The Kenosha Regional Airport is owned and operated by the City of Kenosha.

According to Cynthia Nelson, Curator and Archivist of the Kenosha History Center, the first attempt at an airport in Kenosha occurred as a private project in August 1911. Then, by 1928, three local residents planned for their own private airport. Using a local pasture, they began to map out their airport. The site was at 22nd Avenue south of 75th Street. Sitting on a Boeing 737 aircraft, flying along at 41,000 feet amid the blue sky, puffy clouds, and bright sunshine certainly gives a person pause to think about the progress aviation has made over the last century. Even advanced aircraft would take some of us to the moon. But here we are today with every major city being home to at least one airport. Even some small cities have airports. Elderly woman struggles with pain, expenses

Dear W.C., I am an 80-year-old widow who needs help. I have been renting the same house for the past 10 years, ever since my husband died. I am having a hard time paying my rent this month due to a car repair and I had to go see the dentist. My car repair was much more expensive than I had thought it would be and it took all my rent money I had set aside. I do not work and I live on Social Security. It is not much but I have always been able to get by. Now I am in terrible pain all the time due to several bad teeth in my mouth. The dentist told me to go see an oral surgeon, but I cannot afford that. I don’t know what to do about this as I can barely eat or even think straight with this pain. If you were only able to help me with one thing, at this point I would choose getting my teeth fixed even if it meant I would become homeless. I can’t continue living like this. Please, please can you help me? I have never asked for help before in my life. This is very humbling for me. Dear readers, I went to the address

We went on to going over her financial problems. She showed me the dentist bill and car repair bills that had thrown off her whole budget. I looked them over and they were not extravagant. The repairs on the car were within reason and necessary to safely operate her vehicle.

The dentist bill was for x-rays and an exam. The dentist had given her an oral surgeon to call and he also happened to be one of the oral surgeons we have used for The Time Is Now to Help clients in the past. I knew he would do a good job and give us the best price possible for the extractions needed to relieve her pain. I told her she needed to have this done as soon as possible. I pulled up his number from my contacts and called to approve her surgery. I handed the phone to her so she could make an appointment. She looked surprised but took the phone from me as I told her to make an appointment. After she made her appointment, I made a call to a volunteer to set up a driver for her day of surgery. The senior woman was even more surprised when she heard me making these arrangements. She said, “I am speechless. I have had no one even care about me for years and now you even make sure I have someone take me for my surgery. I don’t know how to thank you for this.” I said, “The only thanks we need are prayers for The Time Is Now to Help and

all the people we help.” The woman’s reply was, “You don’t have to ask me for that. I am already thanking God for you.” After a thorough review of her finances, I could see she was just getting by before these two emergency expenses. I set up an appointment to have the remainder of the work needed on her car completed. We paid her overdue rent to help relieve some of the financial strain. When I finally got up to leave the senior woman wrapped her arms around me and gave me a long hug. She kissed my cheek and said, “You are an angel W.C.” Several weeks later the senior woman’s whole life was improved. She is now pain free and her mouth improves daily. The volunteer continues to check on her regularly and is happy to report the woman is very independent. After spending time together and some food deliveries, especially soft foods and soup as she was recuperating from her surgery, they have formed a wonderful friendship. The senior woman that was once all alone now has a friend. She also has started going to church with the volunteer. The once lonely, sad and pain-filled woman is a completely different person. Her life has been renewed thanks to all of you making our mission possible. At my follow-up visit, the senior widow wanted me to share with all of you her heartfelt thanks for all we do together. I had previously explained to her how I do not do this alone, it is all of us together. She asked me to tell all of you, “Please tell everyone that is involved with The Time Is Now to Help that they are in my prayers. I am so thankful for all you have done to rekindle my life. Every day has once again become such a blessing. I have no more pain. I am not living in financial fear and I know I am not alone.” With that I gave her a hug and told her, “You will never be alone again.” As she hugged me in return, both our eyes were filled with happy tears. Slices of Life I’ve never used a pen name or adopted an alias. My family’s not in the witness protection program, which I’m assuming would necessitate a name change. But this week we are the Nielsens. It’s a moniker steeped in power, prestige and a TV viewing diary. The Nielsen in our house is the Nielsen Company, which establishes ratings and rankings for TV shows by gathering information from regular people like us. Families are randomly selected and asked to participate by keeping a TV viewing diary for seven days. People in large cities often have electronic monitoring devices attached to their TVs. Small town folks still complete diaries the old-fashioned way with pen, paper and the occasional writer’s cramp. Nielsen has been tracking and compiling viewership data since the 1950s. Starting last Thursday, my family became members of Team Nielsen. Just think – what we watch today will be statistics tomorrow! This creates a stress and pressure. Oh, sure, I love the idea of being a statistic. The question is: which one? Some shows are trendy and cool. Others educational. Or sophisticated. Or raunchy. There’s reality TV. Reruns.

