Obregon pleads not guilty He waives his right preliminary hearing

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Andrew Obregon, accused of 32 charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday in Kenosha County Intake Court. The 32-year-old, who allegedly went on a 22-day crime spree, including multiple vehicle thefts, pleaded not guilty to all charges and was bound over for trial by Court Commissioner Jon Mason. At his initial bond hearing Nov. 4, Obregon allegedly confessed to 30 of the 32 charges in the 29-page criminal complaint. The two charges he did not confess to are attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the murder of Tywon Anderson and attempted kidnapping, stemming from an Oct. 13 car-jacking incident in Brighton. “You do understand…that if you waive the preliminary hearing, you can’t come back into this courtroom?” Mason asked Obregon. If convicted on all charges, Obregon would face a maximum of life imprisonment plus 439 years. “He is aware of all those charges and the maximum penalties associated with those charges,” said Kristyne Watson, Obregon’s court-ap-

pointed public defender. Obregon’s spree allegedly began Sept. 21, when Obregon’s purported drug dealer, Anderson, was reported missing by Anderson’s sister, Tahitha. Five days later, authorities discovered Anderson’s remains in the 14400 block of County Road A in the town of Paris. Following discovery, Obregon allegedly eluded Kenosha County and Racine County authorities on five occasions leading up to his capture in Illinois Oct. 13. From Sept. 26-Oct. 13, he allegedly stole up to seven vehicles, burglarized Countryside Mini Market in Bristol and committed an armed robbery of Speedway gas station on Highway 50 and Interstate 94 in Pleasant Prairie, according to the criminal complaint. Two vehicle thefts allegedly were from Oct. 2-6 at GT Motorsports in Racine, where he was an employee seven years ago. Obregon was formally charged on both counts in Racine County Circuit Court Wednesday. Obregon’s last vehicle theft occurred at a Brighton residence, where he is accused of beating a woman, necessitating Flight For Life helicopter transport to Froed-

Sheriff launches probe of bookkeeper She is also focus of investigation at Wheatland School

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

The Kenosha County Sheriff Department has begun an investigation into the Salem Grade School’s theft complaint against former bookkeeper Mary Anderson. “They are gathering information at this time,” District Administrator Dave Milz said of the Sheriff’s Office. The district asked the sheriff to launch the investigation Oct. 23. A forensic audit conducted on behalf of the district over the summer alleges that Anderson paid herself more than $17,000 in unsupported overtime over the past five years along with more than $1,000 in other funds missing. The auditors discovered that Anderson’s claims for overtime hours were higher than the average and they discovered that Anderson’s overtime occurred or was higher in weeks when she had days off for illness, vacation or training time. She also paid $19,500 penalty to the IRS for not meeting certain federal reporting requirements, the audit contends. The audit was done to see if the missing amounts could be recovered under the district’s insurance policy and Milz said

Marty McGinley contacted the Sheriff’s Department, investigators were unable to give a timeline because of the volume of cases. Wheatland filed a complaint with the Sheriff’s Office on May 22. McGinley explained in detail that, “Wheatland contends that Mrs. Anderson fraudulently absconded with $11,607.05 through improper payroll payments, fraudulent reimbursements, cash deposits, and misuse of the district procurement card.” “To this point,” McGinley continued, “there have been additional fees associated with the fraud for auditing and consultation with an attorney of approximately $8,000.” McGinley said he did have help from an auditor, but originally found some obvious inconsistencies on the procurement card statement when going through normal checks and balances. “Then I found that she had forged my signature on some previous reports,” he contends. “It all unraveled from that point, and took several weeks to get to the final figure. The Wheatland still waiting The last time Wheatland insurance company will cover Center District Administrator a portion of the loss.” he’s confident that it can. Milz explained that it appeared to him that even a few years prior, to current business manager Susan Jarvis, Anderson requested raises in pay. Some of her requests were not honored. Milz said it appeared to him that Anderson was looking for career advancement and when the opportunity came up to be a shared bookkeeper for Randal and Wheatland grade schools, she applied. But after Anderson left, Milz said, “things weren’t adding up” and that triggered the forensic audit. Even though Milz said he is confident the missing money will be replaced under the insurance policy, the board is concerned that these are public funds. “The board did have option not to move forward but without hesitation wanted to move forward,” Milz said. Anderson’s son-in-law, Nick Pauloni, who sits on the board as treasurer, did not take part in the board discussion of how to handle the issue of involving the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff urges residents to update contacts

