There is no doubt that Christmas is the “most wonderful time of the year” as the popular Christmas song reminds us. While we deal with the hustle and bustle of preparing for the seasonal festivities, it is perhaps a good time to step back into the holiday traditions of the 19th Century. To take a walk into the past, visit the Durkee Mansion at the Kemper Center. Each year with the help of many volunteers some of whom are professional floral designers, the Durkee Mansion comes to life as it may have looked during the Christmas holiday season years ago. Coming to the Kemper Center Durkee House during the holiday season is a wonderful way to feel as if you were transported back in time and to experience the lavish decorations through-

oriented employer that locates here, our region’s economic stability and quality of life are enhanced,” Pleasant Prairie Village President John Steinbrink said. “We are incredibly pleased to welcome the FNA Group. We thank them for choosing Pleasant Prairie, and we’re excited for them to become part of our business community.” The FNA Group will relocate part of its OEM Industries Division operations, which manufactures hoses and distributes pumps and replacement parts, from an existing facility in Arkansas to Pleasant Prairie. Company officials said they selected Wisconsin after taking part in a site selection process that involved numerous states. The company plans to create more than 100 full-time jobs in early 2015 in addition to providing seasonal employment opportunities. Additional job creation is expected in the future based on demand for the compa-

ny’s products. “We are excited for the opportunity to expand the operations of our OEM Industries Division to accommodate continued growth and demand within our customer base for high-pressure cleaning solutions, OEM parts, and high-pressure hoses,” said Gus Alexander, founder, CEO and president of FNA Group. “Likewise, this allows us to free up manufacturing space we desperately need in our existing manufacturing facility in Arkansas, he added. “Now we’ll be able to accommodate our immediate and growing demand for more and better high pressure power washers for our consumer and industrial customers.” The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is supporting the company’s efforts by authorizing up to $700,000 in state tax credits over the next three years. Local Scout completes butterfly garden for Salem By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Evan Kirsch had to complete a community service project to become an Eagle Scout – and he took the advice of Salem resident and town employee Judy Grasser. “I contacted his troop and suggested a monarch way station if anyone had a project,” Judy said. “And Evan called and we got started.” The garden was completed last summer and hopefully will begin attracting the popular butterflies. The Salem Town Board agreed to donate one acre of land at the Salem Community Park, located on 259th Ave. It is near the passive portion of the park and close to Center Lake. A source of water is essential for a monarch way station. Plants in the garden include various types of milkweed, goldenrod, spiderwort, blazing star and coneflower. All butterflies require two types of plants – a host plant where eggs are laid so that the caterpillar has a food source when it hatches and nectar flowers that provide

food for the newly emerged butterfly. Kirsch said he has always loved science and the outdoors and said, “I really don’t know what I am going to do, I really love math and science, but engineering seems pretty boring. I have thought about being a microbiologist, and that is definitely one of my top options.” One of the main things Kirsch said he learned was that teamwork with good communication gets things done. “A lot of my information came from Mrs. Grasser,” Kirsch said. “She was a huge help in completing the project.” Kirsch said he purchased many of his seeds through a seed company (Shooting Star Native Seed) that specializes in prairie restoration. This company began in 1989 and is based in based in Spring Grove, Minnesota. Native species are important to butterflies and Shooting Star grows, cultivates and sells seeds and plants to a seven-state area in the Midwest.

The Monarch Watch Orley B. “Chip” Taylor, a professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Kansas, is the founder and director of “Monarch Watch.” When he realized that the monarch was in trouble because of habitat loss in the 1990’s, he began this effort to create new habitats for the butterfly. Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the United States and Canada to areas in Mexico and California to wait out the winter. Increasing development and the used of herbicides on croplands, pastures and roadsides are causing a decline in milkweed and other nectar producing flowers that monarchs need to support their migration and general survival. According to www.monrachwatch.org, some states have started to increase the diversity of plantings along roadsides, including milkweeds but these programs are small. SUBMITTED PHOTOS Hi-Liter

Many things to be thankful for Do you ever take a moment to count your blessings? Every day I encounter people who are enduring hardship. Most people we know will never have to face the challenges I see our fellow creations bear. As you gathered with your family and friends on Thanksgiving, I hope you took time out to reflect on the blessings in your own life. Here are a few of the blessings I counted this Thanksgiving. Health: These past weeks were filled with visits and assistance given to many of our fellow Americans struggling due to disability or illness. Car accidents, falls, surgeries, infections, birth defects, cancer, immune disorders…at times the list seems endless. I have seen the affects of these health problems on many. What can make these feel even worse? Not being able to pay for your rent, food, utilities and daily necessities while you are struggling with your health. One-hundred percent of your donations are being used to remove the stress and pains of poverty. Those pains of poverty are made worse while undergoing an illness or disability. You have removed these pains

