Going medieval in modern times Renaissance Faire offers immersion in historical fun
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
In the year 1574, the Port of Bristol is astir with excitement at the impending visit of Queen Elizabeth I, her Royal Highness, and ruler of the kingdom. Repairs were made throughout the city and new paint on the buildings, allowed the city to shine. Everyone was busy. The women of the community visited their favorite seamstress to order lovely new gowns befitting a visit from the queen. This was followed by a visit to their favorite jeweler to pick the jewels, which would make their outfit exquisitely unique. The knights polished their armor and were certain that their horses were appropriately groomed to make them spectacular as they participate in the jousting tournament. On a warm, sunny Saturday morning, we entered the Bristol Renaissance Faire along with many other visitors and immediately joined the spirit of the 1500s. Surprising to me was that not only were the cast members dressed in the style of 1574, but also many of the visitors came dressed for the times. We were met by Julie McMillin, publicity and social media director for the faire dressed as all members of the faire in her period dress. After greeting us warmly in her English accent, she shared some information about the dress of the day.
“Women of the time were required to wear a hat while in public and their gowns were long enough to cover their ankles. You can only see the tips of the toes on their shoes – no ankles can be seen, ” she said. As she led us through the city, back towards the jousting arena, she recounted the history of the faire. It began in 1972 when Richard and Bonnie Shapiro founded a four-weekend event known as King Richard’s Faire based on a fictional King Richard. It did incorporate a generically historic view of life in the medieval times. Through the 1970s and 1980s the faire added fantasy-based elements that included trolls, elves and wizard battles. The Renaissance Entertainment Corporation purchased the faire from the Shapiros in 1989 and moved it across the Illinois-Wisconsin border to Bristol. Changes were made including replacing the mythical monarch with Elizabeth I of England, producing more authentic costumes to represent the time which was then set as 1574. Overall the Faire became more historically correct. Feast for the eyes Wandering through the Faire, there is much to attract both the eye and ear. Musical parades meander through the

Dressed in their medieval finery, this couple spends a recent afternoon meandering through the fictional 1554 community at the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha County. The faire is open weekends through Labor Day.

Tenderhearted tough guys – and Chippy I was all set to write this week’s column about an incident that happened yesterday when I was cleaning lettuce from the garden and came across a lovely green caterpillar. The creature wriggled in the sink, stretching upward, trying to find a foothold for its escape. I called my son’s attention to “Greenie,” and he plucked the critter from the sink and headed toward the back door to put the little guy outside. “Don’t put him anywhere near the lettuce,” I said. I was all set to write about a day earlier this summer when my husband and I found two baby squirrels dead in the middle of the road

near our driveway and he got a shovel and dug a hole and we buried them in our backyard. I was all set to write about caterpillars and squirrels and a few more of my family’s critter-related habits when our cat let out a low, guttural meow in the dining room. Instinctively, I got up and stood on my chair. When my son (in the family room)
bolted from the couch toward the cat and exclaimed, “Oh my goodness!” I knew my initial analysis of the situation had been correct. We had a crisis on our hands. When my cat lets out a deep, raspy meow, it’s because he is announcing, with pride, that he’s brought home a trophy. After years of cat ownership (or more correctly, being owned by cats) I’ve learned a cat’s trophy is often alive. Hence my perch on the chair. “It’s a chipmunk!” My son announced. “And it’s alive!” A chipmunk in the dining room. Things could have been worse. Once it was a snake. A live chipmunk meant one thing. I jumped down
from the chair knowing we were now in rescue mode. I grabbed the cat and ran upstairs to put him in the bedroom while my son stood guard over the chipmunk. With the cat safely out of the way, I returned to the scene of the crime. Chippy (we gave him a nickname) sat rigid under the table, undoubtedly scared out of his little chipmunk mind. Our plight was further complicated by the piano – an old and heavy upright – also in the dining room. If Chippy ran under it, we were in trouble. It was clear we needed reinforcements. I went to get a big brother. The two boys and I surrounded the table, assessing our options. One
son stood in front of the piano, blocking access. The other held a plastic cake cover. In one deft movement the cake cover became a chipmunk cover. We had the little guy secured. Next we slid a large book under the cake cover to create a floor for Chippy and we carried him out to the backyard. “Run free, little Chippy. Run free.” After a moment’s hesitation, he did. And we returned to the house. Back to the everyday routine of normalcy that makes up our lives. We let the cat out of the bedroom and he is strutting around like a 14-year old declawed chipmunk stalker who still considers himself
boss of the neighborhood. His tail is riding high. He is confined to the house for a while, to give Chippy a chance to recoup and recover, but the cat doesn’t much care. He knows how awesomely great he is. Some days I think I live with too many rough and rowdy guys – and I’m not referring to the cat. Today wasn’t one of them. Today we saved a chipmunk’s life. In the scheme of things that’s something. At least around here it is. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. Two men found Thousands flock to Country Thunder dead in Bristol plane crash Two men were found deceased in a missing plane that had crashed sometime July 25 or 26, according to information released by the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department. The identities of the men, who were believed to be from out of state, were pending release by the Federal Aviation Administration. No other injuries or property damage was reported. The plane had crashed in a grassy field hundreds of yards south of a residence on 60th street,
Bristol, in Kenosha County. The aircraft, a Zenith CH601XL airplane, was reported missing Sunday morning and was reportedly en route to the Annual Experimental Aircraft Association Air Show in Oshkosh. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting a full investigation on the plane crash to determine the cause and identities of the deceased individuals.
Survivors of Suicide support group set The Survivors of Suicide Support group will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Piasecki Althaus Family Services Center located at 2002 52nd St. in Kenosha. The groups are facilitated by a certified grief and loss coach, Charlie Hansen. The meeting dates are as follows: • Aug. 11 and 25 • Sept. 8 and 22 • Oct. 13 and 27 • Nov. 10 and 24 Here are some topics that will be covered: • Why did this happen? Why didn’t I know? • Sorting out all those feelings of guilt, anger, being ashamed - how to cope. • How to remember your loved one by how they lived, not only how they died. • Healing your hurt by sharing your story with others. • Everyone’s grief is not the same, nor does healing
happen at the same time. • Overcoming the stigma of suicide. What to say to friends, family and co-workers. Each year over 41,000 people die by suicide in the U.S. and over one million die worldwide. Kenosha County has lost more than 350 people to suicide since 2000 and every one of the deaths is survived by loved ones and friends. A survivor is defined as a family member or friend of a person who died by suicide. For some survivors, this support group will be the first time they will share the grief, reach out for support and support others. The important thing for survivors to know is they are not alone. For more information or to register, call Debbie Rueber at the Kenosha County Division of Health at (262) 605-6722, (800) 472-8008 or e-mail debbie.rueber@kenoshacounty. org.