Prompted by the recent manhunt for Andrew Obregon and impending winter weather, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department last week urged residents to keep an updated emergency contacts list. Sheriff’s officials stated communication is essential in times of emergencies. “Sheriff (David) Beth encourages Kenosha County residents to have an up-todate contact list for those you may need to reach during a disaster or emergency and es-

tablishing alternate methods of communication in case traditional means are not available,” a news release issued by the department said. In event of voice service disruptions, the release suggested text messaging, noting it takes less bandwidth to deliver. “Also, calling long distance may be easier than making a local call,” the release said. “Ask a friend or family member to be your out of town contact.” To subscribe to free alerts

from the county, visit the Kenosha County website, click on Sheriff, and then Emergency Management. On that link, go to AlertSense.Com to sign up. Through these messages, residents receive a short notices about potential dangers and hazards. Emergency messages are delivered directly to cell phones. For more information, go to Kenosha County Emergency Management, or the ReadyWisconsin website at readywisconsin.wi.gov.

The time is now to help

Mother struggles after son steals from her Dear W.C., I have a widowed lady friend that is having a very difficult time. She would never ask for help herself. She is a lovely woman and always helping others. Now she needs help. Her son recently came back to town. He has caused much heartbreak for my friend over the years. He was involved in some very bad situations and has stolen from her in the past. My lady friend tried to tell him he was not welcome at her apartment. She lives in a senior citizen low-income housing complex. He did not listen to her and just showed up at her door anyway. Being the good loving mother and trusting person that she is, she let him in. She did not realize he had forged one of her checks and stolen cash out of her purse until a few days later. He even took her wedding ring she had sitting on top of her dresser and most likely pawned it. My lady friend is so hurt by his betrayal again. She called the police but her son is nowhere to be found. She is so worried over not being able to pay her rent or utilities. I am a senior citizen that lives in the same apartment complex as this lovely woman. I too live on a very tight budget so I am not able to help her. We read your article in the newspaper each week and this had me thinking that maybe The Time is Now could help.

By

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

I handed her some tissues and asked a few questions about the sons past. He had indeed been in and out of trouble most his life. The friend had not exaggerated about the extent of the sons dishonest and abusive past. After a long conversation that I knew was very painful for the woman to reiterate I asked about her present financial state. The woman showed me her check book and her bank statement showing the check that had cleared. It was not a large check by most people’s standards but for a senior woman living very frugally on social security it may as well have been a million dollars. It was lost money she just could not get back or every recover from. Her son was long gone without a trace so the odds of finding him and the money and ring he had stolen over six weeks past were not likely to happen. This lovely senior woman’s only hope would be The Time Is Now to Help. How could we not ease her fears of losing her senior apartment and having her utilities disconnected? We would help this woman pay her overdue rent and utilities. We would also provide her some additional food and toiletries as she had been cutting back on these things to try and save enough for her bills. The entire time we had been having our conversation the senior gentleman had been sitting quietly watching everything. When he saw his lady friend smile when I showed her where we would be there to help, I saw him smile for the first time since we met. He said, “Excuse me but I have to say this is just like reading one of your newspaper

columns. I can’t believe I am witnessing your good works with my own eyes and ears.” I answered him, “This is all thanks to you too. We know this woman here would not have asked for help herself. She is lucky to have such a good friend as you to know what she needs.” I saw them both look at each other with a mutual admiration. I noticed how occasionally they had held hands and caught each other’s eye. I said to the gentleman, “So are you going to ask this lovely lady here out on a date?” They both looked surprised as the gentleman answered, “I would love to take her out for coffee if she would let me.” I looked at the woman and said, “I think you at least owe this handsome man here a cup of coffee.” We all laughed at that. Several weeks later I paid a visit to the senior woman’s apartment again. I was not surprised to find the senior gentleman there as well. They both greeted me with a hug. The senior woman told me how much better she was now feeling and how she had put aside her grief over her son and his betrayal. She said, “I will never let him back in my life again unless I am sure he has changed. It could be years and I hope I live to see the day but it is in God’s hands now. Thanks to The Time Is Now to Help and all the good people that support the work you do, my life has completely changed. Not only is my financial stress gone but you also showed me how to let the other stresses go too. I can’t control my son’s poor choices or my daughter’s health but I can pray for them. That I can do. Thank you for showing me that.” We all hugged again and

after a final review of her budget we were able to say our goodbyes with much happier hearts than the first time we met. The suffering and pain that are removed due to you is monumental in our work. God Bless you for your support of our mission and all our good works we accomplish together.

