Throughout the nation during the month of May, George Orson Welles, known professionally as Orson Welles, is being remembered on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Welles is best remembered for his wide-ranging work in the entertainment world. Welles was born in Kenosha on May 6, 1915. The Welles family had long history in Kenosha and made its home in a house facing Library Park. Welles father, Richard, was an inventor who made a fortune with his invention of a bicycle lamp. His mother, Beatrice Ives Welles, was a concert pianist. While the family was affluent its members were far from happy. The parents separated in 1919 and Orson moved with his mother to Chicago. His father also moved to Chicago and decreased his working hours, choosing instead to spend his days feeding his alcoholism. Beatrice supported herself and her son by continuing her career as a pianist, playing at the Art Institute of Chicago. Beatrice died of hepatitis in a Chicago Hospital in 1924

He had been immersed in music while living with his mother but with her death he was no longer interested in a musical career and shunned anything connected with music. For the next three years, Welles lived with his father, first in an apartment in Chicago then traveling to such places as Jamaica and the Far Orson Welles East. For a short time, he lived with his father in a hotel in Grand Detour, Ill., that was owned by Richard Welles – that is they lived there until it burned down. Father and son again took to the road. While Orson spent some time in public school, his real education began in 1926 when he entered the Todd School for Boys, an expensive private school in Woodstock, Ill. Orson’s older brother, Richard Ives Welles, attended the Todd School 10 years earlier but unsuccessfully. He was expelled for behavior prob-

Salem author writes about her grief, afterlife By Anne Trautner STAFF WRITER
Elianna Boyd was a vibrant, healthy 12-year-old who lived with her family in Salem. On a fateful Monday morning in August 2011, Elianna went to her mother, complaining of pain on the right side of her head and numbness on the left side of her body. Within 20 minutes, Elianna lost consciousness. Elianna’s family would later learn that Elianna suffered from an arteriovenous malformation, a condition that occurs when a cluster of cells in the brain didn’t develop properly during fetal development. These cells can hemorrhage at any time during a person’s life, causing the brain to bleed. Three days after the hemorrhage began, on Aug. 11, Elianna died. Elianna’s mother, Louise Suzanne Boyd, prefers to say that is when Elianna passed. “I like to think in terms of her energy passing from this world to the next. Our souls live on,” Boyd said. Since Elianna passed, Boyd said she has received many signs from her daughter that there is life after death. Those signs have brought a light to the darkness of her grief. In hopes of helping others through the grieving process, Boyd wrote a book, entitled “Journey to the Rainbow.”
Elianna has appeared to Boyd in dreams, she said. “She came to me in one dream to tell me she will be forever with me. I have seen her many times in my dreams showing me she is in a peaceful dimension filled with love and light,” Boyd said. “I have sensed a blanket of warm energy around me on several occasions and the time she shouted ‘Mom’ to me was an absolute blessing to experience.” In addition, Elianna has communicated to others via energy and has appeared in dreams to several of her friends from Brighton Elementary School in Kansasville, Boyd said. She has also reached out to Boyd’s husband, Dan, and their children, 13-year-old Daniel and 11year old Jessica. Elianna has communicated the most with Boyd’s sister, Amanda Jane Penny, who lives in Germany, Boyd said. “I had many great moments in which my daughter

came to us. It’s not as often now, but I feel her every once in a while, I still get signs from her,” Boyd said. “Knowing that our souls live on, I am able to live with her death every waking day.” Boyd does not describe herself as religious. “I believe in God and always have, but I wouldn’t say I was religious. However, I have become deeply spiritual. The passing of Elianna caused me to look for answers within, and I have found comfort within my own soul, which opened doors to a deep sense of spirituality.” Boyd said she sees life differently now. “I embrace the little things in life, the small things,” Boyd said. “I have more awareness. Today is what we have.” After Elianna passed, Boyd read many books on spirituality. “The books gave me a lot of comfort, to let us know what happens to us. That the soul lives on. It’s just an ener-
gy change, transformation of energy from this world to the next. That energy cannot be destroyed,” Boyd said. Boyd originally planned to see a medium because she wanted to know that Elianna was all right. “But she just came to us in so many different ways, I didn’t need to do that. It was like she said, ‘Hey Mom, I’m OK,’” Boyd said. That connection has made Boyd stronger. “I was able to filter my strength onto my husband and my children,” Boyd said. As Boyd spoke those words, her daughter Jessica pointed to a rainbow in the sky, which appeared almost on cue. Every time Jessica sees a rainbow, she immediately thinks of Elianna. When Boyd sees a rainbow, she thinks of Elianna, but is also reminded of how far she has come along her journey of grief and her spiritual development.