Angels help alleviate pains of poverty SAL DIMICELI Columnist
In the book, Hodkiewicz often mentions the angels that came forward to help him and his family during this time. Some were obvious, others were anonymous, and all were very much a blessing in their lives. We feel that way about many of you. Many of you we have never met, but we feel your faith and support of our mission. Many of you are anonymous and we do not even know your name to thank

You have been so generous in our mission to alleviate poverty this summer. We will not disappoint you and your faith in our organization. worn, tattered beds. Another working poor family was given assistance with utilities and groceries as the mother has been ill and cannot return to work until late August. How would they have gotten through this time without our help? They were barely getting by paycheck to paycheck before this illness. Fox Charities is another friend and angel to The Time Is Now to Help. They appear several times a year, always when we are most in need, just like angels. We are so blessed to have their support and inspiration through their matching grants. Paul Ziegler is another angel and friend. He quietly comes forward and asks to help those in need. He sheds real tears for those we help. His heart is moved by the plight of the poverty stricken, especially the senior citizens who struggle all alone. This week we received several letters that are so near and dear to our hearts. The first is from the Nottestad family and Neisen children who held a cookie and juice stand to benefit The Time Is Now to Help. It was accompanied by a photo of the children with their stand and a note written by one of the children stating: “Here is a check for $81.75. We raised this money by having a cookie and juice stand. We want to donate it for the people who are poor and everything else you guys do to help people in need.” Thank you, Nottestad family and Neisen children. You are angels to The Time Is Now to Help. The next letter had Sal and all of us here in tears. It came from another angel of The Time Is Now to Help, the Barnabas donors. Here is the announcement they had to make: Dear Sal: Thank you very much for forwarding a copy of the newspaper, outlining the marvelous results of the Barnabas matching grant fund. It is a blessing to us that so many of your supporters share our concern about all the hurting people that somehow seem to fall thru the cracks in today’s economy. With that in mind, we are making an additional Barnabas matching grant fund in the amount of $61,000 to assist you in helping those at this difficult time in their lives. We looked at each other, not believing what we were reading. Would we be blessed with another matching grant by
our dear friends the Barnabas donors? Would this matching grant be even bigger than the last matching grant, our largest matching grant ever? We knew for sure that the Barnabas donors were not only our angels but angels to all those in desperate need that will be touched by this matching grant. They, along with all of you our matching donors, will be the angels that prevent a senior citizen from living without air-conditioning, a single mother and children from homelessness, a fellow creation with a disability or illness from doing without food and toiletries…. All this assistance is possible thanks to all of you, our angels. A note of thanks arrived just yesterday. It was from a medically retired veteran and his family recently helped with rent and utilities. They were soon to be evicted with two children. Their note read: “Thank you so much for helping my family. I have never been speechless in my life but this stopped me in my tracks. You are an angel. Peace and God bless.” Did I just read that right? I had been reading about angels in Hodkiewicz’s book, noticing the angels all around me and The Time Is Now to Help. Are we angels to those in need? I think this note was a message perfectly timed to remind me of the importance of our work for the poverty stricken. I can be strong for God and continue on with what he wants me to do with my life. I thank God everyday that I have all of you, our angels beside us in this mission to alleviate the pains of poverty for our fellow creations in need. Thank you and God bless you for helping. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: There are many coming to us in desperation. Our good fellow creations need our compassion. Together we make a big difference. Make checks payable to The Time Is Now to Help, P.O. Box 1, Lake Geneva, WI 53147. The Time Is Now to Help is a federally recognized 501(c)3 charitable organization licensed in Wisconsin and Illinois. You will receive a tax deductible, itemized thank you receipt showing how your donation provided assistance for the poverty stricken. Please visit: www. timeisnowtohelp.org