A Nielsen family has to admit their viewing habits to the world, and we can’t be tuned in to the History and NASA channels all the time. Although my husband would like to give it a try. We must, in the name of Nielsen, admit to our real, true, not always educational and sometimes junky viewing pleasures – even if we are a happily married woman tuning in to The Bachelor. We also must face the reality of quantity over quality as the diary fills and we come to the realization that we regrettably do watch more TV than we thought. Furthermore, a person who keeps the TV on all day while she is home, even though she isn’t watching, is required to document this in the diary. Fessing up to not watching the infomercials as they play on the TV in the kitchen may

We are the Nielsens not be something to take pride in, but it does require honesty. All this transparency helps the Nielsen Company do its job. According to their website, they track not only TV habits, but monitor books, music, video games, movies, social media, smart phone operating systems and website merchandisers. If you’re tuning in, chances are Nielsen is attuned to it. It feels a little like Big

Brother, which is another reality show some very nice, smart people at my house may or may not watch. Keeping the diary makes one more cognizant of one’s viewing choices. Before this week, TV was TV. Spending a mindless hour with Ellen, Dr. Phil, the Property Brothers, Judge Judy, the Kardashians or Pat and Vanna might have been a guilty pleasure, but no one had to know about it. Now

I have to take pen to paper and make my wheel watcher status official. The choices are weighted with value. What kind of person spends four hours watching home improvement shows on a Saturday? Certainly not me! I’m nearing the completion of the diary and wonder: at the end of it all will my viewing habits make me look like the biggest loser or an American idol? Is there

any chance I’ll walk out a survivor or am I simply walking dead? One thing’s for sure. By this time next week I’ll be back to being plain old me. But for now, I am a Nielsen. The middle of Oregon was the perfect spot for the introduction of the 2015 Subaru Outback because it was just like going to a family reunion – everywhere you looked there were more Subaru Outbacks of all ages. We don’t know the actual numbers but after spending a few hours in the Bend, Oregon area one day, we would guess that the Outback has to be the most popular car in the area. It’s easy to see why so many people in Central Oregon are Outback drivers. This is a major outdoor recreation area with world class skiing, white water rafting, fishing, golfing, rock climbing and a multitude of other activities. The Subaru Outback is a perfect vehicle for these active people because of its utilitarian features and all-weather/terrain abilities, plus it’s a great everyday driver so owners can always be prepared to partake of the outdoors. The 2015 Subaru Outback, takes all the best parts of the first four generations and 20 years of experience and molds them into this latest iteration and then adds some great new features. Starting with a revised and significantly stiffer (51 per-

cent) chassis, Subaru engineers have added a smoother, more efficient transmission, Active Torque Vectoring for greater agility and enhanced all-wheel drive with new X-Mode technology to expand its off-road prowess. They packaged it in a stylish new body, with more interior space and luxury appointments. Then for the crowning touch they equipped the Outback with a couple of state-ofthe-art safety technology packages. We experienced the 2015 Subaru Outback in real world conditions, driving the on- and off-road in the Cascade Mountains near Bend and Sisters, Ore. The first thing we both commented on was how quiet this new car is. The new acoustical windshield, thicker acoustic panels, foam insulation and liquid-filled engine mounts created an extremely quiet interior space at all speeds. The quiet was accompanied by a very accommodating car-like ride and handling with none of the roughness often experienced in many SUV/crossover style vehicles. Most 2015 Subaru Outback buyers will opt for the base 175-horsepower four-cylinder Boxer engine with its horizontally-opposed cylinders. The double overhead cam engine,

