driver is best for long drives and has a different weight distribution than the other types of discs. It isn’t just a Frisbee being thrown, but a special disc for disc golf. The game is played much as golf is played. There is a tee pad that the player stands on to throw the first disc towards the basket, which stands on a green. As the player throws the disc toward the green down the fairway he must be careful not to have it land in the rough. While in regular golf hitting the ball off the fairway leaves it in slightly denser grass, the rough in a disc game is often three to four feet high making it difficult to locate the disc. Scoring is similar to golf with lowest score winning but there are some complicated rules about scoring. There are three disc golf courses in the Kenosha area. They are all professionally designed courses, open year round, and free to use. Here are brief descriptions of the local courses:
• University of Wisconsin Parkside, 900 Wood Road, (Highway E and 30th Avenue). The professionally designed course consists of 18 challenging holes on the 700-acre campus. There are both professional and amateur tees depending on the challenge desired. There is a disc golf pro shop in the University Bookstore on campus. • Silver Lake Park, 27000 87th Street, (Highway F South of Highway 50) Silver Lake. This nine-hole course is in the 260-acre Silver Lake Park. It is a par-29 course with long, challenging fairways through a forest setting. By using various levels of play, it becomes a challenging course for all skill levels and ages. • Fox River Park, 9521 304th Avenue (Highway F and Highway W), Salem. The park is home to two disc golf courses. The nine-hole Red Fox course is family friendly and great for beginners and those with a lower skill level. The Silver Fox course is an 18hole, par-59 course that offers championship and intermediate level play.

Woman needs help caring for disabled mom, sister Dear W.C., I have never asked for help before in my life. I live with my disabled mother and sister. My sister was born with cerebral palsy and my Mom has had several back surgeries. I care for them both full-time. My husband left a month ago. He left us in debt and now out of food. He emptied the checking account. I also found out he had not paid our rent or utilities for the past two months. We are about to be evicted and our utilities are about to be disconnected. After my initial shock that he would do something like this, I became worried as he was the only person working outside the home and paying the bills. I do not get compensated for the round-the-clock care I provide for my family. We are really in a bad position until the assistance I applied for is hopefully approved. Can you please help my mother, sister and I? Dear readers, Since this sounded like an emergency situation, I moved this letter of request to the top of the pile. After a quick check in our records to see if any assistance was ever given previously, we found the letter writer to be honest in stating they had never requested our assistance before. While this does not disqualify a person from receiving further assistance, it does help us to evaluate the situation. I looked up the address to see what kind of neighborhood I would be

entering and I was out the door. During the drive to the apartment listed on the letter, I called a few volunteers to have them on standby for food and any other necessities I saw they needed immediately. They were ready and willing to help. By the time I arrived at the women’s apartment I had myself ready for whatever I would find inside. I said a brief prayer and made my way to the door. I have had many people comment
on how difficult it must be to knock on a complete stranger’s door and ask to look into their most private lives, finances and living situation. Even if people ask for help, many never expect to find me at their door. For me it would be more difficult to know there may be a senior citizen, child or handicapped individual out there hungry and homeless. I always keep focused on the task at hand, helping our fellow creations lift themselves up out of the depths of poverty and getting back on their feet. All that matters is removing the many pains of poverty our fellow Americans may be going through.
I knocked on the door of the apartment and after hearing some talking going on inside, the door was opened by a woman looking to be in her 30s. She said, “Can I help you?” I answered, “I hope so I am looking for …” The woman said, “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t recognize you. You are that man W.C. who helps people. Oh my gosh, I wrote you a letter. I can’t believe you are here. Please, please come in.” I could see she was nervous and embarrassed, as she looked around the apartment real quick, like you do when unexpected company pays a visit. I walked into the small

