Armed man shot, killed by deputy
Sheriff said he pointed shotgun at deputy before he fired
EARLENE FREDERICK Hi-Liter
Police (below) stand watch near a home on 236th Avenue in Paddock Lake where a Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 47-yearold man who reportedly pointed a shotgun at them Saturday evening. Sheriff David Beth (inset) speaks to the media during a news conference regarding the shooting Sunday afternoon.
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
A 47-year-old Paddock Lake resident is dead following an officer-involved shooting Saturday. Darren Myron Fude, who reportedly pointed a shotgun at two of three Kenosha County Sheriff’s deputies at a residence in the 6100 block of 236th Avenue in Salem, was the suspect in an earlier motorcycle crash that occurred on 31st Street, west of Highway 75. The shooting is the first for the sheriff’s department since 2007. Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said in an announcement Sunday that deputies launched an investigation into the motorcycle accident when authorities began receiving calls from witnesses to the crash. Fude, who abandoned the motorcycle, was picked up by another vehicle and was subsequently tracked to the Town of Salem residence. When deputies arrived, they inquired with a resident of the house who drove the motorcycle. “After a discussion heard in the background in the back of the house, the husband came out to the front door with a shotgun,” Beth said. “The deputies tried their best
to take partial cover in the front yard and ordered the suspect to put the shotgun down several times.” When Fude allegedly pointed the gun at two of responding deputies, the third deputy fired multiple rounds, which caused him to fall to the ground. There, deputies attempted CPR and First Aid as Salem Fire and Rescue was en route. Fude was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital, Kenosha, where he was pronounced dead. “I spoke to the wife, and saw two of their children,” said Beth, regarding the notification of Fude’s family. “It was a very difficult situation,” he added. Additionally, Beth said, Fude’s parents and brother, who were at St. Catherine’s Hospital, said Fude’s behavior was uncharacteristic. “At least one of the family members did not know Darren had any type of weapon in the house,” Beth said. The Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s office is expected to complete an autopsy Sunday. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation will

Meandering through the countryside Area’s Rustic Roads offer a relaxing glimpse of state’s beauty
By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
There was a time when traveling Wisconsin meant following narrow roads through the countryside. These roads were originally little more than paths that local residents, many of them farmers, drove their wagons pulled by horses along to obtain supplies for their farm or to take their crops to market. Eventually these paths became gravel roads, and then many were paved and the horse drawn wagons were replaced with the automobile and some of the country roads, responding to the increase in population, became highways. In an effort to maintain many of these country roads free of billboards and representing the spirit of Wisconsin, the state designated some of the picturesque country
roads that meander through the state as Rustic Roads. While the Wisconsin Legislature created Rustic Roads in 1973, it was not until 1975 that Rustic Road 1 was designated. It was a country road in the northwest quadrant of the state just north of Medford. Crossing through hills and valleys that were formed by the last Wisconsin glacier nearly 12,000 years ago, it was the perfect choice to represent the Rustic Roads of Wisconsin. Today there are more than 115 Rustic Roads that cover more than 665 miles throughout the state. A Rustic Road is designated by a brown sign with yellow lettering with an outline of Wisconsin and the words Rustic Road. Each Rustic Road is given a route number prefaced with an R. Most of the Rustic Roads are short roads from two to about six

School audit attributes fund losses to theft By Gail Peckler-Dziki
A forensic audit of Salem Grade School district finances details a loss of more than $18,000 in school funds to possible employee theft. The audit, performed by Balanced Edge, was undertaken in an attempt by district officials to identify improper payments and other financial irregularities that took place while Mary Anderson was the district’s bookkeeper. The audit covered five years of overtime payments and other irregularities for 2013-2014. The audit report will be submitted to EMC Insurance to assist that firm’s evaluation of Salem’s claim for damages. The report details a professional liability claim for $19,500. This was a payment to the Internal Revenue Service, the bulk of which was found to be for penalties. In addition, the report says the district paid $17,490 in overtime costs for the past five years of Anderson’s employment. An additional $1,100 in