which is about 80 percent new, propels the Outback from 0 to 60 mph in 10.3 seconds according to Subaru tests. Fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. The numbers are impressive when you consider that all models are all-wheel drive. The only available transmission is Subaru’s efficient Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The transmission is designed to electronically simulate six shift points and can be shifted manually with the console mounted shifter or using the steering wheel mounted shift paddles. While we found this to be a very nice drivable combination, it cried out for a turbocharger – which would have been especially helpful at the higher elevations. We both preferred the Outback 3.6R model, which has a 256-hp six-cylinder Boxer engine that produces a significant increase in performance. Zero to 60 mph takes only 7.3 seconds, making this a much better road car. Fuel economy is estimated at 20/27/22 mpg. The 3.6R also has a high-torque version of the Lineartronic CVT, derived from the Subaru WRX performance model. It electronically shifts with even more

noticeable shift points, making it feel more like a six-speed automatic. It also has steering wheel-mounted shift paddles and gated manual shift linkage on the center console. The CVT was especially impressive in off-road and on rough dirt roads where the unlimited ratios helped keep the power delivery smooth and at peak performance and efficiency. We also liked the precise, positive feel of the new electric assist steering system. All Outbacks are equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with its new Active

Torque Split. The system measures acceleration, steering angle and yaw rates and based on the driving conditions and wheel slippage, adjusts clutch controls to distribute torque to the wheels with the best traction. The 2015 Subaru Outback is available in two models, the 2.5i and 3.6R. The 2.5i has three trim levels including the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited with prices, after the destination charge, of $25,745, $27,845 and $30,845 respectively. The 3.6R is only available in the

Limited trim and is priced at $33,845. Option packages include various combinations of Moonroof, Power Rear Gate, Navigation System, EyeSight, Blind Spot Detection & Rear Cross Traffic Alert and add from $1,695 to $3,390 (for all the features). Subaru has been something of a MVP in auto industry statistics the last few years showing unprecedented annual sales gains while much of the industry struggled to survive. Subaru has succeeded because they’ve been doing most everything right.

Silver Lake tests new voting equipment Local primary was first for area

Village of Silver Lake Clerk Terry Faber admits she was a little bit nervous about Tuesday’s primary election. After all, with just one other Kenosha County primary, Silver Lake was the testing ground for new voting equipment being employed throughout the county. “I feel like a guinea pig,” Faber prior to the primary. The rollout of the new equipment is taking place across Kenosha County, with all area municipalities getting the equipment. The Village of Twin Lakes approved the purchase recently, but Silver Lake was the first to actual use it during an election. There are two different pieces of equipment – a new electronic ballot scanner, and a ballot printer for those needing special

access (a spoken ballot, display screen or otherwise). The older ballot scanners could not communicate with the newer special-access machines, Faber said, and created extra work during elections. Now, the ballot printers will print someone’s electronic ballot, and those votes can be fed directly into the new scanner. The scanner has a larger, more user-friendly access screen – and a port where results can be downloaded to a USB memory stick. The new counting machine will also reject overvotes and ask people if they want to correct an undervote. While Faber was nervous about being the first to use the machines, she’s also looking forward to fewer problems. “I feel like it’s going to save time in the long run,” said Faber.

establish an airfield and hangar for commercial use. The current Kenosha airport opened in May 1959 at 9900 52nd Street, just east of Interstate 94. The airport is owned and managed by the City of Kenosha. While the airport does not provide scheduled passenger service, many other services are available at the site. The airport has three runways the smallest being 3,302 feet long and the largest 5,449 feet long. The largest airplane that can be landed at this site is a 30-passenger corporate jet. The airport is an air-traffic-controlled general aviation facility, The airport is an important part of the Kenosha economy. Private jets provide easy access to the area and those with business ties to Kenosha find flying their private jets in and out of the airport to be a time saver. There is no need to travel to Milwaukee to catch a scheduled flight. The airport consists of several buildings and hanger facilities where many privately owned or corporate planes make their home when in the Kenosha area. Kenosha-based companies often use their private aircraft to visit their branch facilities in other areas of the country. Hanger space is available for lease and some for purchase.

