Bianchi’s art lives on in his hometown Display features work for National Geographic
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Over the years there have been many residents of Kenosha who have achieved greatness. Peter V. Bianchi was one such resident who used his talent to achieve worldwide recognition for his illustrations for National Geographic Magazine. Over the course of his professional career, Bianchi drew many prehistoric illustrations and in later life moved his focus to religious representations. Bianchi made his entrance into the world in Kenosha on Oct. 18, 1920. His parents, immigrants from Italy, owned a retail business where Bianchi enjoyed perusing the magazines sold there and found the illustrations that accompanied the articles fascinating. It was from these magazines that he furthered his interested in pursuing a career as an artist. After graduating from Bradford High School in Kenosha, Bianchi went on to study art in Chicago at the Mitzen Academy, the Chica-

Changing behaviors Jendusa-Nicolai joined the Women’s Resource Center in holding a vigil for Quintero-Montoya in Burlington last week. “You can build so many shelters, and you can have so many advocates, and you can counsel, counsel, counsel,” Jendusa-Nicolai said. “But if that perpetrator doesn’t change his behavior, we’re still going to have this issue. “What we need to focus on (is) getting these people not to be perpetrators,” she added. Education is key, she said. She’s taken the time to talk to
middle school and high school students about dating violence, discussing the cycles of violence as well as low self-esteem leading to the abuse. “This is not how we treat people,” Jendusa-Nicolai said about the lesson she teaches. “We need to build people’s self-esteem.” Strides have been made, though. “We have more people getting out of these situations, getting into shelters,” she said. That effort is taking another step forward. The Women’s Resource Center is working to open a Western Racine County shelter in Dover – at the former Dover School. WRC Executive Director Cherie Griffin confirmed last week that negotiations for the building have begun, and Schmaling and Jendusa-Nicolai both mentioned fundraising for that shelter coming in the next two months. Schmaling called Quintero-Montoya’s death a tragedy. He also pointed out that if someone is “bent on evil,” the system might not be able to stop that person. But the work that is being done – he is also on the board of directors for the Women’s Resource Center – helps. “If we can prevent even one situation from turning deadly, this is all for good,” he said. “We are doing everything within our abilities to keep victims of domestic violence safe.”

Dedicated to help Jendusa-Nicolai has dedicated a great deal of time since to help alleviate the issues surrounding domestic violence. Part of the problem, she said, was that when she was almost killed by her ex-husband, the punishments were too light. “If the punishment is too light, people will continue to get worse and worse,” said Jendusa-Nicolai, who was beaten by her ex-husband for years before she fled, got a divorce and remarried. “It’s just like a kid,” she added. “If you’re grounded for five minutes … you’re going to try to push the envelope further.” Since then, she and Schmaling have worked almost handin-hand to try to change the laws, including beefing up restraining order laws, Jendusa-Nicolai said. For example, people with a
restraining order against them have to turn in weapons to law enforcement officials within 48 hours – or face arrest. GPS monitoring bracelets can also be used to track the effectiveness of restraining orders. “That’s been Teri’s mission, to reach out to as many victims as possible … to give them tools to get out of an abusive relationship,” Schmaling said. Jendusa-Nicolai also said, though, that Schmaling’s dedication to the cause has helped. ‘I think we are so fortunate to have, in Racine County, to have a sheriff and detectives who are really concerned about this problem,” she explained. “I think we’re really blessed to have men and women on our team. We’re really blessed to have some good judges in Racine County, too.”
COUPON
said about a recent conversation with Jendusa-Nicolai, about how each link in the case led to her being found and rescued. “If any one of those links had not fallen in place, we would not have the same result that we do, and that is Teri being alive. “She is a very lucky, very fortunate and very blessed individual to be alive,” he added. “And she clearly knows that, by virtue of the work she’s been doing.”

