The sharing of resources between the Antioch Fire Department and the First Fire Protection District 1 continues to move forward under the leadership of the Antioch Joint Fire Committee. The committee met on Jan. 20 and discussed its mission statement, goals of the committee now that the referendum has passed and the use of the nearly $250,000 that the two agencies received from the dissolution of the Antioch Rescue Squad. The Antioch Fire Department and fire protection district own four aging ambulances and seven heart monitor-defibrillators – Lifepaks – that are 15 years old and out of date. The group discussed the possibility of purchasing a 2015 low mileage ambulance with a power-assisted cot and Lifepak for less than
the total amount donated and developing a lease-to-buy plan for the other ambulances as it came time to replace them. Since this purchase is more than $20,000, Carolyn Van Patten, treasurer of fire protection district, requested that Fire Chief John Nixon ask for other bids for the purchase, which he reported he had done. According to Nixon, the cost of a life pack is $30,000 and a power cot is $12,000. Those attending the Jan. 20 Antioch Joint Fire Committee meeting affirmed the goal of uniting as one fire service. Committee Chairman Matt Tabar commented, “It’s good that we have a large crowd. Its important that everyone knows how this group functions.” He said the committee is a vehicle that works between the village and the fire protection district. “We can be an important adjunct to the governmental agreement.” Tabar explained that this committee has members from both governmental bodies can work and re-

Officer’s actions result in milestone Program prevents 50th overdose death

A Round Lake police officer revived an overdose victim using Naloxone late last month, marking the 50th life saved since the program was rolled out by the Lake County Opioid Initiative in late 2014. The save involving officer Matt Lyons took place on Jan. 23. It was the second such save for Lyons, who was the first officer in Round Lake Park to save a life while administering naloxone to an overdose victim. “Fifty lives saved and hundreds of families and friends have been impacted,” said Chief George Filenko, Chief of the Round Lake Park Police Department. “Change is occurring due to a small group of individuals that came together with an idea. We have achieved our goals beyond our expectations.” The Naloxone Police Program was implemented in November 2014. The Lake County Health Department conducted training sessions at their facility and also at the Mundelein Police Department. The program is a partnership between nearly 40 law enforcement agencies, the Lake County States Attor-
ney’s Office, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County Board, and the Lake County Health Department. The first life saved was by the Deerfield Police Department on Christmas Day 2014. “It is fitting that this milestone save was achieved by the department of one of the founding members of our Initiative,” said Mike Nerheim, Lake County State’s Attorney and Cofounder of the Lake County Opioid Initiative. “While I am encouraged by, and proud of our progress, one life lost to this epidemic is one too many. There are however, a lot of people that are alive today that would not be if it weren’t for this wonderful program. I am also proud to be part of a team that cares so deeply about the Lake County community,”
Collection boxes The Lake County Underage Drinking and Drug Prevention Task Force has expanded the use of prescription drug collection boxes across Lake County in the last four years. There are 27 drug collection boxes located in police

Ever wonder how much grandma’s old serving tray is worth? What about that heirloom oil painting or turn-ofthe-century shawl? The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum will host an Antique Appraisal Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the museum, 6422 Main St., Union. People may reserve a 10-minute slot in advance by calling the museum at (815) 923-2267. You must arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time to confirm your appointment and pay. Walk-ins also are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis – pending time and scheduling constraints. The cost is $5 for each object with a maximum of three appraisals per individual. Thanks to the generosity of the appraisers, all proceeds benefit the nonprofit historical society. Antiques will be appraised by the following professionals: • Debbie and Jim McArd-

