When Kenosha was the mini Motorcity

While Detroit has been called the automobile capitol of the country, it is not the only city well known for the production and development of automobiles. Beginning in 1901 automobile production began in Kenosha and continued until 1988. Thomas B. Jeffrey was originally a bicycle manufacturer in Chicago. In 1897 his bicycles, called the Rambler, were very popular, but Jeffrey became interested in the automobile and developed his first prototype. His designs received positive acclaim at the 1899 Chicago International Exhibition and Tournament and later at the first National Automobile Show held in New York City, leaving him ready to enter the automobile business. Jeffrey moved to Kenosha in 1900 where he purchased the old Sterling Bicycle Co. factory at the lakefront and set up his production – a move that would turn Kenosha into one of the leading automobile manufacturing centers. By 1902 production was in high gear with Jeffrey mass-producing automobiles. He named his automobile the Rambler just as he had named his bicycles. The Rambler became the first automobile to incorporate a steering wheel instead of the tiller-controlled

steering mechanism of the day. With 1,500 automobiles being produced in this first year, the Jeffrey Company was the second largest automobile manufacturer at the time with only Oldsmobile producing more. The Rambler continued to dominate the market until 1914 when Thomas B. Jeffrey’s son, Charles, who replaced his father as head of the company following Thomas Jeffrey’s death in 1910, changed the name of the auto. Thomas renamed the popular automobile the Jeffrey to honor his father. The name did not last long due to the purchase of the company by Charles Nash in 1916. By 1917 the company name became Nash Motor Company, dropped the Jeffrey name and began to manufacture Nash autos. Among the lines of Nash automobiles was the return of the popular Rambler, this time as a smaller car that could be produced inexpensively to attract buyers in the post-World War II era. By 1937 the company merged with Kelvinator, an appliance maker and George W. Mason succeeded Nash as by the Chairman of the new Nash-Kelvinator Company. The start of the Korean War brought shortages in the availability of steel and other raw materials needed for the

continued production of automobiles. Changes included increased production of compact cars and different designs to save on steel use. Two-door autos became more popular as was the addition of a convertible top another way to save on steel use. With the end of the Korean War, the popular Rambler line increased with the introduction of several new models. First were a station wagon and a two-door hardtop, which was unofficially known as “the Country Club.” The line continued to be expanded in 1954 with the addition of a four-door sedan and a new station wagon called the Cross Country, which had been built on a stretched wheelbase, the perfect auto for that cross country family vacation. That year also brought another first for automobiles. A combination heating and air conditioning unit could be added on to any Rambler or could be installed at the factory for $395. The company underwent changes again in 1954 when Nash-Kelvinator merged with Detroit based Hudson Company. The companies combined into The American Motors Corporation and Hudson production was moved to Kenosha. In the following years Ramblers were marketed under

The Survivors of Suicide Support group will take place on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Piasecki Althaus Family Services Center located at 2002 52nd St. in Kenosha. The groups are facilitated by certified grief and loss coach, Charlie Hansen. The meeting dates are as follows: Feb. 3 and 17, March 3 and 17, April 7 and 21, May 5 and 19. Each year over 40,000 people die by suicide in the U.S., and over 1 million die worldwide. Kenosha County has lost over 300 people to suicide since 2000 and every one of the deaths is survived by loved ones and friends.

I failed; both are alive and both called out ‘he’ and worst of all I left a knife and both gloves there before I accidentally cut myself. “No, there’s more I may have cut myself on the window. Police were called and I wasted more than 30 minutes standing over them and panicked. I’m so (expletive).” In the journal, Kaehne also allegedly wrote that he knew he couldn’t write off the incident as breaking and entering, and he was going to try and get rid of the evidence and “stay inside for as long as I can.” One of the investigators added that, during a search of Kaehne’s room, a diagram of the human body was found – with handwritten arrows pointing to areas such as the throat, neck, spine, heart and kidneys. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 28.

