Citing costs and low attendance numbers, the Silver Lake Community Library will close its doors effective Dec. 15. The move comes after months of discussion regarding the cost of loaning items, which are higher than two other branches. Gail Peckler-Dziki, a library board member, said Library Director LeaAnn Briese presented findings indicating the Silver Lake branch spends more than the two other branches in the system, including Twin Lakes and Salem. “We spent significantly more per item borrowed at Silver Lake, than the other two branches,” Peckler-Dziki said. The Silver Lake Branch, located at 729 S. Cogswell Dr., spends $8 per item, compared to Salem ($2) and Twin Lakes ($4). From a financial perspective, Silver Lake has operated at a minimum within the last few years, conducting business beneath the Consumer Price Index. Additionally, only 3 to 5 percent of community library patrons utilize the Silver Lake branch. Furthermore, Peckler-Dziki cited limited space and facilities to expand within Silver Lake. “The state of the many buildings there is less than desirable,” she said, noting the Twin Lakes location expanded after the landlord opted to increase that branch’s space.

This is especially true if you have teenagers, who are easily infuriated by their most embarrassing parents. Writing about pets, on the other hand, is a nobrainer. To the best of my

On occasion, I receive emails from readers requesting information about what it takes to write a column. Just how does one go about being a columnist? Magic wand aside, there are numerous answers to the question, depending on the day. But I thought it might be convenient to put them all in one place. Or mostly one place, I may have left some of my notes on the piano. Column writing is serious business meant mostly for non-serious people especially if you are attempting to write humor. The ability to laugh at your own foibles, errors and general imperfection is practically essential. If you can’t laugh at yourself, how are you going to get others to laugh at you? That is why, when you do something stupid, you want to make sure you take notes so you can relay your foolishness to the rest of the world. I’m pretty good at getting myself involved in adventures that don’t always turn out as planned. When this happens I can hardly wait to do what any inept person (a.k.a. columnist) would do: transcribe them for all of posterity. Perhaps some day even my great grandkids will know how laughable I was. One can only hope.

the daughter and son excused themselves, and I sat down to talk to the mother. I noticed how nervous the mother was as we spoke. I asked about her job experience and what she felt was keeping her from maintaining employment. The mother shared a brief history on her military duty, a sexual assault while enlisted and then returning home to civilian life. Her husband returned a year later with PTSD as well, but his was due to active duty, not a sexual assault and physical abuse. The husband’s anger spilled over into physical and verbal abuse toward the mother very shortly after his return. The wife confessed she had told no one about the sexual assault while she was in the military. When she told her husband was the first time she feared for her life. After her husband nearly strangled her, the woman said she knew she needed to get away. After several scary months of sleeping on her mother’s couch and the children sleeping on the floor, the husband finally agreed to leave her alone and granted her a divorce. The mother and children moved back into the small rental they had all previously shared, only to find all the damage the husband had done during their absence. That was the damage I was seeing when I came to their home. I talked to the mother about her health problems. She suffered from painful migraines. The mother said these were often induced by stressful situations. The mother said she had been trying to find a job but she knew she had to find an environment that would be non-stressinducing and quiet. I went over her qualifications and was pleased to find she was educated and well spoken. I know how good people find themselves in bad situations but still find it hard to comprehend that a woman with her military training, intelligence and manners could be in an abusive relationship. It was almost like she read my mind as the woman said, “I know what you’re thinking. How could I let my husband abuse me for over a year, right? I have been in treatment for the past six months and I understand now how my low self-esteem let people take advantage of me. I am ready to move on from this. I need to show my kids that life is worth fighting for. I need to show them that I will not give up.” I was relieved to see the will to improve her life she still had. Sometimes when I pay a visit to our fellow Americans they seem to have lost all will to fight any longer. Sometimes it is due to the numerous prescription medications they are put on to numb the pain and anxiety. Sometimes it is due to the hardships and painful experiences they have been through in life. I was glad to see this mother was not beaten down to that point. She was ready to change their lives with our help. We went over their budget and she showed me where