If I hadn’t witnessed the feat (or better put, paw) with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have thought it possible because as a general rule, my cats don’t do anything I ask of them. They also don’t particularly like people pawing with their paws, which under normal circumstances would make shaking hands with a human a deplorable experience. It probably is deplorable. They possess powers and authority incomprehensible to mere humans. Not only that, they may want to kill us. Cat research made the news recently when a study compared domestic cats to larger cats in the wild saying both breeds have strong characteristics related to dominance, impulsiveness and neuroticism. And, both are predators with an instinct to hunt and eat their kill. Some researchers concluded that our cats would kill us, if only they could. Trouble is, we’re too big. So although cats are smarter and better than humans in every way possible, in this case, size does matter. In addition to their extremely honed balance, super-kinetic jumping skills and other worldly hunting abilities (among countless additional attributes) my cats are telepathic. At various times of the day – at their choosing – they sit atop a perch on the cabinet directly in front of the TV and stare with the tenacity and intensity of Spock doing a mind meld. This is because I think they are attempting a mind meld by telepathically sending the message, “Give me all the catnip, simple worthless human.” Unfortunately, as a simple

Vail Resorts buys Wilmot Mountain Ski facility had been owned by Stopa family for 78 years
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
For the first time in nearly 80 years, the name Stopa will not be attached to the Wilmot Mountain brand, after Vail Resorts purchased the western Kenosha County, Wis., ski hill in a sale announced by the company in late January. “We are thrilled to welcome Wilmot Mountain to the Vail Resorts family,” said Rob Katz, chairman and chief executive officer in a news release. Kelly Ladyga, Vice Pres-
ident of Corporate Communications, declined to comment on the terms and length of negotiations with Stopa LLC. Walter Stopa launched Wilmot Mountain in 1938, when it had just a single towrope, and by the 1950s the ski hill received recognition as one of the most successful ski areas in the Midwest. Wilmot Mountain was the first in the region to develop snowmaking and rubber hoses, aluminum pips and sprinkler heads, according to the release.
Currently, the mountain offers 25 trails, four terrain parks, a ski and snowboard school and a ski-racing program with 23 lanes. Vail Resorts plans to add more features to the ski hill, which will be its third urban area in the Midwest, along with Minneapolis and Detroit. Features will include revamping and updating the terrain parks, adding more coaching and instruction for all levels, expanded dining and entertainment options at the base area along with ded-
icated race programs. the ownership With change, Taylor Ogilvie will take over as the general manager, replacing Dennis Sheen. According to Sheen’s online professional profile, he served in the same position for about 10 years. Ladyga declined to discuss Sheen’s new role, noting that Vail Resorts is reviewing the complex operations. “We are currently assessing the needs of the organization and how the manage-
ment team will be structured in the future,” Ladyga said. “Dennis is currently working and helping us understand the way the resort operates,” Ladyga added. Ogilvie is originally from Chicago and grew up skiing at Wilmot Mountain, and held the same position at Michigan’s Mt. Brighton since 2013, according to the press release. In the press release, Katz offered thanks to the Stopa family for keeping the ski hill open for more than 75 years.
“Wilmot is steeped in skiing tradition and enjoys tremendous brand recognition among Chicago and Milwaukee skiers and snowboarders, thanks to the passion and dedication of the Stopa family over the last 75 years,” the release states. With Wilmot Mountain as Vail Resorts’ newest acquisition, people purchasing the company’s Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass for the 2016-17 can also connect with Vail’s other ski complexes in Colorado, Utah and Lake Tahoe.