When a Burlington area resident was murdered in an apparent domestic violence incident March 22, it came about a day after the anniversary of one of the most notorious domestic violence incidents in the state. Burlington resident Francisca Quintero-Montoya died last week, after her husband allegedly stabbed her three times with a screwdriver at an in Elk Grove, Ill., hospital. Her estranged husband has since been charged with murder. The incident came less than 24 hours after a movie about the plight of Teri Jendusa-Nicolai aired on television. Jendusa-Nicolai, who lived in the Town of Norway, survived a more-than 20-hour long ordeal at the hands of her ex-husband in 2004. She was beaten severely, then stuffed in an empty garbage can and left to die in a storage facility in Illinois. While the incident stretched over two days, the movie that aired on March 21, “In An Instant,” on ABC lasted about two hours. Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling, who was involved in the case, said those two hours did a solid job of recounting the tale. But he also acknowledged how lucky Jendusa-Nicolai had been. “We discussed just how fortunate she was,” Schmaling

Students step up for their veteran heroes Randall Student Council presents $1,500 Honor Flight program
By Anne Trautner STAFF WRITER
When Charles (Chuck) Franzke was a World War II Navy fighter pilot, he landed his plane more than 70 times on a moving aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Landing a plane on a 100foot landing strip was a difficult task that left no room for error, he said. However, he said he wasn’t exceptional for having done the job. “I am not a hero. The guys that did not return are the heroes, Franzke told Randall Consolidated School students last Friday. “You ARE a hero! many of the students echoed back to him in the distance. Presentation Bob Morrison, a representative of the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight organization, chimed in with the students, saying Franzke is a hero. A veteran himself, Morrison served in the Korean conflict. He served a two-year term in the military from 1969 to 1971 and worked as a duty guard for the United Nations Honor Guard.
Morrison presented Franzke with a Challenge Coin, a special honor and award presented to individuals who have shown special support for veterans and the Stars and Stripes Honors Organization. Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to send World War II and Korean Conflict veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials built in their honor. Over the past year, the Randall Student Council has been doing various fundraisers for Stars and Stripes. On Friday, the student council presented Morrison with a check for $1,500 to send three veterans to Washington, D.C., on an Honors Flight. The Student Council has been raising money for this same cause for several years. In all, the council has now sent seven veterans to Washington, D.C., said Karen Reddin, gifted and talented coordinator for Randall. This year, the student council raised the money through a Culver’s Night in Burlington and a Santa’s Workshop. In return, Morrison presented Principal Erin Zigler
with a commemorative Honors Flight book for the Randall School library. Morrison also gave Zigler Partner School certificates to be displayed on the school entrance windows. Morrison showed a short video so students could see what a day is like for the veterans who go on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. “I actually had to walk out during the video because I was so emotional watching those veterans, Reddin said. “It took my breath away. Franzke told the students that the trip was memorable and that he still gets kind of choked up just thinking about how people treated them like they were royalty. The veterans had a motorcade and police escort as they traveled through Washington, D.C. “We felt like we were the President of the United States, Franzke said. Relating to students Franzke, 92, traveled to Randall with his wife of 70 years, Beverly Franzke, and Morrison to Randall School last week.

Bob Morrison (left) of the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight program and veteran Chuck Franzke (right) receive a $1,500 check from Randall School students McKinley Boyle, Skyler Cordova recently. The student council raised the money – enough to send three veterans on the honor flight – by hold several fundraising events this school year.
Franzke joked and told the students that sometimes cute girls will give him a hug or a kiss, and he lives for that. A group of girls promptly lined up and gave Franzke a hug. “It was so sweet, Reddin said. One girl, with tears in her eyes, told Franzke that she had lost both her grandpas, and they both had been veterans. “I think it was not just an excellent opportunity for our kids to learn, but also to feel,
Reddin said. “Unless you actually sometimes see what you are giving to, you don’t know. These kids learned history. It’s not the present, they don’t feel it. But I think on Friday they felt it, they actually got it. Reddin hopes it will help the students gain more respect for veterans and all they have done. “Maybe some of them will actually go into the military, which also would be a great thing for the country, Reddin said.
Child dies from injuries suffered in ATV crash A 10-year-old boy from the Town of Dover in Racine County has died as the result of injuries suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident March 30. Timothy James Jorgenson died Thursday at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, according to information from the Racine County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office and Kansasville Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched at 4:18 p.m. to the 300 block of South Beaumont Avenue in the

