Kenosha statues honor Lincoln, Civil War soldiers Events of 150 years ago recalled locally
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
This month marks the 150th anniversary of two events that changed the direction of our nation. The first event was the ending of the Civil War on April 9, 1865, a very positive event for the country and the other the assassination of President
Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, which threw our nation back into a difficult time. Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president in 1861, a tumultuous time in the nation’s history. Lincoln was the first Republican president to be elected. At the time of Lincoln’s election the north and the south were engaged in disagreements about slavery. The northern states, which were largely industrial, saw no need to continue to allow slavery, while the southern states, which had allowed slavery for many years, believed that slavery was necessary for the continued prosperity of the south and their cotton and tobacco crops. Following the election of Lincoln in November of 1860, the South Carolina legislature voted to secede from the Union. This was followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas joining in the secession. By February of 1961 delegates from some of the seceding states met in Montgomery, Ala., to form the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as President.
At left: This statue of Abraham Lincoln has stood in Kenosha’s Library Park since 1909 when it was donated by Kenosha businessman Orla Miner Calkins to the City of Kenosha in honor of the 100 anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Above: This 60-foottall monolith in Kenosha’s Library Park is composed of granite and capped with a statue of the Winged Victory. It was designed by Daniel Burnham to honor the men who fought in the Civil War. SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Hi-Liter
As the Confederate States began to attack Fort Sumter, President Lincoln declared a state of insurrection and called for 75,000 volunteers to serve for three months, which Lincoln believed would be ample time to quell the insurrection. This was not to be. Armies from North and South engaged in battles with both sides losing many of their young men. Wisconsin not only provided men to fight for the nation but also provided much food grown on the state’s farms to feed the troops. April and May of 1862 found Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina also seceding. In January of 1863, Lincoln proclaimed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in states that seceded from the union. It was not until 1865 that the Congress passed the 13th Amendment that officially disallowed slavery in all states. Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 with Andrew Johnson as his running mate. As he began his second term, the Civil War at last came to an end with the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. But peace was not to prevail. John Wilkes Booth a disgruntled actor working with other Confederacy sympathizers, shot President Lin-

Farm fame
STAFF WRITER
Philip Diedrich knows the names of all 130 cows on his farm situated on Richmond Road in Twin Lakes, Wis. “We are real personal with our animals,” Diedrich said. “They are kind of like family.” The Diedrich family does what it can to keep the cows happy. All 325 acres are farmed in order to provide high-quality food for the cattle. “Our cows get fed a better diet than what we eat as humans. Everything is computerized balanced. We just take really good care of them, they are comfortable,” Diedrich said. Because of the exceptional care the family farm provides for its cattle, the Diedrich family farm was featured on the nationally televised show “This Week in Agribusiness” on the
RFD television channel last weekend. The show was spotlighting Oberweis Dairy, and wanted to go to a farm to show where the milk comes from. Oberweis officials recommended the Diedrich farm because it is a nice, clean farm. “They wanted a farm to go to, to show how the milk goes from the cow to a glass bottle,” Diedrich said. The film crew came out to the farm about four weeks ago and shot some video and interviewed Diedrich, asking questions about what makes his farm’s milk a higher quality product than that of other farms, in order to sell to Oberweis. Diedrich explained to television reporters that happy cows produce high-quality milk. The Diedrich family was excited for the TV show to come
out, even though it would be about a month before the show would air. But on Saturday, April 4, Philip’s brother was listening to a farm show on Chicago’s WGN Radio at about 5 a.m., and heard Philip’s voice on the radio. The radio station was airing some of the interviews from the TV program. WGN Radio also posted pictures of the farm on its website. The Diedrich family farm sells its milk only to Oberweis. Oberweis has been delivering milk to homes since 1927. The company prides itself on selling high-quality milk, ice cream and dairy products. “They really focus on the quality of the milk, like they are real fussy about who they choose for farms, so you have
to meet their criteria. It’s just a lot of little things that help produce our quality product,” Diedrich said. In order to sell to Oberweis, farms must pass certain quality tests, such as bacteria level tests, Diedrich said. “We are always super low on the bacteria counts,” Diedrich said. “It’s also a matter of taking good care of the cows, feeding the cows well, and giving them extra vitamins and minerals to help them produce a higher quality product.” Those things usually earn the family the highest premiums that Oberweis pays out for the milk, he said. There are several other

Philip’s wife, Kimberly, their three children, 19-yearold Abby, 16-year-old Shannon and 13-year old Kyle, also work on the farm. “We have the fourth generation coming up, hopefully, if they take over the farm some day,” Philip Diedrich said. Taking care of the cows takes a lot of time, said Philip Diedrich, who works 14 to 15 hours a day. “But I enjoy it,” he said. “I enjoy getting up in the morning and going to work. If you enjoy what you do, it’s not work.”

