Riding the rails From 1855, trains have provided service from Chicago to Kenosha By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Prior to the mid 1800s, transportation across the United States was accomplished by two basic means – horse and boat. Immigrants to the Midwest often took the water route through the Great Lakes from New England. From there they would travel by horseback or horse-drawn wagons onward to their western destination. Those hoping to travel in a more southerly direction often traveled overland in horse and wagons as we have seen in many movies depicting the wagon trains. In the mid 1800s, the rails made their way across the nation and in 1855 the trains reached Kenosha. In that year, the train first arrived in Kenosha when the predecessors of the Chicago and North Western railroad, then known as the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad, and the Green Bay, Milwaukee and Chicago Railroad joined just south of present day 52nd Street. The train station in Keno-

sha was originally opened by the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad in 1855. By 1881 the line became the Chicago & North Western Railroad, which continued to manage the station. Intercity travel continued through the station until 1971 when the last intercity passenger train stopped there. The Chicago & North Western Railroad continued to provide commuter service to Chicago but train service from Kenosha to Milwaukee vanished. The Amtrak Hiawatha, which provided service from Chicago to Milwaukee, ceased to stop at the Kenosha station. Today the Amtrak train to Milwaukee stops in Sturtevant. According to some of the riders from Kenosha, there is no easy way to get to Sturtevant by public transportation. In 1984 Metra took over the commuter services for the Chicago area. The North Line was scheduled to end at Waukegan, the last stop in Illinois. Because of the many riders were from Kenosha,

the line was allowed to continue to service Kenosha, thus making it the only Metra stop located in Wisconsin. In 1995 the Chicago and Northwestern line was absorbed into Metra and service was continued but at this time it was provided by the Union Pacific Railroad. While the majority of the trains on

the North line terminate in Waukegan, nine inbound and nine outbound trains travel to Kenosha each weekday. Many residents of Kenosha are commuters to Chicago where they are employed. Other residents of Kenosha hop the train to go to Chicago for a day of shopping, lunch or the theater. By the

same token, Chicagoans take the train from Ogilvie Station in Chicago to Kenosha to spend a day enjoying the museums and lakefront activities such as a stroll through Harbor Park in the days of summer. Although the train station was built in 1855 it has undergone a rebuilding from 2004

told me of the struggles they had gone through in order for him to be independent. She had fought her whole life to keep her son out of institutions and group homes. Her son shared an apartment with a physically disabled person that relied on him for his strength in lifting him in and out of his wheelchair and with bathing. In exchange the physically disabled roommate managed all the bill paying and other things that might require more skills than her son had acquired. The arrangement was perfect for both men and they had managed to live together for the past five years. I told her how we would be helping to remove the stress of paying her overdue bills and for her much needed car repairs. I went over her car and saw it needed some additional work she had not been able to afford. I set her car up for an appointment for repairs and evaluation. After we finished going over her bills I asked if I could meet her son and his roommate. The mother said she would love for me to meet both men. I set up a time to meet her at their apartment the next day. She asked me to not mention the reason I was there, to help them financially. The following day I met the mother at the door of her son’s apartment. As I walked in the son was helping his handicapped roommate into his chair with a lift. The son was happy to show me all the

steps he took to do this safely. The two men spoke amicably and it was easy to see they shared a special bond from the years of living together and helping each other. The son introduced his handicapped friend by saying, “This is my best friend. We help each other.” We talked about how they assisted each other and how interesting it was to see how they helped each other. Both men agreed they could never live alone. They both hugged the mother and said, “And Mom helps us too.” I saw the mother’s face light up and noticed the tears in her eyes when they said this. Then the son said, “Dad used to help us too but not anymore. Mom says he’s in heaven. I don’t know why he can’t come visit me anymore.” The handicapped roommate said, “You know Dad would be here if he could. Just like Mom said he is in heaven now.” I could see the mother was trying to remain strong for her son and agreed with the roommate. I also found out the roommate did not have any family that cared for him