Program to examine post-HS transition On Nov. 19, Family Voices of Wisconsin, Wilmot Union High School and the Southeast Regional Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs will present the program, “What’s After High School? Training on Transition” The presentation runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wilmot Union High School (Room 180), 11112 308th Avenue, Wilmot. “What’s After High School?” is a broad overview
of the transition to adult life for youth with disabilities and special health care needs and includes the following topics: envisioning a youth’s future in the community; the role of schools; long-term supports; vocational resources; transitioning to adult health care; guardianship and other legal options; advocacy; and the fundamentals of self-determination. This training is ideal for families who have youth age
14 to 21 and providers who work with youth and young adults. The training is free to participants. A light meal and resource binder will be provided. To learn more about the training, go to the Family Voices website at www.familyvoicesofwisconsin.com. To register, contact the Southeast Regional Center at (414) 266-3189 or (800) 2345437, or email Brad Holman at bholman@chw.org.
Art imitates life in WHS presentation of ‘Play On’
The fall play at Wilmot High School this year is “Play On,” written by Rick Abbot. Performances are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 and 7 p.m. Admission is $5. “Play On” is the story of a theater group trying to put on a play in which everything that can go wrong does. The cast of 10 takes the audience through a rehearsal, dress rehearsal and then the play itself despite an interfering playwright, bickering actors and a frustrated director. Twenty-five Wilmot students are involved in this
year’s production. The cast not only had to learn the lines to the play, they also had to remember to drop lines, forget their place and lose props on purpose. “Play On” offers great insight as to

assume the responsibilities of the investigation, per Kenosha County protocol, Beth said. While the department has responded to calls at the Fude residence in the past, none were weapons related. The officer, who fired the fatal shot, has been placed
on administrative leave. Beth stated the officer has been with the sheriff’s department for 4 ½ years. “He is a very good officer in our department,” he said. Pending an interview with the DOJ, the officer’s name will not be released until Monday, Beth said.

all time cards to be approved by supervisors, the audit showed that only about half of Anderson’s time cards had approval signatures. The auditors discovered that Anderson’s claims for overtime hours were higher than the average and they discovered that Anderson’s overtime occurred or was higher in weeks when she had days off for sick, vacation or training time. The report also states that the current bookkeeper does not claim any overtime. After working for Salem, Anderson was employed at Wheatland Center Grade School. She was there less than a year when the administration became suspicious of Anderson’s financial activities. That suspicion, according to Wheatland district administrator Marty McGinley, led to a call to the Kenosha County Sheriff department and the beginning of an investigation. As of deadline for this edition there had been no word regarding the possibility of Salem also requesting a criminal investigation.
funds that were unaccounted for included American Express charges, duplicate reimbursements and money missing from deposits, among other things, according to the report. Anderson reported to district Business Manager Peter Geisel into early 2011 and Andy Feuling though late 2012. Current Business Manager Susan Jarvis began questioning certain financial activity when she was hired in 2014. Those included delays in completing the June 2013 audit, an auditor unable to balance the checking account, failure of Anderson to produce a “check register” when requested, missing deposit amounts reported by the bank, a payment for summer school work to a relative and unusual and oblique posting of American Express transactions, according to the audit. The report continues by stating “a series of confrontations over these issues led to Ms. Anderson’s resignation in 7/14.” While district policy is that