What’s a Zam-bone-ski?
Don’t look now but it’s grooming the Silver Lake rink
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
GAIL PECKLER-DZIKI Hi-Liter
Alan Dunski (left) and Kevin Kusters pose with the Zam-bone-ski, an ice groomer they built from repurposed equipment. The machine keeps the surface of the new ice rink smooth and safe for skaters.
The Silver Lake, Wis., ice rink is up and running, but like all ice rinks, it needs to be maintained. The Village Board and Park Commission has worked to get the ice rink installed for the fewest dollars possible and residents Alan Dunski and Kevin Kusters have teamed up to make sure its groomed without breaking the bank. The vehicle they constructed for the task – using a four-wheeler and propane tank, among other things – has been christened “Zam-bone-ski.” Other items used to create the ice groomer include a bed frame, an old water heater, a lawn cart and some PVC piping. “Everything we used was recycled and repurposed,” Dunski said. Jan. 17 was the day of the Zam-bone-ski’s maiden voyage across the ice. About a half dozen dedicated people were out in the subzero weather to clear off shavings from the ice skates before the Zam-bone-ski was released. The shavings need to be removed to allow for easier and more efficient ice grooming. “People are out there every day,” Dunski said. “Teddy Kmeic just called to ask if he could bring his ice hockey team out there. The answer was yes.” The rink is large enough to host hockey and family skating. “Just be smart about sharing the rink,” he said. Earlier this month, Silver Lake residents discovered vandalism to the rink. Several people with shoe sizes that appeared to range from a man’s 10 to a man’s 14 had stomped through the inch of slush, in some
areas breaking through the ice. The hard freeze that occurred shortly after held the footprints and crags and valleys created. Dunski said that he and several others spent more than 12 hours scraping the damage off the rink. “I worked at this along with the Kusters family, Bruce (Nopenz), Erik (Erickson), Doug (Randolph), Jim (Christiansen) and a couple Silver Lake families that showed up to ice skate,” he said. Dunski said he had to purchase a specialized shovel and a scraper from Nice Rink in Genoa City. Nice Rink is the manufacturer of the liner and ice rink system. Dunski said that there was enough money to cover the less than $100 to purchase the necessary equipment. The main concern, explained Dunski, was possible damage to the liner. A replacement costs about $800. “It doesn’t appear that the liner was damaged,” Dunski said in a telephone interview, “but we won’t really know until spring when the rink thaws.” The rink is currently open for use until the thaw. “People should use common sense,” Dunski said. “If the ice looks like it’s getting darker, it’s soft and people should stay off. Make sure the ice is hard.” Dunski said that this ice rink has brought unity to the village. “Everyone is saying that this rink is a great idea. We haven’t had this much agreement in the village in a long time. We have had more people on this ice rink than attending any other event in this village in a long time. If folks aren’t skating, they are driving by to see it.”

Clerk helps residents prepare for election
Firemen in the future no longer stop fires, but start them by burning books. One of them has forbidden doubts and the consequences are great. This scenario will be presented in a special two-hour radio play adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” by RG Productions and directed by Ed Godula, exclusively for PM&L’s stage in Antioch. The performance is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2:30 p.m. and will feature multimedia and live sound effects. RG Productions is an award-winning group based in Kenosha, Wis., home to the legendary stage, radio and film icon, Orson Welles, and performs on stages and historical and modern venues throughout southeast Wisconsin and northern Illinois. According to the show’s producer, Nita Hunter, the “Fahrenheit 451” story was never made into a radio play like many of Bradbury’s other stories, so Godula had to turn to the text to create one. “’Fahrenheit 451’s’ messages of freedom
and speech, and the consequences of losing them, still resonates today,” says Godula. “We think that the power of Ray Bradbury’s words, our sound and film enhancements and, most importantly, the commitment and talent of our actors make this a radio play not to be missed.” The show features the following RG Productions members: Arsene Gerber, Kandy Helson, Jim Kollar, Tina Paukstelis, Jay Rattle and Amy-Louise Seyller. The show is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $10 for general seating. To reserve tickets directly through the box office, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon and oneand-a-half hours before curtain on show dates. For further information on the show and RG productions, visit www.rgaudioproductions.com. PM&L Theatre is located at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch.
Bishop appointed circuit court judge Christen L. Bishop has been appointed a Lake County Circuit Court judge effective Feb. 1. “Judge Bishop’s legal skills and trial experience, professionalism and conscientiousness will positively continue to well serve the Lake County community,” Chief Judge Jorge Ortiz said. Bishop appointment is effective until Dec. 3, 2018. To maintain the circuit judge position after Dec. 3, 2018, Bishop will have to be nominated in the March 2018 primary and elected in the November 2018 general election. Bishop’s appointment by the Supreme Court fills the
last of the three recent vacancies due to the retirements in January of circuit judges John T. Phillips, George Bridges and Christopher C. Starck. Appointed as associate judge in September 2012, Bishop was assigned to the traffic/misdemeanor division, serving in Mundelein Branch Court from October 2012 to July 2014. In 2014, she moved to Bond Court in the criminal felony division where she currently serves. During her 17 years as a former Lake County assistant state’s attorney, Bishop tried many serious and high profile cases before juries and judges. She served as a division chief
for the Juvenile Trial and Special Investigations divisions, while also acting as a supervising attorney for the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center. Bishop received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1994. She is a member of the Lake County and Illinois State Bar Associations, the Illinois Judges Association, the Lake County Chiefs of Police Association and the Jefferson Inn. Bishop is married to Lake County attorney Gregory Nikitas, and they have two children.