Shelter: There is nothing to have safe shelter. Family: While many that can prepare you for the sight of a family living in a of us complain about our families and have petty minivan or car, belongings piled wherever they will fit. arguments with family Bags of personal items and members at the holiday clothing stuffed on the floor table, there are many that have no one to spend the and the look in the eyes of holiday with. They are so grateful to have a volunteer check on them, just to have a few minutes of conversation with some one who cares. Those of us that are blessed to have family should take a moment to let them know we love them and care about them. When your family is sitting around the Thanksgiving table look at each one of them and imagine life without them. That is the reality for many we have helped. I will be counting my family as one of my many blessings. Food: This blessing seems so obvious this time of year as some of us look upon a bountiful table laden with turkey and many side dishes, pies and desserts. For many American families, senior citizens, the handicapped and working poor this blessing will be a luxury. Our food pantries and several local groups are working hard to make sure people in our communities will have a Thanksgiving dinner to enjoy. All of us together are making the blessing of food possible for many in our communities every day, all year long. I have walked in to far too many homes to find empty cupboards and refrigerators. I have seen hungry children, parents and grandparents. All ages are affected by hunger in our great country. Thanks to all of you, this hunger has been eased for thousands of people in our communities. I will be counting food as one of my many blessings.

Even if you are struggling with some kind of hardship in your life, I know there are at least a few things you can still count as a blessing. I have seen children cry grateful tears over their own pillow and blanket. I have had people who have been through terrible tragedies tell me they are blessed to be alive. What will you count as your blessing? We promise to continue our good works, our mission of caring and sharing, removing the pains of poverty for as many as donations allow in our communities. Thank you and God bless you. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: There are many coming to us in desperation. Our good fellow creations need our compassion. Together we make a big difference. Make checks payable to The Time Is Now to Help, P.O. Box 1, Lake Geneva, WI 53147. The Time Is Now to Help is a federally recognized 501(c)3 charitable organization licensed in Wisconsin and Illinois. The investigation so far has revealed that Knight was out with friends the evening of Nov. 26 and the early morning hours of Nov. 27. Knight was at a friend’s residence. A witness indicated that between 7:30 and 8 a.m., he observed Knight sleeping on the floor. At about 10:08

Alice in Dairyland candidates sought Wanted: A communications professional who is willing to help Wisconsin residents make meaningful connections with Wisconsin agriculture. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is accepting applications for the 68th Alice in Dairyland, Wisconsin’s official agricultural ambassador. Application materials are due Monday, Jan. 5. “Applying for the position of Wisconsin’s 67th Alice in Dairyland is one

of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” said 67th Alice in Dairyland Zoey Brooks. “Serving as Wisconsin’s Agricultural Ambassador has allowed me to share the story of our state’s $88 billion agriculture industry in a multitude of ways to diverse audiences across the state and has broadened my view and deepened my appreciation for the industry.” Alice in Dairyland is responsible for educating rural and urban audiences about the importance of

Wisconsin’s agriculture. She does so through interviews with television, radio and print publications; public speeches; industry tours and more. She must be able to develop and execute marketing plans, deliver classroom presentations and network with industry professionals. She must learn and retain information about the diversity of Wisconsin agriculture and be able to tailor that information for diverse audiences. Alice in Dairyland ap-

plicants should have considerable knowledge or work experience with Wisconsin agriculture; at least three years of experience, education or training in communications, marketing or public relations; public speaking experience and a willingness to attend an extensive number of work-related events on evenings and weekends. Applicants must be female, Wisconsin residents and at least 21 years old. “If you have a passion for agriculture, education,

and communications, this position is a great opportunity to take those passions to the next level and to make long lasting career connections in the industry,” Brooks said. This one-year, full-time contractual position starts June 1. The Alice program is headquartered in Madison and travels extensively throughout the state. The annual salary for Alice in Dairyland is $40,000. This position includes holiday, vacation and sick leave as well as

use of a vehicle for official business. Reimbursement is provided for an individual health insurance premium up to $450 a month, as well as professional travel expenses. To begin the application process, submit a cover letter, resume, three professional references and summary of qualifications to DATCP by 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015. Application materials are available at http://datcp. wi.gov/Business/Alice_in_ Dairyland/Recruitment.

Christmas tree is tucked alongside the stairway but this beautiful sight is only a teaser for what will greet visitors elsewhere in the home. The front parlor is a work of art. A tall, perfectly shaped Christmas tree, decorated with tiny white lights, beaded garland and acorns gently frosted, stands between two windows. Simple, blue, round ornaments are added to the tree giving it a shine as the lights reflect off of them. But the tree is but one small part of the room’s decoration. The fireplace mantel is dressed in boughs of evergreens while a lighted wreath is hung above the mantel. It is easy to imagine snuggling up in front of the fire and listening to Christmas carols, perhaps played by a family member on the pianoforte in the room. Each room of the house is

lavishly decorated. The dining room is set for tea with trays of sweets ready for the family’s visitors and, of course, a tree is found there as in every room. But don’t think the most lavish of the decorations are found on the first floor. The upstairs bedrooms are equally decorated with trees, swags and wreaths. Even the headboards of the beds have the look of Christmas. A visit to the Durkee Mansion will leave visitors full of holiday spirit and full of decorating ideas. The mansion is open to the public Dec. 8 to 14, Dec. 19 to 21, and Dec. 27 and 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free but donations are accepted. The Durkee Mansion is at 6501 3rd Avenue, Kenosha, on the web at www.kempercenter.com or by phone at (262) 657-6005.

