Suitcase murder suspect set for trial in May

Officials elsewhere await outcome of Kenosha case By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

‘Science’ class in session

The band Weird Science of Kenosha made a special appearance at Lakewood School in Twin Lakes recently. The school earned the concert because students met school goals for improving Measures of Academic Progress test scores from fall to winter. The goal for improvement was 3,000 points as a school. The students finished with a total growth rate of 5,217.

A West Allis man who is believed to have killed two women, put their bodies in suitcases and dumped them in a ditch in the Town of Geneva is on track to be tried for murder in Kenosha County in May. Steven M. Zelich, 53, a former West Allis police officer, is suspected of killing Laura J. Simonson, 37, in Minnesota in 2013 and Jenny Gamez, 19, in Kenosha in late 2012 or early 2013. Zelich was arrested after the bodies of the women were discovered in suitcases June 5 off North Como Road. He was first charged in Walworth County with two counts of hiding a corpse while investigations continued in the jurisdictions where the women are believed to have been killed. Zelich was charged in Kenosha County in August with first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse in connection with Gamez’s death. A final pre-trial confer-

ence is scheduled in that case for April 24 with jury selection set to begin for a trial there May 4. Zelich is being held in Kenosha County. Zelich has not yet been charged in R o c h e s t e r, Steven Zelich Minn., where Simonson is believed to have been killed. Police in Farmington, Minn., where Simonson lived when she was reported missing in November 2013, initially investigated the case, and Zelich was the top suspect throughout the investigation. Police have said they suspect Simonson died during an encounter with Zelich at a hotel in Rochester, an hour away from Farmington, on Nov. 2, 2013. Lt. Casey Moilanen, of the

Things that go thump in the attic

Loud thumping resonates from upstairs and shakes the house. Repeatedly. It sounds like bodies hitting walls and furniture being thrown about, which is probably pretty accurate. I pause and wonder if – or when – I should go up. Then I take my next turn at Trivia Crack. The thumping continues. Boys. They are messy and rough. They push and pull and wrestle in the living room. They break windows. When you bring them to the store, they find it difficult to look at items without also touching and moving and holding and throwing – especially if the item is a football. They make

counting. They turned my world kitty-wampus with toy cars in the toilet, escaped tree frogs in the bedroom, spray paint in the bathroom and thumping in the attic. They did all those things when they were little. And they were boys. Now they have grown – for the most part. Two of them tower over me. Their voices are deep; their shoe sizes double digits. They no longer practice the behaviors of boyhood and are closer to – almost, nearly – men. Save for the youngest. Our little caboose as my husband likes to call him. He’s still a boy and was the cause, most recently, for the thumps in the

smashing and thumping noises in the attic. I wasn’t cut out to have boys. Not in the plural sense. I wanted a boy. One token male to give a brother to the girls I planned to have. Girls, as in plural. Those were my plans. Isn’t it funny how life turns out sometimes? I got boys in the plural form. Three if you are

attic. With the others, I would have rushed up to stop their rambunctious behavior. To make sure no one got hurt or put an eye out. I might have even scolded them for being boisterous. For being boys. Our last son has a different mom. I’m the same person, but I’m a different mom with him than with the others. I guess each of them had a unique mom who was all me. It’s impossible to be the same from one day to the next. Life changes a person in increments. Our youngest son changes us. He keeps us young and gives us gray hairs all at the same time. He’s our

last great crescendo – and what a symphony he is. He embodies life and embraces it with enthusiasm, joy and the occasional thump in the attic. He’s the child who, if he brings one friend home from school, figures he might as well make it five. And he does so with regularity. Since he is the last, I don’t object because I know from his siblings that this stage, like all stages, is fleeting and it won’t be long before the 12-year-olds playing upstairs will have car keys in their pockets and girls on the brain; my attic will soon be abandoned, boy-less and free from thumps. So I’m not in a big rush

to run up and scold them anymore. Most of the time nothing gets broken and we’ve yet to put an eye out, thank goodness. Besides, how much damage can six 12-year-old boys cause? Never mind. Pretend I didn’t ask that question. For now, I stand in the kitchen, cherishing the thumps as well as the knowledge that our youngest son is a wonder, as they all are. But he is our last – our grand swan song of parenthood – and that is cause for reverence and gratitude for things as they are right now, today, at this very moment. Thumps and all. Especially that last really loud one. On second thought, maybe I better go check on them.