Kaehne also allegedly told investigators he stood over the couple for about 40 minutes while both were sleeping – and that he knew if he had killed one of them, he would have to kill the other and run. When police searched Kaehne’s residence, a brown journal was found. Kaehne allegedly told police that the

A 28-year-old Kansasville man is facing attempted homicide charges after breaking into a Town of Dover home with the intent of killing its occupants early Jan. 17. Ronald E. Kaehne has been charged with two counts attempted first-degree intentional homicide, Ronald E. as well as Kaehne armed burglary and substantial battery with use of a dangerous weapon. All four charges are felonies. Kaehne’s bail was set at $500,000 during an initial appearance in Racine County Circuit Court Jan. 20. According to the criminal complaint from the Racine County District Attorney’s office, deputies were dispatched to the home in Dover at about 2:42 a.m. Saturday. The criminal complaint painted a terrifying scene, with a woman who lives in the home describing waking up at 2:30 in the morning to her boyfriend “flailing his arms” and then fighting with someone. During the fight, the boyfriend’s throat was cut with

Governor crushes casino proposal Tax liability too great Walker says

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker announced Friday that he will not approve a proposed Menominee Indian Hard Rock Café Casino for Kenosha. “After a comprehensive review of the potential economic impact of the proposed Kenosha casino project, the risk to the state’s taxpayers is too great,” Walker said in a statement released by his office. “Due to the compacts negotiated by (former Gov. Jim) Doyle, the current cost to taxpayers of approving the proposed casino project is up to $100 million and the long-term economic hit to the state budget would be a potential loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.” The casino would have been built off reservation on the grounds of the former Dairyland Greyhound Park. The proposal had drawn both supporters and detractors over the past year, as Walker pledged a thorough investigation into the matter. Because of a gaming compact negotiated by Doyle’s administration in the past, the state faced liability if the proposed casino took any money away from the Potawatomi casinos. In the weeks before the decision, television ads aired on both sides of the issue. Politicians across the state expressed disappointment in the decision Friday, but laid the blame in different places. Republican lawmakers blamed Doyle.

The 40 acres that the Town of Salem purchased last year for a possible business park may soon be developed. The Kenosha Area Business Alliance is eyeing the site – and a partnership with the town – to make it happen. According to KABA President Todd Battle, the organization is working on purchasing an additional 42 acres adjacent to the property, which sits east of the town highway and fire department building on Highway C. When that purchase goes through, the site will have nearly 82 raw acres. Sixteen acres will be earmarked for public right-of-way (roads, water, sewer), storm water management and wetlands/environmental areas, which will leave 63 to 66 developable acres. Battle said this will be a true partnership between KABA and Salem, with KABA contributing more than $3 million for infrastructure improvements, with the town contributing between $4 millionand $5 million. “The town bought the 40 acres with the intent of making it available for economic use,” said Salem Town Administrator Pat Casey. “The price of the land ($331,840) and timing of the purchase was good. The town is now just following through with the original intent.”

Battle said that he has heard enough positive feedback that KABA is willing to put up funds for the project. The Salem Planning and Zoning Commission will review the concept plan and work on the rezoning. The next meeting for that commission is Wed., Jan 28 at 7 p. m.

Development of this land would diversify the town’s tax base, which Casey said would end up lowering taxes. The town has been working with KABA and Kenosha County on a concept plan that has 12 lots. “That plan is not set in stone. It could be fewer lots,” Casey said. “The height of any buildings would be similar to the highway/fire department building and, within guidelines, we would tailor lots to business needs.” The next step will be to change zoning. Currently, the land is zoned agriculture, although the town land use plan calls for business and light commercial in that area. Once the zoning change is complete, the town can then work on creating a 20-year tax incremental finance district (TIF). Last year, the state legislature provided towns with a population of more than 5,000 and an assessed value of more than a half billion dollars to create TIFs. In a TIF district, the property tax amount is set and remains the same for the schools, county and village. As property values increase and property taxes rise, those additional monies are used to pay back loans taken out for improvements. In this case, the monies would be paid back both the town and KABA. The Kenosha County VITA Coalition will offer income tax filing assistance to low-income residents beginning next month. Working in partnership with the United Way of Kenosha County, Carthage College, the Kenosha County Job Center, Gateway Technical College and other community organizations, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program provides basic income tax preparation services for households that earn $53,000 or under annually. IRS-certified volunteers are ready to assist taxpayers to complete and e-file their tax returns. Financial literacy in-

