History written in stone Green Ridge cemetery is a who’s who of Kenosha’s past By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Throughout the state there are hundreds of cemeteries large and small where those who have come before us have been interred. Some of these cemeteries are large city cemeteries, while others are small. Some are so small that they are tucked into a corner of a farmer’s field, where members of only one specific family are buried. A visit to a cemetery is a visit to the history of the area. Just by reading the headstones, it is possible to learn much of the history of the area. In the 19th century and early 20th century people had a much shorter life expectancy than those of us who are alive today. Children especially were vulnerable to illness that today is preventable by vaccine. Young women often died during childbirth. Times of war are easily seen by the number of young men who died in a specific time period. Green Ridge Cemetery in Kenosha is one of those burial places that is a history of the families that settled Kenosha and helped it develop into a thriving city. Green Ridge is recognized as the oldest cemetery in Kenosha County. In 1838 shortly before her death, Catherine Durkee, first wife of Sen. Charles Durkee expressed to her husband a desire to be buried on the north end of his property. This property was in the city then known as Southport but today after a change of name, is Kenosha. Durkee not only allowed Catherine to be buried in this location, but donated several acres to the city to be used as a cemetery. Catherine’s burial was not the first at this location. According to cemetery records burials dating back to 1836 and possibly even earlier occurred on this land. Over the years, the cemetery became the place for prominent Kenosha families to purchase large plots to ensure their families would be accommodated in the same area. Large mon-

uments marked the family plots. The Durkee family monument stands on a slight hill and can be seen from the entrance. In 1906, a nine-member board was elected to oversee the cemetery. The board became known as the Kenosha Cemetery Association. The members became the custodians of Green Ridge Cemetery. Over the years, the board has not only maintained the cemetery but has sponsored cemetery walks over the last few years, bringing the history of the families buried here to life. Among the interesting persons buried at Green Ridge is Mary D. Bradford, who made her mark on the city when she became the first woman to serve as superintendent of schools. Her memorable contributions include adding kindergarten and introducing manual and household arts classes to the curriculum. Summer programs were added during her term of service. Also in the education field was Michael Frank, a territorial legislator who on Feb. 24, 1845, secured the enactment of legislation that assured free public education in Southport. This would be the first free school outside of New England. The school opened to students on June 18, 1845. Frank was not finished with his work. He continued to encourage the development of free schools in Wisconsin, according to the Kenosha Historical Society. Others buried include, businessmen Charles Willis, and Henry Cooper of the Jockey Company, Thomas Jeffries, inventor of the steering wheel for automobiles, and Zalmon Simmons of Simmons Mattress, to name a few. A conductor on the Underground Railroad, Reuben Deming, who was a Methodist Minister, is also buried here. The cemetery has a large number of veterans interred, many of them from the Civil War. Most of their graves can be visited along Veterans

Above: This stone building located on the northeast corner of Green Ridge Cemetery holds the records of the burials and is the working office of the cemetery. Left: The Durkee monument, marking the Sen. Charles Durkee’s family burial plot, stands on the north side of the cemetery on a slight hill. SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Hi-Liter

Imperfect parenting of imperfect kids This message goes out to the young mom with three boys who recently apologized about not being able to stifle her energetic brood – and to the parents of all kids who have ever acted out in public, but especially those with boys who are not always perfect. (Those of you with perfect kids need read no further. Wink.) The rest of us know who we are. We’re the ones in checkout line at the supermarket with a kid wailing so loudly the store manager comes over and offers to bag our groceries. We’ve had to

leave a store – and a halffull cart – more than once because the behaviors of our children made further shopping impossible. We do not always look forward to parent teacher conferences. We are those parents. We find ourselves sighing and apologizing a lot – sometimes even when there’s nothing to apologize

for. It becomes second nature and comes with the territory – uncharted territory for most of us. Because who ever thinks they will be a parent to imperfect kids? Certainly not me. But it happens. Thank goodness. It’s probably politically incorrect to differentiate boys from girls. Each child comes with his or her unique set of gifts and challenges. This is true. But I am here, deep in the trenches, telling you that mothers of boys (as in plural) belong to an elite club. It’s a club filled