At first, Boyd said she found herself submerged in grief. As time went on, many layers of grief started peeling away and she began to feel different inside, she said. In the early stages, Boyd experienced emptiness and loneliness within, and other times she would feel happy and would feel like laughing, singing and dancing. “You see, this is how grief is. Grief is a combination of all emotions and feelings. Grief will always lie dormant within us and when certain events/holidays trigger the Grief Everyone grieves differ- memories of our loved ones, these emotions will rise to the ently, Boyd said. “A child’s death is hard to surface in waves. A child should outlive tions will appear for a little their parents and not the other See AUTHOR, Page 9 way around,” Boyd said. “I see the beautiful rainbow, which to me represents so many things such as: hope, light, healing, wisdom and strength,” Boyd said. The title of Boyd’s book, “Journey to the Rainbow,” represents Boyd’s tears falling like the rain. After the rain has stopped, she sees a bright rainbow in the sky, reminiscent of her journey and where she is now. “She’s still here with us. Part of her is still here with us,” Boyd said.

St. Alphonsus School to close
Officials hope to reopen in future as part of All Saints By Anne Trautner STAFF WRITER
With declining enrollment and a growing budget deficit, St. Alphonsus School in New Munster is closing its grade school. The preschool program will remain in operation. Currently there are 14 children enrolled in the 3 and 4-year-old preschool programs, said School Principal Greg Young. The grade school is in the process of developing a partnership with All Saints Catholic School in Kenosha County, Young said. All Saints Catholic School is a regional school that was established in 2011 with two campuses in Kenosha. A third campus will open in the fall in the Town of Paris. The plan for next year is for St. Alphonsus students to attend the All Saints Catholic School in Paris. The Paris site, which has been operating as Providence Catholic School, will open in the fall for the
first time as part of All Saints Catholic School. St. Alphonsus school families are divided on where they will attend next year, Young said. St. Alphonsus leadership hopes to save money during the 2015-2016 academic year so that the school can reopen as a fourth site for All Saints Catholic School the following year, Young said. “The goal is to have the school reopen the next year, in 2016-17,” Young said. “We are hoping the school will reopen after it develops a relationship with All Saints Catholic School.” If the school reopens as an All Saints Catholic School site, it would house classes for students in kindergarten through eighth grade once again. This year, St. Alphonsus had 42 students in kindergarten through eighth grade. “Families have been saddened and frustrated that the school won’t stay open,”
Young said. “Many of the parents feel it was a sudden decision, but with low enrollment and a lack of funds, unless we made a turnaround, it was going to happen eventually.” During the 2015-2016 academic year, the preschool will help fill up the space during the day, and religious education classes will be held in the building on evenings and weekends. Many of the St. Alphonsus teachers have been rehired at the upcoming All Saints West in Paris, Young said. Young, however, is looking for a job. “I’ve only been here for a little over a year, and when I got here the enrollment was very low. From what I understand it has been slowly dwindling for the last five or six years,” Young said. This year, there are 33 families at the school, from preschool through eighth grade, Young said. St. Alphonsus was not able to announce the closing until

it had official approval from Archbishop Jerome Listecki, Young said. “The archdiocese believes that the success of Catholic schools in many struggling communities is through the more regional model,” Young said. Providence Catholic School, a kindergarten through eighth grade school in Paris, will close at the end of the 2014-15 school year and reopen in the fall 2015 as Discover the
a part of All Saints Catholic Schools regional model. The decision to have Providence become a part of All Saints Catholic School was made after the school faced its own financial challenges. According to St. Alphonsus’ website, Catholic education has been offered in New Munster since 1863. “The short term is that the school does need to close, but the long term is that Catholic education will remain in west-
ern Kenosha County through either the All Saints Catholic School model or through the reopening of the St. Alphonsus ‘All Saints’ site a year from now,” Young said. All Saints Catholic School was first created by combining four existing schools. The regional school is now supported by all 10 Kenosha parishes and has an enrollment that has grown from 350 students in its first year to more than 580 students in its fourth year.