and this woman was like a mother to him as well. After our help with bringing the mother’s lot rent and utilities up to date and the additional car repairs needed to make her car safe she was able to get by on her own once again. I began to see joy return her face as she was once again involved in caring for her “two sons.” God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: Make checks payable to: The Time Is Now to Help, P.O. Dear W.C., My husband passed away a year ago. I still am so devastated. We had been married for 42 years. We were high school sweethearts and got married right after I graduated high school. My husband went on to college and I supported us with my job. Our son was born a few years after we were married and he had many problems during the birth. He has special needs that never allowed him to marry or hold a job. It took many years for me to teach him how to live on his own, with some help from me and his roommate. I never had any other children or a job as I devoted myself completely to helping my son learn. My son always had an overwhelming desire to live independently, as he saw many others do. My husband was such a good father and when he was not working he spent all his free time with our son. Our son has really struggled to understand why his father is no longer here. When I tell him about his father’s heart attack he just does not understand. It has taken a real toll on both of us. My husband was my best friend and the breadwinner in our family. We not only did everything together he also took care of all the bills and repairs. Since my husband’s death I have not been able to afford any car repairs. Since my son does not drive due to his disabilities I take him to all his doctor’s appointments and for food. My car broke down last month and it took my whole Social Security check to get it repaired. I had no choice, as that car is our only means of transportation. Now I am unable to pay

Police investigate cyber-bullying threat at Carthage College On Jan. 20, at 10:38 p.m., officers of the Kenosha Police Department received a “cyber-bullying” complaint in which the victim was on Facebook and claimed to be a Carthage College student. The suspect in this case posted a photo of a handgun and an assault type rifle, and threatened to go to Carthage to shoot the victim and anyone who got in his way. Carthage College was contacted imme-

diately and warned of the potential threat. Carthage College Administration sent notices of the threat to students and staff members. The case was assigned to the Kenosha Police Detective Bureau for follow up, and with the assistance of the Kenosha Police Gang Unit, the suspect was identified as 24-year-old Kenosha resident, Anthony Donelson.

Through the investigation, it was learned that neither party has ties to Carthage College. On Jan. 22, members of the gang unit convinced Donelson to turn himself in at the Police Department. Donelson is currently being held in the Kenosha County Jail on a probation parole warrant, and charges of disorderly conduct and substantial batter stemming from an incident in December 2014.

Kenosha Polar Plunge is Saturday Hundreds of winter warriors will plunge into icy water to raise funds for Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes during the Kenosha Polar Plunge. The event is scheduled for Saturday at the Brat Stop, 12304 75th St., Kenosha. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the opening ceremonies are scheduled for 12 p.m. The post-plunge party lasts from 1 to 5 p.m. and features food, beverages and live music by the New Vinyls. Among those ready to take the plunge are: • Carthage College students who have raised hundreds of dollars so far for Special Olympics Wisconsin; • Employees from Walgreens, who have raised funds to “Toss their Boss;” • Diehard participants from Cabin Fever Group who have plunged for years and are the top fundraisers; • Radio personality Emily from WIIL Rock, who annually

Last year, 300 participants took the Polar Plunge in Kenosha and raised more than $59,000 for local athletes. In addition to Kenosha, the Polar Plunge will take place at 13 locations across Wisconsin this year. Donations provide year-round programming in sports, health, education, and community building to change the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Visitor center hosts First Friday events The Kenosha Area Convention and Visitors Bureau invites the public to a free and informative monthly event called First Fridays. The next event takes place Feb. 6 from noon to 3 p.m. at the I-94 Visitor Information Center. Meet the people behind some of our local attractions and businesses, and collect ideas for things to see and do in Kenosha and throughout Wisconsin this winter. The I-94 Visitor Information Center is at the southeast corner of I-94 and Hwy. 165, at 10519 - 120th Ave. (Exit 347). For more details, call the I-94 Center at (262) 8577164 or the Downtown Kenosha Center at (262) 654-7307 or (800) 654-7309.