Diedrich’s daughters, Abby and Shannon Diedrich, have seen people buying their farm’s products while working at Richter’s Marketplace in Twin Lakes. “They think it is neat when they check people out who are buying Oberweis milk and ice cream,” Philip Diedrich said. The Diedrich farm was started about 65 years ago, when Philip Diedrich’s grandfather, Edward, bought the farm. Summer movie slate set for Twin Lakes
Making music together
Choir students from Westosha Central High School and Bristol, Brighton, Paris and Salem grade schools recently held their “ChoralFest” concert at Central High School. The event brings together the choirs from the schools for an evening of music, with more than 200 students participating.
The village announced its summer movie lineup earlier this week, the fifth year of the “movies in the park” event at the Lance Park Amphitheater. The schedule for the movie showings, which begin at dusk in the park: • May 22, “Despicable Me 2” • June 5, “Maleficent” • June 19, “Heaven Is for Real” • July 17, “Big Hero 6” • July 31, “The Lego Movie”
SUBMITTED PHOTO Hi-Liter
• Aug. 14, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” • Aug. 28, “Planes – Fire and Rescue.” The movies are free to those who attend, thanks to sponsorship of the event. The title sponsor for the fifth year is Baxter and Woodman. Volunteers are needed to help with set up/take down. Interested volunteers should call Village Hall (262) 877-2858 and ask for Frederick.

Power goes out, relationship is on By
JILL PERTLER Columnist
baby, is really sick. On these days, I like to spend time with them, if possible. I’ve dubbed it empathy illness. Whenever someone in the house is sick, I lie low and keep him or her company, sometimes for just a small part of the day. Even if we don’t talk. It’s time together, and that is something. Today, though, I am busy. My tasks more than
fill my plate and there isn’t anything I can put off until tomorrow. So I sit at the computer and type. He is in the next room watching a movie. Resting. No complaints. The couch next to him is empty. I make him lunch and serve it on the tray we use when we are sick. Eating on the couch is reserved for those times when coming to the kitchen table isn’t practical – for those times when we are really sick, not just in need of a sick day. I refill his juice cup. Put ice in to make it nice and cold – so it soothes his sore throat. And I keep working. I am having success and
making headway on my tasks. It is looking as though I may get everything done by the end of the day. And, in a literal flash, the power goes out. Completely. We are without Internet, TV – even a hard line. I can’t run the dishwasher or throw in a load of laundry. My work on the computer isn’t lost but is inaccessible without power. I don’t even have a printed draft I can sit and review. I’m a little irritated at the interruption. My son on the couch, for his own part, is concerned, but not with what concerns me. What’s happening, he wonders. The lights and TV turned off. It looks dark over at the neighbor’s

My youngest is sick and lying on the couch – because that is what you do on sick days. I didn’t question him this morning when he told me he wasn’t feeling well. I could tell it was the truth. Other days, I might request a list of symptoms and put a palm to his forehead, but not today. Moms know from one quick look about these things. Dear W.C., Could you please help a friend of mine? She is going through a very tough time. She was diagnosed with Lyme disease after many tests and several doctors. Her fatigue, joint pain and brain fog make it impossible for her to work. She has applied for disability but is waiting on a decision. Until then she and her two children do not have money for rent, utilities or food. I have helped as much as my limited income will allow. No one understands how serious her symptoms are. She was a waitress but can no longer handle the long hours on her feet. Her mother lives out of state but has offered to help her with the children while she goes through treatment. Neither of them have the money to move or even get her out of her lease. Could you please help my friend? She is not getting better and seems to be getting worse every day.