Changes to Kia Sedona up the ‘wow’ factor By Barbara Schaffer AUTO DIGEST

I happen to be one of those people who likes minivans (Kia prefers to call them multi-purpose vehicles) because they are so practical, versatile and comfortable, so I was excited to try out the 2015 Kia Sedona. Like most of the latest new Kia products, the new Sedona gets a major styling change – in this case it was from “ho hum” to “wow.” Orth Hedrick, vice president of product planning, Kia Motors America summed it up like this, “The all-new Sedona is the final model to undergo Kia’s design-led transformation under the direction of chief design officer Peter Schreyer.” He continued, “Beneath the strong lines is a vehicle designed for today’s active lifestyles with more power than the previous Sedona, a longer wheelbase for improved leg room and unique seating configurations, including available ‘First Class’ second-row seats. Combined with intuitive technology and safety, the Sedona brings new levels of sophistication to a segment that’s been filled with bland and predictable practicality.” The horizontal styling

treatments on the front and rear surfaces make the Sedona look lower, wider and more muscular. The signature Kia “Tiger Nose” grille, defines the front fascia and chrome accents give the Sedona a more elegant, upscale persona. The rear end continues the wide look with strong horizontal lines and an integrated over-window spoiler treatment. Design magic lends itself to the Sedona interior where there’s more room in most areas while the size of the Sedona actually shrinks a tad. The dash area is driver-friendly with large controls and instruments, well organized in horizontal pods. Shoppers can select from seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations along with a multitude of convenient storage spaces. An available feature of the seven-passenger seating is Kia’s new “first-class” lounge seating that can be moved back to create extra legroom and space for the retractable lower-leg rests that give recliner-like comfort. The available first-class treatment extends to airplane-style winged headrests and heated cushions. Parents will want their children to grow up quickly so the kids

can drive and the parents can enjoy in the second row seating. The second row seats are also part of the Side-N-Stow system. The seats can be folded upright to allow for “on-the-go” cargo hauling without having to remove the seats. Cargo space is a spacious 33.9-cubic feet with all three rows of seating in place and can be expanded in stages to as much at 142 cubic feet with all the seats folded and stowed. Parents will also appreciate the standard YES Essentials™ fabric technology which provides anti-microbial protection from spills, anti-static protection from irritating electrical shocks as well as stain-repelling and stain-releasing fabric characteristics. The posh leather seat option is the same as is used in the Kia K900 luxury sedan. The 2015 Kia Sedona is a totally new product starting from the ground up. It’s built on an all-new chassis, which Kia says has a “static torsional stiffness that is 36-percent greater than its closest segment competitor.” The body is 76 percent Advanced High Strength Steel or Press Hardened Steel, which provides exceptional

If a driver likes a minivan, the changes to the Kia Sedona make it flexible and comfortable, as well as increasing the wow factor.

rigidity, durability and collision protection in a lightweight design. A new 276-hp 3.3-liter V-6 engine replaces the previous 3.5-liter V-6 and hooks up through Kia’s sixspeed Sport-Matic automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. The EPA fuel economy is rated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The new Sedonas are equipped with all the safety technologies like stability control, traction control, brake assist, hill-start assist, brake force distribution and

antilock braking. They also have standard Roll-Over Mitigation and Cornering Brake Control. Available are additional features like Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Surround View Monitor which shows real-time images all around the vehicle on the large display screen. Modern digital families will appreciate the high-power (2.1 Amp) USB charging ports and 115-volt AC outlets. Another handy optional features is the “Smart Power

Liftgate,” which opens automatically when the vehicle key fob is detected near the liftgate for three seconds; it can also be programmed to open to a certain height to avoid obstacles like low garage doors. Kia pricing for the five available trim levels is $25,900 for the L, $28,100 for the LX, $32,100 for the EX, $36,100 for the SX and $39,700 for the SX Limited. An $895 destination charge is added to all prices. The SX Limited with all the available options tops out at $43,295.