• Time is now there. The disabled sister then looked at me with a big smile and said, “Does that mean we will be able to have ice cream soon?” The older sister smiled at her younger disabled sister saying, “We will see. We can’t ask for ice cream.” When she looked at me about to apologize, I looked at both sisters and said with a smile, “Yes you can definitely have some ice cream.” She was so happy she hugged her sister, so happy in her simple wish for ice cream that would be fulfilled. I wish all poverty situations were this easy to remedy. The sister put on the old television for the mother and disabled sister so we could talk in the kitchen. We sat to talk at the kitchen table. I asked the sister about her husband and his disappearance. She shared how her husband did not care for the responsibility of her family. He always complained about paying the rent and buying the food, even though her sister’s disability and her mother’s Social Security did contribute to the household expenses. It just was not enough to cover the rent, food, utilities and auto expenses. The sister confessed, “Well, it would have been enough for all of us to live comfortably but my husband liked to go out and drink and play cards. I fought with him each month to have enough money to pay our rent. When he left he took all the money from our account, even the funds I had transferred from my sister’s disability and my mother’s Social Security, which was supposed to be used to help pay the rent. He did not pay the rent or the utilities. I saw the amount gone from our account the day before he left but thought it was our rent and utilities being paid. He was my husband. I loved and trusted him. How stupid I was.” I shared with her several other instances where I had helped under the same circumstances, spouses that did not want any responsibilities in life other than drinking and living in the moment. She said, “I really never even saw this coming,

even with our arguing and his drinking. I never thought he would be capable of leaving us without a care. Leaving me here alone to care for my family, knowing we would be evicted and not have enough money for food.” She began to cry as the hurt and betrayal was still painful to talk about. I asked to see the apartment. It was a reasonably priced twobedroom rental. The disabled sister and mother shared a room. I noted the sagging twin mattresses and put those items on my list. I also noted the ancient television that was obviously on its last leg. I made a note to find a reasonably priced television since it seemed to bring so much pleasure to the disabled sister and mother as they were laughing together in the other room as they watched their show on the blurry screen. The rest of the apartment was about what I expected to find – older furniture and an empty refrigerator except for some Ensure and a few items. The sister said she used all the cash she had left to buy the supplement beverages for her disabled sister and mother. She explained how she had to be real careful to keep enough calories and nutrition in her sister so she did not lose any weight. I asked what her disabled sister liked to eat and texted a list to one of the waiting volunteers. I also added some nutritious food choices for the sister and mother as well. Next we went over the bills that were sitting on the counter. There was a late utility notice and late notices from her landlord. The landlord was trying to work with them but counted on the rent for their own budget. The sister told me the assistance she had applied for and was waiting for her reply. Since her husband had left just over a month ago and had not paid any bills before he left, he had left her in debt. The woman did not even realize he was gone for good for a whole week as he had even left a deceptive letter stating he would be out of town for a
week. She had tried contacting him at work but found out he had quit his job. The old car he had left behind was desperately in need of service. The sister said it was very unreliable and she was afraid to drive her disabled sister or mother anywhere in it because if they broke down neither of them could walk for help. They would be stuck in a hot car waiting for help they could not afford to pay. Our caring and sharing assistance was desperately needed by these three women. How would they survive without our help getting them caught up on their rent and utilities? How would they be able to afford car repairs to provide them with a safe reliable vehicle? How could this loving sister provide the extra nutrition needed by the disabled sister? She would not be able to without The Time Is Now to Help and all of you. We brought this family’s rent up to date and paid two months into the future. I knew it would take at least that long for them to get caught up on everything and for the assistance to begin. It was a good rental for them and I did not want to risk them losing it. Their utilities were also brought up to date and paid into the future. Food was delivered, the car was repaired and twin mattresses were delivered. I stopped by for a visit a few weeks after our assistance and found three happy women watching their new television. The disabled sister was so happy to see me, struggling to say, “Sal, Sal thank you for the ice cream. It was my favorite flavor. Thank you for my TV too. It makes me so happy.” I said to her, “Seeing you happy makes all of us happy.” Making these three wonderful women happy is thanks to all of you and the Paul Ziegler $15,000 matching grant. In the next week we will be finishing distributing your funds matched by Paul Ziegler’s. Thank you to everyone for making this and all our assistance possible. Don’t forget every dollar you
donate at this time will be matched by the Fox Charities spring 2015 $10,000 matching grant. Your generosity in donating to this matching grant is what will make The Time Is Now to Help able to continue our caring and sharing, feeding the hungry, providing shelter, clothing, toiletries, household necessities, helping with utilities for those that would go without gas and electric and providing desperately needed transportation assistance. Thank you and God bless you for helping. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal

Silver Lake residents battle over bow boundaries
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Silver Lake resident Allen Dunski requested that the Silver Lake Village Board discuss the possibility of allowing permitted bow target practicing within the boundaries of Silver Lake at the June 17 regular board meeting. Silver Lake trustee Roger Johnson said he had received numerous phone calls form village residents who were against the idea. “If this is okayed, it will cause a big stir out there,” Johnson said. Trustee Pat Dunn, who put the item on the agenda, said “we are only having a discussion about this. The question came up and in order to talk about it, it has to be on the agenda.” In most of the village, homes are very close together and there was discussion about a possible designated area within the village where bow hunting could be safely practiced with a proper backdrop. Municipal Judge Merlene Engstrom said it would be a nightmare to deal with in her court and that the ordinance currently prohibits it. Dunski commented that every other municipality in the area allow permitted bow shooting, but calls to both Salem and Paddock Lake prove that not to be true. The Salem ordinance reads, “400-3 Missiles and projectiles.

