How to have a
championship caliber lawn Creating a stadium-caliber lawn doesn’t have to take a lot of time, money or effort. This summer, follow these simple steps and tend to your natural turf in the morning and evening to create a yard that is championship caliber.
RAKE
Raking a lawn removes dead grass and other debris, allowing you to control thatch and see bare or worn areas that need attention. It also permits new, young grass to grow more easily and increases soil contact when seeding.
TEST YOUR SOIL
Good soil is one of the essentials of a healthy lawn. A soil test is simple and inexpensive (do-it-yourself kits are available at local garden centers) and it provides valuable information about current pH levels. Simple amendments like lime or sulfur can be added to neutralize overly acidic or alkaline soil and help grass thrive.
AERATE
Older or heavily trafficked lawns can suffer from soil compaction. A core aerator, with hollow tines, will pull small
plugs of soil out of the ground, allowing increased movement of water, nutrients and oxygen. Aeration can also increase the soil contact with new seeds and promote new growth. You can rent an aerator or hire a professional to do the work for you.
SEED
Early morning or evening summer hours offer cooler, optimal conditions for establishing new lawns or repairing thin or bare patches in existing lawns. Turf specialists at a garden store or local university extension office can help select the right seed for your area and usage. They can also point you toward the seed closest to your existing grass or suggest alternatives for problem areas. After the seeding is finished, water lightly, but regularly, keeping the reseeded areas damp until the new grass grows in.
CONTROL WEEDS
Healthy lawns essentially control weeds by squeezing them out. However, if crabgrass or dandelions invade, herbicides may help. Consult a garden specialist about which herbicide is right for your lawn and how to use it. Applying
a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring before weed grass emerges can reduce problems down the line. If you’ve applied seed, keep in mind that herbicides can kill it, so use a product that will not affect new growth. For dandelions, digging them up is often effective, but a broadleaf herbicide may be applied.
MAINTAIN THE MOWER
Make sure your mower is in optimal condition with a lawn mower tune-up. Annual service should keep it running smoothly and should include changing the oil, changing the spark plug, swapping out or cleaning the air filter, and sharpening the blade. Most lawns are ready for cutting when the grass reaches a three-inch height, although newly seeded or recently overseeded lawns should be mowed closer to two inches until the grass is established. Mow with a frequency that allows for cutting less than one-third the height of the grass. An easy-to-follow rule: let grass grow no taller than three inches and trim to no shorter than two inches. You can find more lawn care tips at www.weseedamerica.com. (BPT)

Fun ideas to make your summer entertaining a hit LAKE LIVING
The sweet days of summer signal a long awaited transition for outdoor living. Combine food, family and friends with fresh ideas, and the possibilities for summer entertaining are endless. “There is something so magical about taking a meal outside in the warm weather,” says designer Julie Robbins. “Sip tea from a porcelain cup in the late afternoon sun. Bring out vintage grill plates for a barbecue at the beach. Dine under the stars with lanterns and fireflies. Savor the season, because the memories will last far longer than the summer.” Robbins leads design and entertaining seminars at Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. She offers many ideas to make the summer memorable: Don’t sweat the ants Whether a big bash in the park or a quilt spread under your favorite backyard tree, picnics are hugely popular this summer. “These moments are too precious for paper plates,” Robbins says. “When possible, opt for fine or casual dinnerware over disposable plates and cups. It’s better for the environment and elevates your event from everyday to unforgettable.” Robbins suggests mixing glass plates in fun summer colors with your dinnerware to create seasonal flair. If you’re hesitant to use your dinnerware because you’re worried about breaking a plate or glass, use fast food drink caddies to pack your glasses and layer cloth napkins between plates. Place a newspaper at the bottom of your basket or tote for added cushion; Robbins says you can then wrap your dirty dishes in newspaper for the ride home. This will protect your basket or tote from food residue and preserve your table settings for your next event. Another great tip, use a glass out of your cabinet to transport and hold utensils. Robbins also suggests placing cupcake liners over glasses then punching a hole in the liner and inserting a drinking straw to keep ants

