Jack Benny remains Waukegan’s claim to fame By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Jack Benny, one of America’s favorite entertainers in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, was well known as a musician, comedian, vaudevillian, movie actor and television star. Yet throughout his career spanning so many decades, Benny never forgot his roots and often returned to his hometown of Waukegan, Ill. Benjamin Kubelsky, who would eventually be known as Jack Benny, made his entrance into the world at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, on Valentine’s Day 1894. His parents, Meyer and Emma Kubelsky, welcomed their first born, returning to their home in Waukegan. Six years later, a sister joined the family. For his sixth birthday, Benny received a gift that would be a steppingstone into his future career. A half-size violin opened the world of music. His father encouraged him to become a musician, but he became far more than a musician in the world of

entertainment. He began to play in local bands and in the high school orchestra. While he succeeded in music, he was not the best student academically and dropped out of school. While playing in the pit of the Barrison Theater, a local theater, Benny met the Marx brothers who offered him a job touring with them for which he would be paid $7.50 a week plus room and board. His parents declined the offer for their son since he was still a minor. The Marx brothers and Benny remained friends for life. In 1912, Benjamin Kubelsky changed his name to Ben K. Benny and teamed up with a piano player, Cara Salisbury and played together for five years. With Salisbury’s retirement, Benny found a new pianist named Lyman Woods, and together they played everything from opera to ragtime. Benny interrupted his career in 1917 to return home to care for his ailing mother. Upon her death, life changed again. In 1917, World War I led many young men, including Benny, to join the military The Jack Benny Center for the Performing Arts, located appropriately at 39 Jack Benny Drive, Waukegan, Ill., provides instruction in the fine arts, including music, theater and dance. A small theater provides a place for performances.

as the United States plunged into war. Benny enlisted in the Navy and while at Great Lakes Naval Station was assigned to entertain the troops with his violin performances. At one performance when Benny was booed, fellow sailor and actor Pat O’Brien encouraged him to ad lib his way out of the performance. When he left the stage the audience was laughing. As Benny moved into more comedic routines, his violin became more of a prop. His name changed again, this time to Jack Benny, which he used for the rest of his life. Sadie Marks, who later adopted the stage name Mary Livingston, married Benny in 1927 at the Clayton Hotel in Waukegan. Marks, who had a comedic flair herself, began a partnership both in life and in comedy that was to last their lifetime. The year 1932 marked the beginning of radio’s popularity and Benny was quick to join in. After an appearance on the Ed Sullivan radio show, he began his own series of shows. His shows often were called by the name of their sponsors, the “Canada Dry Show” and the “Chevrolet Show” being two such programs. The shows were a blend of comedy, music and fictional episodes. Although, Benny was successful in radio, he didn’t limit himself to one theatrical scene. He starred in about 22 movies beginning in 1939 with the movie “Man About Town,” and was well known for the 1941 movie “Charley’s Aunt.” Around 1950 there was another new medium for the entertainment world. Television made its appearance into homes and new types of programming began. Benny’s variety radio show made its

transition to the small screen, and in the early fifties they were all small screens. His television career spanned the years from 1950 to 1965. In spite of his busy entertainment career, Benny did not forget Waukegan and Waukegan did not forget him. When the Jack Benny Middle School was dedicated in 1961, Benny was there. He made his last visit to Waukegan on April 24, 1974, to attend the inaugural concert of the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra. Benny raised $6 million for the symphony. In spite of Benny’s fictional character as a cheap individual and a poor musician, nothing could be further from the truth in his real life.
Benny died in 1974 at his Beverly Hills home due to pancreatic cancer. He was 80. Benny had a profound effect on the development of comedy and, particularly, on the development of the television comedy shows so popular in the early days of television. He was inducted into the radio and television halls of fame and received many professional honors. Benny is still honored by Waukegan with the Jack Benny Cultural Center, which encourages the arts and has a permanent Jack Benny display. The middle school named in his honor has a motto that reflects Benny’s stated age of 39 throughout his life, “the home of the 39ers.” In his hometown, Benny will remain forever 39.

We also provided gift cards for groceries and household necessities. The wife looked embarrassed by this and I asked her if she was OK. She tearfully answered me, “I too had shared some of my husband’s feelings about people that don’t work and took what I thought were handouts. I have worked my whole life as a housekeeper and was proud we could support ourselves. Now I too know how it feels to be in need and feel so out of control. My husband fell on the ice and his injuries have kept him from returning to work. He is still going to physical therapy and his doctors have not cleared him for work yet. I missed a lot of work caring for him when this first happened four months ago. Now we are having a hard time catching up on all our bills on top of the medical bills we are receiving. who, if they hadn’t been rocked out of bed by the explosions, were sure to be by our decibel-rich generator. I suggested we go back to bed. My husband was having nothing of my logic because he was operating under logic all his own. And he’d waited more than two years to do so. He spent the next 15 minutes untangling various extension cords, which were soon plugged into the beast in the garage and summarily snaked throughout the house and attached to various electronic devices. By 9:00 a.m. we had two TVs on and coffee brewing. He was beginning to speak my language. I have to admit, I woke up that morning a skeptic, but by noon I was a convert. My husband finally won me over to his generator inclinations. It only took him two-and-a-half years to accomplish the feat. Perhaps he is a patient man after all. Back in the fall of 2012, my husband developed a genuine need for a generator. He claimed his motivation was based out of love for our family – from a desire to keep us safe, warm and with readily available access to microwave popcorn and video games. Some may remember December 21, 2012, as the end date of the ancient Mayan calendar. Doomsday enthusiasts (now there’s an oxymoron) predicted an end to the world as we know it, while stocking up on freezedried meats, powdered milk and generators. Generators are powerful machines capable of powering up any number of electrical appliances during power outages or end-of-the-world zombie apocalypses. They are useful and loud and – dare I say – manly. My husband learned all about them and developed a whopping case of generator envy. I don’t think he really believed the world was about to end. He just wanted an excuse to buy a generator. He wouldn’t rest until we had one of our own. The bigger, the better. I wasn’t even aware generators existed for private