Pearce’s haunted mansion and hayride offer spine-tingling thrills By Janet Deaver-Pack

dark-colored study has an odd green chair sitting in it. The kitchen is set with a stove, a table with candlesticks…and a skeletal guest. The funeral room shows deep, bloody Victorian-red coloration, featuring gathers of flowers and a casket. And the surgery room is positively grisly. Just beyond, the hay-filled wagon pulled by a tractor takes visitors into the dark fields and woods where haunts, sepulchral scenes, and horrifying venues abound. Screams tear through the dark. These are just a few of the visions waiting to curdle one’s blood at “The Estate of Terror” which is open at Pearce’s Farm until Halloween. The features – a haunted mansion and a spine-tingling hayride – are two frightening shows rather than a lone attraction. The spooky events are held at the site of the Pearce Farm Stand at the corner of highways 67 and F, immediately west of Williams Bay and north of Fontana. It’s a perfect way for a farm to host a celebration during the season of ghosts, spirits, and frightening escapades. “The Estate of Terror” is the invention of two grandsons of Bob and Mary Ann
Pearce, the owners of the farm and the locally renowned produce stand. Grandson Bobby Pearce discussed the idea for some time before opening the initial haunted mansion and hayride in October three years ago. This year they have changed the name to the more evocative “Estate of Terror,” and escalated the fright levels. The wagons for the haunted hayride hold a total of 40 people and the trip through Witchwood Forest takes 20-25 minutes. The story of what’s haunting the forest has something to do with a tragic circus train crash on the outskirts of the property. The haunted mansion has a more complicated storyline, which can be found in detail on the website. The theme is “Dead and Breakfast.” The “Estate of Terror” will be open Fridays and Saturdays 7 to 10:30 p.m. through Halloween, Oct. 31. The Pearce Family Farm is at W5740 N. Walworth Road, Walworth. Cozy fire pits and concessions are available for guests. Call (262) 949-4992 with questions or to request a reservation. The walk through the mansion and hayride are recommended for people older than 10. For more information visit estateofterror. com.
More Halloween fun
The area boasts several places to take part in some Halloween fun, from kid- and familyfriendly hayrides and mazes to haunted houses not for the faint of heart.
Twisted Realms
At Twisted Realms, it’s up to visitors “to find their way through the maze and escape the terror,” according to the website, and takes place at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St. in Elkhorn. Several areas of the haunt require participants to push buttons, pull levers, move objects, open doors, crawl, or maybe even cause an explosion in a wall to get out. Twisted Realms is open from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Fridays, Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31; and Saturdays from 7:30 to 10 p.m., Oct. 22, 25, 29 and Nov. 1. On average, it takes about 30 minutes to get all the way through the haunted house. The recommended age for the
nighttime events are no one under the age of 13. General admission for the haunted house is $15 per person with a VIP option (go straight to the front of the line plus get two free game tickets) for $25. A double tap admission is also offered, for $40 a person, allowing two visits to Twisted Realms with VIP admission on both. Additionally, on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., the site features a Family House, suitable for most ages. Participants will travel through the haunted house with the lights off and special effects on but no one inside will be scaring people. The cost for Family House is $10 a person. Haunts offers plenty for visitors – and actors
By Heather Ruenz

quick drive through any neighborhood reveals displays of all things related to Halloween – from pumpkins and scarecrows to coffins, spider webs and ghouls. Along similar lines of fun and scary, the area offers a wide variety of haunted happenings including Shockwave Haunts in Whitewater. Though the four haunts Shockwave offers are not necessarily for the faint of heart, the spooking is all in good fun, according to Kat McFaul, one of about 50 actors in all that love nothing more than giving guests a good scare. “We have a great group, year in and year out,” McFaul, who has been involved for about five years, said. “And we get a huge age range of people that come out for our haunts.” Visitors aren’t the only ones who vary in age, she said. The characters are 14 to about 70 years old. “It’s proof that people of all ages love Halloween, whether they’re scaring others – or making them laugh – or that’s happening to them,” McFaul said. A large number of the characters at Shockwave are area high school students and McFaul said the initial actor meeting is where the fun starts. “That’s where people get placed into roles already created, like there are areas built for shorter people, others for tall people and some we custom build,” she said. This is the second year for McKenna Riley, a sophomore at Whitewater High School. Her character lies in a glass coffin. “There’s a strobe light in the room and people are crawling across the floor. I’m under the floor and it’s great to see their reactions,” Riley said. WHS sophomore Jezzaray Serrano is in his first year as a character. He is a zombie that holds a cloth up in front of his head and face and then pulls it down and screams at people. “A few people expect it but some have actually run into me, not even knowing I’m there,” Serrano said, adding that older people that go through the haunt are “awesome because they laugh a lot.” Tyler Marinkovic, also a sophomore at WHS, said being part of Shockwave Haunts is fun. “I kind of wanted to do this because McKenna told me about it and I thought, ‘This would be so fun,’” Marinkovic said. McFaul, one of several people who applies makeup to the characters’ faces and necks, said that extra duty came about because she wore a mask her first year at Shockwave and disliked it. “My boss, Dick Kraus, said if I wanted to do makeup I needed to make it look Hollywood,” McFaul said. The cost for any one haunt is $10; for three, $18; and for all four $20. Shockwave Haunts is located at The Fuzzy Pig, N8660 Clover Valley Rd., Whitewater. For more information call (262) 473-4574, send an email to shockwavehaunts@gmail.com or visit shockwavehaunts.com.