and other insects from getting into beverages. Terrific tapas Planning a tapas-like gathering filled with finger foods, appetizers and snacks lends itself to your backyard or patio and is a great event for mingling. “Canapé plates, dip bowls and cheese trays are perfect for this type of entertaining,” says Replacements’ Product Marketing Manager Keith Winkler. “These pieces are not only stackable, they’re small enough that your guests can easily carry them around. Additionally, stemless wine glasses are perfect for outdoor gatherings because you set them down almost any place and they won’t tip over. You can find some really fun stemless wines made by Waterford and Riedel. Glass beverage dispensers are also very popular for summer entertaining. With these, you can mix up lemonade, sangria or create your own signature drink that guests can serve themselves. Godinger offers some really trendy beverage dispensers, while Homer Laughlin is producing them in fun Fiesta colors.” A hot design tip this summer, head to the salvage store and buy an inexpensive old door you can paint and prop on saw horses to use as an outdoor table. This not only creates a fun look, but it’s a great conversation starter at gatherings. Fabulous al fresco Regardless of whether you’re planning a casual cookout or a more formal alfresco meal, trends show more of us plan to entertain outdoors this summer. Robbins suggests using serving pieces that are both fun and functional. “Alternative metal serving pieces are perfect for a picnic or patio because they’re nearly indestructible,” says Robbins. “These serving pieces can be warmed or chilled to help maintain the temperature of your foods. Manufacturers like Lenox, Arthur Court and Wilton Armetale offer seasonal shapes

Dining outdoors doesn’t have to mean paper plates and plastic cups. Using fine china makes a picnic unforgettable.
and pieces.” As an added touch to summer gatherings, Robbins suggests finding new uses for your dinnerware, like using iced tea or ice cream glasses to create small floral arrangements
or filling pitchers or compotes with flowers from your garden to use as centerpieces. For more summer entertaining tips and ideas, visit Replacements’ Facebook page.

Cooking tricks that add bold flavor to healthy foods Warm weather and fresh fare go hand in hand. While healthy foods dominate the summer months, too often people fall into meal ruts where all they eat are simple salads and grilled chicken. Nutritious foods don’t have to be boring foods, though, because it’s easy to add pizzazz with a few clever twists. Citrus marinades Fish and poultry are quality low-fat sources of protein but can come up short in flavor. Fortunately, it’s simple to enhance lackluster chicken breasts or bland salmon with citrus. Think beyond lemon and lime and try more exotic citrus varieties like blood orange, kumquat, Satsuma and tangerine. Marinate and brush on the juices before cooking, or grill your grub with a few citrus slices directly on top. The eyewidening fresh citrus flavors will take your fish and poultry to new heights.
Fantastic feta Think you need to give up cheese to be healthy? Think again. Feta is a lowercalorie option that packs incredible flavor into any dish. Nikos Feta, made by Certified Master Cheesemakers, has a classic taste and texture that makes it the perfect addition to boring salads. But don’t stop there – drape a slice of feta across bite-size snacks or add crumbles to favorite side dishes for Mediterranean flavor that leaves you satisfied. For more ideas, visit www.nikosfeta. com/Recipes. Grilled fruit Fresh fruit is abundant during the warmer months and provides plenty of healthy vitamins and nutrients. Instead of always eating it fresh, sink your teeth into new fruit flavor when
you try grilling your favorite varieties. Lightly grilling fruit triggers the sugars to start caramelizing, which brings out rich, sweet flavors. Bananas, pineapple, peaches and even cantaloupe are great options. Cut them in half or chop into bite-size pieces and skewer before grilling. Infused waters Nutritionists agree that good old H2O is the best thing to drink to stay hydrated, but after a while plain water gets boring. Add a splash of healthy flavor to water by infusing it yourself. Lemon and lime add zest, but you can experiment with all sorts of flavor enhancements, such as cucumber, apple, grapefruit, berries and mint. Keep a pitcher in the fridge with water and your favorite sliced fruits and you’ll always have a healthy drink on hand.
Trendy spices Nothing adds kick to a bland dish like a touch of spice. If you prefer a little heat and a whole lot of flavor, it’s time to add harissa to your regular cooking routine. This Tunisian hot chili pepper paste has a bold flavor profile that’s delicious with chicken, eggs and even when used as a sandwich spread. Some food insiders claim harissa will be the next Sriracha, so you can be ahead of the curve by stocking a few cans in your pantry. Want to try a few recipes that include several of these flavor-boosting ideas? The following is sure to inspire. Learn more about feta and other wholesome recipes by visiting www. facebook.com/NikosFeta, where you can enter a contest to win a trip to Hawaii to attend the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.