significantly reduced overdose death rates as a result of prescription and heroin misuse and abuse. In 2009 there were 82 opioid-related overdose deaths, compared to 63 overdose deaths in 2015. Without the implementation of the Naloxone program, officials estimate Lake County would have had a total of 103 opiate overdose related deaths. “Sadly, many people have died for us to get to this point,” said Chelsea Laliberte, Executive Director of Live4Lali and Cofounder of the Lake County Opioid Initiatve. “We owe it to their memories and families to continue fighting for those struggling. These programs are proof that when communities come together to do the right thing, change can occur. “As we’ve always said, no one deserves to die from something as preventable and reversible as a drug overdose,” she added. “With continued awareness and progress, our hope is that every person in Lake County will become aware of the laws, programs and services supporting them.” For more information, visit www.opioidinitiative.org or www.drugfreelakecounty.org.

Law enforcement takes control of and destroys drugs on a regular basis as part of their regular operations. “One of the biggest things we have seen with these boxes is the reduction in terms of opioid related deaths,” said Bruce Johnson, CEO of Nicasa Behavioral Health Services and Cofounder of the Lake County Opioid Initiative. “We lost 41 people in 2011 when this disposal program was in its infancy. Since then as the number of boxes grew and the weight collected increased, we have seen a steady decline in the number of deaths to a low of 18 in 2015. “’Fahrenheit 451’s’ messages of free-

The 12,000 pounds collected contained nearly 30,000 different kinds of doses of scheduled medication – which has an approximate street value of $750,000. Lake County has less than 5 percent of the population of the State of Illinois, yet the task force collected close to 25 percent of the total amount of unused prescription medication in the state. The drop boxes are designed to significantly reduce the number of outdated or unneeded prescription drugs in private residences. These same drugs have become the target of theft and misuse, oftentimes by people who have access to the residence, according to officials. This has contributed to prescription drugs being the num-

Fire devastates mother with disabled daughter Dear W.C., I know a woman who lives with her disabled daughter in an apartment in an older home. Yesterday her apartment was badly damaged when the apartment downstairs from her caught fire. Everything she owns was damaged by smoke, and she cannot afford to replace it. Thank God they were not home at the time of the fire. Now they need a place to live, clothing, furniture and beds. I am sure they would be very grateful for any help The Time is Now to Help can provide.

