and first month’s rent. Several single mothers were struggling to pay rent and other expenses when the children’s fathers neglected to pay their child support. We helped with budgets and rent assistance to prevent their evictions until the authorities stepped in to bring these fathers into compliance. A disabled veteran and his wife were helped with their rent as they had paid for a much-needed car repair that prevented them from having enough left to pay their rent. Several working poor families were given help with lot rent for their mobile homes and rent for their apartments. Thanks to all of you and the Ziegler

The past few weeks have been busy with providing poverty relief made possible by the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant and all of you. We have been so busy we not only matched the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant but we also used the $30,000 to give assistance to those we found suffering from homelessness, hunger, lack of utilities and reliable transportation. We could not have done this on our own. We needed all of you and Paul Ziegler who generously provided these matching grant funds. The many turning to us for assistance needed all of you and the Ziegler $15,000 matching grant to change their lives from ones of hunger and fear to now living lives filled with gratitude and fulfillment. There are no words that can properly express the feeling of gratitude The Time Is Now to Help has for all of you and Paul Ziegler providing this assistance. All we can offer is our most sincere thank you. We also have another matching grant opportunity we are grateful for. Fox Charities has again provided a $25,000 matching grant to begin immediately. This grant will be called the Fox Charities Miracles $25,000 matching grant. The miracles needed at this time are to remove the pain and suffering of those in desperate need. Our fellow creations have exhausted all other resources and are living in the intense fear of poverty. As we have just successfully

assistance, they have (responded) in the most serving way possible.” According to Burke, WKCT agreed to send them billing for riders, which was about 40 riders per quarter and the agency offered to subsidize the rides for people in need. The grant comes as rider-
ship demands are increasing, according to Pomaville, who said some residents are growing more comfortable with mass transit. “Free rides are really starting to resonate with people, and they are using it to access the pantry or senior dining,” Pomaville said. “Which is a
change for those who may not have used public transportation much or ever in their lifetime.” However, WKCT only offers the rides to and from the Sharing Center, Pomaville said. The KCF grant covers a small portion the WCKT requires, taking people to other

Old, young or none of the above? JILL PERTLER Columnist
in my age was exciting and practically screamed maturity, as well as the privilege of having my mom drive me to the mall so I could get my ears pierced. The age of 16 is a milestone in nearly everyone’s oldometer. The importance of 16 candles on the cake can be summed up in two words: driver’s license. I no longer needed a parent to drive me to the mall; I could get there on my own. Anyone old enough to drive a car is old – at least old enough to drive a car. Everyone believes they are old at 18. And why not? You can do lots of grownup things, not the least of which is refer to yourself as an adult. It’s a privilege you’ve been waiting for your entire life. At 20 you are no longer a teenager and that has old written all over it. Looking

Dogs steal the show
Kimberly Pedersen and furry friend, Brandi, use all six of their collective legs to parade down the runway during Cali Consignment’s Fifth Annual Fashion Show held at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Sunday. For the first time, members of the village’s canine community modeled the latest in doggie duds which was also put up for auction. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for local charities. This year’s beneficiary was the Antioch Senior Center, which offers a host of services to the area’s elderly as well as hosting the fashion show each year. For most of my life I viewed myself as old. Even when I clearly wasn’t. It’s about perspective. The memories are vague, or even nonexistent, but when I was 2 I got a baby sister. By age 3, I’m pretty sure I thought I was old. For sure much older than my sister, which I held over her head – until I hit 30. When I was 5 and someone asked my age I no longer had to fold any of my fingers in toward my palm. I got to hold up my entire outstretched hand. I remember feeling like this was a big deal (because it was!). Plus I went to kindergarten. That most certainly qualified me as old. When I was 8 I was finally allowed to ride my pink banana seat bike by myself to the corner store to buy Laffy Taffy. That sort of responsibility and independence is reserved for those who have attained a certain level of experience and sophistication in life. Hence, in my eyes, I was old. When I was 10 I reached a new level of oldity: double digits and double hands. Having two numbers

Former Twin Lakes resident killed by police By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
A former Twin Lakes, Wis., resident with a checkered past in Kenosha County was recently shot and killed by police in Wausau, Wis. Oswald Mattner, convicted of several felonies as a Twin Lakes resident, allegedly brandished a knife when Wausau police arrived at a residence shortly after 10 p.m. April 30. “The suspect armed himself with a knife and the officer shot the suspect,” Wausau police stated in a news release. Police were called to the residence in the 700 block of Gilbert Street to address a domestic disturbance at 9:35 p.m. At 10:20 p.m., officers could not find Mattner in the area, touching off an extensive search. “The suspect was located outside, but was able to make his way inside the building,” the release said. “When the officer located the male, he attempted to take him into cus-
tody.” However, the release said, an officer fatally wounded Mattner when he retrieved a knife. Attempts by police to resuscitate Mattner were unsuccessful. Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations is assuming the investigation. Mattner, 42, had been convicted of felony battery to officers/firefighters and misdemeanor bail jumping in separate cases in 2012, and most recently false imprisonment in 2015, according to online court records. On Thursday, Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel said it is not known how long Mattner was in the area. Hardel referred all questions to the Department of Justice, but noted Mattner’s current whereabouts could be unveiled at the conclusion of the DOJ investigation. Phone calls to the DOJ in Madison were not returned.