showed me inside. He knocked on the door of his lady friend’s apartment. It was opened in a few moments by a senior woman. I noticed how her face lit up when she saw her friend there, but she looked confused when she saw me as well. After being introduced she said, “I know who you are. I read about the people you help in the newspaper. How come you are here?” I said to her, “Well, you have a very good friend here that is worried about you. He wrote me a letter in your behalf. Would you like to talk about what he wrote in the letter?” The woman looked embarrassed and turned her face away. In a moment she said, “How can I talk about something so embarrassing to you, a stranger?” I told her, “People tell me I’m easy to talk to.” She smiled at my attempt to make an uncomfortable situation a little easier. The senior woman led me and her friend to the small table in the efficiency apartment. I looked at the older furniture. I could tell she took good care of her belongings. There were a few family photos. I asked her about the photos and she told me the story behind Dear readers, each one. Tucking in for a lifetime By

JILL PERTLER Columnist

I asked a friend about this recently. Did she take the everyday for granted, too? Without hesitation she gave a knowing nod and I felt some sense of relief, I guess, at not being the only one. She didn’t have to say a word. Her nod and expression could have filled pages. They were the actions of someone who toiled for years at parenting only to discover that once the job starts to get a little easier your duties are outsourced and your skills no longer needed. At least not on a daily (or hourly) basis. It is bittersweet, their continually increasing independence – that they are growing up and away. I thought I’d forever be buying clothing from the children’s section. That toys would always be a part of Christmas. That chocolate milk would always be a mainstay in our fridge and sippy cups would forever prevail. All things change. I should be celebrating. Some days I do. Other days, I see Barney or Big Bird on TV and remember when we used to watch and those sing-songy melodies got

Junior Miss Antioch, Aliya Rhodes, 13, double-checks basket contents during the Antioch, Ill., Lions Thanksgiving food basket event at the Piggly Wiggly, 460 Orchard St., in Antioch on Nov. 21. The store again served as the base of operations in what has become an Antioch tradition with the Lions Club donating all of the food as well as making the deliveries the following day. Rhodes was among the more than 25 volunteers who filled a total of 76 large baskets containing bread, canned goods, eggs, and fresh fruit and vegetables, among other items with destinations for next-day deliveries being needy families throughout the village and Antioch Township. The Lions and Piggly Wiggly will reprise the effort for Christmas.

Maybe because they want to themselves. Maybe because they need groceries and gas and a hot meal in their bellies. Probably a little of each, but for sure the latter. And that’s OK. They still need a few things from mom and dad. Thank goodness. And we still want them to come home. Thank goodness.

It’s Friday night at 11 p.m. – the end of a particularly hectic week and I am tired. But it is OK, because I can go to bed, thank goodness. They don’t need me to tuck them in anymore, at least not on Fridays, when they outlast me and sometimes end up tucking me in because it’s been a long week and they are usually kind to their mom. This tucking, while sweet, is by no means guaranteed. They have places to go and things to do most Friday nights. Such is the life when you are a teenager or slightly beyond. On the best nights (my viewpoint, not theirs) they are all home under one roof, but that doesn’t happen often. It wasn’t long ago that was the norm. They’d be home, in their beds, tucked in by 8 because they were little and tired. Looking back I suppose I took it for granted. I took lots of things for granted. Them being home and in their beds. Having dinner together every night. Sitting with them over a bowl of cereal in the morning or ice cream in the evening. The security of car seats. Snuggling together on the couch watching Nemo. Reading “Go Dog Go,” over and over. Little things. Everyday things that seemed everyday until they weren’t anymore.

Every piece in the building has artistic appeal, and it was a monumental rejuvenation and repurposing of a property.”

Gretch and Mark Hladish, owners of Rosewood, have been entertaining fans in the area for years and said performing in their own venue is a dream come true. The bar in the theater at Rosewood features a stained glass window that used to be on display in another location at Millie’s.

ROSEWOOD BRINGS NEW LIFE, BRANSON-STYLE ENTERTAINMENT TO FORMER MILLIE’S By Michael S. Hoey CORRESPONDENT

O

riginally scheduled to open in May 2014, Rosewood finally opened its doors on the site of the former’s Millie’s Restaurant near Delavan Lake on Oct. 9. Owners Mark and Gretch Hladish, who made performing at Millie’s a staple of their entertainment business, have transformed the building into a premier venue for music and dining. “The vision of the property owners was grander than ours,” Mark Hladish said about the delay in opening. “They wanted to completely rejuvenate the space, and it took a little longer to make it reality.” Millstead Inc. owns the building and property at 2484 Highway O, and Mark and Gretch Hladish own the business they said they believe will fit nicely with the touristdriven economy of the area. “The sum total of all the improvements and potential made us realize putting off the opening would allow us to offer so much more,” Mark said. The former Millie’s building was completely gutted with much of what was inside sold at auction. The building was also deteriorating. Entire walls had to be reset in new foundations, all new plumbing and electrical systems were installed and the roof and exterior siding were replaced. Much of the interior of the building was renovated and repurposed. About half of the 20,000 square feet makes up Rosewood. The remaining space is for lease with a restaurant and an English pub as future business possibilities, said Gretch Hladish. The former Millie’s gift shop at the back of the building was cleared of vertical beams and transformed into an intimate cabaret-style theatre with premium Bose sound system and a nearly floor-to-ceiling video board. A new bar was put in the back of the room