Four ways to add ‘WOW’ to your outdoor living space Turning your backyard into an outdoor living oasis can be a tough project to start. Between product choices and design ideas, planning your ideal outdoor space can mean a lot of research and time at the local home improvement store. To simplify your project, many companies are integrating their outdoor living products, creating collections that are specifically designed to work together. Here are four ways you can take advantage of these bundled systems and create a beautiful and inviting space in your own backyard:

Apples, broccoli, cherries, almonds – they all have something in common that may surprise you. Besides the fact that they may be in your kitchen right now, each one of these foods is available thanks to the honeybee and other pollinators. In fact, about one-third of the human food supply depends on bees and other pollinators. Chances are, honeybees have a hand in producing some of your favorite foods. And with all of their hard work, bees need to eat, too. However, bees are struggling to find adequate, diverse food sources due to habitat loss. Recently, the White House launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge to create ways for everyone to support the issue and increase forage. With a global population expected to rise to more than 9 billion people by 2050, 70 percent more food will need to be produced. This means we all have to pitch in to help feed the bees so they can continue to produce the fruits, nuts and vegetables that people need for a healthy diet. Three Elkhorn area skiers perform with Tommy Bartlett Show in the Wisconsin Dells By Kellen Olshefski STAFF WRITER
T
hree Elkhorn area water skiers are making a big splash this summer up in the dells doing what they love. Marc Meike, 43, his step-daughter Cassidy Winkler, 15, and Mackenzie Rhyan have all taken center stage performing with the internationally known Tommy Bartlett Show in the Wisconsin Dells. Best of all, for all three of them, their transition into the professional waterskiing world all started right here in Elkhorn with the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers. Marc Meike Marc Meike currently serves as the show’s lead skier and the assistant show director, doing everything from boat driving and barefoot skiing to jumping. “I do everything,” he said. “My favorite part is back barefooting and being able to drive the race boat.” Meike said skiing with and growing up with the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers was what got both him and Winkler to where they are now. Meike, who said he was born and raised into the water skiing culture, just like his stepdaughter, learning from his parents and grandparents at a young age. “The first ski tournament I ever skied in, my grandfather was in, and that was when I was 6-years-old,” he said. “It’s been a family thing and that’s what makes it so special to me.” Meike said he skied with amateur ski teams, such as the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers until he went professional at the age of 16. Meike said he could speak for both he and Winkler in saying as soon as they started skiing with an amateur team, skiing professionally was in their sights. Meike said having skied for more than 20 years, he got his name out in the industry, which allowed him the opportunity to ski with the Tommy Bartlett Show. Having skied with the Tommy Bartlett Show for 11 years now, Meike said he can definitively say it’s one of the best places he’s skied in his career. “It’s not like working for a theme park like Sea World,” he said. “This is more of a family-like thing up here.” Meike said it’s the general atmosphere, the love from upper management, the people and the Wisconsin Dells keep him returning year after year. “It’s just an amazing place to work,” he said. “It’s definitely one of my favorite places and I’ve been skiing all over the world.” Meike said he enjoys performing in front of the large crowds and the night shows are

