History Center is tangible link to Kenosha of old By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
Nestled between the 1866 historic Kenosha lighthouse and the current water treatment plant on Simmons Island is the Kenosha History Center. The center, which is in a former water treatment building built in 1917, is home to all sorts of Kenosha history displayed in galleries designed to walk visitors through time. The Kenosha Historical Society was founded in 1878. Its goal is to preserve and research the cultural heritage of Kenosha County and Southeastern Wisconsin and at the same time present the cultural heritage to the public. The society moved to the present location, 220 51st Place. The large building provides ample space to exhibit in three separate galleries items large and small. On first entering the building, visitors enter the Lyman Gallery, featuring various storefronts that would have been seen in Kenosha in the early days. Volunteer docents welcome visitors and are available to answer questions about the history of Kenosha and any of the exhibits. The Millenary Shop where women of the day went to have their hats custom made is no longer seen in most American cities.
While photography studios also displayed here are still found, they are certainly very different. The extremely large cameras of olden days, produced an image much more slowly than today’s high-speed film or digital cameras. The Yesteryear Gallery presents life in Kenosha and southern Wisconsin from the early settlement days until 1900. While the gallery is not large, it is filled with memorabilia and re-creations of the stores of the day. The late 1800s general stores were stores much like our department stores but on a much smaller level. It was a place to pick up a new dress or material to make one, or pots and pans for the kitchen. A stop at the one-room schoolhouse display provides a contrast for those in school today. No computers or televisions are found anywhere in this classroom. The wood or coal-burning heater is in the classroom and must be stoked regularly and refilled to provide heat. Air conditioning? That’s what windows are for. Or if there is no glass in the windows, the shutters. The largest gallery is the Rambler Legacy Hall, which covers the industrial time from 1900 through the late 20th century. The auto mak-
ing legacy, started with the Jeffrey and continued with the Nash Rambler, and the development of American Motors, making Kenosha one of the largest auto producers of the time, but not as large as Detroit. The gallery features many autos on display and rep-

I’m trending!”), which reduces self-control, making us more likely to lash out strongly toward people who don’t share our opinions. One of the researchers said this reduction in selfcontrol is similar to behavior displayed by people who are inebriated. Imagine the result if someone who was actually tipsy decided to explore social media. The lashing out effect could be multiplied. I’ve witnessed more thrashing, trashing and bashing in the last year than probably the rest of my cumulative life, and I was born before the Internet was invented, so that’s a long time. Spouting one’s opinions while name-calling and indulging in a profanity or two is no longer seen as out of line or rash. It’s run of the mill and it’s caused me to form an opinion of my own. The Internet is making us mean. I’m not alone in my thinking. One research study found that social network

Since the dawn of time, people have had opinions on everything from politics to the best way to make fire to whether a club or spear is better for hunting the wooly mammoth. Mostly politics. While people have always had opinions, they weren’t inclined to share them with just anyone or everyone. Uncle Jim and Grandma Betty may have wrestled (loudly) with various issues over Sunday dinner, but in general people reserved their opinions for friends and family. A person wouldn’t shout their political inclinations from a rooftop or take out a billboard proclaiming viewpoints differing from theirs were dumber than a wooly mammoth and embraced only by idiots. Going public with negativity like that would be out of line. It wouldn’t be prudent. Or nice. Times change. While people continue to form opinions, they aren’t afraid to share. But not faceto-face over Sunday dinner. That sort of thing is nearly extinct. People who might not get in your face with their political (or other) rants in person are more than glad to do so online. Social media. I love it. It’s a great way to stay in touch and know who’s on vacation when and where. But it’s also become a place to share one’s opinion on parenting, prayer, politics, health care, the Kardashians, the economy and terrorists. Most