For those looking to take flight lessons, there are several businesses on the grounds that offer this service. Gateway Aviation, Midwestern Helicopter, and Lakeshore Helicopter each offer flight lessons based at the airport, according to the City of Kenosha. The airport offers many services in addition to pilot instruction and hanger rental. These include airfreight and cargo handling, charter services, aircraft rental and aircraft sales. According to the City of Kenosha website the following businesses are located at the airport: AVP Kenosha Aviation, Aviation Plus, LLC, Gateway Technical College, Kenosha Aero Inc, Lakeshore Helicopter, Midwestern Helicopter Stick and Rudder, and Sunshine Aircraft. There is also a site available on the northwest corner of 52nd Street and 104th Av-

enue for a restaurant. This site is located next to both the Business Park of Kenosha and the airport. Although there is no scheduled passenger service from the Kenosha airport, it is still a relatively busy airport. In 2013 there were 60,437 takeoffs and landings here. Approximately 95 percent of these flights are general aviation with a small portion being military use. Area woman selected for Master Teacher Project By Anne Trautner STAFF WRITER

When fourth-grade teachers across the country want to come up with a good way to teach how to build factor pairs, many times they go to BetterLesson.com to find an interactive lesson plan. Many of the math lessons there are developed by Mary Ellen Kanthack, who has been teaching at Brookwood Middle School in Genoa City, Wis., for 15 years. The site features lesson materials, as well as videos that that show Kanthack teaching her students so that other teachers can mimic the teaching method. “It’s just a lot of fun,” Kanthack said. Kanthack, a nationally board certified teacher, has produced 140 lessons for the site. Some of Kanthack’s materials are downloaded 60 times a week. The National Education Association selected Kanthack in December 2013 to develop math lessons for the site as part of the Master Teacher Project. Kanthack was one of 95 teachers selected from more than 1,200 applicants from across the country to participate in the project. “It’s all pretty exciting stuff. It has been the highlight of my career,” Kanthack said. “I’ve been really honored to be a part of such an amazing group of people.” Kanthack’s lessons all include hands-on activities with technology integration. Because her students all

work one-on-one with iPads, computers are utilized in the lessons. Kanthack has worked on a team of four teachers to develop engaging lessons. Two of the teachers are from Montana and the other one hails from Tennessee. Kanthack’s coach is a math curriculum director in Boston. The team meets virtually, online, on a regular basis. By November, 400,000 teachers had hit the site, which means that one in 10 teachers across the United States is using the website to help with their instruction, Kanthack said. The free site was developed as part of the Master Teacher Project to develop curriculum that would align with the Common Core standards, Kanthack said. “Common Core is wonderful, despite the bad press I’ve seen. I think it’s the best thing for mathematics that has rolled out,” Kanthack said. “My school district has used it now for three years, and in these three years, now the fourth year, I have seen tremendous growth in understanding, a better sense of how mathematics works.” In June, Kanthack was asked to stay on for another year to develop materials for the Next Generation Science Standards, which are slated to roll out across the nation in 2016, Kanthack said. “They align with Common Core. You can teach and integrate math and science and social studies and language arts and line that all up so you are making their instruction

very rich because of the integration of those materials,” Kanthack said. For example, Kanthack’s students began learning about erosion in Nepal by reading a book in literature class. Then the students wrote about Nepal. Then, the students learned about erosion in math, science and social studies classes. The students watched a video that pinpointed places of erosion and showed how erosion and weathering changes landscape over time. Then, Kanthack brought the lesson back to Wisconsin so that students could take a look at erosion and how it has affected the local area. “It is beautifully intermeshed and can be integrated very beautifully. So you have integration of math, language arts, social studies and science. It’s all together while you are meeting these standards. It helps teachers be able to kill a lot of birds with one stone,” Kanthack said. The Next Generation Science Standards is filled with connections to practical things, Kanthack said. “What excites me about it is that the kids look at that and then can look at the world, and go, ‘Yeah, I see where this fits.’ There are a lot of inquiry-based lessons, so you approach it with a wonder, or a question, saying, ‘What makes that light light up in that ball that I just got from Walmart when I bounce it and the lights are flashing inside it?’ And then you connect that to a circuit-