her ex-husband had been helping them sporadically. She said he had been abusive with her but had loved his children. She said he would give her money for the children from time to time and had never abused them. I looked around the small rental and she showed me some of the holes in the walls and broken tiles he had done while living in the home alone. I made some suggestions on how to repair these things with the teenage children’s help. I looked in the refrigerator and saw little food. The furniture they had was worn and some of it was damaged. After fully evaluating the situation and a very in-depth conversation with the mother I had an idea for a job that would suit her well. It would give them enough income to get by on their own without the fear of eviction and utility disconnection. I knew of a senior woman who was looking for a companion and someone to help with light housekeeping, laundry, cooking and driving. The pay was fair and the duties fairly stress free. This could be the answer to both women’s prayers. When I asked the mother if she would be interested in this job, at first she looked terrified. I saw a glimpse of her PTSD trying to force her into her old habits. I watched as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. A much calmer woman then looked at me and said, “I would be so grateful.” I knew the strength those few words took. I called the senior woman and set up a time for them to meet the following day. The next day the women met and hit it off immediately. I could see a few times the mother was getting nervous but was happy to see her use the techniques she was learning in therapy to get herself back on track. The women agreed she should start the following day. The senior woman understood her PTSD and was willing to help. After our help with rent and utilities, food, some household repair materials and gas for their car, this mother and children were relieved to not have the worry of pending homelessness and utility disconnection any longer. The teenage children were happy to put the materials to good use and proud of the home repairs they made. The mother was excited about having a job she actually enjoyed. She even reported her PTSD symptoms were easing as she became more confident in her ability to cope in the “real world” as she put it. The teenage children were also proud that they too had gotten jobs and were happy to help their family. The mother shared how her transformation also made her children more outgoing. She had not even realized how her PTSD, their poverty and their living conditions had all been contributing to her children being reclusive. The mother said, “My kids are so much more outgoing now. They even had friends over, which they have never done

before because they were embarrassed about how the house looked and worried about me. Since I have my job and I’m out more every day, they can see how much better I am getting.” We cannot remove the physical and mental scars that this mother will carry with her forever, but we can ease the pains of poverty she and her children are enduring right now. Just lightening someone’s load is sometimes enough to help them move forward in a positive way. We are so grateful for the poverty relief you make possible. New hydraulic cutters are up to the challenge Salem plans one for each of three fire stations By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Most people have seen devastating car crashes with vehicles sometimes crushed beyond recognition. It’s the job of rescue workers to get the victims out and treated for injuries. And sometimes, the victim can’t be safely pulled from the vehicle without adding to the injuries. In those instances, the vehicle must be removed from around the victim. Rescue crews carry an array of hydraulic equipment for that purpose. The town of Salem recently spent $5,245 for a TNT O cutter hydraulic rescue tool and bracket. The new O cutter has a PSI

of 320,000 and replaces the current O cutter, which has a PSI of 118,000, according to officials. Car manufacturers are using an alloy of boron and titanium to make rocker bars and connecting rods. Parts made with this alloy are stronger and lighter than materials used in the past. And when rescuers need to remove a victim from a car made with these alloys, stronger equipment is needed. The current O cutter with a lower PSI can be used to cut the stronger materials, but it takes more attempts and is subject to breaking during those attempts. That means more time to

rescue the accident victim. And those minutes are precious when someone is injured, officials said. The plan is to purchase one new hydraulic cutter each year until the three Salem firehouses each have one, giving each crew the ability to extract victims from cars when needed. Town of Salem Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Slover said there is no average for car crashes in which the devices are needed. Some years there my be none and some years there may 10 to 15. Slover explained, “The primary function of the vehicles will be for medical call responses by Station 1 and 2 fire/EMS personnel on emergency medical responses, saving wear and tear on the engines.” “They will also be used as auxiliary utility service such as towing boats,” he continued, “and moving equipment and material to and from scenes, fire prevention displays, and transportation as needed for personnel to trainings.”