with a stained glass window that was part of the former Millie’s and the Hladishs said they are proud that local contractors did nearly all of the work on the building. In addition to the 140-seat theater, Rosewood offers two spaces for dining, weddings and private events that can seat 200 people, a shopping village that includes holdovers The Stitchery and Everything Homespun, two new Rosewood galleries and shops, two renovated gazebos for weddings and two apartments for rent. Gretch Hladish said a farmhouse on the property could someday be turned into an arts colony. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the work,” Mark Hladish said. “Every piece in the building has artistic appeal, and it was a monumental rejuvenation and repurposing of a property.” The primary focus of Rosewood, the Hladishs said, is entertainment, but the dining is important as well. Chef John Schnupp, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, his wife, Joy, and their sons, Jesse and Jacob, provide a fresh farm-to-table dining experience with meat and produce from farms no more than 200 miles away. Mark said the only freezer in the kitchen is for ice and ice cream. Gretch said guests can come for brunch and a show or purchase show tickets alone. The inspiration for Rosewood, Gretch Hladish said, was a strong desire for regional arts in the area. Mark and Gretch Hladish have been performing together since 2004, and 40 percent of their business was at Millie’s. When Millie’s closed, they had to consider their options. Mark Hladish said owning their own venue was not on their radar screen at first, but no venues in the area were interested in what they wanted to offer on a regular basis. Gretch said once the idea for Rosewood formed, they needed help making it reality. “The investors were excited about it,” she said.

“It was a group of people who believed this idea was overdue for this area,” Mark Hladish said. Rosewood will not just be a showcase for the Hladishs. It will also provide a physical home for the Midwest Artists Network, an organization the Hladishs created 10 years ago that offers performers a way to collaborate. Unlike venues with set schedules, Rosewood’s business is driven by group sales and is event-driven. Mark Hladish said the number of senior tours that pass through the Midwest offer many opportunities for a stop in the area. Tour groups see what Rosewood has to offer and book a date. Whatever space remains for that show is made available to the public, many times in the afternoon during the week. People interested in attending a show just need to check the Rosewoodwi.com website to see what shows are available. The Hladishs plan to perform about 150 cabaret shows a year and offer 12 theme shows that will include holidays. The music combined with the video wall and production value provide the only Branson-style theater in the area, Mark Hladish said. “It is a unique intimate listening space to see a show,” Mark said. “It is more like a living room than a concert hall.” Other performers will also be invited to perform at Rosewood, and many different styles of music will be offered. Mark Hladish said the area has many seasonal events that offer good music, but they are for short periods and dependent on good weather. Rosewood is open year-round and indoors. “We want to provide good family entertainment without breaking the bank,” Gretch Hladish said. Another layer of the business includes wedding planning. Rosewood is not just a venue for a wedding, it can coordinate everything needed to provide a wedding. Rosewood also offers a venue for corporate

team-building events and presentations and culinary and wine-tasting events. The Hladishs say they could not make Rosewood a reality without their team. The Schnupps take care of the dining, Jeff Iverson is the bar manager, his wife, Beth, is the wedding planner, Debbie Slawson is the retail manager, Pat Bladow is the group sales and private events coordinator, and Shawn Slawson is the technical producer. Slawson got a degree in film at the Fullsail Visual Arts School in Florida and, Mark Hladish said “got it” when he pitched what the Hladishs wanted to do with Rosewood. “The production was a far bigger undertaking than one person could do, and I needed some outside expertise,” he said. Hladish said the video production of each show is an extension of Slawson’s creative expression. The Hladishs have overcome the usual challenges in opening a new business. They also overcame Mark Hladish’s open heart and bypass surgery almost two years ago. “You can’t imagine what it felt like to get the key to the front door, even in the demolition phase,” Mark Hladish said. “It was exhilarating.” He said his parents used to bring him to Millie’s for breakfast when he was a child, and he was married in the building. “There is a lot of history in this building for a lot of people,” he said. “We inherited a legacy property.” Hladish said knowing so many people share a history there is a unique privilege, and the magic goes on. “People want to come back and revisit places like that, and we want to be a part of that,” he said. “We want people to have an experience that makes them want to come back.” “This is a way to allow the place to continue to have a heartbeat,” Gretch Hladish said. “It’s not just a business.”