Kenosha County Fair runs Aug. 19-22 The Kenosha County Fair is back again this year from Wednesday, Aug. 19, to Sunday, Aug. 22. The fairgrounds will open 8 a.m. and close midnight each day. The five-day fair has a variety of events for everyone to enjoy. Between the entertainment, animals, contests and an abundance of fair foods, there will be plenty to keep the family busy. The crowning of the Fairest of the Fair is set for Wednesday night at 9 p.m.
Visitors will have a chance to make a bid in this year’s pie auction Saturday evening and then pick up the pace by also checking out the Demolition Derby Sunday at 1:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. Events cover every end of the spectrum. For those who love power – both human and engine – the Pedal Tractor Pull is Thursday and Friday morning and the Garden Tractor Pull is Saturday at 10 a.m. The first four places win cash prizes. What’s a county fair with-
out a hay bale-throwing contest? Watch the hay-hurling Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the show ring, or give it a hand yourself for just $1 entry fee. Cash and prizes are awarded to the champions. Visitors also have the chance to show off their skills at a talent contest Thursday – anybody ages 2 and up can join in. Kids ages 12 and younger are invited to participate in a fairground-wide scavenger hunt Thursday at 10 a.m., fol-
lowed the next day by the annual Children’s Parade. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, but registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Children in costume get free admission. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded to participants. Live entertainment includes a Karaoke Show with Nick Dattilo from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Lite Creek Side Stage. The Econolimes will take the stage Thursday night from 8 to midnight; on Friday at
8 p.m. Stetsin and Lace will perform; and Bella Cain will play Saturday night. Sunday will wrap up with Burro Creek from 1 to 3 p.m. and the Class of ‘62 from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Miller Lite Creek Side Stage.
Admission Tickets cost $9 for adults ages 12 and up, $5 for children ages 8 to 11 and free for children 7 and younger. Season passes are also available for $30 for adults and $10 for
children. Wednesday, Aug. 19, is “Senior Day” – anyone 62 and older will be admitted for $6. For a $5 admission on Wednesday, Aug. 19, or Thursday, Aug. 20, bring in two non-perishable food items between 8 a.m. and noon. Admission is non-refundable, regardless of any cancellations in entertainment. There is a $5 fee for IRA racing plus the price of admission Friday and Saturday of the fair.
Paddock Lake clarifies ash tree removal rebate By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
In 2007, when the Paddock Lake Village Board members became aware of the threat posed by the Emerald Ash Borer, they planned ahead. That board, lead by Dave Buehn, began putting money aside at the end of the year from the Tree Commission and road maintenance into a reserve fund. They knew the village would need funds to remove ash trees when they died and became dangerous. The 2007 tree survey showed that almost three quarters of all the ash trees within Paddock Lake were on private property and the village had more in reserves then needed to take down trees on village right of way. “The Village Board knew removing the diseased and dead trees would be a bur-
den to the residents as the Ash Borer scoured through the village much faster than expected,” Village Administrator Tim Popanda said. “At the beginning of this year, a program to rebate 50 percent of tree removal costs for two trees per property went into effect,” he said. Removing the trees is a public safety issue, and making sure they are removed protects both village and private properties. In order to qualify for the rebate, homeowners must use a tree trimming and removal service that is registered with the village. The village does have a list, but Popanda said homeowners can use unregistered companies as long as the company registers prior to monetary disbursement. Requiring tree trimming and removal companies to register began some years
ago. Residents would hire a company to remove a tree and then the company would place brush on the curb for chipping. “This was costly to the village,” Popanda said, “so the village began requiring the tree services to register and take out a $200 bond and a permit for each removal.” When a company would put the brush on the curb for the village to chip rather than chipping it, the village could then draw on the $200 bond to cover village costs. Popanda said the regulations have grown from the original plan. “We make sure the company has the proper insurance and good, quality equipment.” So far, the village has awarded three rebates to three homeowners. Each has been around $500. Popanda said he has seen the cost of tree removal drop
significantly. “There is a lot address from one to three of competition and the com- units, since there are three panies know they must have businesses in the building. good prices to get the jobs.” The office, at 24501 75th Street, currently houses her Billing deficiencies law office, her husband LarPopanda said the village ry Zamba’s photography sturecently conducted an au- dio and a contractor. dit of the sanitary billing in According to Popanda, the village and found a few Zamba believes that since businesses that appeared to there is only one bathroom, be under-billed. they should pay for one unit. Mobil is charged one unit, Burger King three and then five more for the car wash. Each unit is charged $210.42 per quarter. The board discussed the Zamba request at the committee of the whole meeting on July 14. No decision will be made until the July 21 regular board meeting.

those Facebook likes are making us act drunk and mean, not to mention faceless, which is ironic. (But that’s just my opinion.) We all possess ideas, perspectives, beliefs, viewpoints and opinions. That won’t change. And it’s safe and logical to say we all
(Continued from page 3) believe our opinion to be the astute, intelligent and correct one. That’s OK. Disrespecting others is not. It has, however, become the norm – or at the very least commonplace. Call me naïve or behind the times or even a wooly mammoth, but that makes me
sad. Because, in addition to opinions, we all have feelings. And words – whether spoken or on a screen – can hurt. If you were here, I’d tell you that to your face and we could talk about it, the old-fashioned way, maybe even over Sunday dinner. Wouldn’t that be nice?