They had not authorized to be living nowhere else to go. I asked in those conditions and the friend if he had offered were probably hiding that to provide them emergency fact. I waited quietly until shelter and he shared he was they thought I had left and living with several male heard some noise coming roommates, and it would from inside. This time I not have been an ideal knocked and said, “I know
you are in there. Please let me in. I am here to help.” I waited a few more minutes and finally heard the door open. A disheveled-looking woman stood there in her coat. I showed her my identification and she let me in. The apartment was filled with smoke damage. The walls and surfaces were dark from smoke. The windows were all open, so it was cold and getting dark. I saw the disabled daughter sitting in a chair with a blanket around her. The mother introduced me. I asked the mother if she would be willing to move to a motel with the daughter. After I convinced her how bad this environment was for both her daughter’s and her health, she finally agreed. She not only agreed, she burst into tears. Between her tears she tried to tell me how scared they were and how they had just paid their rent the week before the fire, so they had no money. Their belongings were all ruined. The mother said, “How will I replace all this? It isn’t fancy, but it is all we have.” I told her not to worry, we would be there to help them and told her we would talk more once she was out of the cold and smoke-damaged apartment. I was feeling light headed from just my few minutes in the apartment. I gave her the address of where to go and told her I would meet her there with some volunteers. The mother told me she was
going to start packing but I told her to leave everything behind, as we would be getting them everything they needed. The mother grabbed her purse, and I helped them out the door. We were met at the motel by two of our women volunteers. I had texted them a list of items needed to get the women through the night. I had asked the mother for both her and the daughter’s sizes so they would at least have a clean change of clothes and pajamas. The volunteers also picked up some toiletries, a hot meal for dinner and some snacks and breakfast food. I had called the motel to arrange for a room with a kitchenette, as I knew they would probably need to be there for some time until we could arrange a more permanent housing situation. The mother and daughter walked into the motel kitchenette and I could see the relief they felt not having to spend another night in the cold, dark and smoke-ruined apartment. After the volunteers showed them the items purchased and the hot meal ready for them to eat, I could see the mother and daughter were very grateful, hugging each other. They thanked the volunteers profusely for their help and said their goodbyes. The daughter was very hungry, so we set up the hot meal on the small table in the room. While the women ate hungrily, I
asked questions about the mother’s job and financial situation. The mother shared how her daughter had been born disabled. Her husband had passed away several years after her daughter’s birth, and she had never married again. Her daughter was now 19 but not capable of living on her own. The mother said, “She will probably live with me her whole life but that’s -OK. I love her, and we are best friends. She is not an imposition or a burden. She is capable of being home for a few hours at a time, which, allows me to go to work part-time. I don’t earn much but between her SSD and my small income, we get by month to month.” I knew they probably got by until an emergency such as this one came up. We put together a budget. After going over all their expenses, I saw they could get by only in a very inexpensive rental. They were fine living in a onebedroom apartment. I told her we would help them find that special rental they needed. The mother did not want to move from her apartment as they had lived there for years, and it was very inexpensive. I told her about the dangers of living in the smoke- and waterdamaged building and how it would be a long time until that building was suitable for inhabitants again. She took that into account and followed my advice on
finding another apartment. When she began to distress over her furniture, bedding and clothing, I told her not to worry. I told her about all of you and your generosity that allowed us to provide the assistance she would need. When I showed her our website, she was in awe over all we had accomplished together. The next few weeks were busy as the mother helped us find a suitable rental. We finally found one they could afford on their very limited income. An added bonus was a laundry room they shared with two other renters so they would no longer have the expense of a laundromat. Once the apartment was secured, we were able to purchase two twin beds for the mother and daughter’s shared bedroom. We also provided new bedding, towels and other household necessities. Once the volunteers saw the space that was left, a couch, television, small table and chairs appeared. When we asked the volunteers about these items they said, “These were just a few things I had sitting in my garage I was going to sell anyway.” When we looked at how nice they were, we knew they probably were moved to donate them to these women. After two weeks living in the motel these women were happily living in their now cozy apartment. When walking