some of his favorite, performing under the light of spotlight, something which he said is uncommon for most ski shows. Cassidy Winkler Cassidy Winkler, who participates in everything from pyramids to doubles, said she enjoys doubles a lot and enjoys swiveling, though it makes her nervous because she doesn’t like to fall. Winkler said she picks up on a lot of things fast and is working on jumping and barefooting as a water skier. Winkler said skiing with the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers was a great learning experience that helped her get to where she is today. Winkler said she began going up to watch Meike ski in the Tommy Bartlett show at the age of 5 and by 2009, at about the age of 9, she began doing a few shows with Meike for fun. As the years went on, she kept skiing more and more with the Tommy Bartlett Show and now being 15, she could be officially hired on this season. While she said it’s a lot more exciting now, she does feel a bit more pressure now that she’s being paid to ski to ski as well. Winkler said each year it’s the learning experience that keeps bringing her back. “Everything I learn from all of the girls and everything I’ve learned from Marc, it’s just a great atmosphere to learn in,” she said. Having grown up with the Tommy Bartlett Show, Winkler said the large crowds don’t bother her and she finds it fun to not only see their faces, but meet with fans afterwards. “Everyone’s so excited and I like that,” she said. MacKenzie Rhyan MacKenzie Rhyan said she started skiing at a very young age. “My dad would take me skiing in his arms … he would carry me,” she said. “I • see

could water ski when I was two or three and I could slalom by the time I was 5.” Rhyan said skiing with the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers was instrumental in her journey to becoming a professional skier, as many of the acts she does she could only do with a club team previously. “I wouldn’t have been able to ski professionally if I didn’t ski with them,” she said. While she admits she never pictured herself as a professional water skier, she hopes to continue for as long as she can, dependent upon what her postcollege life is like. However, she said she does want to apply to ski professionally in Germany in 2017 for a year. Rhyan said she used to come up to watch the shows, as her dad is a good friend of Meike, and in 2013 she was given the opportunity to ski in the show. When she applied last summer, she said she was offered a fill-in position and after filling in more and more at the end of last season, she was offered a full-season contract this year. Today, Rhyan performs all of the female acts, including barefoot, ballet, jumping, swiveling, conventional and pyramid. But what’s more amazing is the feat she’s taken on this year. This year, Rhyan became the first and only female performer with the Tommy Bartlett Show to take on the FlyBoard, a sort of hover board propelled by water. With water shooting out of her bindings, Rhyan said she gets to do flips and dolphin dives in the show, all through maneuvering the board with her legs. “It came to me pretty naturally,” she said. “I think it’s awesome. I want to be able to do everything in the show, girl or guy acts. I want to be very versatile and beneficial for the Tommy Bartlett Show.” Rhyan said while performing in front of large crowds doesn’t phase her anymore. “It’s weird when the stadium’s not packed,” she said. “I’m more nervous if I know two people in the crowd than if it’s a stadium filled with people I don’t know.”