Kanthack is on a team of four science teachers from across the country who are working to develop curriculum that allows students to investigate through experimentation. “The interesting part is that it’s not instruction as much as it’s guidance, and it’s being very careful to ask the right questions to get them to think more deeply and to write better and to observe and to be able to use precise language,” Kanthack said. “So it supports all those very fundamental language arts, mathematical and critical thinking skills that kids today are really, really going to need to be able to be working in the world in the near future.” Kanthack, who entered the teaching profession later in life, graduated from Parkside in 1999. She earned her master’s degree from Aurora University and her national board certification in 2011. “Internetworking of teachers across the United States and seeing all these people that are so committed to education...it’s just a wonderful thing,” Kanthack said. “It really opened my eyes to how very rich and diverse our public education system is and what wonderful opportunities lie within, and also what deficits there are and the struggles that teachers are having with trying to meet those standards and meet those needs. So it has been a very eye-opening experience as well as a very enriching one.”

Wisconsin 4-H Foundation offers scholarships

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation plans to award more than $10,000 in scholarships to Wisconsin students pursuing undergraduate degrees in 2015. To be considered for financial support, applications must be received by the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation by March 15. Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance, financial need and future educational goals. Changes have been made to the application process to make it easier and more efficient for students to apply. To apply, interested 4-H youth need to submit an application consisting of a resume, cover letter, list of 4-H projects in which participated and recent photo, preferably at a 4-H event or working on a 4-H project. Applications should be limited to three pages and, along with the photo, submitted to and received by the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must: have been a 4-H member for at least one year; have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale; be enrolled or planning to enroll in a university, college or technical school during the 2015-2016 academic school year. “The generous support of our donors allows us to recognize and provide financial assistance to numerous students throughout the state,” says Jim Reid, president of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. “Awarding these scholarships is one way the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation continues its mission to invest in positive development of 4-H youth by helping them obtain their long-term goals of higher education.” Two teams of youth development professionals will review the applications and select finalists. The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation then will assign available scholarships to the top-ranking applications based on individual scholarship criteria. Applicants awarded scholarships will be notified by mail in May. Community colleges seek to offer fouryear degrees Illinois community college presidents approved a recommendation that the community college system be allowed to grant four-year baccalaureate degrees for nursing and other applied career areas at their meeting on Friday, Jan. 30. “This recommendation, which took nearly one year to study and prepare, shows our community colleges can be the place where students can earn the degrees close to home which is important to their families and communities,” said Thomas Choice, the president of the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents. Illinois would join 21 others states already offering these four-year degrees. Illinois officials have discussed the concept and experiences for families in other states for several years. “Our study indicates many employers across the state need a workforce with a higher level of education. A West Allis man who is believed to have killed two women, put their bodies in suitcases and dumped them in a ditch in the Town of Geneva is due back in court in Walworth County in May. Steven M. Zelich, 53, a former West Allis police officer, is suspected of killing Laura J. Simonson, 37, in Minnesota Steven M. in 2013 and Zelich Jenny Gamez, 19, in Kenosha in late 2012 or early 2013. Zelich was arrested after the bodies of the women were discovered in suitcases June 5 off North Como Road. He was first charged in Walworth County with two counts of hiding a corpse while investigations continued in the jurisdictions where the women are believed to have been killed. Zelich was charged in Kenosha County in August with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in connection with Gamez’s death. A final pre-trial conference is scheduled in that case for April 24 with jury selection set to begin for a trial there May 4. Zelich is being held in Kenosha County. Zelich has not yet been charged in Rochester, Minn., where Simonson is believed to have been killed. Police in Farmington, Minn., where Simonson lived when she was reported missing in November 2013 initially investigated the case, and Zelich

was the top suspect throughout the investigation. Police believe Simonson died during an encounter with Zelich at a hotel in Rochester, an hour away from Farmington, on Nov. 2, 2013. Lt. Casey Moilanen, of the Rochester, Minn., Police Department said last week the investigation is still open in Rochester. He said his department is waiting for information from the medical examiner in Walworth County where Simonson’s body was found and is still processing and testing other evidence, which he declined to give specifics about. Moilanen said Zelich will not be extradited to Minnesota until the cases against

hen Mark McAuliffe’s girlfriend threw him a 50th birthday party at their church with his grade-school friends on the guest list, he knew he wanted her to be his wife. “That day, I decided I was going to get married,”