“No person shall throw or shoot any object, arrow, stone, snowball or other missile or projectile by hand or by any other means at any person or at, in or into any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway, park, playground or other public place within the town.” Emily Uhlenhake, Paddock Lake clerk/ treasurer said that while Paddock Lake has a similar ordinance, the village must update that. “In 2013, the state legislature passed ACT 71 That supersedes our current ordinance,” she said. In 29.038, it states, “a local governmental unit may not enact or adopt a restriction that prohibits a person form hunting with a bow and arrow or crossbow within the jurisdiction of that local governmental unit.” What the local governmental unit may do is to place certain restrictions on where the bow hunting or target practice takes place. According to ACT 71, bow hunting may be restricted within a specified distance, not to exceed 100 yards, from a building located on another person’s property. The exception is if the owner of the land on which the building sits has given permission. The person shooting the arrows can also be required to shoot the arrow or bolt toward the ground.

Paddock Lake opposes municipal judge bill By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The Paddock Lake Village Board has passed a resolution in opposition to AB230, which would change state law to require that a municipal judge would need to be an attorney licensed to practice in this state and a member in good standing of the State Bar of Wisconsin. The Paddock Lake resolution states that its municipal court has been “presided over by non-attorney municipal judges for over 45 years.” Currently, any qualified elector of a municipality can be elected or appointed municipal judge. A qualified elector is a U.S. citizen age 18 or older who has resided in an election district or ward for 28 consecutive days prior to the election. AB230 was introduced on May 19 by assembly members Frederick Kessler, D-Milwaukee; Chris Taylor, D-Madison; Edward Brooks, R-Reedsburg; Evan Goyke, D-Milwaukee; and Terese Berceau, D-Madison. The bill could change the qualifications for municipal judges starting on Jan. 1, 2016. It would require that, going forward, any candidate for municipal judge would have to
be a licensed attorney. There are over 200 municipal courts and over 200 municipal judges in Wisconsin. Of these, about half or more are non-attorneys. Village Administrator Tim Popanda pointed out that municipalities usually have an attorney who would be present at court to assist if needed. “The Paddock Lake municipal judge is paid $5,500 a year, and he works about 24 hours a month,” Popanda said. Using only attorneys could create a steep rise in costs. Salem municipal judge Mike Langel has now served several terms and said, “I believe there are nine municipal courts in Kenosha County. Three of those courts have judges that are attorneys, while the other six courts have non-attorney judges. “Each municipality now has the right to choose whether or not the municipal judge in their jurisdiction must be an attorney or not. It is my belief that the choice should stay within the municipality itself. I could also say more, but then one could say I am prejudicial because this new law, if passed, would also affect me.” The Wisconsin Municipal Judges Association is opposed to this bill.

Power tools and potatoes are on my bucket list. One I want to use. The other I want to grow. I’ll let you take it from there. There’s an allure to ripping wood with a band saw or being locked and loaded with nail gun. Ka pow! Pure, formidable, wieldy, strong – power tools. Likewise, there’s a certain appeal to planting tubers and waiting for them to sprout. Ka ping! Mashed, baked, fried or cheesy – potatoes. I hadn’t thought about combining the two – potatoes and power tools – until I read up on potatoes on Pinterest. Then the connection became clear. One enticing post described the ease and functionality of growing potatoes in a large plastic container. You don’t even need a garden! Just dirt, sunshine and water. And a large plastic container (or garbage bag in a pinch). It’s practically magic! Before I could wave my wand and start the show, I had to prepare the container. Potatoes like water, but they don’t want to sit in it. In order to avoid soggy spuds, I needed to create a means of drainage by boring holes into the bottom of my container. This took me from potatoes to bucket list item number two: power tools, or more specifically an electric drill. I needed to find one. I don’t own a drill. Luckily my husband does. He owns lots of power tools. When we do home improvement projects, he gets to hold them. I am the assistant. But not last Tuesday. I had my potato project and he was conveniently