lems due to learning difficulties. For Orson the Todd School was his first brush with a stable environment. It was here that he met Roger Hill, a teacher at the school. Hill was to become a lifetime mentor for Welles and encouraged an educational environment that played to his strengths. It was here that Welles first performed and staged theatrical programs and productions. Welles also appeared on the school’s radio station with his first performance being an adaption of Sherlock Homes, which he wrote. Orson Welles’ father, died at the age of 58 alone in a Chicago hotel. His will did not name a guardian for his minor son but left him to choose his own. Roger Hill who had been Orson’s mentor and friend and probably his father figure was his first choice but Hill turned him down. Orson then chose old family friend Maurice Bernstein as his guardian. After graduation from the Todd School, Welles was awarded a scholarship to Harvard while his mentor encouraged him to attend Cornell. Welles did not follow either of these options but chose to spend part of his inheritance traveling. While in Dublin, it is said
that he marched into the Gate Theater and auditioned claiming to be a Broadway star. He was given a part and performed in several supporting roles at the Gate, then produced and designed several of his own productions while in Ireland. Upon returning to the United States, Welles began a project at Todd School that became very successful titled Everybody’s Shakespeare, which he not only wrote but illustrated. It remained a popular textbook series for several decades. Welles moved on to radio in 1934 and also shot his first film at the old firehouse in Woodstock. He was the successful host and producer of many radio programs. Welles popularity continued to grow and he moved on to writing, directing and appearing in movies in the United States, South America, and Europe. One of his most memorable films, “Citizen Kane,” is regarded by many as the best of all time. Supporting the sale of War Bonds and producing many promotions to encourage Americans to purchase them was an important project of Welles. A staunch supporter of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he lobbied for a fourth term
for the President. Many people remember Welles for his radio broadcast of War of the Worlds in which he described an invasion by aliens. The program was aired on Oct. 30, 1938, as part of the Anthology series Mercury Theatre of the Air. Because the program was produced with a news bulletin format, many of those who turned to the station during the production mistook it for a real Martian invasion. Widespread outrage occurred. In the end, this performance actually secured Orson Welles as a true dramatic actor. George Orson Welles, actor, artist, film director, theater director, playwright, screenwriter, film producer and radio personality died in Los Angeles in 1985 of a heart attack. He was buried in Spain. While Kenosha can claim Welles as one of its own, he was also a citizen of the world, leaving his mark on the entire theatrical world and those who attended it. Kenosha is celebrating 2015 as the year of Orson Welles and many activities will be held to honor him. Visit citizenwelles.org to see a list of planned Orson Welles themed activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Young and in love
Our family is growing. Daughter number one recently got engaged, which means there is a wedding and new son-in-law in our future. The engagement took my husband by surprise. I think he was (is?) in denial about our kids growing up. I am right there with him. It’s a river big enough for the both of us. (We’re not getting any older, how can they?) After the big and happy announcement had run its course, with heartfelt hugs and good wishes all around, I got him alone and asked what he thought. He answered with threeand-a-half words. “They’re so young.” I reminded him that when we were the same age as our daughter we weren’t engaged. We were married. And indeed we were so young. And probably not ready for the world at large. It’s a good thing we were completely ignorant of the fact. Ignorant. Young. In love. And poor. But happy. During our fledgling years of wedded bliss we had three part-time jobs between the two of us. We also worked as managers of our apartment complex to get a better rate on rent. Part of that job included cleaning vacated apartments