drafts. To properly insulate, replace old windows and doors with more energy efficient options, such as those made by Pella, including triple-pane glass, and add extra insulation to the walls, roof and basement. Make energy-efficient choices Inefficient appliances can cause a spike in your gas, water and electric usage. For a simple change, choose LED bulbs for all your light fixtures. To conserve even more energy, opt in for high-efficiency upgrades for your larger appliances, like refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes dryers, and install water conserving bathroom fixtures to help cut down your home’s overall water usage. Maximize natural light When you’re able to rely on natural light for most of the day, the cost of your electric bill decreases. If you’re renovating, think about ways you can incorporate new window openings to increase the amount of natural light your home is currently receiving. If you’re building, think about incorporating an open floor plan with lots of windows to maximize the flow of natural light from room to room. Design it to last Trends come in and out of style quickly. For the larger architectural features of your home, choose design elements that will stand the test of time – reducing the likelihood of another renovation. Leave the trendy design choices to smaller decor pieces that can easily (and inexpensively) be switched out when it’s time for a change. The right home project not only benefits the home itself but all of the people who live in it, including anyone with asthma and allergies. Before you start your project, consider what you can do to improve your home for them as well. Doing so will have everyone breathing more easily and loving your home even more.
Home renovation tips
that will have asthma and allergy sufferers breathing easy This is the peak season for do-ityourself projects, and maybe you already have your tape measure in hand, ready to tackle a bathroom remodel, open up the floor plan or finally reimagine that unfinished basement. There are plenty of considerations to take into account with any project, including space, budget and your desired results. But you also need to think about the people who will be enjoying this space with you, especially if any of them suffer from allergies or asthma. Whether you undertake the project yourself or you hire a professional, each project has the potential to make life easier for the allergy and asthma sufferers living in your home. To help you create the best environment for them, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America offers these helpful tips from its asthma and allergy friendly Certification Program:
Shut the door on bad cabinets
If you’re looking to add or replace your cabinets, you may be considering common options like pressed wood, particleboard or composite boards. These materials, however, often release high levels of volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde. To make your new
cabinets more suitable for the asthma and allergy suffers in your home, talk to manufacturers about low-VOC options instead.
Keep the moisture out
Mold and mildew is a common trigger and can make breathing difficult for asthma and allergy sufferers. These hazards grow from excess moisture in your home, which comes in through the doors or windows. New windows offer energy-saving benefits, and updating the weather stripping on your windowsills and doors can reduce the presence of moisture – thus reducing mold and mildew concerns.
Get serious about your air
No one appreciates indoor air quality more than allergy and asthma sufferers. An updated heating, ventilation and air conditioning system can improve each breath everyone takes. If you plan to update your home’s HVAC system, opt for one with a replaceable or washable filter-making it easier to control the indoor air quality. This is also a great time to make sure air ducts in your home are unobstructed and large enough to
circulate air effectively.
Find fabulous floors
If you have considered replacing your flooring this year, hardwood floors are very stylish right now. Additionally, wood floors are also more asthma and allergy friendly than wall-to-wall carpet. Cover your new hardwood floors with small, washable area rugs for a more breathable environment everyone can enjoy. And for those rooms where carpeting still exists, remember to vacuum the space weekly and clean up any spills immediately.
Waterproof your home
Leaky pipes, water in the basement or even on the walls – moisture like this can be a source of mildew, as well as indicate a general waste of money and potential cause of greater damage. These issues should be addressed immediately before water damages your home or mold and mildew become a serious problem. Five healthy summer family activities
Summer has arrived and for many kids, sports and activity practices are on hiatus leaving them with plenty of time to lounge on the couch. But summer isn’t the time to get lazy. Warmer weather provides the perfect opportunity to get more involved in your kids’ lives and spend time together as a family. As a parent, your children will pick up on your habits, good or bad, so it’s important to be a role model for living a healthy way of life by teaching healthy habits starting at a young age. Show your family the value of an active lifestyle with these healthy family activity ideas from Life Time Fitness: Share a sport you love No child is too young to engage in your favorite sport or activity. Whether you’re a basketball player or a yogi, show the kids your enthusiasm for the activity you love. When they see you having fun, they’ll want
American Society of Landscape Architects. Decking manufacturers have responded to this trend by expanding their decking collections to include lighting lines optimized for easy installation with their board and railing options. The new variety of lighting options, including recessed bullet lights, under rail strip lights, stair lights and post lights can seem overwhelming and difficult to install. With the emergence of energy-efficient LEDs, installation of these lights has become easier, and performance has improved, making design possibilities limitless. Some systems are even sold as plug-and-play to help eliminate the need for an electrician, which allows do-it-yourselfers
to try it, too. Also, enroll your kids in classes that align with their interests. Life Time Kids Academy features two to three hours of classes for kids’ ages three months to 11 years in all areas, from fitness and agility, to mind, arts and culture-all in one convenient location, giving children the chance to experience a myriad of activities to find interests of their own. Try rock climbing You’ve seen the big rock wall in sports stores and health clubs, but have you taken the challenge of climbing with your kids? Trying out new activities and stepping outside your comfort zone is a big part of enjoying a healthy way of life. Even if you or your kids are nervous in the beginning, try a few training sessions or take some time with certified professionals at Life Time. Doing so will assure you of your safety and calm your nerves. Rock
climbing is not only a physical workout, but it also gets your brain moving as you navigate your way to the top. Get to the pool It wouldn’t be summer without some time in the water. Your local pool is a great place to head for some fun in the sun. Life Time Swim experts recommend that you find a pool with high quality water standards. Pool water should be clean and clear; if you walk into a pool area and smell chemicals, often times that means there are not enough chemicals in the pool rather than too many. You’ll also want to ensure that the pool has adequate safety standards, such as Life Time’s 25:10 rule (if a child cannot swim more than 25 meters, their parent or guardian must be within 10 feet) and a 3:1 non-swimmer to swimmer ratio. Don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen and reapply every few hours.
Send them to day camp For many working parents, it’s a yearly battle to figure out who will take care of their children during the summer days. One solution to this is a summer day camp, like Life Time Kids Summer Camps. This camp, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., is focused on helping kids develop a passion for living healthy and active lifestyles with a full spectrum of engaging activities and a new theme to look forward to each week. Go for a family walk Get into a routine of taking an afterdinner walk a few nights each week. If your little ones start to get bored or complain, use some tricks to keep them engaged. For example, keep their attention with a counting game, or make up an elaborate story together. Soon these walks will become a fun family treat.