Couple arrested for parental abduction The Lake County, Ill., Sheriff’s Office last week arrested an area couple who are wanted in Las Vegas for abducting their own children to avoid possible abuse charges. At 11:20 p.m. on Jan. 27 a Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy on patrol spotted what he described as suspicious activity in the truck parking lot of the Victor Ruiz- Truckstops of Garcia America in unincorporated Russell. Investigation by the deputy showed that a female identified as Maria Rosaline Malagon-Castillo, 40, of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., had a 2007 outstanding arrest warrant out of Las Vegas for non-custodial parental abduction Maria that had Malagonoccurred in Castillo 2006. Further investigation showed the male later identified as Victor Manuel Ruiz-Garcia, 39, was also wanted by Las Vegas Metro

Police for the same 2006 noncustodial parental abduction. Officials determined that Ruiz-Garcia, an over-theroad truck driver, had a fake Nevada commercial driver’s license, because his had been suspended. Both children related to the Las Vegas arrest warrants, and listed as missing through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, were located by Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies in the 7800 block of 88th Street in Pleasant Prairie. Lake County Sheriff’s detectives conducted an investigation and found that both children were deemed wards of the State of Nevada in 2006. The parents fled Nevada with the two children to avoid an investigation by Las Vegas police into an allegation of drug abuse of Malagon-Castillo during pregnancy. The children, ages 14 and 9, were turned over to a family member with the permission of the Clark County, Nevada, Department of Family Services pending review of the case in Nevada. Ruiz-Garcia and MalagonCastillo were remanded to the Lake County Jail on no bond pending extradition to Nevada.

Andrew Lavin (from left), his mother, Lori, and his father, Mike, work together to prepare a meal for the Food Network show “Guy’s Grocery Games.” The family won $14,000 on the show.

Area chef, family triumph in TV event They top three other families in Food Network competition

By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER

As it turned out, there was a reason why Burlington chef Mike Lavin called his son a rock star last week, in anticipation of the airing of the “Guy’s Grocery Games,” a televised cooking competition. Andrew Lavin had a major part in all three of the family’s challenge victories, and helped the family come away with $14,000 from the final shopping spree. “He was pretty awesome, wasn’t he?” Mike Lavin said on Tuesday. “He was great.” The family outlasted three others on the final family-style episode of the Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games,” putting together a Wisconsin version of eggs benedict with sausage and a creamy cheese sauce, an inexpensive comfort food second effort of a pan-seared pork chop with brussel sprouts and fennel slaw, and a final five-star meal of parmesan-crusted salmon with fettuccini in a vegetable sauce with roasted asparagus. In the money-making round, the family had two minutes to find 10 different items. With a good deal of help from Andrew, the family finished with seven and came up just short of the eighth – caffeine-free tea. Receiving $2,000 for each item, the family earned $14,000, which Mike

Lavin earmarked for Andrew’s college fun and something for the whole family. Each of the challenges featured a twist. In the first, families were required to use raisins as an ingredient. Andrew came up with the idea of making an apple/raisin salsa for the potato pancakes that went with the eggs benedict. On the second challenge – after being given just $9.52 to shop with, albeit with coupons – the head chef of the family was forced to sit out the majority of the challenge. The Lavin family survived, but not without a few burnt potatoes. In the third challenge, the family couldn’t use a shopping cart. Once both families carried their items back to the cooking area, the final twist was announced – families had to switch cooking stations. So, instead of Andrew taking charge of filet mignon, the family worked with salmon. “(During) none of the challenges do you have any clue what’s going on,” Mike Lavin said. “Lori and Andrew both had to (manage), without any direction or help from me … but people know how to cook.” In particular, Andrew drew praise in the final challenge for his asparagus, which he roasted with salt, pepper and oil. “I think the roasted asparagus

with salt, pepper and oil is a lot more classy,” he said, in comparison to the other family’s approach to blanch the asparagus. “It was pretty cool, and pretty crazy,” Andrew said of the entire experience. The three judges acknowledged the “narrowest margin ever” between the two final families, but the Lavins moved on. Mike said his family members just couldn’t get their eyes on decaffeinated tea. “We just couldn’t find it,” Mike said. “Something that says decaffeinated tea is really, really hard to find.’ “And that time flew so fast.” But with everything that took place during the episode, Mike said he walked away feeling pretty good. “For all that you’re given in the timeframe, I think we were pretty proud of what we put up,” said Mike, who is chef for Gooseberries Catering in Burlington. “We felt we did what was the best under the timeframe we had. “It shows the reality of the situation.” His wife, Lori, agreed. “It was great,” Lori said. “I was very, very proud of my husband and my son. “It was a great family experience,” she added. “We laughed, we sweated – we fretted.”