Many of us here at The Time Is Now to Help have been engrossed in reading a book written by our friend and veterinarian who has helped many of our poverty stricken clients receive much needed veterinary care for their pets. The book is called “Getting to Heaven by Going Through Hell” written by Dr. Scot Hodkiewicz. Hodkiewicz wrote the book after going through his own very personal trials after a horrific car accident that nearly took his own and his family’s lives. The book will help you to learn to forgive and see what is important in your life and help you to find your own heaven.

Lutheran Social Services, with Immanuel Lutheran Church as the sponsor, helped the family get to Lake Geneva nearly nine years ago. Po Po said learning English was a challenge for the entire family and homework was difficult for Nee Dow. She said it was difficult learning how to pay bills and how to talk to teachers and doctors without knowing English. Despite the challenges, Too worked hard to succeed with the help of teachers and friends, Po Po said. “I see Nee Dow’s greatest successes as graduating from high school, becoming a United States citizen, and finishing his first year at Shepherd’s College,” Carey said. “The Lake Geneva School District has been absolutely wonderful for Nee Dow,” Carey said. “His teachers and the administration have helped him in so many ways. I cannot speak highly enough about the district and the teachers.” “Nee Dow is learning many things from school to take care of himself in the future,” Po Po said. “Shepherd’s College has been a perfect fit for Nee Dow,” Carey said. “This past year he has grown in
Salem teachers union asks for benefits back
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
In early June prior to the state budget being set and approved in Madison, the Salem Grade School Board made some changes to health and dental insurance for the staff. Now that the numbers are in and the state did not lower the per-pupil state aid by $75 but kept the amount the same, President of the Salem Teachers Union, Jan Fahey, asked recently that the board reinstate benefits to what they were last year. At a June 3 meeting, the board approved certain increases in what employees pay for health and dental insurance, claiming the issue of money can be revisited at a later date with the ability to defray costs if possible. Increases approved at the June 3 meeting were that staff pay 15 percent of the premiums for health and dental insurance. They previously have paid nothing for dental premiums and last year they paid 12.5 percent of the health insurance premium. The increase could mean an additional annual cost of $72 for dental and $73 for health for singles. The additional cost for the
family plan would be $188 for dental and $168 for health. District Administrator Dave Milz does expect that the board will revisit the topic at a later board meeting. “Its good that the state didn’t take away $75 per student in state aid, but we won’t know just what our revenues will be until the October annual meeting,” Milz said. “We are not sure what the levy will be.” Milz said expenses the school district faces rise at a greater rate than the revenue received to pay those increases. “It’s the same problem that all districts have,” he said.

Former Lake Geneva Badger student Nee Dow Too has battled through much in his short life. He escaped Burma as it was torn apart by political unrest, fleeing to a refugee camp in Thailand and eventually making it to the United States, all at the age of 3. Today Too is fighting again, this time for the opportunity to complete a college education and attain a degree in horticulture. A fundraiser will be held at Badger High School on Friday to help Too achieve that goal. In 1997, Too and his parents were forced to leave their home in Burma because of government unrest, said family friend Lisa Carey. They ended up in Thailand but were refused admittance to a refugee camp for more than a month because it was already full. The family stayed in the jungle just outside the camp until space was available, Carey said. Because the family was living in the jungle with no medical care or protection from insects, Too contracted malaria and fell into a coma. Too eventually emerged from the coma but did not walk for a week or speak for a month. The malaria had caused some damage to Too’s brain functions. Sponsored by Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva, the Too family finally made it to the United States where Too was diagnosed with a cognitive disability. Despite that, Too worked hard to learn English and attend school in a foreign country. Too attained citizenship in 2013 and graduated from Badger High School in 2014. This year, Too has been attending Shepherd’s College in Union Grove, IN TWIN LAKES, WI a school for students with cognitive Daily/Weekly Rates disabilities.
