Sharing their passion
At a past Elkhorn Antique Flea Market, vendors described the love they for history and the preservation of the different ways people used to live.
“I love history and finding items that are from a certain time period. My booth is sorted into eras,” vendor Barb Shukin said at the time. “It brings a lot of joy to people.”
Shukin offered a variety of reworked pieces along with originals.
“Some are pure, some are restored. If I do any reworking to a piece – for example recovering a chair – it is with periodappropriate vintage fabric,” she said.
In the past several years, antique items have become increasingly trendy.
While most vendors said they were pleased vintage items continue to remain in circulation, some said they didn’t concern themselves with how popular something is.
“I don’t worry about trends. I buy what I love. I don’t even like to look through magazines,” Diane Passi said at the time.
Passi owns a store in Barrington, Ill., called Checkpoint 19 Antiques. The store has nailed down a sought-after industrial look that transcends styles and eras.
“My husband and I love telling a story with our pieces. People visit our booth, and they become mesmerized,” Passi said at the time.

Though Checkpoint 19 Antiques does not try to be trendy, it’s clear the shop’s rustic and repurposed vintage style is a hit with people of all ages. The shop possesses an effortless style that keeps younger people invested in vintage items, she said.
On antique flea market event days, the fairgrounds quickly fill up with customers and attendees often bargaining over prices. And it’s not always for a great amount as some deals are negotiated for a price difference of a few dollars.
Details for dealers
Although a variety exists, the primary emphasis is on antiques and old collectibles. Only dealers with all antiques and old collectibles are currently being added to the show, the website states.
There are a variety of spaces available for vendors, beginning at a cost of $100 and including outdoor areas, grandstand spaces, outside drive-thru spaces as well as inside space – in animal barns and concrete floor buildings – such as north hall, small animals, junior exhibits, the fair office, antiques building and the horticulture building.
Vendors can rent 8-foot-long tables for $10 each, however, there are limited quantities so it’s recommended that they be reserved well in advance.
Shows are held rain or shine and pre-paid dealer reservations are non-refundable.
“Spaces fill rapidly. Any unreserved spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, but are becoming increasingly limited,” the website states.