The new vehicles will replace two older vehicles, 2003 and 2004 Ford SUVs. Both have corrosion issues, Slover said. The vehicles will be sold at auction if the town does not use them on a temporary basis. Slover estimates the cost of getting the new vehicles ready for emergency service to be about $2,500 per vehicle. “The plan is to salvage as much from the older vehicles as we can,” he said. The money for that will come from the 2015 budget.

scar “Oz” Karcher got a much different reception when he returned home Oct. 24 from Washington, D.C., than he did 64 years ago when he came back from Korea. Karcher, a U.S. Army veteran from Delavan, came into Seattle by boat from Korea in December 1951 after spending 17 months recovering and repairing war vehicles from the frigid East Asian countryside. When the ship came in to port with about 300 soldiers on board, a fire boat saluted them with water cannons, and the Red Cross served coffee to the soldiers when they disembarked. “That was all there was,” said Karcher, now 85. Karcher witnessed a much different spectacle when he disembarked from a 747 last month at General Mitchell International

Airport in Milwaukee after a trip to Washington on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. A mile-long brigade of American flags and personnel from every branch of the military saluted the 13 World War II veterans and 179 Korean War veterans as they walked from the plane and through the airport. “You could tell that they were all longtime service people by their ribbons,” Karcher said. “You felt pretty honored to have these guys come and salute you.” Behind the military personnel were nearly 3,000 friends and family members of the veterans, holding up signs welcoming their loved ones home from the day-long trip and thanking them for their service. “There were a lot of tears,” said Penny Kresl, of Delavan, one of Karcher’s six children. “A lot of them got overwhelmed.” The Karcher family alone had 22 members there to welcome Oz Karcher home. Karcher said the reception upon returning

home was the most significant – and unexpected – part of the trip for him. “When you feel you had all these people saluting you, it was kind of honoring,” Karcher said. The emotions that came with the return from the journey began earlier for Tim Mason, who accompanied Karcher on the trip as his guardian, and knew what was waiting on the tarmac. “Tim was crying, knowing what he was walking him in to,” said Sue Roberts, of Madison, Karcher’s daughter and Mason’s girlfriend. The road to D.C. The idea to sign Karcher up for the Honor Flight came from a Lions Club meeting Mason attended in Madison about two years ago. The first Honor Flight took 12 veterans to Washington, D.C., in May 2005, and flights across the country have been taking as many

veterans as possible to see the memorials of the wars they served in since then. The organization takes veterans who sign up on the trip in order of their dates of service. “They’re trying to find the people that haven’t gone because they want them to have this opportunity,” Roberts said. World War II veterans were given priority over Korean veterans, so, after applying to go on the flight, Karcher’s family waited. With each year that passed, the family also wondered if Karcher would get the opportunity to see the nation’s capital for the first time. “I was getting really worried because three years ago, he had a mild stroke,” Roberts said. She checked in with the organization and learned the names of Korean War veterans who wanted to take the trip were backed up. “They said they were still finishing World War II veterans then getting to Korean War

After graduating from Darien High School in 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as the Korean War was beginning. Karcher was in the 8th Army Div. 612th Ordinance Service Co. that was sent to Yokohama, Japan. He served there with the 612th from April 1949 to 1950 then went to the 545th Ordinance Service Co. and was promoted to staff sergeant. He served from May 1950 to July 1950 in Korea. He also played football for the Army Div. 229 Bombers.

World War II veterans still living are at least 88 years old. Karcher was 19 years old in 1950 and stationed in Japan. The Army had fashioned a group of soldiers trained to recover and repair military vehicles that were broken down or damaged in battle, Karcher said. “I think they knew the Korean

War was coming,” he said. He was sent to Korea in July 1950 – a month after the war began – with the group, called a “bastard company” because it wasn’t part of any Army division but supported 10 other companies. “Our people supported all the divisions,” he said. “Our main objective was we supported the trucking companies. Washington D.C. “Why do they all have raincoats on?” he said. “Where I was, it was freezing cold.” The Korean War Veterans Memorial was built in 1995 near the Lincoln Memorial and features 19 stainless steel statues that are 7 feet tall and wearing ponchos that appear to blow in the cold winds of Korea, according to koreanwarvetsmemorial.org. On Karcher’s trip, the group also visited World War II, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Iwo Jima memorials and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Officials urge caution for portable heater use The Illinois Conservation Police remind hunters, boaters and campers to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide produced by portable heaters and generators. As the weather cools, outdoors enthusiasts often rely on portable heating devices to stay warm during fall hunting and fishing trips. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources urges the use of carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces and recommends equipment be inspected to be sure it is operable prior to use. “Carbon monoxide detectors should also be used on your boat, cabin or in your camper. CO is colorless and odorless, and often isn’t detected until it’s too late,” said

Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. On Nov. 7, a man was hospitalized for CO poisoning after spending the night on his boat docked just off the Illinois River in Jersey County. The victim was taken by ambulance to Jersey Community Hospital and later airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital. He is expected to survive. The man’s boat had a leaky exhaust system, and the CO detector was not functioning due to a loose connection. Many carbon monoxide deaths occur during colder months when windows and doors are locked up at night leaving little or no ventilation inside. Carbon monoxide acci-

dents can happen in boat cabins because, in most cases, these areas are small enclosures, but there are other places where precautions need to be taken. Small hunting cabins, campers and hunting blinds where a kerosene heater or internal combustion engine may be used for warmth are also places where people need to take precautions. In cabins or campers that have not been used recently, check vents for leaves, nests or other obstructions. Illinois Conservation Police offer the following tips when using heating devices: • Make sure your equipment such as generators, internal combustion engines or any heater that burns petroleum products are vented and

maintained properly. • Always have a working carbon monoxide detector in any enclosure where people will be. • Always use replacement parts or components intended solely for the equipment being used. • Make sure the area you are in is ventilated at all times. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 400 people die each year in the United States from carbon monoxide poisoning, while thousands more are sickened by the gas. More than 4,000 are hospitalized. Many victims are overcome in their sleep, unaware of the elevated carbon monoxide levels in their homes.

Trees on Parade will feature gingerbread It is time to start planning entries for this year’s Gingerbread House Contest that will be held during Twin Lakes’ Trees on Parade, which will be held Dec. 4 and 5 at St. John the Evangelist Community Center in Twin Lakes. This year the Gingerbread House contest will be open to the public. Any person age 12 and older is eligible to enter. One gingerbread creation is allowed per participant or group. Creations can be houses, barns, churches, etc. It must be placed on an 18-inch by 18-inch board. Cardboard bases will not be accepted. Organizers suggest using half-inch to three-quarter-inch thick plywood. All gingerbread creations’ main components, such as roofs and walls, must be constructed of gingerbread (no graham crackers or cookies). No artificial interior materials, such as Styrofoam, may be used to construct or decorate the house. Except for the base, all materials must be edible. Nonedible materials like ribbons or figurines may only be used to decorate the base. A list of materials used, along with a title and description should be submitted with your entry. The contest fee is $10. All entries must be delivered to St. John’s between 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, and must be removed by 5 p.m. on Dec. 5. Entries not picked up will be discarded. Entries will be judged by a People’s Choice ballot based on overall appearance, difficulty, creativity and originality technique and skill. Winners will receive plaques for first, second and third place. Trees on Parade will feature 18 trees decorated by businesses and local organizations, and 22 vendors and crafters for holiday shopping. Decorated tree entries are $35. Tree must fit in a six-foot radius. Trees will be set up on Thursday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 8 p.m. and taken down Saturday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. Winning trees in three categories (Business, Junior and General) will be chosen by People’s Choice ballots. In an event that was equal parts Republican fundraiser and meet-and-greet, 2016 Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio visited Burlington Nov. 9. State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos set up the event, which served as a fundraiser for Assembly Republicans as well as for Vos himself. It also featured a roundtable discussion for a select group of 20 people, moderated by radio talk show personality Charlie

Sykes. Among those who paid $2,500 for one of the 20 seats at the roundtable were Burlington’s Frank Cannella – of Cannella Response Television – and David Lynch of Lynch auto dealerships. The $50,000 raised there went to the campaign coffers for Assembly Republicans. All money earned from photo opportunities – $100 for a photo with Vos or $500 with Rubio – and from the reception that followed went to Vos’ campaign fund. Vos said Monday evening that between 350 and 400 mostly local people attended the event. Also in attendance were about 20 legislators from across the state, including area Republican state Reps.