Silver Lake police chief leaves department Trudeau resigned amid false accusations of misused funds

CORRESPONDENT

What turned out to be false accusations of the misuse of funds has prompted Silver Lake part-time police chief Andy Trudeau to retire. After 11 years with the department, Trudeau submitted a letter announcing his retirement Feb. 12. In an email statement, Trudeau wrote, “I have grown tired of the uphill battles proving I was doing the right things for the village only to have to watch my back at every turn, that is why I retired.” As of last week there was no word regarding plans to replace Trudeau. An investigation by the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department cleared Trudeau of any wrongdoing in the funding of a remodeling project at the Silver Lake Village Hall. Just days before the Nov. 4 election, the Village Hall meeting room was refurbished. The layout of the room was changed, with the new board podium placed lengthwise rather than at the far end. Village President Sue Gerber explained

that she is hearing impaired and often had difficulty hearing anything from the far end of the meeting room. “Now, everyone is much closer and its easier for me to hear,” she said. When Trustee Pat Dunn arrived to vote on that election day, he said he was in shock. “There had been no discussion about the work,” Dunn said. Dunn became suspicious about the funding of the project based on a comment made by Gerber that the money came from a drug forfeiture and information from an unnamed source. Dunn requested that the sheriff’s department look into allegations of misappropriation of funds to pay for materials to refurbish the meeting room. If the information was true and the case went to trial and the defendant was not convicted on the drug offense, the department would have had to return the money. Trudeau was able to show investigators that the money was still in evidence. According to the investigation report, “…Trudeau told him (Dunn) that

the money came from the police budget and that he (Trudeau) could use forfeited drug seizure money to offset the cost of the project expense.” In his testimony to a detective, Trudeau said he believed that two former Silver Lake police officers gave false information to Dunn in order to get back at Trudeau, since he was given the police chief job. According to the report, Trudeau also claimed that former Police Chief Dan Kingsley was unhappy with him since Trudeau made the chief’s job part-time. Trudeau claimed that Kingsley had returned from Texas and wanted the fulltime chief position back. Trudeau supplied the detective with copies of the purchase orders involved with the remodel project and a signed statement from Clerk/Treasurer Terry Faber. That statement said that no money was transferred from police evidence to the general fund for the project. The report also stated that Gerber approved the project. There was, however, no board discussion regarding the project or the

The Kenosha Area Noon Optimist Club’s annual “Great Kenosha Pizza BakeOff” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at the UAW Local 72 Headquarters, 3615 Washington Road. Attendees can sample over 30 pizzas served from local pizza establishments all under one roof, and vote for your favorite tasting pizza to win this year’s “People’s Choice Award.” Generous pizza bakers donating and serving their creations at this year’s event are: Baker Street, Casa Capri, Frankie D’s, Jimano’s, Luigi’s, Marco’s, Mickey Angelo’s, Slice of NY, Snapfire Grill and Pub, Tazinos, Toppers and more. There will be a silent auction, entertainment by Bill Lynch; a special appearance by Miss Kenosha 2015 Kiersten Gonzales; and a visit from popular local mascots, like Torchie from Carthage, Trojan from Tremper, and Kenosha Kingfish Mascot, King Elvis just to name a few. Beverages will be provided, as will cupcakes by Linnea Bakery, Kandra’s Cupcakes and Robin’s Nest (Continued from front page) The more severe charges in Kenosha County take precedence over the Walworth County charges. HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25, 2015 • 9

• Time is now with sick children, cancer patients who need almost daily treatments, dialysis patients, working families and senior citizens with chronic illnesses are all so grateful for Fox Charities and all of your generous support to this area of need. God bless all of you and Fox Charities for removing the stress and worry over safe, reliable transportation. Dental care – $1,675 Fox Charities Christmas Wish $25,000 matching grant and all of you have removed the excruciating dental pain for a senior citizen in our community. She suffered greatly as she did not have the money necessary to have the much-needed dental work completed. Her gratitude after the procedure was overwhelming and tearful. Removing the very real pain of poverty by providing life-changing dental assistance seems to be the most appreciated. If you have ever had dental pain, you understand why, and, for most of us, our dentist is only an emergency phone call away. Within hours, we are able to pay for the treatments necessary to remove the agony. For so many of our povertystricken fellow creations they suffer for months waiting for dental clinics if they are lucky enough to get to one. In those months, they are unable to sleep or eat properly. Now you know why those who receive this assistance cry with relief and gratitude for all of you and Fox Charities. Handicap assistance – $2,924.09 Living in a wheel chair and being poverty-stricken is one of the hardest struggles we encounter. The need for transportation in the nonhandicap accessible area we live in is vital to many for survival. Handicap accessible vans are requested almost weekly. The Time Is Now to Help began helping the