He wonders what we would do if the power went out indefinitely. Does our reliance make us vulnerable? How many batteries would it take to power up the TV? Thoughtful thoughts. We talk. And I realize this little break in my day, sitting with my youngest – who happens to be home sick – is exactly what my busy schedule needed. Just what we needed. Together. Because amidst the noise and chaos and technology that permeates our lives,

what we have – when it comes down to it – is each other. And, although we aren’t cognizant of this on an every-moment or even everyday basis, it’s nice to know my young, pluggedin, social-media-savvy, appladen son can understand the concept when needed. And it is even nicer that in quiet times he can talk to his mom. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Her car is not reliable enough to make the trip here and back. I don’t know how I would get this apartment packed and on a truck when I can barely walk to my door.” The friend said, “I will help you pack up your belongings. Don’t worry we will find a way.” I asked about her lease for her apartment. It did not expire for another four months. I told her I would talk to her landlord if she would like to sublet the apartment and move to her mother’s. I could see the apartment was well cared for. The mother had done some painting and decorating when she had been healthy. Her rent was very reasonable and I knew of a family that desperately needed an apartment in the area. The woman was very happy to hear this but then asked, “But how will I get all this stuff moved?”
(Continued from page 9)
I then told her about our group of volunteers that would love to help her with this task. She looked skeptical. “You mean to tell me there are people that would volunteer to pack my apartment?” she asked. I told her there were. I asked to speak with her mother as I wanted to make sure this arrangement would work for her too. The woman gave me her phone number, and I called her right then. There was no use going any further with coordinating volunteers, subletting her apartment and getting a moving truck if the mother was not able or willing to have her move in. The mother asked twice who I was and when I explained she said, “I didn’t know there was a charity like yours that could help.” I gave her information about all we do and then
approached the subject of her daughter moving in. The mother said, “I have been doing nothing but worrying about my daughter and grandchildren and thinking about getting them here to care for. I am retired and have the time to take care of her. What I don’t have is the money to get her here. My car is very old and will not make the trip. I still live in the house she grew up in and there is plenty of room for her and the children. I have even gotten all the information on transferring the children into the schools here.” I could see she was definitely on board with us getting the daughter and grandchildren moved in. I said, “How would you feel if we got everything set up to move your daughter next week? Would you be ready for them?” I heard her voice catch as she said, “If you could do that for them I could
be ready tomorrow.” After speaking to the landlord, bringing her rent up to date, paying her overdue utilities and getting the sublet arranged, the volunteers stepped in. The friend had almost everything packed by the time they arrived. In that time the friend also did all the grocery shopping and cooking, delivering hot meals every day and even helping get the children to the school bus in the morning. The woman did not have to do anything other than rest up for her move. The woman’s mother took care of school transfers and even finding new medical care. The Time Is Now to Help and all of you together made this possible. Before we knew it, moving day was here. I arrived to

• Time is now find a small trailer loaded with the few belongings worth moving. When the mother had heard the people subletting her apartment were presently homeless and living in a motel, she had generously given some of her furniture and household necessities to them. She said, “I am not the only person sick and struggling right now. There are many people you could be helping other than me and my children. I am so grateful for everything you have done to help us. I don’t know how we would have survived if you did not come to our aid. The least I can do is pay some of it forward.” I thanked her and helped her walk to the car. Her friend was following with her car and a volunteer had offered to drive the trailer to her mother’s. I gave the mother and the two children a hug goodbye. The mother, children, the
(Continued from page 10) volunteer, friend and I all joined hands and said a prayer for safe travels and health. One more hug and they were on their way. I heard from the woman’s mother several weeks later. The woman’s disability had finally been approved. This would help with the household expenses and food. They were doing much better with the mother’s help. The woman was seeing a different doctor with a new plan of treatment. The children were enrolled in their new school and had told their grandmother how much they loved it. The mother said, “Please tell everyone at The Time Is Now to Help how grateful I am for their help. We could never have done this without you. My daughter was so weak when she got here. I don’t know how she was even caring for the children on her own. Thank God you were there. I am so very grateful to
all of you…” I could hear she was crying. I have seen and heard many tears of gratitude from our fellow creations over the years. It still brings tears to my own eyes knowing how we have made such a positive change in people’s lives. It is a feeling I would like to share with every one of you. We truly are a group of caring and sharing individuals who come together to make The Time Is Now to Help. Thank you for your part in making our charity works a success. We are getting close to matching the Barnabas $55,000 matching grant. Thank you for your generous support. Let us continue together to make this matching grant a success for those in desperate need. Please remember every dollar you donate at this time will be matched by the Barnabas
$55,000 matching grant, not only doubling your donation but also doubling your poverty assistance. The children, the handicapped, the elderly, those that cannot fend for themselves, those living in desperate need will be crying happy tears of relief thanks to all of you and The Time Is Now to Help working together to provide poverty relief to those most in need in our communities. Thank you and God bless you. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: Together we make a big difference. Make checks payable to The Time Is Now to Help, P.O.
