Shining a light on the past Kenosha’s lighthouse is a beacon for local maritime history

Long before ships were guided through the waters by radar, captains piloted their ships from port to port with the help of beacons of light that shone along the lakeshore. Lighthouses could be found at every major port and some simply stood to prevent the ship from running aground in rocky shallow waters. The City of Kenosha had been a shipping port since the early 1800s when it was known as Southport. In the 1850s the port was used to import products into the area, mainly materials that were needed for the growth of the city. Building materials, especially lumber and coal, were the main products to be imported at that time. By 1900 wheat grown by the farmers in the area became a major export. In 1866 the federal government built the lighthouse that today stands on Simmons Island along Lighthouse Drive. It was not the first lighthouse to stand at this location. The Kenosha lighthouse was built in 1866. It was the third lighthouse built at this location. It was constructed of Milwaukee Cream City brick.

first replaced in 1858. The new 1866 lighthouse was 55 feet tall and was built of yellow Milwaukee Cream City bricks in a conical shape. Since it stood at the top of a hill, the light that projected from the beacon at the top of the lighthouse was 74 feet above sea level. Maintaining the light often required the lighthouse keeper to climb the 72-step, circular stairway to the top. According to Joe Caliendo, volunteer guide, there was a keeper’s room at the top and a widow’s walk can still be seen at the top of the lighthouse. Fresnel lens The light was projected from a fourth order Fresnel lens, which was fueled by kerosene. This produced a fixed white light, which was varied by flashes. The light was visible for 12.5 miles into the lake. A fog signal was added in1900. In 1867 the keeper’s house was officially finished, which provided a place to live for the keeper of the lighthouse and his family. The first lighthouse keeper of the1866 lighthouse was Joseph Merrill, a Civil War veteran who was appointed as the Head Keeper on December 26, 1865, a position that he retained until his death on December 7, 1871. Merrill made his home in the new light keeper’s cottage with his wife, Lorinda, and daughter Emma. Emma was listed as a schoolteacher in the census and in addition was commissioned as an assistant light keeper to her father. With the death of Joseph Merrill, Lorinda Merrill, Joseph’s widow, was appointed light keeper, a po-

sition she served from December 1871 until June 1872. Some sources list Lorinda as the first woman lighthouse keeper in Wisconsin. Others state that she was one of few women keepers along the Lake Michigan shore. A second Civil War veteran, Louis Napoleon De Diemar, replaced Lorinda Merrill as the head lighthouse keeper. For De Diemar, the job was a challenging task as he had lost one hand in battle during the Civil War. De Diemar served in the First Volunteer Infantry of Wisconsin but was released after only

14 months because of his injury. He worked as a bridge tender and as a farmer until his appointment as Head Lighthouse Keeper. His wife, Mary, served as assistant light keeper. De Diemar was the longest serving keeper, serving at 35 years. After his retirement, he moved to South Bend, Ind. De Diemar died in 1913 with Mary following in 1928. Both are buried in Green Ridge Cemetery.

Member resigns spot on Salem Grade School board CORRESPONDENT
The Salem Grade School Board got a surprise at the end of the May 19 regular School Board meeting when recently re-elected board member Jack Niccolai announced his resignation. The board had already elected officers. Dana Powers is president, Nick Pauloni is vice president, Lisa Heinz retains her position as treasurer and Shane Gerber is clerk. Niccolai was elected deputy clerk at the beginning of the meeting. He waited until the committee assignment portion later in the meeting to announce his resignation and read his letter. “I want to thank the taxpayers for their vote of confidence and the school board members,” Niccolai wrote. “However, due to circum-
stances beyond my control, I am forced to re-evaluate my place on this board. I realize that I cannot devote the time and energy this seat requires. “I am therefore resigning from my board position after this meeting is adjourned. I am asking that my privacy be respected in this matter,” he added in the letter. “I am confident that this board will continue to move our school in the right direction. I recommend Parisa Watson to fill my chair. She has proven a valuable member of this board in the short time she served.” Watson ran for the seat as a registered write-in, while Robert Spencer was the other candidate. Spencer received 369 votes, or 26 percent. The write-in received 128 votes, or 9 percent. Watson wasn’t the only write-in, so there
is no way to determine how many votes were hers. In a later telephone interview, Powers said the board has made no determination on how to fill the seat left vacant by Niccolai’s resignation. The board could chose to leave the seat vacant, appoint either Watson or Spencer, or open it up to all district residents. Powers said the School Board would hold a special meeting sometime this week. Niccolai was on the board for one term and had just been re-elected for a second term. Last year he served as board president. Powers said that committee assignments would be done at a later date, but the entire board has been meeting as the finance committee. “We want to make sure our budget is in order before summer,” Powers said.
Salem eyes 2015 road improvements That would create a future revenue stream to pay back that $4.9 million. The 2013 borrowing of $3 million was used to improve 9-10 miles of road, with half done in 2013 and the other half in 2014. Salem Town Supervisor Mike Culat first suggested the idea, stating that this $3 million would be used to jump-start a major project of fixing Salem roads. Then the town would work to increase the amount
budgeted annually for road repair. The 2013 minutes for the annual meeting contain the following information: in 2009, the town budgeted $275,000; in 2010, $400,000; 2011, $130,000; 2012, $173,000 and 2013, $200,000. The town’s stated goal at the 2013 meeting was to budget $500,000 a year to rebuild and maintain the town roads.