(Continued from page 5)

handicapped more than 30 years ago. We began by providing specialized wheelchairs to people who suffered extreme disabilities and could not afford supportive wheelchairs. Now we focus more on handicapaccessible vans and the repairs needed to keep them working. Thanks to Fox Charities and all of you, a woman who has spent most her life in a wheelchair was able to have her handicap lift repaired on her van. It was not operational, so she was living without any transportation even though her vehicle was in working order. Now thanks to this repair she is able to use the lift to get herself in the vehicle and transfer herself to the driver’s seat. She is able to get to therapy, doctors appointments and food shop. We together have restored her independence. Toiletries – $700 Soap, shampoo, diapers, feminine hygiene, tooth paste, tooth brushes, combs, toilet paper and many other items are the first things eliminated from budgets when you are struggling in poverty. Shelter, food, transportation, utilities and many other expenses will come before toiletries. It is a great hardship for those living without these items. Babies without diapers, children without toothpaste and toothbrushes, lack of shampoo and soap all have a great effect on your health and well being. They also are necessary for job success, dental health and personal hygiene. Together we have provided the tools needed to maintain pride and physical wellbeing. Grand total – $50,000 Every penny you donated, matched by Fox Charities Christmas Wish $25,000 matching grant went to assist the poverty-stricken. Together we provided $50,000 in desperately needed poverty relief. Prior to our help, our fellow creations were living in the confusion and fear of poverty, not having enough food for their children, not knowing where to get help for shelter when they were facing

Native trees available through program A wide variety of trees and shrubs are available for sale through the Kenosha County Tree Program. Kenosha County has offered these native species for more than 25 years and, in that time, nearly one million trees have been sold. The purpose of the program is to promote conservation and to help area residents to plant a more beautiful, healthy and ecologically balanced environment. The program offers transplants and seedlings of a variety of pines, hardwoods and shrubs in bundles of 25 at a cost of $20 to $25 per bundle. Varieties of trees and shrubs change from year-to-year depending upon availability, performance and demand trends.

This year Black Hills spruce, frasier fir, white Pine, black Walnut, hazelnut, dogwood, serviceberry, chestnut, lilacs, birch, oaks, and maple trees will be available. The sale is open to the public. Order forms can be obtained at the Department of Planning and Development, 19600 75th Street in Bristol, or visit online at www. kenoshacounty.org/DocumentCenter/View/1670. Group that restores airplanes offers kids life lessons By Heather Ruenz STAFF WRITER

A

lot is happening any given Saturday morning in Palmyra. There, a group of area kids are learning about airplanes from their mentors – pilots and some of their parents – and gaining much more in the process. The motto created by the five founders of 88Charlies, Inc. six years ago, when they launched the program, is: “We don’t build airplanes with kids, we build kids with airplanes.” “We formed the group to promote technical skills while offering kids an opportunity to explore aviation – as a career, hobby or both,” said Steve Sorge, one of the founders. “The groups’ goals are not necessarily to get an airplane built, but to get students and adults involved in the building process.” During that process, Sorge said, students also develop skills in program management, responsibility, accountability, mutual respect, teamwork and leadership. In addition to Sorge, the founders include Mike Rosman and his father, the late Bill Rosman; Alan Borre; and Dave McCoy. Though initially only boys participated, now a few girls make their way to Palmyra each Saturday – including Caitlin Lamb, 14, from Waukesha. “We found out about this from neighbors of ours who come here,” Lamb’s mom, Marsha, said Feb. 7 at the 88Charlies class.