Drones offer a spectacular view at an affordable price
By Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER
ne doesn’t need to spend more than a few minutes with two area business owners to get a sense of the passion and excitement they have being involved in the world of drones. Scott Parks, owner of Hounds Detectors & Hobbies in Burlington, and John Danno, owner of HobbyTown USA in Lake Geneva, agree that the business of drones has literally taken off in recent years. A drone is basically an unpiloted flying robot that operates remotely through a toggled controller or autonomously via software. Some drones use Wi-Fi signals through a cellphone while others utilize Global Positioning System (GPS.) “The quality from the cameras on them is amazing. It’s crystal clear,” Parks said. “Plus they’re really fun.” “They have really taken off and the prices have come down a lot recently,” Danno said. “It’s much more affordable now to buy a good quality drone.” Parks said one example of something drones are commonly used for is car commercials. And Parks himself uses one for his second business – an industrial power washing company. “We use the DJI Inspire 1 drone to take photos and video of job sites, before, during and after working on them. I edit the videos – it’s broken into frames – and the contractors we work with absolutely love seeing them. It gives them a very different view of the job,” Parks said. Danno said he’s sold numerous drones for use in a variety of business settings. “I’ve sold a lot to real estate agents who use them to shoot video for virtual property tours and some to the Dairy Farmers of America who used to spend hours driving around on ATVs HEATHER RUENZ Hi-Liter searching for cows,” Danno said. “Building John and Margie Danno, owners of HobbyTown USA in Lake Geneva, said helping inspectors, too. This summer the Dannos will offer or high-rise building in a much safer way than drone racing at their racetrack behind Showboat Theater where drones will fly around climbing up there.” obstacles in a race against time and other drones. The smallest, and cheapest drones available, for $20 to $30, don’t have a camera and are used “to simply fly around,” Parks said. “But you can buy a drone for $60 that has a camera on it – and takes good quality photos. It’s crazy,” Parks said. As of Dec. 21, 2015, anyone who owns an aircraft. So while the rules for drones may “I like to explain it this way: Mercedes Benz a drone that weighs more than .55 lbs. be different, you have the responsibility to has always been the first car company to come must register with the Federal Aviation operate safely, just as a Cessna or 747 pilot out with new safety features. Registration requirements
A drone comes with batteries or a battery pack, Parks said. Most drones can be charged using a USB port on a computer but the bigger ones have their own charging supply. Battery life, on average, is about 30 minutes for a larger drone; 10 minutes for a smaller one, he said. Both HobbyTown USA and Hounds Detectors & Hobbies includes training for new drone owners and pledge to help customers make the right decision in what drone to purchase for their individual needs. “It comes down to finding out what a person wants to use the drone for. There are a lot of lower priced ones that can serve a purpose just fine,” Danno said. “I want them to know how to use and I want them to actually use it.” Parks said he enjoys “talking to people about them and will be glad to help them choose what’s right for them.” Danno said some of the features people enjoy include “follow me” and “watch me.” In a drone with the “follow me” feature, it does just that, follows the person – on a walk, run or bike ride, for example. “And while some controllers are fairly large, especially those with the screen in them for the live video feed, there are binding devices that can be paired with the drone. It doesn’t show the live feed but the binding controller is smaller and can easily fit into someone’s pocket or attach to a fitness armband,” Danno said. Both Danno and Parks said the near-constant improvement in drones has been a challenge to keep up with at times and the changes keep coming. Danno said while most drones are quads, or have four blades and are best used in more open spaces, there is a newer one that has six blades and some special features. “It’s going to be out in a couple of months and has what’s called collision avoidance. In the video shot with it, it’s flying through a heavily wooded area and darting around trees. It’s amazing,” Danno said. Parks said one example of just how far drones have come is the speed some of them can travel. “One goes 100 miles per hour and the live feed is viewed through goggles. It can go down narrow nature paths and makes you feel like you’re flying through there,” Parks said. Danno said he plans to offer a new venue to drone owners this summer at a racetrack he operates behind Showboat Theater just outside of Lake Geneva. “It’s kind of a simple concept, really, using hula hoops and water noodles. The drones will follow the racetrack path and fly through things in a race. It should be really fun and is something people are very interested in,” Danno said. Obregon trial set for September Defense must review massive amount of evidence By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Citing the large amount of evidence that must be reviewed, a lawyer for Andrew Obregon on Thursday requested more time to prepare for the accused murderer’s trial. Taking the request under consideration during the preliminary hearing, a judge set Sept. 25 as the date of a jury trial in Kenosha County (Wis.) Circuit Court. Obregon, 32, is accused of 32 crimes, which include first-degree intentional homicide of 37-year-old Tywon