McAuliffe said of the April 10 celebration his girlfriend of six years, Rebecca, organized at the new Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva. About a week after his birthday, Rebecca’s daughter, Kimberly Duckworth, asked the couple if they wanted to go to a gospel revival at the House of Blues in Chicago. They jumped at the chance, and McAuliffe decided he was going to propose that weekend. He bought a ring, and kept it in the backpack he carried around while the couple toured Chicago the day before the Sunday concert. McAuliffe said he was nervous about finding the opportune moment to pop the question, and his fiancé-to-be became suspicious. “She knew I was acting weird,” he said. “She was trying to get in my backpack.” The couple had a moment sitting on a park bench on Rush Street when McAuliffe gazed at Rebecca with a certain look in his eyes, and she thought the time had arrived. “He had been acting weird for days, and I was looking at him going, ‘What’s up with you?’” Rebecca said. When that moment passed without “the question,” Rebecca said, she thought it wasn’t going to happen. “At that point, I had resigned myself to the fact that he wasn’t ready,” she said.

So, the next day, when the couple was running late for the performance of William Smith Jr. and The Renewed Voices For Christ, Rebecca was no longer suspicious. McAuliffe said the couple entered Chicago’s famed House of Blues, and the place was packed. Amid the bustle, he handed the tickets to the guy at the counter and wondered how he would pull it off. “I was nervous,” he said. Rebecca went to get some food, and he wondered if he should ask the sound guy about helping him set up a proposal while she was gone. Rebecca came back, and spilled her coffee, and before he knew it, the curtain was coming up. “I said, ‘I blew it,’” McAuliffe said. “’I don’t know how I’m going to do it now.’” William Smith Jr. and The Renewed Voices For Christ sang but then began calling out names of people having birthdays and inviting them to the stage. The announcer called a woman’s name first and then asked for “Eric” to come forward. “I said, ‘There’s my in,’” McAuliffe said. He rushed to the stage, beating “Eric” there and leaving Rebecca asking, “Where is he going?” Rebecca said she didn’t think much of McAuliffe’s

(Continued from page 10) rush to the stage since he’d just had a birthday, but, at that point, the announcer was calling people by name. “Mark made a beeline up there when they were calling specific people,” she said. When McAuliffe got to the stage, he encountered the group’s host Cedric Nunley, who asked, “Are you Eric?” When McAuliffe pulled Nunley aside and said he wasn’t Eric but wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Nunley got wide-eyed and said, “Ooooh.” He told McAuliffe to stand to the side of the stage next to a speaker, but then McAuliffe realized he forgot the ring and ran back to his seat to retrieve it. When he knelt down to get the ring out of his backpack, Duckworth, who suspected the pending proposal, made eye contact with McAuliffe and began to cry. Rebecca said she’d seen McAuliffe talking to Nunley on stage, then standing to the side, and, when he returned to the table, she thought he was done with whatever he was doing on stage. The backpacks were behind her, so she didn’t see him rifling around in his. “But then he makes a beeline back to the stage, and I looked at my daughter, and said, ‘Do you know what’s going on?’” Rebecca said. She said Duckworth slowly nodded with tears in her eyes then darted away to videotape what was about to happen. “So they left me sitting at that table by myself, and I am literally panicking,” she said. “Is he going to tell them to make me sing … all kinds of things going through my head.” McAuliffe realized when he returned to the stage that word had spread about his plan among the gospel singers. He noticed the women of The Renewed Voices for Christ smiling at him as he removed the oversized boxes from the ring and slipped it on his pinky finger. Then Nunley called McAuliffe over. “I’m in the middle of the stage,” McAuliffe said. “There’s like 500 people.” Nunley summoned Becky down, and she danced her way to the stage. McAuliffe popped the question, and Rebecca turned her face and pointed to her cheek for a kiss. She said yes, and the crowd went wild.