to prepare them for new renters. In those early days, we wallpapered bathrooms, scrubbed kitchens and vacuumed lobby carpets. It didn’t matter that we’d never hung wallpaper or cleaned an oven before. We learned along the way and considered ourselves fortunate to be trimming from our rent bill. In addition to his working 32 hours a week at a regular job, my husband was still in school and carried a full course load – for three years. He used to study at the dining room table, which doubled as the kitchen table and, come to think of it, was our only table. We purchased it at a garage sale for $35, chairs included. I remember a summer Saturday when we wanted to go to a movie to avoid the heat. We lived near a theater that showed older shows for a discounted price. Matinees were a couple bucks a ticket. After sifting through my purse and his wallet, we were still a little short. I don’t remember feeling the least bit discouraged. Just curious as
to where we might find a half a buck. After looking in drawers and between chair cushions, we went out to the car and searched under the mats. And wouldn’t you know it? We found two quarters, enough to get us into the show! We couldn’t have been happier and didn’t even consider popcorn. It was out of the question but we didn’t care. We had a little hibachi grill on our deck – if you could call the three-by-sixfoot space that. The concrete deck floor was covered in a plastic carpet that was supposed to resemble grass. One time a spark flew from the grill and lit the fake grass on fire. After stomping out the flames, my husband replaced the burnt plastic with a new rectangle of grass from the home improvement store. From then on we didn’t barbecue much. Still don’t. Our deck wasn’t the only thing on fire. A guy living down the hall came home one night and put a pizza in the oven. He must have fallen asleep because the pizza burst

into flames, the alarms went off and they had to evacuate the whole building. The guy threw the burning pizza onto the lawn and it landed under our deck. We were glad none of the sparks flew up to our newly refurbished fake grass, as we had matinee aspirations for our tight budget the following weekend. A short time after that big date we discovered a brand new food chain that served sub sandwiches. For a treat on Saturdays we’d splurge and share one. Still do. Share a sub, that is. Some things never change. And some do. Our family is growing. My husband is right; our daughter and her fiancé are young. But so were we. And there’s nothing Drivers wrong with being young and in love. Nothing at all. CDL DRIVERS RELOCATING

while but then they subside again until the next wave appears. It’s important to embrace these emotions since they become part of our lives. In time, we start to grow stronger within and these memories we have will turn our sadness into smiles again,” Boyd said. Grief strengthens people and becomes a teacher for life. “Elianna’s death has opened up new doors for me. This energy carries me through every waking day so that I am able to live without her. Although we never really lose our loved ones, their spirits are still alive in our hearts and minds, and part of their energy accompanies us throughout our journey,” Boyd said. Boyd has learned difficult lessons through Elianna’s passing, she said. Through those lessons, she has begun to find a peace within. “I am now at the stage of acceptance. I still cry for my daughter and always will, but I have more of a deeper understanding about life,” Boyd said. Souls live on because they consist of energy and consciousness that never die, Boyd said. “I have also learned that heaven and earth are connected,” Boyd said. “The love we have for one another will always live on.” Book Boyd, who is 49, wanted to share the lessons she learned from Elianna’s passing with others, so she decided to write a book. She asked Penny to coauthor the book.
“I wanted her to be a part of my book because she experienced communication from Elianna, and she is a brilliant writer,” Boyd said. Boyd hopes that the 169page book expresses what a mother goes through when they lose a child. More importantly, she wants it to show that life exists beyond death. “I want to make people aware of that through my experiences with my daughter,” Boyd said. Boyd said she has received a lot of positive feedback. “It’s been really great, so many people have loved reading the book,” Boyd said. “It has helped many people.” In the book, Penny wrote about Elianna as she now sees her – as a tree fairy, happy in a natural and highly spiritual environment, somewhere between Heaven and Earth, Boyd said. “It is a beautiful story. It is sad, but it is beautiful,” Boyd said. “It shows that love doesn’t die. It shows that our loved ones live on, and there is no gap between heaven and earth.”

Boaters just want to have fun and there are some simple precautions you can take to make sure fun happens. May 16 through 22 has been declared National Boating Safety week by The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the civilian arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. This year’s boating safety theme is “Wear it – Always Wear Your Life Jacket” and boating safety week coincides with the unofficial kickoff of the 2015 boating season. Wisconsin has 620,000 registered boats – the sixth most in the United States. There are many boating accidents that could be avoided by taking precautions in addition to always wearing your life jacket. According to the Coast Guard, the top five contrib-

The Coast Guard Auxilary also advises that before you venture out on the water, make sure your watercraft is safe. The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary provides complementary vehicle examinations. The examiner will make sure that your watercraft complies with state and federal regulations and check safety gear to verify it is present and in working order. Call vessel examination officer Duane Konkel at 262303-6011.