back, of course, I was probably more kid than grown up, but I didn’t know it at the time because I considered 20 old. The same goes for 25. And (eek) 30, which was a biggie for many of us. Most of it is a blur after that. The older you get, the faster time flies. I remember my parents telling me this; I didn’t believe them. Now that I’ve become them I understand the truth of their words. Somewhere around mid-30-something I found designating myself as old wasn’t as alluring as it had been when I was 8. Instead of the sweetness

But you get to decide – whether you choose to be 8 years old or 88 years young. As for me, right now I’m somewhere in between. But young at heart. Hopefully always that. said. Still working at that point, Stigler would turn out a quilt whenever she had the chance. She would often try to use the colors of the flag, though it varied depending on what fabric was available. She’d work with whatever pattern intrigued her, and she didn’t take pictures of her earlier works. About four or five years ago, Rogall came to Stigler asking for just a little bit more. She needed 34 quilts in a month, hoping to match one with each resident in the new Gates Hall. Stigler didn’t quite make her deadline that time. “It took us 10 weeks,” she said. But the quilts were done, and sent via her sister to be handed out to the residents. “(Dyanne) gives them away,” Stigler said. “She always says we make her look good.” The variety of the patterns – and the colors – are limitless. Stigler finds quilt
patterns in several different places, and she will often try out different designs when she sees them in quilting magazines. She’s also been known to design her own. And while many of the quilts are red, white, and blue to match the patriotic nature of the vets home, Stigler has been known to go with colors often associated with women. “Some pinks and purples, some flowers,” Stigler said. “If a wife and husband come in, I try to coordinate the quilts.” The quilts become the property of the veterans and stay with their families after their death. What started as a hobby – something fun to fill the time – has turned into a much larger project. Stigler said she has made more than 400 quilts, “probably close to 500 now.”

(Continued from page 10) Getting a little help Stigler has been volunteering with the Union Grove Lions Club for about 20 years, mainly at the summer chicken barbeque. When she was there in 2015, she asked if the Lions Club would be willing to help out with the cost involved. The Lions made the donation to Stigler’s mother, Virginia, late last year, to the tune of $1,200. Darrell Graf, a member of the Union
Grove Lions club, said, “and we wanted to keep them going. It was money out of their pockets.” “That’s quite a lot,” Stigler said. “My mom and I bought a lot of supplies.” Supplies are also donated. Stigler said there is a group that ends up donating fabric – so far enough to make the majority of the quilts. “We don’t advertise for it,” she said. “If we want fabric, we go to the fabric store

and get it.” The majority of the cost of the quilts to Stigler and her mother comes from the thread used by the longarm machine that does the quilting – and for the batting used inside the quilts. But before the donations – before others began helping out – Stigler would invest her own money. She jokes that she makes the quilts to “stay out of trouble,” but really, it is a deep-seated feeling of
patriotism. “I come from a long line of military family,” Stigler said. “My dad was in the service, five of my brothers were in the service, and both my kids.” In her mind, it’s her way of paying back those who have served the country. “I come by it honestly,” Stigler said. “My feeling is they gave up a lot. If this is all I have to give up, so be it.”
Pact clears way for potential merger of Silver Lake and Salem By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Silver Lake and Salem, Wis., have entered into an agreement that has the potential for the two communities to join forces and create a combined village. The Silver Lake Village Board on May 5 unanimously approved the same boundary agreement resolution OK’d by the Town of Salem the previous week. “We had the first reading last night at our Committee of the Whole Meeting,” Village President Bruce Nopenz explained, “at the behest of
our attorney. We approved it tonight because we have some sense of urgency because of deadlines that must be met.” Copies of the resolutions were sent to approximately 40 other governmental bodies that lie within a five-mile radius of both municipalities. Salem and Silver Lake have been working cooperatively in recent months. Last year, the boards entered into talks regarding a fire and rescue services contract. Silver Lake Village Board members have
said they are pleased with the way they worked with Salem and the outcome of that negotiation. When former Silver Lake Public works supervisor Bob Williams gave three weeks notice of retirement, village officials called on Salem’s public works department for some assistance. Currently, Salem Public Works Supervisor Mike Murdoch is offering some administration and supervisory aid and Salem recently helped the village with the installation of a culvert. In the past, the village has
had to hire outside contractors for that work. Nopenz said, “The pieces are still being pulled together and both boards intend to have a plan put together to present at a public meeting on July 8.” Silver Lake Trustee Eric Ericksen commented, “Village status is something to be treasured. We might be able to use it to help a neighbor.” Silver Lake Trustee Dan Withers commented, “Salem has a lower mill rate. With a joining of forces, our services would improve and our