Salem students use talents to benefit Sharing Center For the second year in a row, Salem students in grades K through 4 have used their talents to create art for charity. Salem art teachers Brittany Stalker and Chanda Droske coordinated the program through Square 1 Art. Each student began by creating a unique work in art class, and through Square 1, families were able to purchase products such as bags, mugs and phone cases with children’s artwork printed on them. All proceeds benefited The Sharing Center, a local food and resource center in nearby Trevor. Salem students donated the profit of $1,357.03 realized from 124 orders. “I originally came about this project through an art blog that listed a variety of different ideas for art fundraising,” Stalker explained. “Square 1 Art seemed to be the best fit for our school because of our large student population. “I had a lot of good feedback from last year and parents are happy to have participated in a fundraiser that offered memorable products rather than food items,” she added. When the art was sent away, Square 1 Art sent back a free sheet of stickers with the artwork printed on them and a catalog. Parents were able to choose the artwork and item they wished to purchase. The items range is price from $7 to $10 and can be purchased on-line. The effort last year raised $1,379. Stalker said that the timing of the fundraiser is perfect since many products are ordered as holi-

day gifts. “Schools usually have these fundraisers to raise money for the art department of schools,” Stalker said, “but I felt it is important for students to make the connection and understand that art is very important and can go a long way in giving back to the community, this being one example. “It is important to support The Sharing Center because it is local and familiar,” she added. “A lot of students have said they’ve helped volunteer there, donated, or may even be benefiting from their resources.” Sharon Pomaville, Executive Director of The Sharing Center, accepted the check and explained that it will be used to purchase a variety of everyday necessities to be distributed to families and people in need of items. Pomaville said the donation is greatly beneficial and will go a long way in providing services to the community. In 2013, The Sharing Center served 277 Salem residents. In Twin Lakes, that number is 120, Bristol 63, Silver Lake 60, Wheatland, 41, Paddock Lake 16 and 19 in the city of Kenosha. The Sharing Center also serves a small number of families in the municipalities of Genoa City, Brighton, Randall, Paris, and Pleasant Prairie. There is a small homeless population as well that do not claim an address. The Sharing Center is located at 25700 Wilmot Rd in Trevor. The telephone number is 262-2985535. Visit the Center on the web at http://www.thesharingcenter. net.

Slippery roads claim life of woman, 21 A 21-year-old Waterford woman died Jan. 27 morning after the car she was driving slid into the path on an oncoming pickup truck on Highway 75 near Eagle Lake in Southwestern Racine County. Cassandra Pokorny, a 2012 graduate of Waterford Union High School, was taken to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington where she was pronounced dead following the crash in the Town of Dover. Speed and slippery road conditions are listed as contributing factors in the head-on crash, according to a press release issued Racine County Sheriff’s office. Pokorny was driving a

Toyota Prius south on Highway 75 near McNamara Road in the Town of Dover about 5:30 a.m. when the crash occurred. According to sheriff’s officials, the car driven by the Pokorny began to fishtail in snowy conditions and crossed the centerline into the path of the northbound GMC pickup truck. A caller advised a sheriff’s dispatcher that the crash partially ejected Pokorny from the vehicle and she did not appear to be breathing, the release said. Rescue workers performed CPR before Pokorny was transported to the hospital, according to the release. Shortly after the crash

the pickup truck caught on fire, but the blaze was extinguished by firefighters from Kansasville and Union Grove, the release said. The driver of the pickup was a 48-year-old man from the Kansasville area, said Sheriff’s Lt. David Kinservik, who declined to release his name. He did not suffer significant injuries and was examined at the scene by rescue personnel before being released, Kinservik said. Deputies on scene reported that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. The investigation into the crash was continuing as of Wednesday morning, Kinservik said.

hen Toni Piccolo graduated from Burlington High School in 1981, she had an idea of what she wanted to do for a living. She went to what was then Sentry, applied with owner Bob Winkler – and went to work in the floral department. From there, Piccolo has grown. More than 20 years of working at Sentry, a horticulture marketing degree from Gateway Technical College and her own business later, Piccolo has reached what she considers the ultimate honor in her business. In July, she will be inducted into the American Institute of Floral Design in Colorado Springs. “It’s been my dream ever since I decided to be a florist,” Piccolo explained. In order to be accepted, Piccolo needed to pass a written and practical exam in Chicago last June, and then gather three recommendations from instituteaccredited members. Praise for Piccolo included Denise Gehrke of Waukesha Floral

– another long-time workplace for the Burlington resident. “I can’t wait to see where she goes with her AIFD membership,” Gehrke wrote. “Toni is extremely talented and very detail oriented with her design work.”