Paddock Lake road projects begin in July By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Coming to a street near you, in Paddock Lake: summer roadwork on 235th Avenue from Highway K to 68th Street and 242nd Avenue from Highway 50 to 77th Street. At a May 12 Committee of the Whole meeting, Paddock Lake Village Administrator Tim Popanda presented the draft brochures that the village will send out to affected residents before work begins. The start date is right after July 4 and the work is estimated for completion by the end of August. On both streets, the work will consist of the removal and replacement of bituminous pavement; the reconstruction road base and shoulder; and various

drainage improvements. The village will notify area residents of any locations changes for school bus stops and temporary mailbox locations and limited access to driveways. Work will be done Monday though Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to village ordinance. Any variations from this would need prior approval and residents would be notified. Some property owners may not have access to their driveways during the day, but will have access by the end of the day. Information about changes will be on the village website, www.paddocklake.net. During construction the contractor will salvage all mailboxes that must be moved. The contractor may install new

cluster mailboxes at post office approved locations. Village officials said that sanitary sewer service will not be interrupted during construction and have also said this project does not involve the installation of municipal water on 242nd Avenue. Popanda explained there is no plan to service 242nd Avenue with municipal water now or at any time in the foreseeable future. Sections of maintained lawn that are disturbed during construction will be restored with topsoil and seed at the end of the project. Driveways that are disturbed will be replaced as close as possible to its original location and configuration. The village will replace the ends of all driveways that will be affected by the work.

The status of the 15 calves moved to Beth’s farm will be determined following the meeting with the district attorney. Beth said the smaller calves of the 15 are showing improvement. Deputies were continuing daily inspections at the farms.

symptoms of illness, some may become ill, usually three to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. In some individuals, particularly the elderly, the virus can cause muscle weakness, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma or death. The Health Department conducts a multi-faceted mosquito surveillance program in Lake County. Beginning in late spring and continuing into the autumn, a series of traps are set around the county, including within the Lake County forest preserves. At each site, a pool or batch of mosquitoes is tested weekly for West Nile virus. Areas of stagnant water are also investigated throughout the season for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the Culex mosquito, which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois. Finally, the locations of dead birds are monitored to assist in the assessment of potential West Nile virus activity. The Health Department works closely with municipalities, townships, and the Lake County Forest Preserve District in monitoring the mosquitoes that may pose a public health threat. The Lake County, Ill., Health Department and Community Health Center is encouraging residents to be vigilant about eliminating sources for mosquitoes to breed as well as using protection to avoid contracting West Nile virus. Most people become infected with West Nile virus by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds and then spread the virus to humans and other animals. In 2014, two human cases of West Nile virus were reported in Lake County. In addition, 31 pools or batches of mosquitoes and one bird tested positive for the virus. “The two human cases reported last year remind us that it is still important for residents to protect themselves against West Nile virus,” said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s executive director. “We can do this by protecting ourselves against mosquito bites and ensuring that the environment around us is not conducive to mosquito breeding.” Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water holding containers; poke holes in tires used as bumpers on docks • Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10, 2015 • 10

Couple struggles after son’s death Dear W.C., My husband and I lost our 43-year-old son, our only child, nearly two years ago in a car accident. He was hit by a drunken driver. He was in the hospital for two weeks before he died. He was going through a divorce before he died. At the time of his death, he was not legally divorced yet so she got everything when he died. Our son lived with us at the time of his accident. He paid rent, part of the utilities and helped us around the house. He was driving our car in the accident. We only carried liability insurance for our car that was totaled, so we lost our vehicle as well. Our son not only helped us around the house, he also helped us make ends meet. Without his help or a reliable car, we are really struggling. We already lost our home to foreclosure and are now awaiting eviction. We have nowhere to go without a security deposit, first month’s rent and a reliable car to put our things in. My husband has had several strokes and is unable to work. I have rheumatoid arthritis and several other medical problems that have really flared up since the death of our son, our foreclosure and pending eviction. We have not been able to get to the doctor as much as we are supposed to without a car. We just can’t seem to get past this painful time both mentally and financially. I hear my husband cry sometimes when he knows I’m in the other room. Sometimes we just look at each other and begin to cry together. We can’t believe we made it to this age, this point in our lives, only to spend it alone and homeless.