For families with younger children or those looking for a less scary hayride, the first ride each night is described as “family friendly.” Dan Patch Stables is located just east of Lake Geneva on Highway 50 near the entrance to Grand Geneva Resort. • Time is now were supposed to have 90 days to relocate but were only given fifteen minutes to pack a few days later. The mother and children were torn from their home and belongings and forced to live in their car. They were brought to our attention and we came to their rescue. After several nights spent in a cold car the three scared and confused children were able to move into a safe warm apartment. A single mother who was left to raise two children on her own, while battling a debilitating illness, was not receiving any assistance from the father of her children. Her husband had been abusive and took most their belongings, along with the only car that ran well. Her illness caused her to lose her job and what little money she had was spent on car repairs to the remaining old car and expenses for the children. They were facing eviction and hunger. “We” provided a donated vehicle, gas, food, household necessities, utility assistance and paid their overdue rent. The pains of poverty we removed have changed their life from one of despair and stress to relief and happiness. A senior gentleman that had recently lost his wife after many years of marriage was given assistance with his rent and utilities. We together have helped to ease his grief and remove his pains of poverty. A working poor family was struggling after a car accident totaled the only car they had for job transportation. The loss in work hours prevented full payment of their utility bill which they were not able to catch up on over the summer. By the time they contacted The Time is Now to Help their utilities were disconnected and they had a large outstanding bill. We

paid that bill and restored utilities to their home just before the cold weather hit last week. The family is working regular hours again and able to stay on their budget. A young woman beginning again on her own after leaving an abusive relationship was given help with her rent and utilities. She just started a job and should be able to support herself in the future. She just needed our helping hand to carry her over until she was financially independent. We restored her confidence that she could do this on her own. The mother that is caring for her child that is hospitalized as he undergoes grueling cancer treatments was given help with additional rent assistance, food and gas. This 2-year-old boy is brave and trying to be strong. Please keep him in your prayers as he continues these treatments for several more months. These are just a few of the people helped in the last few days thanks to all of “You” and the Barnabas donors. We can’t wait to share with you next week the full report on where your donations were used to help our fellow creations in need. We continue to receive requests daily for our assistance. We cannot answer these requests alone and thanks to all of “You” and the Barnabas donors we don’t have to. No one should have
to go hungry or endure the fear of eviction and utility disconnection, but it is happening everywhere around us. Our veterans, senior citizens and the disabled should not have to do without dental care, beds, toiletries, food and household necessities. Our children should not have to go to bed hungry, live in cars or without utilities. These situations should not be happening in our communities, yet they are. Thanks to all of “You” we are easing these pains and stresses of poverty. We are being a solution to these troubling situations. We are restoring smiles to those that were living in constant fear and stress. We can’t wait to see the final results of the assistance provided by all of “You” and the Barnabas $61,500 Matching Grant. It will be huge. It will be life changing. Thank you and God bless you for helping.