What she calls home

Piccolo has changed venues over the last 10 or so years. She worked at Sentry until 2004 before pursuing her associate’s degree at Gateway, and after she received it, she came back to Burlington to open her own store. Gia Bella Flowers and Gifts is on “The Loop” in Burlington, the product of the hard work of Piccolo and business partner Laura Proctor. “It was time,” Piccolo said of opening her own business. The partnership with Proctor made sense as well. “Her business sense and my creativity,” Piccolo said about making the partnership work. Proctor retired in December, and since then Piccolo has made it a practice to never turn away business and she’s been busy. “This is not an easy job,” she admitted. “You have to be

About the American Institute of Floral Designers The mission of the American Institute of Floral Designers is to advance the art of professional floral design through education, service and leadership, and to recognize the achievement of excellence in this art form. Established in 1965, the institute is the floral industry’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to establishing, maintaining and recognizing the highest standard of professional floral design. The institute and its worldwide accredited members are in the forefront of the industry in presenting educational design programs and in designing flowers for such renowned events as the Tournament of Roses Parade, Academy Awards and Presidential Inaugurations. They are an extraordinary group of talented artists. Accredited membership in the institute is selective and can be obtained only after a candidate has demonstrated advanced professional ability of his or her floral artistry. Members wear the “AIFD” addendum on their name to demonstrate that their peers have found them to be “Accredited in Floral Design.” They must continue to demonstrate their “cutting edge” art by meeting specified continuing education requirements. Each July, the institute presents its national symposium. Considered to be the most important design education event in the floral industry, this dynamic conclave attracts designers, educators and interested individuals from all corners of the world. very dedicated, and committed – when you’re a business owner in general. “But this industry … you’re dealing with a lot of emotion,” she continued. “You’re dealing with sympathy, which is sad, and weddings, which are happy. “And it’s a very physical job, very practical exam, along with about 150 floral designers from all over the world. “It’s very intense,” said Piccolo, who added the institute is like the “Academy Awards of floral design.” The written exam involved skills and elements of design, and comprised half of her score. The other half? Five floral designs, which covered everything from a wedding bouquet to flowers to wear to a duplication of a design from a photograph. “If you ever thought that would be easy? It’s not,” Piccolo said of the duplication. All the designs were then put on display after being judges on focal emphasis, line, color, balance, depth and creativity – just to name a few. Piccolo received praise from her fellow designers, but still had to wait more than a month to see

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, FEB. 4, 2015 • 11 if she’d passed the testing process. She then needed to pull together the three recommendations and biographical information. She can’t wait now for the induction ceremonies in July, and for the doors the accreditation will open.

“It will open doors, and it already has,” she said, adding she can teach peers and “be an educator, really, in my field.”

Simply named

All this from a simple start – and a business with a simple

name. Gia Bella is named, in part, for Piccolo’s daughter, Gianna. “And ‘bella’ is beautiful,” she added. She wanted something simple and traditional. “The name was important to me, and I wanted it to reflect my daughter,” Piccolo pointed out.

Big game, bigger commercials It’s the time of year when the term “F-word” takes on a whole new meaning. Especially if, like me, you reside in a home with a bunch of football fanatics. For most of the season, their fervor doesn’t impact me. I leave them to their games on the big screen (with booming surround sound) and find myself a nice crime or home improvement show on the small TV upstairs. (Or maybe take a nap.) Please don’t tackle me. I’m sorry. I can’t help the candor – or the bad jokes. There are just too many games, too many quarterbacks and too many team balls to keep straight during the regular season. I prefer a simpler approach, which involves watching and paying attention to pro football once the really good commercials start airing – a couple of weeks