Franzke told the nearly 160 students about his experience serving in World War II. The students were silent as they listened. “I was enthralled by the fact that our kids were so mesmerized by the whole event. For most of the entire presentation, you could have heard a pin drop, Reddin said. “It warms my heart to know that kids feel that strong patriotism and that great valor in our veterans, totally respectful. Students wanted to know if it had been scary to be in the Navy. Franzke told them he had never been engaged in battle. Franzke, who enlisted in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, told them that one of the most frightening experiences was when he accidentally flew over an Army gunnery base on a foggy night while training overseas. That was a big problem, he said. Flying in formation also was extremely tense, Franzke said. Pilots need to rely on their peripheral vision because the planes’ wings are so close together, he said. “He is just a remarkable man, Reddin said of Franzke. “He’s a very humble man and was very appreciative. He didn’t want any recognition, he just wanted to share. The students seemed to really connect with Franzke. When his talk was finished, students lined up to shake Franzke’s hand.
Town of Dover for a single all-terrain vehicle accident. Officers determined the 10-year-old ATV operator, who was wearing a helmet, was riding on private property when the crash occurred.
Flight for Life helicopter responded. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Programs for kids planned at Pringle Registration is beginning for summer programs for children at Pringle Nature Center, 9800 160th Ave, Bristol. Pringle offers day programs that will have children doing hands-on, experiential learning in nature. Junior Nat-

many young men of the time, enlisted in the Army to serve his country. He served in a variety of roles in the service, including as a member of the OSS, which we now know was a forerunner of the CIA. In Italy, Corsica, and North Africa, Bianchi worked in the Signal Corps. After his service, Bianchi opened a studio in Kenosha and began working as an independent artist earning commissions from his projects. One of these projects was for National Geographic Magazine where he was given the opportunity to work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, which had recently been uncovered. This was his first work for National Geographic but it certainly was not to be his last. Impressed with his illus-
trations, National Geographic invited him to accept a position as a permanent member of the staff. At the time he was hired, Bianchi was one of the two staff artists that were full time at the magazine. Working for National Geographic required a move from Kenosha to Washington D. C. where he remained for the next 14 years. Preparation for accurate renderings required spending hours researching all the known information on the subject, including literature and visits to various museums and interviews with their curators before work began on the illustration itself. Bianchi retired from National Geographic in 1974 to

return to Kenosha and care for his mother. The move to Kenosha changed Bianchi’s artistic focus. He began to pursue religious painting. A major change in the life of the 61-year-old bachelor occurred in 1981 when he married Elizabeth. Bianchi died on Jan. 3, 2001, but continues to live on in Kenosha’s memory. His widow donated the National Geographic Collection of Peter’s work to the Kenosha Public Museum. His realistic and historically correct illustrations provide an accurate depiction of the prehistoric humans and animals that roamed the earth long ago. The exhibit also contains an artist’s studio where local artists spend time working on projects while visitors observe the process. The work is on display on the second floor of the museum. Bianchi’s legacy of work lives on in his hometown.

The time is now to help
Mother struggles after husband’s death Dear W.C., My sister is having a very hard time right now. Her husband of 10 years passed away unexpectedly in a car accident a few months ago and left her destitute. His funeral on top of the many debts and bills he left her with is overwhelming. She is devastated from her loss. She has two children she is doing her best to care for and help through their grief too. Could you please call or visit my sister? Our family is just scraping by each month and in no position to offer any financial help. I do help watch her children and have shared as many meals as I can afford. I have heard you talk about tough times and living in poverty. That is exactly what my sister is going through right now. Dear readers, I called the woman to set up a time to visit. She asked me who I was and when I answered her, she said, “Oh, you’re that man that helps people. I read about you in the newspaper.” I answered, “I heard from your sister that you are going through some difficult times. She wrote to me in your behalf. She would like to set up a time we can all sit down and talk about your situation. Would you be willing to do that?” She replied, “It would be wonderful if we could all talk. She is right. ‘Sprinkle a little magic’
BY
ANNE TRAUTNER STAFF WRITER
he sparkly dresses and elegant hairstyles were just what 9-year-old Camyle Davis expected when she signed up to compete in a beauty pageant on March 7. But she was intrigued watching the adult contestants as they participated in the interview portion of the Mrs. Wisconsin Pageant. “I was hearing all the ladies talk about their community service, and I was kind of confused about it,” Camyle said. So Camyle’s mother, Courtney Davis, explained that being beautiful is more than wearing a pretty dress and fancy makeup. Real beauty is also about helping others, she said. Camyle decided she wanted to do something to help those in need. So, with her mom’s help, Camyle started doing what she can. She is sewing, baking and collecting whatever she can to help area organizations, and is inspiring others along the way.
Getting started Camyle, who is in third
grade, performed random acts of kindness with her homeschooling group for Christmas. But she had never participated in any other formal community service project. To find out what was available, Camyle’s mother contacted local organizations, but kept getting stonewalled because Camyle was too young to participate in ongoing programs. “A lot of organizations, for liability, said that she has to be 14,” Courtney Davis said. So Camyle began doing what she could. She decided she wanted to help Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the Ronald McDonald House and Lakeland Animal Shelter in Elkhorn. So far, she has made 12 dog and cat beds for Lakeland Animal Shelter, as well as countless treats for animals there. She has collected cat food and collars, and plans to make toys for the sheltered animals. She is donating books and collecting pop tops (soda tabs) to support the Ronald McDonald House, and plans to make burp cloths and baby blankets for newborns there. With her mother’s help, Camyle made 40 headbands