After the gospel concert, The Renewed Voices of Christ member Richard Douglas approached McAuliffe and said his was the first proposal the group – which has been together for 25 years – had had during a performance. He invited

McAuliffe, Rebecca and Duckworth to tour the House of Blues, gave them a bottle of champagne and asked them to have their picture taken with the group. The couple obliged, and asked if the group would sing at Immanuel Lutheran in Lake Geneva. When the group agreed, McAuliffe asked, “How about a wedding?” On Oct. 4, William Smith Jr. and The Renewed Voices of Christ – a group from community churches in Chicago who began singing together as teenagers – performed at the nuptials of Mark and Rebecca McAuliffe. Group member Christopher Hall said the Chicago-area group had not sung in Wisconsin before but didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation. “Whoever beckons us, we always come,” he said. Mark McAuliffe kept the visiting performers a secret from his wedding guests. Duckworth’s video of McAuliffe’s House of Blues proposal played on the church’s big screen as guests became suspicious of the rustling of people they heard in the sanctuary. When the Rev. MaryAnn Moller-Gunderson proclaimed, “Let the celebration begin,” the booming a capella sound of the gospel singers let loose. “They were just so cool,” McAuliffe said. “I can’t say enough how cool they were.” And, Immanuel Lutheran Church welcomed them with open arms, he said. “Everybody really loved them,” said Rebecca McAuliffe. “Immanuel really came through for us. It’s not a very diverse area, and we weren’t sure how well they’d be received.” The group stayed to play at the McAuliffe’s reception – held in the hall attached to the new church at 700 N. Bloomfield Road, and then stayed overnight to sing at Immanuel Lutheran’s services Sunday morning. “They got a five-minute standing ovation,” McAuliffe said. “They just blew it away.” “We came for the wedding, and we had such a great time,” Hall said. “Everybody enjoyed us so much, they asked us to stay over for the service.”

Rebecca McAuliffe said the group’s performance – a celebration of 25 years together – is very personal for her and her husband, and a testament to the warmth of Immanuel Lutheran’s congregation. “It’s amazing,” she said. Hall said the group is excited to return to Lake Geneva as a featured act at Immanuel Lutheran. “I have been to a million churches in my lifetime, and I can by far say this is one of the most loving, most welcoming,” he said. “It was phenomenal.”

of the group and attended a service at one of their neighborhood churches in Chicago around Christmas. “You want to talk about killing it,” Mark McAuliffe said. “I mean, I had chills just listening to it.” On Saturday – the day after Mark McAuliffe’s 10year anniversary of sobriety – The Renewed Voices For Christ will present a gospel revival from 7 to 9 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. McAuliffe has sold 300 tickets for the performance at the church, which holds 425 people. The cost is $10 per ticket. Tickets are available in the church office or by calling McAuliffe at (262) 215-3900. If the event is not sold out, tickets will be available at the door.

Gospel group formed after high school in Chicago area By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

The group William Smith Jr. and The Renewed Voices of Christ began 25 years ago when high school choir members didn’t let graduation stop them from singing. Christopher Hall, a 12-year member of the group, said the original members were part of the Hyde Park High School choir in Chicago. “What happened was that the guys that were in the high school choir graduated and they wanted to continue to sing,” Hall said. So, they met at a former choir member’s mother’s house and founded their own group. Today, the group is 23 members strong. It has multiple members who have been with the group for more than two decades and others who have come and gone, but only two founding members – William “Billy” Smith Jr. and Cedric Nunley. Hall said Smith is the organist and founder. “He does everything,” he said. For 15 years, the group has performed regularly at the House of Blues in Chicago and has appeared with such gospel greats as Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Richard Smallwood and Bishop Walter Hawkins. The group also performed on The Oprah Winfrey Show with Maya Angelou. “It’s been an exciting ride,” Hall said. “We minister to all kinds of audiences.” He said the group has retained a core group of 15 to 20, and, at one point, had as many as 40 members. Hall said the members are from throughout the Chicago area and attend many different churches in Chicagoland. “We all come together to sing,” he said.