All the legislators had an opportunity to have their photo taken with Rubio, and got a few minutes to talk with him. Vos said that after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker chose to exit the race, it became a clear choice of whom he would support. Vos and 19 other state legislators (including Vos, August and State Sen. Van Wanggaard) endorsed Rubio in his presidential run. The reasoning, he said, has to do with Rubio’s political stands and also his upbringing. “I just think Sen. Rubio

is what you want in a candidate,” said Vos, adding that Rubio’s appearance Monday reinforced he is “not a stereotypical Republican.” “Even if you’re a Democrat, you have to respect that Sen. Rubio is a life story where you can start with humble beginnings and make it all the way to the White House,” Vos added. Vos explained that Rubio’s parents were immigrants who worked blue-collar jobs. He put himself through college and law school. As an example, Vos said Rubio made a point of stopping to have his photo taken not only with the people who paid. “He’s just that kind of person,” Vos said. “I have been

involved in the Republican Party for more than 35 years. I have watched candidates come and go. “The candidates I am attracted to are hopeful, pas-

sionate, articulate and have a plan to do things that I support when they win,” he added. “As I look at the field, Sen. Rubio certainly embodies all of those traits.”

Look out for the Secret Sister scam, BBB warns serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Also, I’m fairly certain that they have not considered the legality of participating.” In addition to the loss of money in buying a gift, Bernas noted: “Prosecution for participating in pyramid schemes is determined by local authorities. However, the Federal Trade Commission has occasionally prosecuted pyramid schemes as deceptive trade practices, or fraud. And those convicted have had to pay fines and or spend time in prison.” This holiday season the Secret Sister scam is not the only danger lurking on social media sites. Consumers should also be careful and not let their guard down to avoid being tricked by crooks who take advantage of the trust that we place in our online “friends.” Some of the ways that consumers are ripped off on social media sites include: • Fake Profiles – Be careful who you “friend.” If you friend someone you do not know, you will be giving them access to your postings, personal information and your list of

friends as well. Posts from these friends may contain links to other pages that will infect your computer with malware, if clicked, or trick you into visiting other scam sites. • Hacked Profiles of Friends – If a friend’s status states they just got a free tablet by answering a few questions, their page may have been hacked. Do not click on any links you find in the post as that may lead to identity theft. • Message Scams – Be careful if you post questions asking for help in finding a particular gift and receive a message from someone you don’t know offering to sell you the product. This could be a scam. Do not send any money until you have verified who the person is and set up a method to receive the product – before full payment is made. When going online to shop or simply to check your email, Bernas urges people to treat all messages with a measured amount of caution. “Don’t assume someone is sending you something simply to be nice,” the BBB president explains. “Unfortunately in today’s

digital world, the optimism we all like to see and hope for needs to be tempered with a healthy dose of skepticism. Ask yourself: Why am I receiving this? Do I know this person or company? What could happen if I open it or provide the information they request?” As more people are online during the holidays, cyber-crimes in general tend to increase. The BBB recommends consumers watch carefully for these email scams: • Ransomware Scam – A new type of ransomware called “cryptolocker” has been identified. The virus sent via email, when downloaded will encrypt the contents of the victim’s computer and until the ransom is paid, the files will remain locked. • Bank Account Scam – An email claims your bank account has been compromised and asks that you reply to the email and provide personal information. The goal is to capture your account number, address, social security number and other information. • Charity Scam –

The “Secret Sister” gift exchange making the rounds on a number of social media sites is an example of a holiday scam, according to the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. It is essentially an elaborate new twist on the old “chain letters.” But the Better Business Bureau warns those who choose to participate could find that they are involved in an illegal pyramid scheme. Basically, the Secret Sister Gift Exchange promises that if you send one gift valued at $10 you will receive 36 gifts in return. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, gift chains aren’t just mathematically impossible; they’re also illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants. “Those who get involved often do so thinking that the amount needed to participate is so small it’s worth the risk if they’ll receive gifts worth maybe a couple hundred dollars,” said Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau