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2015 • 11 and 32 superhero capes for patients at Children’s Hospital. The Davis’ modest home in Burlington, where Camyle lives with her parents, five brothers and three sisters, is filling up with all of Camyle’s projects. “Our bedroom is full of pop tops, wherever you look, really,” Courtney Davis said.
Encouraging others With a motto of “sprinkle a little magic,” Camyle is hoping to encourage others to help others. “That is what I would like: more people helping,” Camyle said. Some already have joined Camyle’s cause. People have donated ribbon, cat food, collars and pop tops. “One gentleman texted my mom and said, ‘I have a few pop tops for you,’” Camyle said. The man gave Camyle about 37 pounds of pop tops that he had been collecting for the Ronald McDonald House because his 4-year-old daughter was in the hospital waiting for a heart transplant, Courtney Davis said. To publicize her efforts, Courtney Davis started a Facebook page for Camyle and entitled it, “Where-MagicHappens.” In less than a month, the page drew 286 followers from all over the world, including Russia and South Africa. “It has been very exciting,” Courtney Davis said. “Our goal is to get more kids involved, until they reach the age of 14
when they can be more in the organization.” At home, Camyle is setting an example for her eight siblings, who range in age from 4 months to 13 years. Some of the other families who are part of the Davis’ homeschooling group may join in the adventure in May, Courtney Davis said. “I’m actually kind of wondering to see if the kids at Children’s Hospital would help, when they are not sick,” Camyle said. “I think they can maybe kind of help me along.”
Future
Camyle did not win the beauty pageant in March, but Courtney Davis is grateful for the experience. “She took more out of it than I anticipated her to, honestly,” Courtney Davis said. “I think it helped with her confidence a little bit because you are going on stage in front of seven judges, and there are a lot of people in the audience. It was very cool.” Camyle is excited to compete in her next pageant, which will be held in Wisconsin Dells in August. She is looking forward to getting dressed up, walking across the stage and twirling for the judges. She doesn’t know how long she will compete in beauty pageants. However, she does know how long she will work to help others. “I will keep doing it until I die,” Camyle said.

Life’s truths – part 2 Here we are, back again to gain a little insight about the truths in life we occasionally ignore, sometimes acknowledge and often stumble upon when we least expect it. Don’t you love it when truth smacks you in the face? We’ve all been there. Like the time I realized: We all live in weird families. Planning a vacation can be nearly as fun as going on one. Moms and dads do most things for a reason. Kids just don’t know which reason when. You can never have too many double A batteries. The same can be said about TV remotes, socks, underwear and friends – not necessarily in that order. Sometimes worrying about the consequences is worse than the consequences. Happiness is a choice. Lefties are forced to live in a righty world. All you have is right now. When it’s gone, you’ll never get it back. With all the dust bunnies that settle on surfaces worldwide, you’d think the earth would be getting larger. If you’re going to take video with your smartphone, turn it on its side for landscape mode vs. portrait. Wide screen. Voila! A smile is free. So is a compliment. The probability of the toast falling peanut butter side up increases based on number of minutes you overslept multiplied by

whether you have an early morning meeting scheduled that day. When you get a scab in your ear, you’ll never know how it got there. Same goes for most bruises anywhere on the body. Sunshine really can boost your mood. Especially if your name is Whiskers. A person’s definition of “old” is typically about 10 years beyond their current age. Kids and pets make your life messy, but it is a good messy. Never underestimate anyone. If you have the good fortune to be in attendance at a boys’ middle school choir concert, be prepared to listen to a song about pirates. Cold water from the hose outside on a summer day tastes better than water out of the kitchen tap. Nobody likes picking up dog poop, but someone’s got to do it. Moms aren’t born knowing exactly how to locate pencils, safety pins and hairbrushes in a minute’s notice when you need them most. These highly efficient skills are honed throughout time, usually during nights spent awake worrying.