formation will also be available at each of the tax sites. VITA is offered throughout Kenosha County. A Silver Lake man who fell over a second floor railing at Bayshore Town Center died Jan. 21 at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to the Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office. The victim, Dustin Strzelecki, 21, was transported to Froedtert by Flight for Life helicopter after being stabilized by North Shore Fire Department EMS immediately following the incident on Jan. 12 at the Glendale mall. According to several news reports, witnesses told police that Strzelecki fell backward over a handrail after apparently attempting to slide down the railing. Witnesses also told investigators that Strzelecki may have had four to six alcoholic beverages prior to the incident. Strzelecki graduated form Westosha Central High School in 2012 and according to Diann Tesar, who taught there, “is a terrific young man, a hard worker and very ambitious.” He is a third year

engineering student at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. His mother, Julia Krupa Strzelecki, on the GoFundMe page she created, said the hospital planned to keep him paralyzed for much of this week prior to his death. He was receiving medication to reduce swelling of his brain and an antibiotic to fight pneumonia, the post said. According to police reports, on Jan. 12, at about 9:20 p.m., the Glendale Police Department and the North Shore Fire Department responded to the Bayshore Town Center Rotunda to investigate a fall from the upper level of the mall. They found Strzelecki, who was unconscious at the base of a stairwell in the rotunda. Police interviewed approximately 20 witnesses, and determined it to be an accident. According to various news reports, one witness said he saw Strzelecki fall backwards off the railing. Another said he watched as Strzelecki attempted to slide down the railing of the stairwell and then saw him falling backwards over the railing.

We were high school sweethearts and got married right after I graduated high school. My husband went on to college and I supported us with my job. The arrangement was perfect for both men and they had managed to live together for the past five years. I told her how we would be helping to remove the stress of paying her overdue bills and for her much needed car repairs. I went over her car and saw it needed some additional work she had not been able to afford. I set her car up for an appointment for repairs and evaluation. After we finished going over her bills I asked if I could meet her son and his roommate. The mother said she would love for me to meet both men. I set up a time to meet her at their apartment the next day. She asked me to not mention the reason I was there, to help them financially. The following day I met the mother at the door of her son’s apartment. As I walked in the son was helping his handicapped roommate into

his chair with a lift. The son was happy to show me all the steps he took to do this safely. The two men spoke amicably and it was easy to see they shared a special bond from the years of living together and helping each other. The son introduced his handicapped friend by saying, “This is my best friend. We help each other.” We talked about how they assisted each other and how interesting it was to see how they helped each other. Both men agreed they could never live alone. They both hugged the mother and said, “And Mom helps us too.” I saw the mother’s face light up and noticed the tears in her eyes when they said this. Then the son said, “Dad used to help us too but not anymore. Mom says he’s in heaven. I don’t know why he can’t come visit me anymore.” The handicapped roommate said, “You know Dad would be here if he could. Just like Mom said he is in heaven now.” I could see the mother was trying to remain strong for her son and agreed with the roommate. I also found out the roommate did not have any family that cared for him

and this woman was like a mother to him as well. After our help with bringing the mother’s lot rent and utilities up to date and the additional car repairs needed to make her car safe she was able to get by on her own once again. I began to see joy return her face as she was once again involved in caring for her “two sons.” God bless everyone, W.C./Sal

Now, Kehl said, it’s time to bring the concept to the community. “I want to be their personal trainer at home, take this one person at a time, and help them start doing a little self maintenance that everybody is entitled to and should be working on,” he said. He said he’s working on creating seminars to help people work exercise and fitness tips into their everyday life. “If you have the right mindset it’s not that hard,” he said. “Start slow and take it one day at a time. Maybe the first day you don’t get home from working in the office all day and sitting at desk, to driving home in your car and plopping down on the couch. “That first day, instead of sitting down, even if the first thing you do is turn the TV on, make the second thing standing for a full minute. The next day, make it 2 minutes. On the third day, try standing on one leg for those 2 minutes, it will help improve your balance.” Kehl said the most important thing is to build on the new activity every day to make it a habit. “Start small and work into a habit and most importantly, acknowledge that you’re doing something that you need to do. Give yourself a reward because as you go this way with something positive, you’re moving away from the negative.”

