Districts create living time capsules

Kenosha has four historical areas designated by national register By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Historic districts are found throughout the country in towns and cities that respect their history. They are composed of a collection of buildings, properties or sites that have been designated as historically or architecturally significant to the community’s development. While most communities have one historical district, Kenosha has had four such districts designated and each has received the National Register of Historic Places designation. The best way to appreciate these areas that have been so significant in the development of the city, is to walk through them, looking at the architecture and imagining what life was like for Kenosha residents who lived here in the early days of the community’s development. Third Avenue District The Third Avenue Historic District is the showplace of high-end homes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This district is along Third Avenue primarily between 51st Street and 60th Street, on land originally owned by Charles Durkee. The district is bounded by Lake Michigan on the east. The movers and shakers of Kenosha built ele-

Many of these homes were designed by the popular architects, including Max Dunning, Richard Philip, and Pond and Pond of Chicago. The homes reflected the popular styles of the day including the Tudor Revival, Georgian Revival, and the Queen Anne Colonial Revival styles. Most of the homes have been well maintained giving the street the same appearance it had in the 1900s, except for the presence of so many automobiles. A walk down Third Avenue is a walk into an area of Kenosha as it was in the 1900s. Imagine taking an evening stroll and stopping to chat with neighbors – the Charles Jeffrey and Charles Nash families of the automobile industry, Charles Durkee, businessman and frequent legislator for the area, James Anderson of the American Brass Company, and many other political and business figures of the time. The Episcopal Girls School opened on the Durkee property in 1874 when Durkee left the area to become governor of the Utah Territory. The school, known as Kemper Hall, was the leading private

This Queen Anne style home, located in the Library Park Historic District, was the original home of Urban Lewis, a businessman. Since 1920 the home has served as the Hansen-Lendman Funeral Home.

Educational series offered to family caregivers Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six-week educational series designed to provide you with the tools you need to take care of yourself. This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings better, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. Classes will be held at Hospice Alliance, 10220 Prairie Ridge Blvd., Pleasant Prairie from 9:30 to

11:30 a.m. every Wednesday from Aug. 5 to Sept. 9. A suggested donation of $10 is asked to help cover the cost of materials. Class size is limited and registration is required by Friday, July 31. For more information or to register, contact the Aging and Disability Resource Center at (262) 605-6646 or (800) 472-8008. Online registration is now available on the ADRC’s website at: adrc. kenoshacounty.org. Look for the red registration button.

New clinic for breast cancer patients opens in Kenosha Aurora Health Care added services to its clinic at 6811 118th Ave. with the establishment of a multidisciplinary cancer clinic for breast cancer patients on July 22. The breast cancer clinic will follow new standards in cancer care that make treatment more convenient and efficient for the patient. The clinic will offer the following services for patients: • Patients will meet with all of their physicians at the same appointment. • Each patient is assigned a Cancer Nurse Navigator. These

nurses are the patients’ personal guides throughout the treatment process. • All necessary testing is coordinated by a Cancer Nurse Navigator before the first visit to the clinic. This ensures a smooth transition from diagnosis to treatment. “For someone diagnosed with breast cancer, it can seem like they’re given an endless list of physicians and appointments,” Dr. Sana Jeffreys, on-

Discover the

cologist at Aurora Health Center in Kenosha, said. “The new Aurora breast multidisciplinary cancer clinic brings together all of the patient’s physicians into one place which helps eliminate the need for extra appointments and communication breakdowns between all of the different practices.” “Cancer Nurse Navigators play a key role in our patient’s cancer care,” Jamie Cairo, nurse practitioner and director

of cancer integration for Aurora Health Care, said. “Cancer Nurse Navigators are personal advocates for the patients and are there to help answer any questions throughout the patient’s entire journey.” The Aurora breast multidisciplinary cancer clinic has already begun accepting new patients, male or female. Library Park District A short distance to the north and west is the Library Park Historic District. Library Park itself is bounded by Seventh and Eighth avenues on the east and west and 59th Place and 61st Street on the north and south. The park was originally designed as a commons area much like those found in the eastern cities. The land was donated by Charles Durkee, who was a New Englander, and George Kimball a Canadian. The housing that developed along the perimeter of the commons is much more eclectic than what was seen on Third Avenue. Development began in the 1840s with small to modest sized homes built around the park. As building continued the homes become larger and more elaborate. In the 1870s two churches were built in the Gothic Revival Style to meet the religious needs of the community. These were St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on Seventh Avenue and the First Congregational Church on Eighth Avenue. The most important building in this district is the Gilbert M. Simmons Memorial Library designed by Daniel Burnham in the neo-classical style. The library built in the City Park in 1900 resulted in a change of name for the park from City Park to Library Park. Civic Center District The Civic Center District presents a very different view of the city. This area is the legislative heart of the city and is easily recognizable with its massive neo-classical