Decommissioned in 1906 The beacon continued to light the way for ships until 1906 when it was decommissioned. The lantern room at the top of the lighthouse was replaced by a 25-foot tripod, which was to serve as a place to display flags warning of storms. The year 1899 brought changes in the harbor, as engineers widened the channel and increased the depth to 21 feet. They added a breakwater, which was placed on an angle to help deter the buildup of sand at the harbor’s entrance. A light was added to the south end of the breakwater to help guide ships into the harbor. In 1906 a cast iron lighthouse, 50 feet tall was constructed at the end of the pier. This lighthouse Discover the
became known as the Pierhead Lighthouse. In 1990 the 1866 lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In a joint effort, the City of Kenosha and the Kenosha Historical Society renovated the keeper’s house, which is open for visitors. The house is filled with historical displays of the history of the harbor and the lighthouse. A bedroom and kitchen as they would have looked around 1900 takes visitors back to that time. Highway 158 resurfacing begins GRADUATION CELEBRATION! SALE DATES: Wed., June 3rd - Tues., June 9th, 2015
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation was scheduled to begin a three-mile resurfacing project Monday on Highway 158, from Highway 31 to Highway 32, in the City of Kenosha. The contractor, Stark Asphalt, plans on completing the $2.6 million project this fall. The entire project is paid for by state funds. Built in 1960, with its last rehabilitation in 1994, the Highway 158 roadway is deteriorated and is in need of repair, according to DOT officials. The reconstruction project is designed to prevent the pavement condition from deteriorating to unsafe levels prior to a future reconstruction or larger resurfacing project. Montgomery Highlands, Shorewood Terrance and the Hi Woods subdivision are all slated for road improvements in 2015. The funding is part of the $2.445 million general obligation bond the Town of Salem Board recently approved. The estimated cost for those three areas is nearly $1.4 million. Other areas slated for improvement are the Camp Lake boat launch, the Camp Lake Park trail and the Camp Lake Park parking lot. The estimated cost for these three is just over $350,000. In addition, nearly $300,000 will be spent on highway trucks, nearly $300,000 on a fire department ambulance and $58,000 on a fire cascade system (used to fill air tanks for firefighters) and $150,000 for the Salem Oaks Park Pavilion, for a total of nearly $500,000. The town board has approved a fraction of the estimated total borrowing for 2015, which is estimated at more than $9.6 million. Additional items under consideration include $10,000 for heating the park pavilion, $25,000 for a rec/plex community center study, $10,000 for a splash park and $4.9 million for business park development. The town is creating a tax incremental fund district (TIF) for the business park.

Slices of Life My husband and I have been wrestling with an issue that affects most happy couples at one time or another. It’s the between-the-sheets secret that causes irritation, frustration and sleep deprivation. You’ve probably experienced it firsthand in your own marriage. It happens to the best of us. Snoring. It’s like burping or farting: unappealing and unattractive, yet

The National Sleep Foundation estimates snoring affects 90 million American adults; that’s more than one in three. The conundrum, of course, is identifying the one from the three. No one wants to admit to snoring – at least not at my house. One study found that 59 percent of people report that

occasionally unavoidable for those of the human persuasion. It’s not a standard topic of normal dinner conversation, but lately my husband and I have grappled with the “S”

Like many things in life, my husband and I take different approaches to loud and unseemly behavior in our bedroom. If he were to snore (I’m not intimating he does) I would roll over and ignore the noise while realizing there are many things

much worse than lying in bed, comfy and cozy, next to your snoring spouse. To be fair, I don’t mind resting somewhere between awake and sleep, pondering whatever topic might come to mind in the middle of the night. And most nights I fall into slumber easily and stay there, even amid snorts and other forms of noisy breathing (were it to occur, ever, which it probably hasn’t, ever). My husband abhors pondering. Once jarred from dreamland, he may toss and turn and turn and toss, refusing the dozing state as his body refuses to surrender to sleep. If I happened to snore one night (again, we are being
completely hypothetical here) he might get up from bed and move to another room to escape the thunder. To him, that would be the logical alternative. He isn’t the only one. All this snoring under the covers is causing mass exodus from the bedroom. Another study by the NSF found that 23 percent of couples sleep apart – many (46 percent) because of snoring.