• outdoor living from page 6 and deck builders to more easily install the lights on their own. These lights not only look great, they also help streamline the product selection and installation process by ensuring lights that perform well with the manufacturer’s decking and railing. Accent with specialty railing One of the quickest ways to enhance your outdoor living design is by adding a contemporary deck railing. New railing options are designed to enhance the overall look of your deck, reduce maintenance of your space and improve your views. To accomplish this, many decks are being built with mixed medium railings,
such as cable infills or tempered glass panels. As these railing selections become more specialized, it’s important to educate yourself about product warranties and installation recommendations to be sure you get the right product for your needs. Among the many choices, aluminum railing systems can provide a modern look at a more affordable price and are available in many color options. These systems may also be available in easy-to-install kits and are typically designed to adapt to the mixed medium infills. They provide a wide range of sophisticated styles to complement the sleek, modern designs of composite decking and are available with longer warranties than
other options like vinyl railing. Putting all the details together By offering a wider range of accessories, manufacturers are making it easier for builders and do-it-yourselfers to find products that work well together. “A family of products designed to work together helps simplify the building process and creates a beautiful, long-lasting deck,” says Brent Gwatney, senior vice president of sales and marketing for MoistureShield composite decking. “Our goal is to align the warranties and performance on all of our decking and accessories, to create a package of consistent options.”

Greener, cleaner bathrooms save water, time and money
Water conservation Low-flow bathroom fixtures abound, and today’s models are significantly improved over earlier versions that conserved water at the expense of effectiveness and user experience. Look for WaterSense labeled products to help ensure your toilet, showerhead and faucet choices are watersaving, high performing styles. Products like the VorMax high efficiency toilet from American Standard use less water, yet can provide a more effective flush than standard toilets. The VorMax cleans two times better than comparable commodes, delivering the cleanest flush ever engineered, while using 20 percent less water per flush than typical toilet models.
Replacing standard showerheads with water and energy-efficient options can also help reduce water usage without sacrificing the user’s experience. From basic models to luxury choices, manufacturers offer a range of water-saving showerheads that produce powerful, fulfilling spray patterns suitable for any bathroom remodeling project. Installing water-efficient fixtures can help your family use 30 percent less water, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Energy efficiency While bathrooms generally consume less electricity than other rooms in the house, it still pays to keep efficiency in mind when choosing bathroom lighting and ventilation fans. Look for light fixtures that are Energy Star-rated. Replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient LEDs or CFLs. Choose a ventilation fan that can remove humidity and odors from the room while still conserving energy. While you’re upgrading your bathroom’s productivity, don’t forget that all those hot showers contribute to the bathroom’s overall energy footprint, too. If your water heater is an older, inefficient model, upgrading to a newer Energy Star-rated model can significantly reduce energy bills. According to the EPA, water heaters are the second highest source of energy usage in the home. Greener cleaning Chemical cleansers have been linked to allergies, asthma and other respiratory ailments, which could explain why 75 percent of respondents to the J.R. Watkins Cleaning Survey by Kelton said they believe it’s important to use natural products when cleaning around the home. It’s possible to

choose bathroom materials that can help minimize the need for harsh chemical cleaners. Fixtures that perform more efficiently can help you spend less time cleaning and reduce the use of chemicals to stay sparkling and sanitary. If you’re considering a green home renovation, or building an eco-friendly house, you’ll likely put a lot of thought into heating and cooling, as well as kitchen appliances.