“When Caitlin said she wanted to be a pilot, I knew this was the perfect place for her to start.” Borre was working side-byside with Lamb that day. They were making a metal plate to cover a hole in a piece of the airplane body that had previously housed a wind generator. “Now, Ms. Caitlin, we need a Cleco pin that will spread out slightly once we put it through the two pieces of metal. That will hold it in place while you drill holes in them,” Borre said. When Lamb finished the task, Sorge asked her to hold it up so he could take a photo of her with it. She obliged with a smile on her face. Standing a few feet away – and smiling just as proudly – was Borre. Lessons to be taught Even when there is a lull – if it can be labeled as such – the mentors use every opportunity possible to teach the kids something new. At one point during the Feb. 7 class, Sorge helped a few kids draw, and then cut, letters out of sheet metal even though they won’t be used on an airplane. “Only so many people can work on the engine at once,” Sorge said. “But there are always things that can be taught… skills that the kids will use later.” Over the years, 88Charlies, a 501(c)3 public charity, has logged more than 15,000 hours of accumulated volunteer work with related public charities, local fundraisers and corporatesponsored events through General Electric.

Get involved Most of the money the group receives through private and corporate donations and fundraisers goes back to the kids. For every 20 hours of work students put in at the shop, they earn a one-hour flight lesson, paid for by 88Charlies. Students have to be 13 years old to begin flying gliders but once they’re 15 they can begin flight lessons in planes and are eligible to obtain a pilot’s license at the age of 17. The group is in the process of restoring its own plane – a 1946 Taylercraft BC12D, powered by a Continental A75 engine. “It was sitting for about 20 years at the Oconomowoc airport,” Rosman said. “We are dedicating it to Standard Process for all of the generosity that they have given to us. We plan to keep it, and use it to train the students that want to learn to fly.” The group meets from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, year-round, in the second building east of Standard Process’ Vita Kids Center on Royal Lee Drive in the Palmyra Industrial Park on Highway 59. They are always in need of tools and supplies for the shop and also accept monetary donations, which can be mailed to: 88Charlies, Inc., P.O. Box 1, Eagle, WI, 53119. Goals remain the same There is no cost to kids who join the program. Parents and other adult mentors are not only invited to join in, they are essential to the goals of the program. “When a new kid joins, the parents bring them, get a tour of the facility and sign a release. We really encourage the parents to stay involved, though, as it will give them quality time with their kids, learning things together,” Rosman said. Though Rosman is a founder and longtime mentor of the program, he is also a parent – working alongside his sons, Matt and Jack, on Saturday mornings. Rob Crisp, who has been involved since shortly after the group formed, has two sons who have participated. His oldest, Austin, is now a sophomore at the University of Dayton in Ohio studying Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on Aerospace. “I really enjoyed watching them learn things and work with their hands,” Crisp said. “I like planes and enjoy the time here with all of the people involved in it. It’s a great group.” Greg Steinlage and all three of his kids participate in 88Charlies. “It’s fun to watch all of the kids that are part of this. They start out a little timid but then we watch them grow, build courage and gain self confidence and pride in what they’re doing here,” Steinlage said. The current student body includes kids from Eagle, Palmyra, Hartland, Whitewater, Mukwonago, Fort Atkinson, Oconomowoc, Waukesha and Sheboygan. 88Charlies is open to anyone. Levi Musselman, a 12-year old from Eagle, lives across the street from Sorge. Though he has only been coming to the shop for a few months, Musselman has already worked on four planes. “Welding is my favorite part, and working with my hands,” Musselman said. Luke Bultman, 16, of Whitewater, has participated since he was 9. “Mr. Ron (Nelson), who knew about it, asked my mom if he could take me. I was pretty shy and he thought it would be good for me,” Bultman said. One of Bultman’s favorite stories from

the hundreds of Saturdays he has spent in the shop revolves around a math problem. “I listened to what they said, kind of did it in my head and then told them what I thought the answer was,” Bultman said. His answer, he said, was within a few hundredths of a fraction of what the pilots had come up with. Bultman, who took his first flight through 88Charlies when he was 9, has now had numerous flight lessons. One of his goals once he turns 17 is to get his pilot’s license. “It’s a great group of guys who taught me a lot, not just about airplanes but also about how to be a young man, how to speak properly and how to listen. There are a lot of great mentors there,” Bultman said. Nelson, a self-described “adopted grandpa” can’t say enough good things about Bultman and 88Charlies. “They are doing great things here and watching Luke grow has been more amazing than I even imagined,” Nelson said.

company, the group now has a building that better suits its needs. Standard Process, Inc., whose headquarters are in Palmyra, allows the group to use a building it owns free of charge and also pays all of the associated overhead costs.