Most people pay much more attention to maintaining their car than their own physical and mental condition. We believe that the big thing is to get people to believe that big change is possible … that they are not just the product of their genes and their environment. Rather, they really do have the freedom to decide if they are worth at least a little tune-up; perhaps even a major overhaul. We believe that if they have the latest and best information, with a little confidence they will be able to make better decisions. We understand the frustration to the point of despair that some feel after years of suffering through overpromised diets and exercise regimes that result in no meaningful change. We have seen where simple changes in perspective and attitude make the awful sense of defeated resignation impossible. With solid, practical information and the right attitude dramatic change is not only possible, it is guaranteed. It really should not be as hard as many people have had to suffer in the past.

Police chase, catch thief with asthma STAFF WRITER

An Illinois man ran from Delavan police after he was allegedly spotted trying to steal a computer from Walmart, and was tackled by an off-duty police officer along Highway 50 after reaching into his waistband for his inhaler. Anthony L. Evans, 35, of Freeport, Ill., was charged in Walworth County Circuit Court with felony bail jumping, three counts of retail theft, criminal damage to property and two counts of disorderly conduct after the Jan. 13 incident. Delavan police were called to Walmart at about 9:15 a.m. Jan. 13 for a report of a man, later identified as Evans, and a woman who were suspected in previous thefts from Walmart and were seen that day trying to remove a security device from a secured computer, according to police. As the officer approached Walmart, Evans and the woman were quickly exiting the grocery entrance of Walmart, and Evans fled when the officer yelled,

“Police, stop!” according to the police report. Evans initially ran east toward East Geneva Street, turned and went west toward GameStop, and then crossed to the south side of East Geneva Street and ran toward Interstate 43, according to the report. Several vehicles had to slow down or stop to avoid hitting Evans as he ran across Highway 50. The officer, who was chasing Evans on foot, got into a Mercy Hospital emergency vehicle that was among the cars that had to slow to avoid Evans, according to the report. The Mercy vehicle activated its lights and pursued Evans. At the same time, an off-duty Delavan police officer had heard the call over the police radio regarding the foot pursuit and went to the area where he approached Evans, who was, at that point, walking along Highway 50, according to the report. Evans began to run when the officer, who was not in uniform, got closer to him. The officer yelled, “Stop, police!” and began to chase Evans.

The Mercy emergency vehicle and another squad car with its lights activated arrived as the off-duty officer was chasing Evans. The officer saw Evans make a quick movement to his waistband with his right hand, and, at that point, tackled Evans to the ground, according to the report. The officer riding in the Mercy emergency vehicle also saw Evans reach for his waistband and drew his service weapon and pointed it at Evans before the off-duty officer tackled Evans, according to police. At that point, the officer returned his gun to its holster and placed Evans in handcuffs. Police said Evans was breathing heavy and told the officer he had asthma and was reaching for his inhaler. Police then called for an ambulance, which took Evans to Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center for medical clearance before he was taken to the Walworth County Jail. Evans is expected to appear in court Friday on the four felony and three misdemeanor offenses.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 30 minutes of physical activity a day for adults, 60 minutes for children, at least five days a week. Sound daunting? It’s much easier than it sounds. There are plenty of everyday ways to get moving. Being active doesn’t require joining a gym. Working exercise into daily activities will help make it a habit. Owls soar in exhibit at Glacial Park By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT

Owl lovers will enjoy a visit to the Only Owls Travelling Art Exhibit currently showing at the Lost Valley Visitor Center at Glacial Park in Ringwood, Ill. This exhibit contains 40 pieces of artwork celebrating owls. The artists have rendered owl images in pencil, ink, charcoal, woodcuts and watercolors. These pieces are part of the collection of the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. Founded in 1973, the museum strives to provide audiences with quality art experiences and to enhance lives through art. In addition, the McHenry County Conservation District is blending the collection with owl facts and artifacts for a display that satisfies the desire to learn with an appreciation of art. So far this year, the district has hosted programs such as “Owls of McHenry County” and an “Owl Prowl” to meet and observe live owls. Winter is an excellent time to observe owls as most of them do not migrate. With long, dark nights, winter is

the beginning of owl breeding and nesting season. Without leaves, trees do not hide the owls as well as in other seasons so they are easier to spot. Owls have inspired and/ or terrified people for centuries. Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom, and Minerva, Roman goddess of wisdom, both kept a wise owl nearby to advise them. Other cultures considered the owl a symbol of doom or evil. Harry Potter fans remember his owl, Hedwig, with great fondness. Even Winnie the Pooh has wise, old Owl as a friend. Here are some fun facts about owls: • There are more than 200 species of owls in the world. Only 19 species are found in North America. • Antarctica is the only continent without owls. • An owl has three eyelids: one for blinking, one for keeping the eye clean and healthy and one for sleeping. • An owl has four toes – two facing forward and two facing backward, giving the owl a very strong, powerful grip. • The flattened facial disc of an owl helps funnel sounds

to its ears and can magnify sounds up to 10 times. • A group of owls is called a parliament. • Owls have 14 vertebrae in their necks and can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees. Other bird species only have seven vertebrae in their necks. • An owl has specialized feathers which muffle sound to allow the owl to fly silently. * An owl’s feathers make excellent camouflage to help them blend into their surroundings. • The Elf Owl is the only species of owl to add fruit and seeds to its diet of meat. • A barn owl can eat up to 1,000 mice each year and many farmers appreciate their help in controlling rodent populations. • Owls love to eat hedgehogs. They also can eat fish and larger game such as fawns, young wolves, large herons and warthogs. Winterfest offers frozen fun Snow sculpting contest highlights Lake Geneva festival Lake Geneva’s Winterfest opened this week and continues through Feb. 7. The annual festival features music, magic, refreshments, activities, helicopter rides, shopping and dining. Scheduled events for the week of Winterfest include laser tag, beach party, s’mores, bonfire and human dog sled races. For nearly two decades the highlight of Winterfest has been the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition, and this year is not exception. The 19th annual snow-sculpting competition begins at Wednesday, Jan. 28, and wraps up Friday, Jan. 30. Visitors can watch sculpting teams from all over the United States create snow masterpieces from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Riviera Park on the lakefront in downtown Lake Geneva. Teams sculpt late into the night on Friday as well. Sculpting ends at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Condition of the snow cannot be guaranteed. If snow is not available and snow-making is not possible, an ice-carving competition will be held.

The teams consist of three members 18 years and older from the same state. Amateurs and professionals are eligible. Additional sculpting assistance is not allowed except that given by competition organizers and grounds crew. The final sculpture must fit within a 12-foot circle, height is optional. Sculptors may provide their own tools at their own risk and liability. No power tools are permitted. Snow removal equipment, axes, machetes, buckets, shovels, long-handled ice scrappers and ladders will be available on site. The individual artists are judged the sculptures and winners will be determined based on these recommended criteria: • Creativity – originality of expression (50 percent); • Technique – utilization of materials, excellence in execution and presentation (30 percent); • Message – visual force of message (20 percent). First-place winner receive the U.S. National Competition Champions Award and trophy invitation to compete in Association International de Sculpture sur Neige et Glace sanctioned International Snow Sculpting Competition. Second-place winners receive the State of Wisconsin Award and trophy. Third-place receives the City of Lake Geneva Award and trophy. The Gene Kempfer People’s Choice Award is determined by public vote held on the site of the competition. The Klaus Ebeling OMM