architecture. Stretching from Eighth Avenue on the east and extending west almost to 11th Avenue, it is bounded on the south by 58th Street and on the north by 55th Street. This district was the result of cooperation between the City of Kenosha, Kenosha County and the State of Wisconsin in an effort to unify and beautify the downtown section of the city. Harland Bartholomew, a well-known city planner of the 1900s was chosen to submit a plan. Within 10 years the four sides of the Civic Center were completed. The buildings include the Kenosha County courthouse and jail, the old Kenosha High School, which covers an entire city block, the current post office and the original post office, now used as the Dinosaur Museum. The Civic Center Park, like Library Park, has a common central area filled with flowers. It’s a great place to sit and take in the architectural details of the buildings.

The Pearl Street District is on the western edge of the city, slightly north of the Civic Center District at 11th Avenue and 55th Street. The district is located along railroad tracks. A boarding house and saloon in the district were popular with travelers and workers. With the demise of the railroad in the 1930s, the area was isolated and began to fall into disrepair, There are four buildings in the area that were ready for demolition in the 1980s because of their lack of care. They were saved by private investors and developers. These buildings are architecturally diverse. A cast iron front building, a Classical Revival building, one in Greek Revival Style, and an Italianate two-story structure made of Cream City Brick. While they have served as boarding houses, saloons, and grocery stores, today they are used as business offices. A walk through the Historic Districts of Kenosha can be accomplished in one day. I like summer; let me count the ways

I like summer rain. Not at noon when everyone wants to be outside in the sunshine swimming, if you are lucky enough to be at the beach. But after the sun sets, when the world is dark and lightning brightens the sky only to be followed by the predictable strike of thunder. We count the seconds between the light and sound to guess how far the storm is from us. One thousand one, one thousand two... I like bug bites. They’re the result of spending time outside playing too much croquet or badminton or golf or bocce or Wiffle ball. We have so much fun and are so intent on swatting balls (or shuttlecocks) we forget about swatting bugs. Until later, when we are inside; then I like anti-itch cream. I like it a lot. I like running out of Popsicles or ice cream. It means we’ve been indulging in frozen concoctions to cope with the heat of summer’s long days. We may even skip a meal because we are

outside playing and instead supplement with treats from the freezer. Ice cream for lunch = joy. I like running out of toilet paper. It happens when everyone is home and... well... feeling at home. I add bonus points to this merry moment if everyone remembers to flush. I like when everyone flushes. It feels miraculous, because I believe it is. I like weeds. In another universe they may be expensive, coveted plants (although I doubt it). Here, on earth, in my yard, I have the opportunity to ban them from the garden – even though they are unruly and refuse to obey humans. Weeds are good because they provide me with a worthwhile task: pulling them.

I like sand on the kitchen floor. The bathroom floor. The carpet. The dog’s hair. The kids’ hair. My bathing suit. You name it. Sand can be everywhere during the summer months. I think it may even self-multiply. But it indicates one thing: the beach. And the beach – in a word – is good. Well, that and wet. And sandy. I like standing in line to ride the roller coaster. It means I am at an amusement park and that is amusing. Queuing up (a fancy term I learned during a Disney visit) allows me to anticipate the fun. It prolongs the entertainment and gives me more bang for my buck. Standing in line is at the heart of the free amusement park experience. Sometimes I just stand in line, without buying a ticket to ride. But not often. I like sweating in the summer sun. It means I am burning calories, even if I am just sitting in a lawn chair with a good book. Burning calories is always a

could go in and change, but you don’t. Wet swimsuit butt is a rite of summer and shouldn’t be squandered. I like a farmer’s tan. It says I’ve been outside doing something that is something – beyond sitting in a lawn chair with a good book. It also indicates I’ve been sweating because doing something in the summer invariably involves sweat. A farmer’s tan is almost like killing two birds with one stone. (Not that we encourage bird murder in my neighborhood. I like

birds.) I like cleaning the kitchen 17 times a day because the kids are home from school and they are (and I’m not exaggerating) perpetually hungry. Despite finding the frying pan in the sink (again) and an ongoing inability to keep the fridge stocked, I like having them home during the summer. When the house is full, so is my heart. (Cheesy, I know.) I like cheese. All year long. No explanation needed. Summer is humidity, sticky skin, burnt shoulders, pollen, allergies, hot car seats, fruit flies on bananas, bees in your lemonade,

wood ticks on your leg, ants in your kitchen, mosquitoes in the air and gnats in your nose. It is also a time to ride with the top down, walk barefoot, grill dinner, eat fresh berries, run through the sprinkler, soak in the sun, spend time together and see the glass as half full – preferably with your favorite summertime beverage. Fox Charities and you bring in $20,000 to help poverty-stricken

Again Fox Charities and all of you have been so generous to The Time Is Now to Help and all the people we bring our life changing assistance to. The Spring Fox Charities $10,000 matching grant provided $20,000 in poverty assistance to those most in need in our communities. You were once more inspired to meet this grant with enthusiasm. Fox Charities and all of you felt the calling to lift up our povertystricken neighbors and give them the second chance they so desperately needed. Your compassionate donations, matched by Fox Charities, provided the following lifechanging assistance. This is how all of us helped:

provide warm showers and water for dish washing. Our fellow Americans are full of gratitude for all of you and Fox Charities for providing them with the utility assistance they needed this spring and summer. Food – $1,391.75 Your donations, matched by the Spring Fox Charities $10,000 matching grant, provided valuable food assistance and necessary emergency food deliveries by volunteers. Again we provided grocery gift cards to those who had transportation to the grocery store. When someone is not capable of getting to the store because of disability or illness, food is purchased by a volunteer and delivered. Children, single mothers and working-poor families were provided food to help during the summer school vacation. Senior citizens who run short of food due to medical expenses or transportation needs were provided the supplemental food they needed to eat healthy. We together have been there to provide lifegiving food. Fox Charities and all of you have removed the very real pains of hunger for many in our communities.

Rent and shelter –$9,263.99 Living on the verge of eviction or foreclosure is something we see almost daily at The Time Is Now to Help. Many people live one car repair, medical bill or illness away from homelessness. Three working-poor families and their children were saved from impending homelessness. Low wage jobs do not cover the life emergencies we all encounter. Two senior citizens were spared homelessness and we removed the overwhelming stress they were enduring due to the threat of losing their apartments. Three single mothers and a woman disabled due to a chronic debilitating disease were provided stable shelter. Fox Charities and all of you have made a real difference in the lives of these people. Thank you and God bless you.

Transportation – $2,393.21 Fox Charities and all of you have made transportation possible for families struggling with sick children, cancer patients, working poor families and senior citizens with disabilities. They are all so grateful for the Spring Fox Charities $10,000 matching grant and all of you providing the donations necessary to provide this assistance. God bless all of you and Fox Charities for removing the stress and worry over safe, reliable transportation.

Utilities – $1,871.63 Electricity, $1,100; gas, $771.63 Thanks to the Spring Fox Charities $10,000 matching grant, and your generosity, we were able to pay two senior citizens’ and two disabled individuals’ high utility bills. Natural gas and electric utilities were prevented from disconnection thanks to you and Fox Charities. Together we have made sure lights stay on, refrigerators and stoves are working, water heaters

Dog training license now available

Training dogs for bird hunting is a popular activity throughout Wisconsin, and an improved licensing process coupled with new public lands open for dog training will make it easier than ever to prepare dogs for hunting season. As authorized by state code, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources allows trainers to train bird hunting dogs on designated state properties. However, a bird dog training license is required for dog training on state and private lands whenever captive wild birds are used. An updated licensing process will allow a bird dog trainer to train a dog on any designated dog training grounds within state properties or on private property with landowner permission. Previously,

trainers were required to obtain individual permits for each property on which they wished to train their dogs. The new application process will began June 15. Applicants can complete an application online, deliver a completed form to the nearest Department Service Center or send an application via mail to receive approval and the appropriate leg bands. A licensed bird dog trainer may possess and use the following live captive-bred species for dog training purposes: • Gray (Hungarian) partridge; • Chukar; • Red-legged partridge; • Mallard duck (bred in captivity); • Ring-necked pheasant; • Reeves pheasant; and • Bobwhite quail and other species of the subfamily odontophorinae. The department currently maintains six Class 1 Dog Training Grounds and 50 Class 2 Dog Training Grounds. Class 1 dog training grounds allow bird dog training year-round, and are posted, marked or designated as department lands, while Class 2 grounds include department lands approved for training, but not identified in code. The department is in the process of establishing additional Class 2 dog training grounds to provide additional opportunities for hunting dog owners to conduct training on state lands. Eventually, the department hopes to establish at least one Class 2 dog training ground in counties with adequate state lands and where public demand is high. For additional resources, including more information regarding the new licensing process, property maps identifying dog training locations, and an application form, search the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for keywords “dog training.”