Owner’s death puts music store in a bind Fiancée seeks public’s help in raising funds
Above: Tricia Wolf stands outside Musician Makers, 911 Main St., Antioch, on Saturday. Wolf is engaged in an effort to keep the music store open and hopeful the community will help in that cause. Tricia Wolf of Musician Makers, 911 Main St., Antioch, is seeking the community’s support in keeping her store afloat. Wolf’s fiancée and the original owner of Musician Makers, Scott “Chester” Yeager, died suddenly from a heart attack in February at the age of 41. Wolf’s mission since then has been to rescue the business from possible closure due to debt and the less-than-friendly economic climate affecting many small businesses. “I hope to keep the store going both to keep Chester’s memory alive and to keep a music store in Antioch a reality,” Wolf said. “There has been a viable music store in the village for over 25 years. Even though we are a smaller operation, if our inventory doesn’t carry a specific item, we can order it for the customer.” Musician Makers is more than a retail store, however. It is also a training ground for aspiring musicians. As many as 300 students have been enrolled for the private lessons offered. Currently, almost 150 are in classes. “Our students are another reason I would hate for the store to close. It is inspiring to see them improving their talents week to week,” Wolf said. “I’m fearful that if we close, many of the students will simply give up on their lessons and developing their musical talents.” In an effort to stabilize the business, Wolf has initiated a fundraising campaign on the Crowdrise website. Those interesting in helping should visit crowdrise.com and search for “music store.” Additionally, a fundraiser is planned for Sunday, May 17, at Anastasia’s, 950 Hillside Dr., Antioch, with the restaurant donating space for the event. To learn more about Musician Makers and their fundraising efforts, visit their website at musicianmakers. com, email contact@musicianmakers.com, or call (847) 838-3635.
Silver Lake looks to sheriff for policing By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth made a very simple statement to residents of Silver Lake recently. “I am your sheriff,” he said. “I hold a constitutional office and I answer to the voters.” Beth reminded about 70 Silver Lake residents of that April 14 at a public hearing held at Riverview Grade School regarding policing services for the village. “You already pay taxes for our services,” Beth said, “and we show up when you need us.” Beth outlined several different options for Silver Lake to contract with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department for police services. One option is for 16.5 hours of coverage a day with a base cost of $275,079. A 20.5-hour per day option would cost $338,486. The Silver Lake police budget current stands at $340,000 – about $100,000 less than last year. Budget constraints within the village have forced a number of different financial cuts – including going to a part-time police chief – and this move could save Silver Lake a considerable amount of money. How much was the subject of some disagreement. An extra squad on Friday and Saturday nights could translate into an addition $20,000, and the estimated cost of the water patrol is $4,678 after Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reimbursement.
Using the current budget, some at the meeting felt the savings would be $65,000, while others felt it would be closer to $165,000. But beyond just the possible financial savings, there were a number of other issues for Beth to address with last week’s audience. In the last 12 months, KSD answered 425 calls in the village, while SLPD answered 1,197. “We already know your village,” Beth said, “and there are always deputies nearby.” One questioner wondered if “naughty” officers would be exiled to Silver Lake. Beth retorted that they fire “naughty” officers. “We hand-pick the officers for Bristol and Paddock Lake,” Beth said. “We do rotate them out after about a year.” One concern was that if the village does contract with KSD, dedicated patrol cars could be pulled to another location, leaving the village without protection. “There isn’t a municipality that doesn’t require extra aid,” Beth said. “If there is an incident at B and 50, we call on your officers to stay on the scene until we arrive. If there is a larger incident in Silver Lake, we show up.” Other expressed concerns included less coverage and water patrol. Silver Lake police officer Chris Schneider commented that the officers use out of date vests. Outgoing Board President Sue Gerber took
exception to that comment the following night at the regular board meeting, saying that the village reimburses officers for equipment purchases. It was pointed out by trustee Mike Decker that with the current budget, Silver Lake didn’t have enough money
to purchase enough ammunition to meet the state required twice annual shooting qualification. Beth said he has room for the Silver Lake officers, provided they pass the required tests and make it though probation.
What’s your bid?
“We work to make sure they pass probation,” Beth said. “We already have a lot of time into an officer at that point.” Any officer form SLFD that would be hired by the county would be at the bottom of the rooster as far as seniority, but
they would be compensated with pay and vacation for the years of service they have. Benefits to the officers, according to Beth, would be an immediate pay raise and the ability to learn other areas of the law enforcement field and to advance.