They did not realize we had done this until they went to bed the first night in their new apartment. I received a voicemail that night filled with happy tears and gratitude for everything we did for them. I could hear them both shouting into the phone, “Sal where did this new bed come from? You are so thoughtful. We never told you how bad our backs felt when we got up every morning. You were already doing so much for us, we couldn’t ask for a mattress too. Everyone at The Time Is Now to Help truly are angels sent from above.” When I stopped by a few days later to see how they were getting by, I noticed how much better both the husband and wife were doing. No longer did I see the stressed, worried faces. Gone were the tears and slumped shoulders. The wife was moving freely around her new space, no longer burdened with piles of unnecessary belongings. She showed me the shelf in their living room dedicated to their son. She had added a few photographs and one of his trophies stood proudly next to them. I told her how nice everything looked and especially how good she and her husband looked. The wife gave me a hug and said, “We just can’t thank you, The Time is Now to Help and your wonderful volunteers and supporters enough. We felt like we died along with our son and now we feel like living again. That is because of all of you reaching out to us and changing our lives. Even our health has improved. I can’t even explain how much this has changed our lives.” I hugged her in return telling her how glad we were that we could be there to help. embarrassed. Because, gosh darn it, if you were a better – stricter, more on the ball – parent they wouldn’t do these things! You are trying your best and still they spray paint the trees in the backyard. They mix Mentos and Coke. They take apples from the neighbor’s tree without asking or throw rocks at each other – just because they can. Those things. On a good day, they lose the chain from their bicycle or take the book I’m reading to cover the tadpole bowl. A bad day often involves broken glass. Hopefully not the tadpole glass. When I was a rookie parent every minor infraction seemed intense. Each boyish blunder hung heavy around my neck like a noose. Hot Wheels cars clogging the toilet? Picking the neighbor’s peonies? Cringe worthy. But you know how the saying goes: When life hands you a noose, make it into a necklace. It took me years, but I stopped cringing over the small stuff. Then I realized almost all of it is small stuff. That is cause for celebration – for imperfect parents with imperfect kids

everywhere. Rejoice! We can wear our “nooselaces” with a semi-sense of pride and learn to laugh at the bulk of it. What else can we do? They are kids (or boys as the case may be) and they do dumb things – like bring a tree frog home in their pants pocket. Or have a contest to see who can eat the most pizza before throwing up. Or make yellow snow. They make mistakes. So do we. All of us. Perfect or not. When we stick together and love one another despite our imperfections, it changes our definition of the word and makes the term unnecessary, not unattainable. When they mess up and break something again (and they will) often the best we can do is laugh and apologize – not necessarily in that order. And we can do so understanding that things are things and kids are kids. The difference being one can be replaced; the other cannot. That’s one big fish Village OKs iconic statues for Twin Lakes restaurant STAFF WRITER

The Twin Lakes Village Board approved a request to allow a large fisherman and fish statue to be mounted on top of Mad Dan’s Restaurant during a special board meeting June 1. The 14-foot-long fish and the 12-foot-tall fisherman fiberglass duo are a wellknown icon to many people familiar with the former Fisherman’s Dude Ranch in Des Plaines, Ill, which opened in 1956 and closed down in 1997. Ken Perl, owner of Mad Dan’s 200 E. Main Street, said he used to fish there when he was younger. He said many people in the Twin Lakes area are familiar with the Fisherman’s Dude Ranch. “I think it will bring attraction to the town,” Perl said. He said he believes it will be very well accepted in the village, and he is not expecting any conflicts. SUBMITTED GRAPHIC Hi-Liter An exchange between This is a projected view of what the fiberglass fisherman and fish duo will look like two Village trustees during mounted outside Mad Dan’s Restaurant, 200 E. “We always welcome new customers into our village,” she added. The fisherman and the fish, weighing in at 350 pounds and 425 pounds, respectively, will be mounted on cemented steel pipes outside the restaurant to advertise its fish fry. “We’re famous for our fish fry, so I think it’s going to help promote that,” Perl said. He said the fisherman and fish are being touched up at the moment and should be mounted within a month. Mad Dan’s Restaurant has been in the area for about 31 years, relocating from just off the lake to the current Main Street location about eight years ago.

the special board meeting proves the size and nature of the statues certainly spark a conversation. “What kind of fish is that?” Trustee Tom Connolly asked. “It’s one big ugly fish is what it is,” Trustee Barbara Andres responded. Regardless of the various opinions on the statues, it is expected to attract attention and generate interest from potential visitors. “I definitely think it could serve as a new landmark for the village,” Village Administrator Jennifer Frederick said. The statues have a certain historical and iconic element that the community can appreciate, Frederick said.