For the love of butterflies Local woman offers tips on setting up a monarch garden By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

In 2005, Salem resident Judy Grasser noticed black swallowtail butterflies flitting through various plants in her yard. They made her remember her earlier interest in butterflies. The interest in black swallowtails morphed into and interest in Monarch butterflies, whose existence is becoming precarious worldwide. Grasser began collecting the eggs and raising the Monarchs in 2014, having her garden plot declared a Monarch way station. There are approximately 11,000 way stations in the United States and Canada. On July 18, she held a workshop on how to create a Monarch way station at the Community Library, Salem branch. Nearly 20 members of the public, from youngsters to seniors, attended. Some were already encouraging and raising butterflies, some were new to the idea. Grasser explained the need for host and nectar plants. The hosts for Monarch butterflies are milkweed plants, particularly common (Asclepias syriaci), swamp (Asclepias incarnata) and prairie (Asclepias sullivanti) milkweed and butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa). Knowing the Latin names is important, according to Grasser, because gardeners need these particular plants since these are the only ones where butterflies will lay eggs. The eggs are the favorite food of many predators like ants, spiders and wasps.

Grasser also advises people to make sure that any host plants to be transplanted have not been sprayed with pesticides. What kills mosquitoes kills Monarchs. After the eggs hatch and the caterpillars move into the chrysalis stage, the newly emerged butterflies will need nectar plants. A mix of perennials and annuals is best. Perennials come up every year but their blooming time is short. Annuals bloom for a longer period, but may need to be replanted although some reseed themselves. Here again, Latin names are important. There are numerous Liatris, or Blazing Star but only Liatris Ligulistylis Blazing Star has been called the ultimate Monarch magnet. Other Monarch nectar perennials include Jo Pye Weed (species Eupatorium) and Asters. Zinnias, Lantana (common big sage, wild sage, red sage), Mexican sunflower and tropical milkweed are some annuals that are good Monarch nectar flowers. A way station also needs woody trees and shrubs close by for shelter during storms and a source of water. The source of water could be a pond or a birdbath. By early October, three generations of Monarchs have lived and died and the fourth generation is ready for the migration to Mexico. They will return next spring. But only if people have made sure the plants they need to survive and thrive are still growing. The presentation featured

surprise guest Kathy Hatcher, who’s father, Kenneth C. Brugger, was the man who discovered where the Monarch overwinters in Mexico. “My dad was a retired engineer from Jockey who ended up in Mexico as a textile consultant,” Hatcher said. “While he was driving in a heavy rainstorm through the volcanic mountains in Mexico just west of Mexico City in 1973,” she continued, “he realized he was driving over thousands of dead Monarchs.” According to Brugger’s obituary in The New York Times, he contacted Fred A. Urquhart, a University of Toronto scientist who had searched for the Monarch wintering grounds since 1940. Urquhart convinced Brugger to return to search further. Brugger and his wife Catalina made their way through a forest of Oyamel firs and when they reached 10,000 feet, they found trees that were covered with Monarchs. Later estimates put the number at four million. Grasser’s next scheduled workshop will be at the Walworth County Fair in early September where she will be in the butterfly pavilion. She will also speak at the Walworth Golden Years retirement home. “People have discovered that healing gardens are important,” Grasser said, “and a healing garden with butterflies is a good idea.” Grasser is planning another Community Library workshop that will be on catch and release. It has yet to be scheduled.

Preserving the Monarch migration

Monarchs butterflies can travel between 50 and 100 miles a day. The farthest ranging monarch butterfly recorded traveled 265 miles in one day. In general, it may take a butterfly two months to complete the migration to Mexico. Monarchs in Eastern North America migrate to the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Monarchs in Western North America overwinter in California. In Mexico, much of the land within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is communally owned “ejido” land. Poor farmers who have relied on these forests for lumbering, firewood, and construction material for generations are the residents in these areas. The Mexican Government recognized the importance of Oyamel fir forests to monarch butterflies and created the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Logging was outlawed in the core zone when the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve was created in 1986, yet illegal logging remains a problem today. In addition to facing shrinking host plants in North America, the monarch faces the threat of deforestation of the wintering habitat. There are numerous organizations that work to promote sustainable forestry practices and help residents to find ways to supplement