Anderson and first-degree attempted intentional homicide of a Brighton woman. According to the criminal complaint, Obregon allegedly confessed to all but two charges – first-degree attempted intentional homicide and kidnapping in his last attempt to flee authorities Oct. 13. However, he pleaded not guilty to all charges at a November preliminary hearing. Deputy District Attorney Michael Graveley wanted to set an earlier trial date, but noted Obregon’s defense needed more time to review documents. “The council has indicated that, what was an enormous amount of electronic discoveries, they are still actively reviewing it,” Graveley told Circuit Court Judge Chad Kerkman. Carl Johnson, Obregon’s public defender, did not expect the prosecution to push the trial date forward at Thursday’s pre-trial hearing, but understood the District Attorney’s Office desire to keep things moving.
“Coming into this hearing, I had not anticipated setting a trial date,” Johnson said. “But I know from the state’s perspective, there are a lot of witnesses and a lot of moving parts, that they want a trial date set.” Johnson, who did not object to setting a trial date, expressed concern it would set an unreasonable timeline to compile a witness list. “Under these circumstances, it would be difficult to comply with, and I am asking the court to consider granting an extension, so we could provide a witness list,” Johnson said. “There is a just paper discovery, itself is very large, but the electronic discovery is massive, for lack of better word,” Johnson added. Deadline for a witness list is April 1, with a motion hearing to follow on April 15. Obregon eluded capture for weeks last fall, leaving residents in Western Kenosha County – where he was believed to hiding – on edge. He was captured Oct. 13 in
Northern Illinois after allegedly beating a woman at a home in the Town of Brighton and stealing her car.

Winter is high time for fires Area firefighter offers tips By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
According to the National Fire Protection Association, the keeper of fire statistics, the risk of fires in a home are greatest from December to February with half of the annual fires reported during this period. Jason Witte, captain of Salem Fire and Rescue Station 4 in Silver Lake, Wis., said a homeowner is the first
line of defense in fighting fires in the home. It is best to have an evacuation plan should the smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sound, he said. Simple steps can prevent most home heating fires. Annual inspections of heating equipment and annual chimney cleaning can prevent trouble before it starts. Here are several tips offered by Witte:
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. • Keep all flammable items at least 3 feet away from furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves and portable space heaters. • Keep a 3-foot “kidfree” zone around open fires and space heaters. • Turn off portable heaters when no one is in the room. • Always use the fuel specified by the manufactur-
er for the portable heaters. • Put a sturdy screen in front of the fireplace to stop sparks from flying into the room. • Don’t burn paper in a fireplace. Often large embers will fly out the chimney and can lead to other fires. • Place ashes in a metal container prior to removing them. • Never use an oven to heat the home.
• Make sure all candles • If there is a deep snoware kept at least 3 feet from fall, make sure the vents flammable material and in an for the furnace, fireplace, clothes dryer and wood stove adequate container. • Use only space heaters are clear. that carry the certification of Witte also warns not run the Underwriter Laboratory. vehicles in garages. The Biology and Geography of Nicaragua study tour provided an opportunity for students to experience clinical work or work on water projects. Both aspects provided students first-hand knowledge of the rural volcanic island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. Students also learned about the interplay of culture, medicine, landscape, flora and fauna of Nicaragua and saw how all of this has affected the land and people. The tour also had a sig-

Early voting delayed by ballot dispute In-person early voting at the county clerk’s office and voting by mail throughout Illinois will be delayed due to a dispute over the names of certain presidential candidates appearing on the statewide primary ballot. By state law, in-person early voting at the Clerk’s office and voting by mail should begin Feb. 4. But without state certification of the candidates, ballots cannot be printed. “Based on delay projections from the Illinois State Board of Elections, I am anticipating ballots to be ready by Feb. 17,” Lake County Clerk Carla Wyckoff said. “We have already begun preparing Lake County’s ballots for all other candidates and public questions. “When our office receives final candidate certification, we have printing and testing resources on standby who will work quickly to make ballots available to the voters,” she said. “If ballots become ready earlier than anticipated, such notice will be distributed through the media, local governmental offices, social media, and our website.” Wyckoff anticipates that all 14 of Lake County’s other early voting sites will be open as scheduled on Feb. 29. Visit www.LakeCountyClerk.info to find all early voting locations and hours. Election Day voting will not be affected by this certification delay.