Left: The lavishly decorated Christmas tree is the centerpiece of the main parlor. It is adorned with blue glass balls, beaded garlands and soft white lights. Bottom left: No space in the Durkee Mansion is left undecorated. Even the headboard of this bed is covered with evergreens. Bottom right: Just as gifts are important to share with family and friends today, gifts were exchanged back in the 19th Century. PHOTOS BY: SANDRA LANDEN MACHAJ Hi-Liter

The Kenosha Sand Dunes, a part of the Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area is located along the shore of Lake Michigan. This land was donated to the State of Wisconsin in memory of Clifford Messenger, one of Wisconsin’s great conservation leaders.

Premium Outlets is the major retailing center in Pleasant Prairie. With a large variety of stores, it attracts shoppers from nearby Wisconsin communities and from Illinois.

Pleasant Prairie is so much more than an outlet mall Community has a rich history dating to mid-1800s

By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

The Village of Pleasant Prairie is probably best known to those of us who do not live in the community as the place to go for outlet mall shopping. Driving north on Interstate 94 from Illinois or south from Milwaukee, the sight of the large Pleasant Prairie water tower reminds travelers they have reached their destination. While the mall is the destination for many of these travelers, the Village of Pleasant Prairie is a destination of its own. Area history The area that makes up today’s Pleasant Prairie was inhabited by local Indian tribes long before the immigrants, originally from Europe via the eastern coast of the United States, made their way to the area. The area was a common Native American campsite along the shore of Lake Michigan and it is here that many archeological sites are located. Some of these sites have been described as among the best quality in the country. Settlers arrived in the area beginning in 1833 many traveling along the Jambeau Trail a route that continues to be popular today although it is now known as Green Bay Road. Horace Woodbridge is considered the first settler to arrive here on June 4, 1833, but he was quickly joined by Henry Miller later that month. The area remained an agricultural community and did not organize into an official governmental unit until April 1842 when the first town meeting was held. With the election of the first town officials the community became organized and Pleasant Prairie was born. The town officials met in the Williams Congregational Church, which was at Green Bay Road and 93rd Street. The church in subsequent years became the official Town Hall for this community.

1875, was often called Tar Corners because of an incident that occurred there. It is said that a thief was once tarred and feathered here as punishment for his crime. The growth of Pleasant Prairie was originally somewhat slow. By the early 1900s the population of Pleasant Prairie was 700 persons. The DuPont munitions plant had made its home in the community, which provided employment for many but was not thought of as an ideal addition to the community. Kenosha County residents presented a lawsuit to close the plant because of its danger to the members of the community. DuPont won the suit but its success was short lived. In 1911 an explosion brought the plant down and destroyed most of the homes in the area and for miles around. Despite the devastation there was only one death although there were many injuries. The community again began to grow with the development of neighborhoods. Nine separate areas were thought to be the original areas from which growth would develop. These included Carol Beach, along the shores of Lake Michigan, Raney originally known as Rogers Siding, Dexter’s Corner, and Tobin were among the early settlements that would become Pleasant Prairie.

Losing to Kenosha The town was originally determined to be almost 42 square miles covering an area from the Illinois border to the south and to the boundaries of the City of Kenosha on the north. But this size was not maintained as the larger and more powerful Kenosha began to annex land into its municipality. Pleasant Prairie struggled to maintain its independent status from Kenosha but was not always successful. Still striving to grow, the town hall moved from the An infamous name Williams CongregationPleasant Prairie, before al Church to rented office

space near 22nd Avenue and 91st Street in 1961. Outgrowing the office space that it rented in 1961, a decision was made to construct new space for the town government. This space was completed in 1967 and the town government took its place in the new municipal building on Springbrook Road and 39th Avenue. In addition to office space the building provided an auditorium. The fire department was also located there with room for sleeping quarters for the men and an apparatus room. In 1989, Pleasant Prairie was incorporated as a village with more than 3,000 residents in favor and only 300 against the change in governmental form. While the municipal facilities have remained in use, today there is a big expansion of the Village Hall building. The fire department, which has shared facilities with the village officials, is now going to have its own building behind Village Hall. The Pleasant Prairie Police Department and the Public Works Department are housed in the Pleasant Prairie Roger Prange Municipal Center on Green Bay Road (Highway 31). Over the years the Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie boundaries have changed usually to the benefit of the larger Kenosha. In 1984 an agreement was made between Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie to allow some of the bordering residents to annex into Kenosha. Kenosha also received the right to annex lands north of Highway 50 from Green Bay Road to I-94, which contained the areas of a shopping Plaza, White Caps Subdivision and the Aurora Hospital. Pleasant Prairie in return maintained its independent status as a community and protected its remaining land, but did become part of the Kenosha Unified School District. This allowed students to benefit from the advantages of a larger school district. Pleasant Prairie also

The village has a good balance of industry, private homes and is known for its significant wetland area. The Chiwaukee Prairie and the Kenosha Sand Dunes are protected here by the Village of Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, the State of Wisconsin and the Army Corps of Engineers assuring that these lands will remain protected.
